Light drizzle was present yesterday morning with a little bit of sleet mixed in later on which ended about noon. A brief, light rain shower hit about 2:00 p.m. Shortly after that I measured accumulation and removed the funnel and tube. From 4:55 p.m. to before 5:50 p.m. I observed the season's first snowfall. It was very light consisting of some large aggregates which only spotted the pavement. |

It was quite foggy at time of observation. The trace could be fog that coalesced and accumulated in the gauge, but only the bottom of it had any water, so I assumed that it fell. If fog condensed, I would expect water on other parts of the gauge. |

A few flakes of snow began falling at 2:00 p.m. yesterday, and before 3:00 p.m. it had increased to light snow. Sometime before 4:30 p.m. the intensity increased again to moderate. Surface temperatures were warm enough that very little of it accumulated, and streets/sidewalks were just wet. That changed after dark when I noticed most of the accumulation. Sometime before 7:45 p.m. the snow intensity backed off to light, then very light, ending between 12:30 and 1:00 a.m. today. |

Light snow yesterday morning continued at varying intensities (very light to moderate) throughout the day. By 6:00 p.m., it lightened to flurries. By 9:00 p.m. even the occasional flakes had ended. Winds caused a little drifting, but nothing significant. I'm sure, however, that it affected the gauge accumulation, since today' core measurement (taken in the middle of my back yard) exceeded the total gauge measurements for this storm. The total snow depth is an average of 8 measurements made in my back yard. |

This morning's "offical" gauge measurement (1.39") is in error and is greatly understated. When I retrieved the reading, at least 8" of snow was stacked on top of the gauge, and in my attempt to tamp it down inside, most of it fell off outside. I measured and reported what was left; I estimate the total to be near 1.75", because the precip began as rain which was heavy at times. (The core measurement also will be an understatement of the total.) Total snow depth is an average of 7 measurements made in various places in my back yard. *****
Yesterday morning started out sunny, but by noon clouds began rolling in. The significant weather change was declared by a single crack of thunder at 2:25 p.m. About 10 minutes later light rain began to fall. By 2:50 p.m. snow had mixed in with it, and the temperature began falling rapidly. At 2:50 p.m. there was another crack of thunder. By 3:10 p.m. the mixed precip had changed back to light rain. At 3:30 p.m. a full-fledged thunderstorm began with moderate rain. Less than 10 minutes later snow mixed with the rain. By 4:10 p.m. the thunderstorm had ended, but moderate mixed rain and snow continued to fall. Another crack of thunder was heard at 4:12 p.m. By 4:30 p.m. the precip had changed to heavy snow. At 5:30 p.m. there
already was at least 4 inches of accumulation. Snow continued throughout the evening. By midnight the intensity had changed to very light, and the snowfall ended well before observation time. |

Just about 7 a.m. I heard noise coming from our roof. When I looked out my window, I saw what appeared to be snow pellets bouncing and accumulating on my garage roof. I held my hand out the window and captured some of them; they were quite uniformly 2-3 mm in diameter, with a coating of rime and a hard center. It was definitely not snow. I would classify it as rimed sleet, but the core of most of the frozen drops was milky, not clear; so it could have been very small hail. It started out moderate in intensity coming straight down and stayed that way for at least 10 minutes. It was still coming down lightly at 7:15 a.m. and ended before 7:30 a.m. It accumulated about 3/8" deep. (Observing the radar loop, an earlier precip echo passed over between 4:50 a.m. 5:15 a.m., so the accumulation amounts may not be only for this event.) |

Steady very-light rain began falling at 10:00 a.m. and continued until about 10:30 a.m. It renewed about 2:15 p.m. and changed to a thunderstorm with light rain at 2:45 p.m. ending some time after 3:30 p.m. Light rain began anew at 5:40 p.m. and evolved to a thunderstorm at 6:15 p.m.; rain ended before 7:30 p.m. Apparently there was some added rainfall overnight. |
