Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/1/2009 7:00 AM 0.03 T M 0.0 M Tmax: 67; Tmin: 20 (coldest of the season so far; and a daily record). A few rainshowers with FroPa yesterday, then spill-over flurries off and on, only amounting to a trace. Breezy morning, a cold start to October.
10/2/2009 7:00 AM T T M 0.0 M Tmax: 35F (new daily record (low max)); Tmin: 21 (24 since midnight). Annoyingly breezy/windy night. Odd fall color season - it seems that every time a batch of leaves turn color, we get enough wind (last weekend was the first one) to blow them off prematurely...
10/3/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 47; Tmin: 20 (another daily record - hitting 22 by midnight was enough to tie it for yesterday). Nice fall day, less windy than previous two days. Calm overnight.
10/4/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 50; Tmin: 25.
10/5/2009 7:00 AM 0.09 T M 0.0 M Tmax: 43(e); Tmin: 28. Mixed rain/snow yesterday afternoon, and a rare morning rain of 0.02" this morning.
10/6/2009 7:00 AM 0.02 0.1 M T M Tmax: 44; Tmin: 21. Morning graupel shower right after observing time, and some snow in evening with FroPa; a cold breeze all night, with clear moonlit skies (full moon over weekend). I will be in Austin for the next few days, will backfill observations on Friday, hopefully with some snow on Thursday...
10/7/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 43; Tmin: 22 (29 since midnight).
10/8/2009 7:00 AM T T M 0.0 M Tmax: 60; Tmin: 22. Sleet apparently commenced just before 7am MDT.
10/9/2009 7:00 AM 0.16 2.2 M 1.0 M Tmax: 26e (the midnight-to-midnight high of 34F was a new daily record low max); Tmin: 16 (before midnight; 21 after midnight). Snow fell during day. Measurement late at night included about 0.1" of frozen slush on bottom of snowboard. Did this measurement myself upon return from hot and steamy Austin...
10/10/2009 7:00 AM 0.27 5.7 M 3.5 M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 1F (easily the coldest ever (since 1990) for so early in the season; this daily record was 18F below the previous one; the first calendar date with a lower Tmin record is the 29th of October (1991)). Snow overnight, never quite reaching 1"/h, quite fluffy through the event. Still flurrying this morning, but winding down (only 1.7" after midnight).
10/11/2009 7:00 AM T 0.2 M 2.0 M Tmax: 19 (broke daily record by 15F; the earliest calendar date with a lower Tmax record was the 29th of October in 1993); Tmin: 02 (06 since midnight; the latter being yet another daily record). About as wintery as it can get this early in the season (yesterday's mean temperature of 10F was more than 30F below the long-term average). Light flurries in AM yesterday, riming overnight. Neighborhood big-horned owl hooted its head off last evening, easily for more than one hour (even before the moon came up).
10/12/2009 7:00 AM T T M 0.5 M Tmax: 41; Tmin: 08 (32 since midnight). Cold air flushed out briefly around 10am MDT (hit 30F), then a couple of hours back in the arctic soup (hovering at or below 20F), then the real flush-out between noon and 1pm MDT, with snow blowing of trees (from the west), and 37F within 45'. Breezy rest of the day, but apparently not enough to dislodge snow off trees about 1000' below us as witnessed this morning. Fairly calm and mostly clear this morning.
10/13/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 56; Tmin: 24. Mostly cloudy this morning. Fog below 7.5K.
10/14/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 50; Tmin: 30 (32 since midnight). Breezy and partly cloudy this morning (clouds from CA monster storm are coming in - just read that several places in Monterey County had more than a foot of rain, including one 21" report - in one day!). Doubt that this will be good for more than virga for us, however. Trace of snow on ground down to well under 10% coverage.
10/15/2009 7:00 AM 0.03 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 48; Tmin: 34. Apparently some stray rainshowers did spill down to our elevation.

10/17/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 53; Tmin: 22. Got back from hot and sunny Las Vegas (no precip just clouds earlier this week) to a pretty hard freeze this morning.
10/18/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 53; Tmin: 43 (by far the warmest low this month, and a daily record for this date). Breezy overnight.
10/19/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 63; Tmin: 40. Tmax ties for 2nd place, but not even close to the daily record (71F).
10/20/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 63; Tmin: 33. Expect to report some snow by tomorrow morning to end this Indian Summer spell. NAM is coming around to Canadian solution that should yield at least 0.5" H2O - hope that this is still a low-ball estimate.
10/21/2009 7:00 AM 0.19 1.6 M 1.5 M Tmax: 49; Tmin: 23. Light rain (0.01"+) is replaced by mixed freezing drizzle and light snow by about 6pm, and just light snow by about 10pm (there were stretches when the snowfall rate slowed to just a few flurries). Steady light snow this morning.
10/22/2009 7:00 AM 0.07 0.8 M 1.5 M Tmax: 31; Tmin: 16 (this would have been a typical low for the month of October if we had not had our earlier cold snap with +1F...). Snow ended around noon, foggy (and riming) most of the PM hours, then clear and calm overnight.

10/28/2009 7:00 AM 0.99 13.9 M 11.0 M Tmax: 46; Tmin: 15. Snow began around 4-5pm MDT. Close to 1"/h for much of evening, but then a bit of lull overnight. Measurements were taken by my wife in my absence (this is the biggest snowstorm I have ever missed). As best as I can tell, precipitation was all in the form of snow.
10/29/2009 7:00 AM 0.74 20.9 M 24.0 M Tmax: 21; Tmin: 07. Fluffy snow. Peak accumulation rates (>1"/h) from about 7am until 4pm (4.8" between 10am and noon). Fizzle snow overnight (1.8" in 9h). Still snowing lightly this morning.
10/30/2009 7:00 AM 0.17 1.9 M 18.0 M Tmax: 20; Tmin: 09. Fizzle snow lingers into late evening, much denser than yesterday. Snow is settling. Windy overnight. Storm total: 36.7/1.90" - my 2nd biggest on record for October (1997 was 56"/2.7", similarly fluffy!).
10/31/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 15.0 M Tmax: 30 (29 before midnight); Tmin: 16 (27 since midnight). Snow has settled enough that it will be interesting to see how much more we are going to melt in the next couple of days.

11/8/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 1.5 M Tmax: 55; Tmin: 31. Still no record high this month, the melting snow cover (now 50%) has probably prevented some of these from being broken. A sunny mild day yesterday. Looks like a little bit of snow tonight, then another hiatus until about Friday.
11/9/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 46; Tmin: 23. A few clouds last night was all she wrote, a disappointing 'storm'. Down to a trace, now we have to wait until Friday or so before we finally get some moisture again.

11/12/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 54; Tmin: 31 (36 since midnight). Cloudy and slightly breezy night kept temperatures up overnight. Snow cover still around 30% (close to 100% on north-facing ditches/tree-stands). The next three days should bring us some snow, potentially a foot or so.
11/13/2009 7:00 AM T 0.0 M T M Tmax: 51; Tmin: 27. Freezing drizzle and fog this morning. Don't expect too much snow until tomorrow, but enough to get back to real snowcover, say, 3-5" by tomorrow morning.
11/14/2009 7:00 AM 0.19 2.4 M 2.5 M Tmax: 28e (38 was the calendar-day high, reached right after midnight yesterday); Tmin: 12. Morning freezing drizzle coated snowboard with thin layer during the morning, moderate snow fell in afternoon, calm and clear overnight, with light riming by this morning, back in the fog, but still essentially calm.
11/15/2009 7:00 AM 0.56 6.6 M 7.0 M Tmax: 28 (PM High: 24); Tmin: 13. Snow flurries started around noon after a foggy late morning. Became steady and heavier around 2pm, but subsided by 4pm, only to pick up again around sunset when it briefly approached about 1"/h. Never really stopped snowing, but was surprisingly dense until early morning, but now it is finally fluffy (20:1). Would be pleasantly surprised if we get more than 2" this morning and/or kept snowing past about noon. Oh well, now for the long interim before the next storm...
11/16/2009 7:00 AM 0.09 1.7 M 7.0 M Tmax: 22; Tmin: 4. Steady light snow from about noon until just after 6pm. Local ponds/lakes all frozen over. Clear and calm this morning, after almost calm night.
11/17/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 6.0 M Tmax: 32; Tmin: 06 (21 since midnight). Sunny day/clear night/very light breeze from west to warm us up, especially after midnight.
11/18/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.0 M Tmax: 42; Tmin: 24 (26 since midnight). Enough of a breeze/drainage flow to keep minima up despite clear skies. Snow is getting pretty crunchy where exposed to the sun, but there is still snow on trees and powder underneath.
11/19/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 4.5 M Tmax: 45; Tmin: 20. Breezy evening kept us 'warm' (30F+) past midnight, but then it finally calmed down to drop more than 10F by sunrise. Chances for snow this weekend look slimmer now than earlier this week.
11/20/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 4.5 M Tmax: 35; Tmin: 19 (20 since midnight). A cool day thrown into the mix, with no chance in snowpack conditions.

11/22/2009 7:00 AM T T M 4.0 M Tmax: 43; Tmin: 17. A few evening flurries accumulate on snowboard by about 9pm. Increasing moisture during the day raised wetbulb temperature above freezing, leading to some melting.
11/23/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 3.5 M Tmax: 35; Tmin; 13. Breezy with Foehnwall to the west, but not even flurries for us. Cold morning.
11/24/2009 7:00 AM T T M 3.5 M Tmax: 20e (calendar daily Tmax was 24F just after midnight); Tmin: 10. A cold and breezy day with just a few flurries, disappointing... Now for another dry week to nibble away at the remaining snow.
11/25/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 3.5 M Tmax: 33; Tmin: 16. Breezy and mostly clear. Next snow: Saturday into Sunday, hopefully a bit more than a flurry.
11/26/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 3.5 M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 23 (28 since midnight). Still breezy, especially overnight. Next snow over the weekend still looks on track, should be enough to bring coverage back up from about 80% right now. Just saw a report that our biggest neighborhood lake (1/8 mile across) is 4" frozen, enough to carry people safely. This is one of the later reliable freeze-overs I can remember (lakes actually froze over in early October with that first cold snap, but then melted out again; ditto in early November). Happy Thanksgiving!

11/29/2009 7:00 AM 0.01 0.2 M 3.0 M Tmax: 39; Tmin: 17. Weak upslope commenced before noon (peak temperature was reached mid-morning). Very light snow began after 6pm, "heaviest" right after midnight. Clear and calm this morning.
11/30/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 3.0 M Tmax: 28; Tmin: 15. Nearly calm night. Went for a half-hour midnight moonshine walk right around the time it was coldest (and calm), with a Great Horned Owl hooting for most of that time. Another month over, with 0.85/10.9" one of the drier Novembers on record, but at least wetter than the last two Novembers...
12/1/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 3.0 M Tmax: 41; Tmin: 26. Waiting for the snow/cool-down! December will definitely be a different beast than November (which was warmer than October!).
12/2/2009 7:00 AM 0.19 4.6 M 6.5 M Tmax: 34; Tmin: 0 (1st of season). Flurries commenced in evening, becoming moderate after 10pm. Very fluffy initially (2.8/0.08" by 1:25am), then becoming smaller as it got colder (2nd measurement: 1.8/0.11"). I guess we are good for another 1-2" today, maybe more tomorrow.
12/3/2009 7:00 AM 0.11 1.5 M 6.5 M Tmax: 7(e) - early morning high: 10F; Tmin: -15 (7F lower than previous daily record). Evening snow lasted past midnight (at <0F), but clear, calm, and cold this morning.
12/4/2009 7:00 AM 0.01 0.1 M 6.0 M Tmax: 4 (broke old daily record by more than 15F); Tmin: -14 from yesterday morning, -11F before midnight, and -5F since midnight which is still a record low for today. Breezy morning, with blowing snow creating mini-snowdrifts (<4") across our roads), still brutally cold with 0F at 7am. Looks like our warm-up will be short-lived, with an instant replay of our last storm for Sunday, and a more interesting potential storm situation shaping up for Tuesday...
12/5/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 6.0 M Tmax: 20 (18 yesterday); Tmin: 0 (12 since midnight). Off and on windy (G40 or higher) with minor drifting, but surprisingly low winds overnight. In fact, the drive from Boulder to home was interesting last night: dead calm and cold in Boulder, windy in the canyon, and back to calm up here (around 10pm). We should be good for a few inches tonight, continuing into tomorrow.
12/6/2009 7:00 AM 0.13 2.1 M 7.0 M Tmax: 29 (reached well before noon, followed by upslope flow that took forever to cloud over, but dropped temperatures into the teens by 1pm); Tmin: -3. Light snow overnight, but did not really get going until it was in the low single numbers Fahrenheit, hence it was not as fluffy last time. Still snowing lightly this morning.
12/7/2009 7:00 AM 0.11 1.3 M 8.0 M Tmax: 5(broke daily record by 9F); Tmin: -10. Back in the deep freeze. 'Underachiever' storm dropped a total of 3.4/0.24" since Saturday evening (quite a bit less than in the plains and lower foothills).
12/8/2009 5:15 AM 0.04 0.4 M 8.0 M Tmax: 10; Tmin: -11. Cold air still limits snowfall totals well below what the weather service expected. Had to measure early (5:15am) since I had to go the airport for a one-day meeting in Las Vegas. Snowing lightly this morning.
12/9/2009 7:00 AM 0.11 1.4 M 9.0 M Tmax: -3 (1st subzero high of season, and a new daily record by 21F!); Tmin: -14 (early evening, another daily record, by 7F). Snow ends sometime during day. Late evening and overnight has occasional breezy westerly winds, enough to cause light blowing snow. Still down to -10F this morning under a sunny sky.
12/10/2009 7:00 AM 0.03 0.4 M 9.0 M Tmax: a lonely 1F (new record by 17F); Tmin: -9 from yesterday morning, and -4F since midnight, which ties the record for today). Breezy last 24h, with occasional ground blizzard conditions. There was some spill-over snow last evening, which I measured while ignoring the drifting snow from earlier and later wind events. I guess we are lucky not to have more powdersnow around from recent storms, limiting the snow drifts across roads to about 1 ft. depth... Warm-up is underway...
12/11/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 8.5 M Tmax: 15 (12 before midnight); Tmin: 0 (9 since midnight). Another windy day, messing up driveways... I just crunched thru the numbers from December 1-10, and my average temperature was +3F, or about 20F below my 1990-2009 averages! I can think of only one cold snap that was colder since 1990, and that was back in late December 1990. Of course, there were a couple of cold snaps in the 80s that would have been colder, especially in February '89 and December '83.
12/12/2009 7:00 AM T T M 8.0 M Tmax: 27; Tmin: 12 (17 since midnight). Not as windy, a few flurries last night. Expect more of the same today.

12/16/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 9.0 M Tmax: 34; Tmin: 16 (23 since midnight). Breezy, with rising temperatures in early part of night all the way up to 32F, but then a calmer period to allow for that post-midnight low. Big wave-cloud covering 90% of the sky this morning - if it persists, it will keep us much colder than predicted...

12/22/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 8.5 M Tmax: 34; Tmin: 20 (it calmed down last night). The wait is almost over!
12/23/2009 7:00 AM 0.18 3.8 M 12.0 M Tmax: 33; Tmin: 15. Snow began in late afternoon, very fluffy (20+:1). Intermediate measurement at 1am yielded 2.8", so it really slowed down after midnight. Temperature has a long way to go down, so I expect off and on snowfall through tomorrow or even Friday morning.
12/24/2009 7:00 AM 0.25 4.2 M 14.5 M Storm total: 8.0/0.43". Little snow after midnight (0.1"+). Tmax: 24; Tmin: -6. Currently -5F under a clear calm sky. Looks like we are done for now...

12/31/2009 7:00 AM T T M 12.0 M Tmax: 23; Tmin: 2. More spill-over flurries, especially around 6pm, adding up to a 'healthy trace'. My coldest month on record is drawing to a close, averaging just over 13F. This is also the fourth December in a row that was colder and snowier than average.

1/2/2010 7:00 AM T T M 11.5 M Tmax: 30; Tmin: 20. Snowflurries at times. Left for Redstone in morning, more on drive in tomorrow's entry.
1/3/2010 7:00 AM 0.01 0.2 M 11.5 M Tmax: 33 (first above freezing in 11 days); Tmin: 15e. Went to Redstone yesterday morning, encountered good spill-over snow near Ward and towards Eisenhower Tunnel. Based on neighbor's records, I believe there was one spill-over shower that made it into our neighborhood.
1/4/2010 7:00 AM 0.09 1.3 M 13.0 M Tmax: 24e; Tmin: 5 (apparently before midnight, about 9F since then). Good afternoon snows yesterday resulted in apparent mess on road down to Jamestown. Measured 0.10/1.2" on snowboard late today upon our return from Redstone, I prorated the snow based on one day settling on snowboard (assuming that there was no sublimation in gage, but that the initial 0.2" two days ago and about 1.3" yesterday reduced to 1.2". One more note: we drove up to McClure's pass in morning (8am), and it was -4F (car thermometer) at the base of the pass (near the turnoff to Marble), but +10F at pass level, a typical midwinter inversion.
1/5/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 12.5 M Tmax: 28; Tmin: 18 since midnight. As I wrote yesterday, we got back from Redstone last night, and had to estimate a few of my values for the last few days. We were very close to spill-over snow this morning, in fact, we drove into it on the way out by 8am.
1/6/2010 7:00 AM T T M 12.0 M Tmax: 29; Tmin: 22. Occasional spill-over flurries and breezy. Waiting for the next cold front later today.
1/7/2010 7:00 AM 0.21 3.8 M 15.0 M Tmax: 27; Tmin: -9 (right around midnight). FroPa around 10am, snow mostly in the PM. Peak overall depth: 15.5" in evening. Just enough flow after midnight to warm us up again (0F at 7am and clear sky).
1/8/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 14.5 M Tmax: 6F (!); Tmin: -7. Cold air leaving - my 7am temperature equaled the Tmax of yesterday! Looks like we are done with the arctic cold for a while...

1/11/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 13.5 M Tmax: 37; Tmin: 15. Calm this morning and most of yesterday. Another 'mild' day.

1/23/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 11.5 M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 12. Another breezy night, and, yes, another storm that missed us (to the south).
1/24/2010 10:00 AM 0.01 0.2 M 11.5 M Tmax: 25; Tmin: 09. First measurable snow in 17 days - one of my longer winter-time dry spells on record (longest was back in '92: 22d.) - got up too late this morning, but all of this fell in last 6h or so.
1/25/2010 7:00 AM 0.02 0.3 M 12.0 M Tmax: 18; Tmin: 7F. Off and on flurries all day, heaviest in late afternoon before sunset. Drove to Allenspark for recycling around 3pm, and encountered 1"+ snowdepth on Peak-Peak near Peaceful Valley, where it was clearly snowing the hardest (typical for spill-over situations). Breezy and cold, top wind gusts probably around 40mph.
1/26/2010 7:00 AM T T M 12.0 M Tmax: 20; Tmin: 9 (13 since midnight). A few flurries yesterday morning, otherwise another pretty raw day, letting up this morning.
1/27/2010 7:00 AM T T M 12.0 M Tmax: 37; Tmin: 17. A few flurries around midnight, fairly calm and clear this morning. Should be able to report a few inches by tomorrow...
1/28/2010 7:00 AM 0.18 1.6 M 13.5 M Tmax: 30; Tmin: 13. Surprisingly dense snow event that lasted from about 5pm until past midnight. Riming fog this morning (<1/8mile).
1/29/2010 7:00 AM T T M 13.5 M Tmax; 25; Tmin: 9F. Apparently foggy most of the day, but clear by and calm by this morning. With all the riming and a few flurries thru the evening, another wintery day in the books.

2/1/2010 7:00 AM T T M 13.0 M Tmax: 30e; Tmin: 11. A few spill-over flurries was all she wrote. Steamboat skiing was icier and with less snow on the ground (36") for this time of year than I can remember.
2/2/2010 7:00 AM T T M 13.0 M Tmax: 25; Tmin: 8. Spill-over flurries yesterday morning, breezy evening, but then calming down to allow for cool-down this morning.

2/5/2010 7:00 AM T T M 13.0 M Tmax: 30; Tmin: 14. A few spill-over flurries off and on into the night, breezy. Looks like winter will stage a real come-back starting Sunday.
2/6/2010 7:00 AM T T M 13.0 M Tmax: 32; Tmin: 18. A few flurries yet again, while DC gets buried in snow. I am starting to doubt we will get more than a couple of inches over the next two days.
2/7/2010 7:45 AM 0.04 0.6 M 13.5 M Tmax: 33; Tmin: 17; steady light snow (to be immediately followed by heavier showers to be documented tomorrow) at 17F this morning.
2/8/2010 7:00 AM 0.24 4.7 M 16.5 M Tmax: 19e (it was 22F earlier in the morning yesterday, and hovered around 18F for much of the day); Tmin: 8F. Decent snow shower in the morning (~1.5"/h around 8am) was followed by steady, but slowly diminishing snow all day and into the night, but only 0.4" from midnight until 7am this morning. However, it is picking up this morning for Round 2, as the colder air is finally sloshing in.
2/9/2010 7:00 AM 0.03 2.3 M 17.5 M Tmax: 11; Tmin: -10 (dropped from 0F at midnight); lingering FLUFFY snow through the day into evening (almost 80:1 ratio!!!), then clear and calm this morning. Coldest Tmin since early December. Storm total: 7.6/0.31".

2/13/2010 7:00 AM 0.01 0.2 M 15.5 M Tmax: 27; Tmin: 15 (17 since midnight). Slightly more substantial spill-over last night, a cold surge is heading our way, will be interesting to see how much snow gets squeezed out.
2/14/2010 7:00 AM 0.06 1.5 M 16.0 M Tmax: 29 (warmest in 7 days); Tmin: 03. Fluffy snow this morning, with gentle upslope.
2/15/2010 7:00 AM 0.01 0.6 M 16.5 M Tmax: 17; Tmin: -3 (around 8pm; 02F since midnight). Very fluffy snow continued most of day, clearing by sunset and calm to drop us below 0F. A little breezy overnight to keep temperatures 'up'.
2/16/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 16.0 M Tmax: 23; Tmin: -2 (a mostly calm and clear night).

2/18/2010 7:00 AM T T M 15.5 M Tmax: 34 (1st above freezing in 11 days); Tmin: 10. A few spill-over flurries, expecting more today.
2/19/2010 7:00 AM 0.16 2.4 M 17.5 M Tmax: 33; Tmin: -3 (dropping from +9F at midnight). Riming fog this morning after a mostly clear late night. Snow fell in PM, only a trace after midnight.
2/20/2010 7:00 AM 0.12 1.8 M 18.0 M Tmax: 22; Tmin: 0 (6F since midnight); light snow fell from late morning until past midnight after that clear early morning. Not much going on right now, with breaks in the clouds, but not as clear as yesterday. Expect to see at least 3-5" by tomorrow morning.
2/21/2010 7:00 AM 0.25 4.4 M 20.0 M Tmax: 21; Tmin: -2; more or less continuous, if light snow, bulk of it in PM, but never heavier than 0.5"/h. Very light and fluffy snow this morning.
2/22/2010 7:00 AM 0.15 2.3 M 21.0 M Tmax: 12; Tmin: -3. Mostly clear this morning, still some polar snowflurries, yesterday was still mostly cloudy all day, with more or less steady snow. Four day storm totals: 0.68/10.9".
2/23/2010 7:00 AM 0.04 0.5 M 20.5 M Tmax: 21; Tmin: -2 yesterday morning / 0F last evening / +1F since midnight; what looked like instability snow showers yesterday afternoon gave us another 0.5" of snow, while additional snow that is blowing off the trees this morning is discounted (yes, a little wind is back).
2/24/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 19.5 M Tmax: 27; Tmin: 8F (14F since midnight); breezy, with some drifting snow in last 24h, leading to some compaction of snowpack. Fairly sunny this morning.
2/25/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 19.0 M Tmax: 35; Tmin; 18; wavecloud all day to keep Boulder a bit chillier than expected; a comparatively mild night.
2/26/2010 7:00 AM 0.28 5.1 M 22.5 M Tmax: 31; Tmin; 6. Afternoon snow ends by 10pm, surprisingly heavy snow around here, with sharp gradient downhill (Jamestown had less than 2" at just under 7K). Clear and almost calm by midnight.
2/27/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 21.0 M Tmax: 30; Tmin: 10 (16 since midnight). Snow is settling.
2/28/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 20.5 M Tmax: 41 (warmest since mid-January!); Tmin: 19. There may have been some flurries before 7am, but certainly no accumulation. Quite cloudy ahead of 'storm'.
3/1/2010 7:00 AM 0.12 2.2 M 21.0 M Tmax: 32 (21st day at or below freezing this month); Tmin; 15. Fluffy snow fell fairly hard from 8-9am (~1"), followed by fizzle snow most of day that never got back to the fluffy intensity; full moon out and no more snow by midnight. Month ended up with 1.55/29" (4th highest in 20 years). Seasonal total: 123.2" (5th highest).
3/2/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 20.0 M Tmax: 34; Tmin: 13 (15 since midnight). In like a lamb!!!
3/3/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 19.0 M Tmax: 41; Tmin: 16. Another mild day.
3/4/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 18.0 M Tmax: 44; Tmin: 19. Boring wx to last one more day?!
3/5/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 17.5 M Tmax: 39; Tmin: 18. Spill-over snow just to our west this morning, but nothing at our house, except mostly cloudy skies. Am skeptical about getting anything today, hope for more by early next week.
3/6/2010 7:00 AM 0.01 0.2 M 17.5 M Tmax: 30; Tmin: 20 (since midnight); PM spill-over snow did not amount to much, breezy night, snow was done by midnight.
3/7/2010 7:00 AM T T M 17.0 M Tmax: 40; Tmin: 16. A few snowflurries in PM, clear and calm towards morning to allow for a fairly substantial overnight temperature drop.
3/8/2010 7:00 AM 0.01 0.1 M 16.0 M Tmax: 45 (warmest since January 16); Tmin: 19 (25 since midnight). Evening snow shower did not last very long. Some real melting during the day-time: dirt roads are in 'mud-season' mode! This week will be interesting, could end up with a foot of new snow by Friday, or much less!
3/9/2010 7:00 AM 0.03 0.3 M 16.0 M Tmax: 35; Tmin: 20. Snow showers off and on all day, but not amounting to much (given the 10:1 ratio, I may have missed some snow that might have melted earlier in the day). All in all, a dud!
3/10/2010 7:00 AM 0.13 2.5 M 18.0 M Tmax: 40; Tmin: 14. Most of the snow fell between 8-10pm (1.7"), with the rest coming from afternoon snow showers that seemed to have stuck to the ground above 8K only.
3/11/2010 7:00 AM 0.27 4.3 M 20.0 M Tmax: 35 (surprisingly high, must have been in the morning); snow showers most of afternoon, pretty much done by time I got home (7pm). Clearing just before midnight for the lowest temperature of the month so far: 10F
3/12/2010 7:00 AM T T M 19.0 M Tmax: 30; Tmin: 14. A northwesterly breeze and mostly clear skies, except for a brief period late morning yesterday that reversed the flow and apparently 'recycled' some moisture.
3/13/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 19.0 M Tmax: 39; Tmin: 17. Snowpack is settled. Waiting for the next snow tomorrow.
3/14/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 18.0 M Tmax: 42; Tmin: 17. Still no precipitation, interesting storm coming in too far south to be a big one, but with potential for 12h+ of decent upslope.
3/15/2010 7:00 AM 0.26 2.2 M 20.0 M Tmax: 29 (actually, the day-time Tmax might have been a few F lower); Tmin: 09F. Snow commenced around 11am MDT, ending just after midnight (still flurrying with stars visible). Extremely dense (8.5:1), with at least an hour of small snowpellets first, then a few short bursts of heavier snow, but never exceeding 0.5"/h. Oh well, this one got away (radar seemed to indicate earlier and heavier snow as close as Nederland). Clear this morning at our house, but a cloud deck below about 7.5-8K to keep the lower elevations much warmer overnight.
3/16/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 19.0 M Tmax: 39; Tmin: 17. Spring days are here...
3/17/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 18.0 M Tmax: 47; Tmin; 25. Expect to see the peak warming today, possibly breaking 50F, with our next storm scheduled for Friday (that one has more potential than the last one).
3/18/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 16.5 M Tmax: 52 (warmest since November 12th!); Tmin: 25. Waiting for the storm - looks like we should be good for a foot in the higher foothills by Friday evening (19th). Yesterday's melting opened up some gaps in the snowpack which now covers 85-90% of the ground in my backyard, but much less closer to our roads. 'Mudseason' is in full swing (for now).
3/19/2010 7:30 AM 0.40 5.0 M 20.0 M Tmax: 50; Tmin: 12. Slow start to this one, flurries commenced around 10pm MDT last night, but we only had 0.04/0.4" by 1am MDT. Woke up to moderate-to-heavy snow this morning (1-2"/h), hitting the low for the morning so far right at observation time, along with northerly winds gusting to about 20mph - quite wintery one day before astronomical spring begins! This should be good for a foot or more by day's end, we'll see.
3/20/2010 7:00 AM 0.66 15.4 M 28.0 M Tmax: 18 (21 for the calendar day earlier yesterday morning); Tmin: -6. We never got the really heavy snowfall rates that were reported further south, but 1-2"/h from about 6am-3pm, and (2nd wind) from 6-10pm MDT. While we started with 10:1 ratios early yesterday, we finished off extremely fluffy in the evening (last 1.8" after 8pm contained 0.03" of water, snow ending by about midnight). Fairly gusty north to (later) east winds during the storm, but dead calm and mostly clear this morning. Snow depth last evening: 30" - settling fast with such fluffy snow... 2d storm totals: 20.4/1.06" (4th(9th) biggest March snow-(H2O-)storm since 1991).
3/21/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 24.5 M Tmax: 30; Tmin: 0 (yesterday morning; 16F since 1am MDT). Breezy night to keep us warm. Snow settled rapidly (almost 6" since Friday evening), consistent with its initial fluffiness. Two more days of melting before the next storm blows in.
3/22/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 21.0 M Tmax: 46; Tmin: 23. A bit breezy, otherwise sunny all day - a 'fine spring day'.
3/23/2010 7:00 AM 0.04 0.8 M 19.5 M Tmax: 46; Tmin: 22. Surprise snow overnight (around 2am) well ahead of main storm today, which should drop a foot or more on us just 4-5 days after the 20" that fell on Friday. Mostly cloudy this morning, moderate snow reported in Laramie, but this will take a while to sag down to us.
3/24/2010 7:00 AM 1.56 20.7 M 35.5 M Tmax: 35; Tmin; 13. Good 2nd storm within five days! We reached over 2"/h from about 4:30-7:30pm, and at least 1"/h from about 4pm until past midnight MDT. According to a neighbor, we had 'blizzard conditions' right after noon, followed by a lull in the early afternoon, while heaviest snow in the early evening had some gusty winds out of the northerly sector. That wind may have prevented our power from going out (it sure flickered a few times), since it reduced the load on the power lines. It is still snowing lightly this morning at 7am, but should be over soon. Total so far for storm: 21.5/1.60", should end up just above 22". Combined with the storm five days ago, we have received 41.9/2.66", surpassing the snowfall totals of a similar double-hit in early March 1992 (by about 1"), but lagging behind by more than 1" for H2O. Because this second storm had more water than the first, the snow depth increase ended up being more impressive as well, from 19" before onset to 36" earlier this morning, before it started settling.
3/25/2010 7:00 AM 0.02 0.3 M 32.5 M Tmax: 33 (surprisingly high); Tmin: 10. Mostly clear and calm this morning after a mostly cloudy day. Snow was measured at 10am yesterday, with a few flurries after that ended before noon. Looks like yet another storm will deal a glancing blow tomorrow night!
3/26/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 29.0 M Tmax: 42; Tmin: 22. This was the three-day high temperature, while the low was estimated from neighboring station. Snowdepth is estimated. Interesting tidbit: on our drive along 285, the temperature dropped from the low 40s near Bailey to the low 20s near Fairplay and 10F by the time we reached the southern end of South Park (just before noon MDT). It was also pretty unique to have full snowcover all the way to Salida, can't remember the last time I have seen that. I guess the snowstorm earlier this week refreshed the snowcover of the whole region.
3/27/2010 7:00 AM 0.39 6.4 M 33.0 M Tmax: 36e; Tmin: 10 (two-day minimum). Multiple snow showers yesterday and overnight, with the heaviest in late afternoon. The snowfall total is based on neighbor's measurements, while the liquid total is based on gage I left outside without inside funnel. My guess is that the liquid total is a bit low since I did not get back until 4pm today. Snowdepth this morning is estimate.
3/28/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 30.0 M Tmax: 36; Tmin: 18 (since midnight). We did not get home until the afternoon, but I don't think we had snowfall after 7am yesterday. Occasionally breezy overnight, but mostly clear.
3/29/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 27.0 M Tmax: 42; Tmin: 26 (since midnight). Another 'fine spring day', snow is still mostly settling rather than melting. That will change today...
3/30/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 25.0 M Tmax: 50; Tmin: 31 (spring must be around the corner...); icicles are starting to fall off the house, ground still appears frozen, snow cover is still close to 100% away from roads (ditto with neighborhood lakes' icecover).
3/31/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 23.0 M Tmax: 58 (misses my daily record by 2F); Tmin: 30 (ties daily record; still 42F at midnight, but it calmed down and cleared up overnight). Serious mud season underway, and first real breaks in snow cover (sunny exposed spots). Losing 2"/day - if we don't get any more snow, we will melt out in next two weeks. Here is hoping for at least one more good dump!
4/1/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 21.0 M Tmax: 44; Tmin: 23. Fairly clear and calm overnight. Expect to see at least some spill-over snow today, but it certainly does not appear imminent.
4/2/2010 7:00 AM 0.04 0.5 M 21.0 M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 9. A few snow-/snowpellet showers in afternoon/early evening, then mostly bora conditions overnight. Remaining snowpack frozen in place...
4/3/2010 9:00 AM T T M 21.0 M Tmax: 28; Tmin: 10 (16 since midnight MST); a cold day, a slowly warming night, and windy this morning. I added the flurries this morning since I really got up later than indicated, and there were some flurries.
4/4/2010 7:00 AM 0.06 0.9 M 21.0 M Tmax: 36e; Tmin: 19. We went to Denver yesterday, and returned in the afternoon on Sunday. There was a total of 0.12" in the gage that broke up into two halves since there was obvious snow that fell both Saturday and later this morning. Both snowfall and snowdepth are estimates.
4/5/2010 7:00 AM 0.06 1.2 M 20.5 M Tmax: 42; Tmin: 20. There was a fairly intense snowshower in the morning (say, around 8-9am) that dropped most of this on us, melting slowly in the shade by the time I got home last evening.
4/6/2010 7:00 AM 0.11 1.6 M 19.5 M Tmax: 49; Tmin: 19. A heavy wet snow shower just before midnight MST (0.06/0.7"), followed by fluffy snow this morning, still flurrying this morning, with some pretty gusty winds from the west. This morning, roads were quite icy in parts of the canyon, especially above 8K.
4/7/2010 7:20 AM 0.24 4.5 M 23.0 M Tmax: 30; Tmin: 14 (15 since midnight). Interesting 24h - we had a little bit of spill-over, but mostly wind yesterday, including near ground-blizzard conditions around 8pm MDT when we got home (snow from the morning drifting across the road). Then a clear period, with westerly winds thru midnight, while the radar was showing the backwash of this storm slowly working its way back into northeastern Colorado. Snow finally began well after midnight, must have reached 1"/h or more before sunrise. Still snowing pretty good, with big fluffy flakes reducing visibility to about 1/4 mile. Should be over pretty soon.
4/8/2010 7:00 AM 0.04 1.0 M 21.0 M Tmax: 33; Tmin: 18. Morning snow was very fluffy yesterday. Breezy night to keep temperatures up. A few days of spring (sunny/dry) are coming down the pike...
4/9/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 19.0 M Tmax: 45; Tmin: 26 (since midnight). Clear and calm this morning. Melting has resumed. Welcome back to the mud season...
4/10/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 16.5 M Tmax: 48; Tmin: 23; backyard is slowly transforming into the 'beached-whale' landscape that we often get in spring, coverage is still at least 70%, however. Lots of ice around the house from melted and refrozen snow. Sunny and calm this morning.
4/11/2010 7:00 AM T T M 14.5 M Tmax: 43; Tmin: 23. A brief snow pellet shower around 6pm MDT. Upslope all day yesterday, clear and calm this morning.
4/12/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 12.5 M Tmax: 57; Tmin; 32. Snowcover down to 65%, a few more days like this, and we will drop below 50%. Ice on lakes is getting milky looking, and then along edges.
4/13/2010 7:00 AM 0.01 T M 12.0 M Tmax: 58; Tmin: 30. First rain of the season overnight, with a trace of snow thrown in well after midnight. This event appears to have fallen exactly on my median date of the first rain of the season (13apr). Clear, calm, and still frosty this morning.
4/14/2010 7:00 AM T T M 10.5 M Tmax: 42; Tmin: 20. A few spill-over flurries yesterday that were still visible on the (re-frozen) ground this morning. Melt-out should accelerate over the next two days. Lake ice beginning to break up - sunniest lake down to 75% ice-cover. Still no Pasque flowers, after 159 continuous nights with frost (4th longest stretch on record, so far) no big surprise.

4/17/2010 7:00 AM 0.02 0.0 M 6.0 M Tmax: 39; Tmin: 27. Evening rain shower just before we got home (9pm MDT). As best as I can tell, first pure rain of the year. Snow cover down to 55% or so. Cloudy and gloomy this morning, but it looks like this one really does focus south&west of here. Next week's storm is looking better, though.
4/18/2010 7:00 AM 0.02 0.0 M 5.0 M Tmax: 46; Tmin: 29. Another gloomy day with a few light rain showers in afternoon. Snowcover down to 50% - last non-trace snowdepth for a while!

4/20/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 57; Tmin: 30; storm is starting to affect western U.S., here is hoping for a repeat of late April '99 (quite a few similarities).

4/22/2010 7:00 AM 0.93 0.2 M T M Tmax: 54; Tmin: 29. Heavy thundershowers in evening knocked out power from about 8:30pm until 10:15pm (direct lightning hits in the neighborhood); drove home thru this thunderstorm around 9pm MDT, and it was quite a mess in North Boulder and Lefthand Canyon (lots of rocks on the road in the latter, up to a foot or more diameter). A second round of storms rumbled thru later that evening, changing to wet sloppy snow (about 0.1" H2O with 0.2" slush) after midnight. That slush was still there this morning, along the edges of the leftover snowfields (~30% coverage), and on elevated surfaces. More to come in the next 48h, looks like this April will redeem itself after all...
4/23/2010 7:00 AM 0.55 4.7 M 4.0 M Tmax: 46; Tmin: 26. Showery snow since yesterday morning, heaviest from about 7:45- 9:45pm MDT (2.8"). Snow has trouble sticking to roads so far, but ground is definitely 90%+ covered. Trees are caked in snow.
4/24/2010 7:00 AM 1.23 11.9 M 13.0 M Tmax: 33; Tmin: 23. Storm totals since Tuesday: 2.74/16.8, nice liquid, a bit underperforming snowfall. Main snow yesterday from about 11am-7:30pm (>1"/h) with 11.5". Peak of that around 1pm when it even snowed in Boulder, but they turned dry by 3pm, while our backwash snow continued well into the evening. Peak depth last evening: 14" (definitely some melting from below). Still grey sky this morning, but only a trace of snow since midnight. A clipper for tomorrow night for some more snow to keep this going...

Waiting for good coldfront to pass thru in next 24-36h, am a bit pessimistic about amount of precipitation to come with it (stand-up front), but the baroclinicity will be great (700mb temperatures are expected to drop by about 17C). Snow coverage dropping fast - maybe down to a trace.
4/29/2010 7:00 AM 0.62 9.1 M 8.5 M Tmax: 58 (all lakes became finally ice-free yesterday); Tmin: 23 (hit 29 by midnight MST - another two days in the record books for continuous frosty days - now at 174). Snow began around 10pm MDT, fairly light thru 1-2am MDT, then we got under the heavy snowband that stretched SW-NE across Boulder County, giving us >1"/h thru 7am, clearing out for now. I just edited the amounts, had made an error in summing things up. Snow cover had actually dropped below 50% yesterday, but is back to 100% for now. Will be interesting to see how much more we can milk of this cold&unsettled pattern in next three - four days.
4/30/2010 7:00 AM 0.02 0.2 M 3.5 M Tmax: 37; Tmin: 16 (despite wind - a real bora); snow ended shortly after I measured yesterday morning, with some spill-over during the day. Mostly cloudy and raw this morning.

Maybe another round of snow showers today, and a better chance tomorrow evening. Monthly totals: 4.62/44.0" - above normal for three months in a row, but quite a bit below my 20-year records for April (8.97/87.6").

If it stays windy all day, we will record our first full calendar day above freezing after 178 days with frost, just two days shy off my 20year record.
5/5/2010 7:00 AM 0.02 T M T M Tmax: 53; Tmin: 28 (it dropped just below freezing by midnight MST - now the continuous run of freezing lows has tied the record of 180!); spill-over precipitation switched to snow after being measurable (8pm), clear and finally near-calm this morning. Yesterday's winds reached 61mph on a neighbor's wind gage before knocking out power at 3:20am (took almost 6h to restore it). Apparently some full trees toppled onto powerlines in our neighborhood to cause this outage.

A couple of snow showers from about 1pm onwards, but main event around midnight, quite fluffy. Sunny and breezy this morning.

One glorious half-hour of potato-chip flakes around 7pm MDT (0.7"), otherwise a miserable mix of rain-freezing rain-small snow flakes from about 4pm to just past midnight. Foggy this morning. Almost forgot: 24.6" so far this month (my midnight-midnight readings), yielding exactly 250" so far this season, a comfortable 2nd place in 20 years. Need another 22" and change to break my all-time record (1997-98) - thought this was out of reach, not so sure anymore (although it will be harder to get better than last night's snow-H2O ratios from here on out, looking at next week's storm temperatures).

The 3d total of 2.49" is also my 2nd highest June total (early June 91 had 3.84" in 3d). Some snow pellets mixed in for the evening thunder shower after 6pm to give me a 2nd trace for frozen precipitation. Drove up Brainard Lake road to the gate where I talked with people who told me that they had received 5" of snow overnight at the lake. At this time (3pm), it was sleeting at the gate (10K), and there was snow on the ground just one mile above Peak-to-Peak highway (I would say above 9.5K). More showers today, then a slow warm-up/drying out for the rest of the week, although I am not convinced that the next trough will pass by without triggering more thundershowers around Wednesday/Thursday.

Afternoon thunderstorms, heaviest just before 7pm (I am guessing at least 0.25" in 1h), lingering well into the night, with 0.17" falling by 1am MDT. With 0.02" falling before 7am yesterday, the daily total of 0.67" sets a new record for July 7th. Mostly clear and calm this morning, with heavy cloudcover below us.
7/9/2010 7:00 AM 0.23 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 57; Tmin: 37. Another round of thunderstorms in the afternoon. This morning's low is yet another daily record (two + one tied in the last five days). Looks like our little wet spell (triggered by Alex?) is winding down, but not before dropping almost 2" of rain on us since July 1st. A remarkable wet spell, second only to the same period in 2006 which dropped over 2.6" on us. The median precipitation for the same period (July 1st thru 8th) is only 0.23", reflecting that this is typically one of our driest times of year, so this is is oven more impressive compared to what we normally get. Should keep the fire danger down a little longer.

7/13/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 78; Tmin: 54 (if we do not drop below 50F by 1am MDT, this would be our first 50F+ reading of the year, a new record for the latest such occurrence in 21 years). A bit breezy, and mostly clear this morning.
7/14/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 85; Tmin: 55. Yesterday was indeed the latest calendar date to stay above 50F in 21 years. Breezy, with a few clouds.
7/15/2010 6:50 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 81; Tmin: 47. Pretty good dew-fall last night. Sunny and calm this morning.

7/18/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 86 (highest of the year so far); Tmin: 51. Lots of cloudiness late, but no rain (or thunder).
7/19/2010 7:00 AM 0.05 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 80 (well before noon); Tmin: 50 (53 since 1am MDT). Two afternoon thunderstorms that clipped us - I believe the first one around 2pm MDT probably dropped close to 0.5" just a mile or two north of us. Ominous clouds to our west this morning.
7/20/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 84; Tmin; 52. Missed out on a few thunderstorms yesterday, still 60F at midnight, but cooling off right around observing time, with thick cloudbank just to our east (and below 8K). Noticed dewpoints in mid-70s last evening in south-central Nebraska, so there is low-level moisture heading our way...
7/21/2010 7:00 AM 0.08 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 70; Tmin: 49 (before midnight; 52 since then). Another round of near-miss thunderstorms, I could even see it in the puddles that were on our dirt road just a half mile north of our house, but not closer in. It rained 0.01" after 1am as well, so this went on into the night.
7/22/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 79; Tmin: 51. Yet again in the doughnut hole of thunderstorms erupting all around us - this is getting old! Humidity is up - the monsoon is here, I guess. A tad breezy this morning, and mostly sunny.

7/28/2010 7:00 AM 0.04 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 81; Tmin: 52. Afternoon thunderstorm (around 3-4pm MDT) missed us just to the east - obvious runoff debris on road through Jamestown afterwards. Overcast most of night and this morning.
7/29/2010 7:00 AM 0.19 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 73; Tmin: 52 (54 since midnight). We got side-swiped twice yesterday - once around 3:30pm when somewhere close to 8" of hail were reported near Nederland (and radar estimates of 2-3" southwest of NED), and once a little later when a big storm raked southern Larimer County east of Longs Peak (based on radar). Oh well, 0.19" is the highest since July 8th, so I am grateful for every fraction of an inch these days. In fact, our total of 0.41" for the 20 days from July 9th through July 28th is the lowest in my 21-year record!
7/30/2010 7:00 AM 0.23 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 76; Tmin: 49. Another round of afternoon thunderstorms yields just under 1/4". Drove to ELDORA (about 3W Nederland) yesterday evening to 'sample' the after-effects of the big hail storm they had the day before. There was still plenty of pea- to marble-sized hail that had been plowed to foot-high berms on the side of the road mostly just east of Hessie, with sufficient ground cover everywhere to still be on the order of 2-4" on average. Lots of aspen foliage down as well, and a layer of haze (around 7pm MDT) from the local evaporation. What a scene!
7/31/2010 7:00 AM 0.42 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 75; Tmin: 46 (coldest since 9 July). Lots of erosion from very intense thunderstorm that quickly moved over us between 3-4pm MDT. My best guess is that 0.4" fell in 15' or so.
8/1/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 75; Tmin: 56 (warm night!). Some thunder in early afternoon, but no storm in our vicinity.
8/2/2010 7:00 AM 0.13 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 76; Tmin: 52 (53 since midnight). Two rounds of thunderstorms in afternoon that mostly missed us, oh well.
8/3/2010 7:00 AM 0.69 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 72; Tmin: 46. Looks like we finally ended up more or less underneath the most persistent rainband, mainly from just before 5pm to 10pm MDT. Let's keep this going!
8/4/2010 7:00 AM 0.25 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 73; Tmin: 45. After only 0.04" in the first storm that dropped south along Peak-Peak hiway, we were a bit closer to the action in the evening, lingering past 10pm MDT. My 80% probability statistic for the 3rd (and 4th) of August appears to be confirmed this year.
8/5/2010 7:00 AM 0.17 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 71; Tmin: 44 (46 since midnight). Big thunderstorm grazes us just before 4pm, dropping much more to our north, but 0.17" in about 15' is nothing to sneeze at. So, the high odds for rainfall on the 3rd and 4th of August have been confirmed, both now at 17/21, or 81%.
8/6/2010 7:00 AM 0.13 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 71; Tmin: 43. Main 'event' around 8pm MDT. Measurable rain on 9 out of the last 10 days, 8 of those 9 with over 0.10" (but none bigger than 0.69"). Not exactly record-breaking, but very beneficial (no need for watering) and pleasant (except for the first day of this string, with 81F, every day had highs between 71 and 76F). Total rainfall in this period: 2.25".
8/7/2010 7:00 AM 0.07 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 74; Tmin: 48. Mostly clear night, but a bit breezy to keep temperatures up a bit compared to previous two nights.
8/8/2010 7:00 AM 0.04 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 77 (warmest of month so far); Tmin: 48. One shower in afternoon only yields 0.01", followed by highly unusual thunderstorm around 1-1:30am MDT that moved through to the NNE and seemed to focus on Lyons, then Loveland (on radar).
8/9/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 75; Tmin: 52. 'Nice' sunny summer day yesterday, followed by a 'warm' night. Clouding over towards morning.
8/10/2010 7:00 AM 0.69 T M 0.0 M Tmax: 72; Tmin: 42. Strange weather day: 0.06" fell between 8 and 9am MDT, followed by fairly gloomy weather, then a very intense thunderstorm around 1:20pm that probably dropped close to 0.5" in 10-15' (we were leaving around that time), including some pea-sized hail, followed by mostly drizzle until the evening. Clear and calm overnight gives us the coldest night since early July.
8/11/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 74; Tmin: 51 (probably lower than that from yesterday morning, but can't remember the 7am reading). Looks like a little dry spell for a couple of days.

9/3/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 57; Tmin: 28 (record-low, also earliest 28F reading on record, overall 4th earliest first frost in 21 years - August 13th, 2002 remains the earliest). Clear and calm this morning, some frost damage to garden plants that we did not cover up last night.
9/4/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 65; Tmin: 34e (44 since midnight). Breezy night to keep temperatures more or less steady from 9pm onwards.

9/7/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 60; Tmin: 31. Very windy yesterday morning, estimating top gusts around 60mph, right around the time that the Four Mile Canyon fire took off (10am-1pm or so). Wind switched from strong northwesterly to light upslope in the evening so that we got to see some floating ash flakes from the fire (which burned about 5-6 miles southeast of us). Clearing late, and drainage flow to give us much better air quality at home than down here in Boulder where we had to go today. Second freeze of the season, probably helped in containing the fire this morning.
9/8/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 67; Tmin: 35e (43 since midnight). Smoke worse up here than before, but at least not much wind. Humidity higher this morning in advance of what will hopefully be a few rain showers.
9/9/2010 7:00 AM 0.03 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 73; Tmin: 40. Afternoon rain showers graze us, hit the active fire area a tad harder, maybe 0.1" on its southern edge. Clear and calm this morning - no smoke in the air for now.
9/10/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 73; Tmin: 35. Brief windy period in evening, but not nearly as strong (or long) as on Labor Day - the fire lines appear to be holding up, and we should not have too much wind in the next two days. Looks like our next real chance for moisture (rain, not snow just yet) is about a week from today...
9/11/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 62; Tmin: 33. Back to 'nice' fall weather. Still breezy during day.
9/12/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 68; Tmin: 42. Clear all day - very dry, and a little breezy. Fire appears mostly contained, no smoke visible from afar.
9/13/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 72; TMin: 41 (42 since midnight). Fairly calm night, but cirrus shield by morning to warm us up. The big news is yet another big fire, this time west of Loveland. Went from a few acres to 600 acres in late afternoon - that plume was every bit as impressive as the 4mile one just six days earlier. Well, at least the equipment is already here, so we don't have to wait a day or two to get the 'heavy artillery'. Still no significant precipitation in sight.
9/14/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 74; Tmin; 42. Total precip since August 10th: 0.24"; previous record-lowest total for this period: 1.18" in 1995! Our atmosphere seems to have forgotten how to make it rain around here...

9/19/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 77 (daily record); Tmin: 46. Interesting inversion yesterday: around noon MDT, we were sunny, light westerly wind and 74F; on the way down to Boulder, we got under upslope cloudiness around 6.5K, and the temperature (car thermometer) dropped to 52F with light drizzle on Olde Stage Rd (~5.6K). Boulder cleared out later that day, but never got out of the low 60s (I think).

Lots of threatening clouds yesterday afternoon, with rain to our east and west, but nothing in our gage. There is still hope for Wednesday, but that's about it for the week.
9/22/2010 6:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 70; Tmin: 44 (since midnight). PM showers wet the road all the way up to just east of Jamestown, but not in my neighborhood. Today is the best chance for moisture all week, with what looks like remnants of the moisture that 'Karl' brought to Baha from the Atlantic being steered into Western Colorado (I am just hoping for some of that to spill-over). There is actually a flash-flood watch in SW Colorado where 1-2" are expected/possible. Due to tropical origin of this moisture, snowlines should stay mostly above treeline.
9/23/2010 7:00 AM 0.08 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 66; Tmin: 42. Yesterday's rain tripled the total precip this month (now at 0.12"), that's how pathetic it has been.

9/25/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 69; Tmin: 43. Still running 5-10F above 'normal', but our monthly total of 0.12" is now 2nd to 1992 (0.07"), but also 2nd lowest since records began in June 1990. No moisture in sight for at least another week...
