Partly cloudy, cool day on Friday with high mid 40s. Then a sharp cold front arrived around 6 PM and temperatures plummeted to around 20 by 8 PM with light snow beginning around 6:30 PM. Low 14F this AM -- crazy cold for this time of year. About 1" snow when I went to bed at 11 PM so snow must have increased after that. Only snowing very lightly this AM. Low density snow fell especially hard during the day on Wednesday -- accumulating at least 1" per hour for several hours -- but melted on Taft Hill road until about 6 PM. Icy overnight but snow only fell lightly overnight. New accumulation just barely keeping up with settling rate Depth of snow this AM from 13" to 19" depending on the surfact beneath -- will go with average total depth of 16" Trees still caked with snow. High yesterday about 30 F and low overnight about 25F. Continued windy with gusts over 30 mph during the day from the NNW and continued periods of blowing and drifting snow. Snow has become windpacked and dirty. Little rain shower nearly wetted the ground around 7:10 AM. Then cloudy, steady temperatures in the upper 30s. Light rain began aroudn 11 AM and changed to all snow around 2:15 PM. Came down heavily all afternoon but especially about 2:30 - 8 PM. Strong winds 4- 8 PM Was shocked to find 1.00" of water content by 6 PM with just 4" of wet snow. Roads were very bad from 5:30 - 8 PM but got better as snow intensity and winds decreased. Snow mostly done by midnight. Cloudy, upper 20s this AM, light winds and winter wonderland as everything caked with wet snow. Managed to drop my snow board core while attempting to secure a measurement. Then other storm centers developed to the east and then SW. Eventually we got just a nice, light steady rain from about 4:15-6:15 PM with no thunder and temperatures cooled nicely to the upper 60s. Convection over mountains off to a fast start with thunderheads appearing before 11 AM. We ended up under overcast skies by noon and that shut off active convection for us for the day. Cool with low-based stratocumulus much of the day. Then active convection over the mountains which moved out in several bands. Active cloud-to-ground lightning from about 4:15 - 4:45 PM with some rain and gusty winds but we missed the brunt of the storm. Cooled from a high in the mid 70s to 60 degrees by 5 PM and stayed cool all night with low low 50s with clear skies and heavy morning dew. |
