10/8/2009 7:00 AM T M M M M A very light drizzle this morning when I checked the gauge.
10/9/2009 7:00 AM 0.09 T M M M It was definitely snowing yesterday but surfaces are still warm and it was melted quickly. I wasn't around to measure how much may have accumulated on the grass, so I'm just entering a trace for snow.
10/10/2009 8:00 AM 0.25 4.5 M 4.5 M I had the funnel on initially last evening and then realized I needed to take it off. (0.02 from the ~first hour and 0.23 from this morning) Accumulated snow is difficult because of blowing conditions and also where to measure to get the most representation and warm ground surfaces which melted snow. The snow in the gauge this morning was not level and between the high and the low points, my best estimate is 4.5". Cold for early October! The snow plows went by this morning and the streets have a snow/ice layer on them.
10/11/2009 8:30 AM 0.03 T M 2.5 M Looks like freezing rain and little snow pellets on the ground this morning when I checked. It snowed yesterday after my measurement, overall a trace. My 7-year old wanted to play in the snow, but we didn't stay out long because he grew out of last year's boot and well, his feet got cold in his shoes. I got a few pictures of snow on flowers and surfaces. Very beautiful highlights.
10/12/2009 7:00 AM 0.01 T M 1.0 M Wow - snow still on the ground from Saturday.
10/13/2009 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 M 0.0 M As soon as the temperature approached freezing yesterday, the snow melted. Is it really October still? Fog this morning too - very pretty.

10/28/2009 7:00 AM 0.83 4.2 M 4.2 M rain started ~5 PM yesterday and changed over to snow ~7:30 PM. I changed out the gauge at 8 PM and there was some slush in there already. There was 0.2" of snow on surfaces. There were BIG snow flakes (~1" diameter). I measured 0.28" precipitation. This morning it was snowing very lightly at 7 AM. Near as I could tell, there was 4" of new snow and it was slushy near the bottom. The melted equivalent was 0.55"
10/29/2009 7:00 AM 0.59 15.0 M 17.0 M At 3 PM I did a measurement. The snow was accumulating around the top of the gage. I estimated there was 8" of new precipitation. The (melted) water content was 0.37. At 9:30 PM, there was 4" of very light fluffy snow. I had a lid on the container in the house and in the morning there was 0.09 water equivalent from this. At 7 AM, I measured an additional 3" of snow with a water content of 0.13. Total snow remaining on the ground was variable, but was knee deep for me at ~17" (the snow was getting into my high top rain boots)
10/30/2009 7:00 AM T T M M M I probably made an estimate of what was remaining on the ground but I didn't write it down. It melted, some, but not as much as I thought it would. The school bus driver mentioned that many county roads were still bad this morning - likely because of blowing snow, and there were numerous buses in ditches.

11/13/2009 7:00 AM T M M M M It was sprinkling right at 7. The ground was dry 15 minutes earlier. I managed to get the garlic in the ground on Wednesday afternoon, so I'm ready for more precipitation.
11/14/2009 7:00 AM 0.13 1.5 M 1.0 M It snowed heavily early in the afternoon. I don't remember what time it started, but it was snowing at 1:30 and it had stopped snowing by 3PM. It had melted some by the time I got home at 4:15 PM. So my 1.5" is a fairly good estimate judging by what was on my car and what was on surfaces when I got home and what the water equivalent was.
11/15/2009 8:00 AM 0.57 6.5 M 5.0 M The snow in the gage was not even. One side measured 4.5" the other side measured 9". When I gently shook it, I measured 6.5". One the ground, the deepest I measured was 6" with ranges of 3-5". My husband said the snow was heavy to shovel, but we were not able to roll a snowman for Sam. The earlier snow was wetter and the later snow was lighter and the ground still has some warmth - so it was heavier to shovel and we weren't able to make a snowball. Most of the snow from Friday melted Saturday afternoon. The only remaining bits were on north facing branches and shaded areas and was a trace.
11/16/2009 7:00 AM T M M M M Since I reported at 8AM yesterday, there was only a trace of snow since then as it cleared up through the morning and was mostly sunny in the afternoon. I didn't actually make any measurements, but my eyeball estimate of remaining snow this morning is 3".

11/18/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M I was running out the door today and didn't have time to measure the remaining snow. An eyeball estimate is 1-1.5" remaining. As I was driving toward town, there was frost in open field areas (on bushes, grass and very pretty). There was steam coming off the top bar of a wooden fence that the sun was shining on - cool!

The gauge was not completely level, but with a gentle shake, it was 7". I also measured 7" in many spots. The water equivalent was 0.22 (I didn't not have the opportunity to get a core sample). It was a heavy flurry of snow when I checked the gage. Not sure if this is the right description. If it was rain, it would be a heavy drizzle - so more like small snow particles coming down in a drizzle.
12/7/2009 8:00 AM 0.19 2.8 M 7.0 M Light flurries at measuring time. This snow was much more dense than yesterday.

After our second encounter with slick roads yesterday, my husband decided it was time invest in studded snow tires. Hasn't been too terribly windy and the old snow seems to be distributed fairly over the yard. With a elementary school age kid, sometimes it is harder to get out and assess the snow cover every day. Will try when I can.
12/24/2009 7:00 AM 0.14 2.0 M 9.0 M It will be a white Christmas. I just hope it isn't too windy and is being predicted. There is 9-10" snow on the ground in the back yard, 8.5 to 9.5 in the east yard, and 8-8.5" snow in the west yard - averaging to 9.0" total.
12/25/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Merry Christmas - and very windy. I didn't get out to see how the snow has been redistributed.
12/26/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Windy again - and lots of snow drifting from fields onto roads near our house. The plows have been very busy this morning. When the wind stops, I will try to give an estimate of the remaining snow.
12/27/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 5.0 M The snow was redistributed by the wind over the last two days resulting in some deeper spots and shallower spots. Under the tress is looking much sparser now. The snow does not seem to be melting all that fast. Good cover for the garden and yard (not so good under the trees which is almost bare) and great for my son to go sledding. He also loves to do snow angels in the yard. Average measurements around the yard (7, 5.5, 5.5, 5, 4.5, 4) for an overall average of 5.

2/7/2010 8:00 AM 0.02 0.2 M M M We still have quite a bit of snow remaining in the yard - on the east and north sides. The ground is almost bare on the west side and bare under the Spruce trees in the front. The north side (and sloping to the north) of the garage roof still has a couple inches of snow as well - the lower few feet. I've been surprised at how extensive and how long the snow cover lasted. Usually the snow melts the fastest along the south end of the yard, but it took longer because the wind at Christmas time blew some drifts up there. Sorry I haven't gotten out to do measurements of depth in awhile.
2/8/2010 7:00 AM 0.11 0.9 M M M This is my best estimate of snow amounts. Since it has been warmer and the temperatures were near freezing, snow was melting during the day yesterday (and I did not keep track of that closely) We still have old snow in the yard covering at least half and I haven't thought about how to represent that in the old +new snow totals. Changed daily precip from 1.10 to .11 CK.

The snow was drifted on the south side of the gauge and snow was blown under the covered picnic area a little further than usual. And the winds were gusty enough at times to blow the snow around - luckily there wasn't much to blow around.
2/15/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Windy cold day yesterday. We still have what I would call considerable snow remaining in shady areas of the yard. Overall when I take into account the Spruce trees in the front and for instance how much snow remains on the house and garage roofs (not much), I'd say I was down to less than half snow cover - which means I'm down to a trace remaining.

The back of my car faced north, and I had to exert extra effort to clear off the crusted over rear lights and even the license plate. ~1.4" snow from the afternoon snow and an additional 0.4" snow by morning.
2/20/2010 8:00 AM 0.04 0.2 M 1.5 M It was flurrying lightly at measurement - more like a drizzle of very small graupel.
2/21/2010 8:30 AM 0.29 6.9 M 8.0 M Light snow yesterday morning. Heavy snow in the afternoon between ~2:30 and 4:30 - accumulated 1.9" with a water equivalent of 0.11" We were taking a walk on the bike path next to the river near Martinez park. Very beautiful - the snow was too cold /dry to make a snowman, but was perfect for snow angels. It snowed steadily and hard enough to start accumulating on the main roads. We woke up about 7:30 and it was snowing lightly, so I didn't rush to get outside. So the next thing I know is I forgot and it's snowing much harder. There was an additional 5" of snow on the ground and the water equivalent was 0.18. After shoveling the snow - it seemed much heavier, my thought is that the measurement might have been on the low side, but I didn't get a core measurement to compare.

2/26/2010 7:00 AM T T M 2.0 M A brief snow at around 8:15 PM Enough to cover the ground but not be measureable this morning. Yesterday, the temperatures in the morning were close to 30F and the snow was soft and primed for melting. This morning, the temperatures were in the low to mid 20s and the snow was hard and crunchy - so we'll see how quickly it warms up and then melts.
2/27/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 1.0 M Warm temperatures and melting, but still thin snow cover over most of the yard.
2/28/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.5 M Quite a bit of melting and lots of spots with standing water. I looked around the garden and yard and the ground still is cold - not many signs of new growth yet.
3/1/2010 7:00 AM 0.12 1.0 M 1.0 M It flurried lightly in the morning yesterday and then started sticking to surfaces in the afternoon. I didn't check amounts last night, but my gauge had 1" this morning and previously bare ground areas had 0.5". 3/2/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.5 M Quite a bit of snow cover melted yesterday but there is still enough cover throughout the yard (older and newer) to call it 0.5 total remaining. Since it is supposed to get warm again today, I'll probably go to a trace tomorrow.
3/3/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M More than half the ground is bare around the house, but as of this morning, we still have what I would call a good amount of snow around in those more shaded areas. Some of this is where snow was shoveled, but quite a bit is from remaining drifted snow and is on average 3-4 inches.
3/4/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Significant melting of snow yesterday - this was likely helped by temperatures in the upper 20's (the night of the 2nd) and temperatures into the mid 50's yesterday (the 3rd). It was relatively warm overnight again last night (upper 20's) and expected to be warm and sunny again today - so more melting on the way.

3/24/2010 7:00 AM 1.36 10.5 M 8.5 0.99 It started to rain yesterday around 10 AM. It changed to snow around 2PM and started accumulating on the ground rather quickly. By the time I left work at 4:10, I had to swipe off ~3" of snow on my car. The wind was out of the north - north west as those sides of my car were "pasted" with snow. I swapped out the gauge at 5:30 PM. I couldn't tell how much snow there was in the gauge because it was slushy. The melted rain and snow at this time was 0.88" liquid. The core: 3.5" snow with a water equivalent of 0.69. It was a very wet snow and continued heavily through the evening. The north and northwest sides of things "grew" with snow accumulations. At 9:30 PM, I measured 5" new snow. The gauge was covered over when I changed it out so I just pressed down with a flat surface to capture what was there. I did not get a core at that time. The 5" had 0.37 water. The snow stopped by midnight? At 7 AM the next morning, there was an additional 2" in the gauge with a water equivalent of 0.11. That morning I took a core of snow on the ground. It was 8.5" with a water content of 0.99" (this is what I'm reporting as the core) Otherwise: Snow totals 3.5" + 5" + 2"= 10.5" water content: 0.88 + 0.37 + 0.11= 1.36" The lilac bushes were bowing from the weight of the snow as were many branches on the spruce trees. Many surface were "plastered" with snow on the north and west sides because the snow was wet and just stuck there. Interesting storm!
3/25/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 3.5 M Quite a bit of snow melted and at least the side road to our driveway was almost clear by the end of yesterday. This morning - still snow on the north branches of the spruce trees. More accumulated there, they didn't have as much sun on them during the day and it wasn't windy. Also interesting is the piles of snow at the base of the two elm trees on the north west sides of the trees. A combination of the snow that got "plastered" there during the storm and other snow that fell down from the tree as it melted.
3/26/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 1.5 M Still a little snow remaining in the spruce trees on the north sides. The snow seems to be deepest on the "upwind" side of things - which is a little unusual for the snow melt. Like there is remaining snow in the south west part of the yard, but there are bare spots to the south and east of the big trees. This has more to do with the wet snow clinging to the upwind side of things and accumulating more during the storm.
3/27/2010 7:00 AM T 0.0 M T M A little snow still on the north side of things. The garden is a little too wet to plant. Darn - too bad I didn't get the peas in before this last storm.

4/22/2010 7:00 AM 1.08 0.0 M 0.0 M Rain starting about 7:15. There were gusty winds, at least initially, that blew rain on the windows. I want to say from the east, but I'm not sure that I checked all the windows. I heard thunder more to the south a bit earlier (6:30 ish). By 9:30 PM we had 0.27 rain - steady and a little heavier every now and then, but nothing too bad. Around 10 as I was drifting off to sleep, I heard more thunder, but nothing that kept me awake. I hadn't emptied the gauge last night and was a little surprised this morning to find the center cup full and then a little more to make a total of 1.08. It seems like the grass and trees and plants have already responded to the moisture - it seems greener this morning!
4/23/2010 7:00 AM 0.53 M M M M An overcast day with rain off and on and more or less steady (good for the yard and garden). There was 0.38 in the gauge last night at 9:30 PM. I didn't run out to take off the funnel, so this morning, there was frozen precipitation in the gauge that looked like snow that was melting and took more than an hour in the house to melt. 5/12/2010 7:00 AM 1.39 3.7 0.94 2.0 M Spring snow is complicated! Drizzle started yesterday morning ~9AM. It was light through the morning and early afternoon. I definitely needed an umbrella at 4:30. It started changing over to snow at 6:45 and I switched out the gauge at 8:45. At that point, there was 0.2" snow in the funnel at the top and about that much on surfaces. There was 0.45 "rain" in the gauge and an additional 0.13 from the melted snow (0.58 at 8:45PM) By 10 PM when I headed to bed, there looked to be a good 1" of snow on surfaces and it was also sticking to the stone on our front porch. This morning, there was snow around the top edges of the gauge and I put a board on the top and gently pressed straight down. The snow was not evenly distributed, but a good estimate is 3.5". It melted to 0.71" Since I don't have a snow board yet I grabbed a styrofoam lid and placed that in the yard last night at 8:45. The core I did this morning looked really nice. There was 3.5" of snow and it melted to 0.81 water. Since there was a bigger difference, and I didn't have drifting near where I put the styrofoam and it was insulating, I used the core value this morning for my total (0.58 +.081=1.39) Wet heavy spring snow. Branches were broken out of the elms (one ~4" in diameter). Many of the trees and bushes were paying homage to the weather (bent over). Time will tell the effect on the blooming fruit trees and the ones that have already set fruit. I managed to get a few more onions and some carrot seeds in the ground yesterday morning. The moisture will be great for them and the other things already planted!
5/13/2010 7:00 AM 0.03 T M T M Light rain/snow mix yesterday morning, ending by noon. I didn't have the funnel in and when I glanced in the gauge last evening, it was dry except for a thin film of water around the edges. Low clouds in the evening and I wasn't paying much attention as to whether or not they were precipitating. This morning, I measured 0.03 from the gauge - likely 0.01 from yesterday morning and the rest from some time last night or overnight. Some places in the yard had 0.5 inch of snow remaining, and other areas were already clear. The peas had drops of water sitting on the tops of their leaves - not sure if this was melted snow or from the precip? My son thinks that since it snowed, Christmas is coming :)

8/3/2010 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Rain around ~ 5 PM ish - sorry, I wasn't paying close attention and the ground was wet. It was not too wet - was able to go out and pull weeds at 7:30 ;)
8/4/2010 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Rain at ~ 8:30 PM with a few claps of thunder. Looked a little more threatening just to the south of us.
8/5/2010 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M I think most of this fell in the afternoon between 3 and 4 - I was not paying close attention.

8/8/2010 7:00 AM 0.15 M M M M A trace during the day from a few storms. The measurable rain fell at night. Not sure when it began exactly, but I was awakened by the thunder and lightning and sound of rain at 2:30 AM. And I fell back to sleep after I closed a few windows.
8/9/2010 7:00 AM 0.08 M M M M A couple storms passed during the afternoon and gave a trace. The 0.8 fell between ~8:45 and 9:30 in a couple spurts.

8/11/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny just about cloud-free day. A disturbing end to the day from the fire at Forney Industries on LaPorte Ave. What a smoke plume though.
8/12/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Even though it got above 90 yesterday, there was a breeze, the humidity dipped during the day, there was some cloud cover later in the afternoon, and it cooled down at night (perfect for sleeping). The garden is doing great except for some grasshopper problems. Ah - summer - oh and the Colorado peaches have arrived!

8/17/2010 7:00 AM 0.12 M M M M Rain fell between ~4:30 and 5:30. There was a fair amount of lightning and thunder and accompanied by gusty winds as well (rain blowing up against the west windows). Oh and DEW this morning on surfaces (even the rain gauge) with temperatures at 55F at my house.
8/18/2010 7:00 AM T M M M M Right around 5:15. Enough to just wet the ground, but not enough to measure.

8/22/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cool overnight (low 60'sF) - the grasshoppers and crickets weren't moving this morning. Then hot during the day (low 90's) Severe clear.
8/23/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Very warm night - at ~3 AM, it was 75F outside and 72F this morning. Warm enough for crickets to chirp all night. Hot day yesterday - 94F in the shade under the trees!
8/24/2010 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M Rain mid-day. I was not at home, but in close proximity and it rained at work between ~12 and 1PM. The ground was dry by the time I got home from work at 4:45. Overcast this morning.

8/27/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Pretty darn clear most of the day. Scattered cumulus humulus over the foothills in the late afternoon and evening gave a little shade every now and then. The cool nights (57 this morning at my house) are great.

9/7/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Very breezy yesterday and quite a plume of smoke in the afternoon to the south from the four-mile canyon fire. Light smoke in the air this morning here - definitely looking much hazier to the south.
9/8/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Moderate smoke throughout the day yesterday - enough to make me sneeze and my nose run. Clouds appearing over the mountains later in the day. Seems clear this morning and a little brisk (53F at 7AM).
9/9/2010 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M Rain at ~4:30 yesterday - when I was picking up my son from after school camp. A light dew this morning.
9/10/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Frontal passage last evening. It got very windy last night - especially between ~8:30 and 11:00 PM. I live relatively close to Christman field and when I checked this morning, sustained winds peaked at 35 mph and gusts ranging between 35 and 55 mph. We had a smaller branch come out of one of the elms (~2-3" in diameter) and our neighbor had a larger branch come out of their poplar tree (it looked long 12 ft or more with a diameter of 6-8")

9/12/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It was one of those severe clear days (yesterday). I don't think I saw any clouds all day.
9/13/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Gorgeous fall day. Too bad for the fire west of Loveland near Carter Lake. We could see the smoke plumes early in the afternoon. It made for a pretty sunset last night and it is a bit hazy this morning with a light smell of smoke.

9/15/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Dry - There were "distant" looking plumes of smoke in the western sky last evening (which made for a pretty sunset). Also this morning, smoky haze which was much thicker to the north. I checked satellite imagery from yesterday and the smoke is likely from a fire in southwestern Utah that "blew up" later in the afternoon.
9/16/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Smells humid this morning - not sure if it is due to local watering and cooler overnight temperatures or moisture from a larger source.

9/21/2010 7:00 AM T M M M M Enough to wet the ground. I didn't get to check the gauge until the morning and although it was still wet, it wasn't quite a hundredth.

9/23/2010 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M Light steady rain between ~3:15 and 5 PM. Very humid this morning. Even though we did not get much rain, the cement was wet in places.
9/24/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Beautiful fall day yesterday. Smoke in the air this morning - we found out a stack of hay bales is on fire up the road on Overland.

3/19/2010 3/20/2010 9:30 PM 2 0.48 2.0 M All precipitation in the gauge was liquid and there was 2.0 " of snow on the ground, so the snow obviously melted at some point. Around my house and down the street as well there was a northerly wind that drifted snow - not big drifts, but enough to notice it on the lee (south side) of fences and accumulated in ditches.
