An absolutely lovely day for a tsunami event. Light breeze, nearly cloudless with a little atmospheric haze. The tsunami didn't come as a dramatic large wave, but we had an entire afternoon of strong rips, surges and sea level declines not at all normal in Hilo Bay and along the shores. The sea level rose to flow into a part of Liliuokalani Park and a parking lot. The news cameras didn't monitor the water surging in an out of the ponds of the Japanese gardens or the other river mouths and bays up and down the coast that are prone to tsunami effects, or the effects on the SE shoreline of Puna, which faces Chile. We observed the effects in Hilo Bay later in the afternoon. Lots of curious folk gathered there, all excited to see the event first-hand. Glad that we didn't have our own disaster: frees us to focus on the problems in Haiti and Chile. May God's mercy and power be with them to bring them miracles and healing. |
