12/10/2009 7:00 AM 0.19 1.0 0.19 1.0 0.39 Windy yesterday. Daily precip measurement taken from new snow core. Gauge catch was .07. Yesterday I shoveled sidewalks immediately before taking 7 a.m. precip measurements. It was not snowing then. Light snowfall recommenced at about 7:10 a.m., continuing all day till about 7:45 p.m. NOAA judged our wind to be 20-30 mph with gusts to 35. More often than not I saw snow blowing horizontally across top of gauge. At 8 p.m. I went out to take new snow measurement. Even though it snowed all day, there was no snow on any of my snow boards. Nary a flake. Wind had blown them clean. My only new-snow measurement surface was the sidewalk, which I know is not ideal, but it had acquired an average new snow measurement of 1 inch. The sun did not show itself yesterday, and our temps peaked in the mid 20s. If there was any sidewalk snowmelt, it was undetectable. Even though there was snow on the ground before yesterday's snowfall, I suppose the wind and settling accounts for why my total snow measurement this a.m. is the same as my new snow measurement.

1/21/2010 7:00 AM 0.38 M M 2.5 1.12 Gauge catch was rain from yesterday and last night. It's not raining now. Snow on the ground not melting except where grass skirts concrete. Rain falling on snow accumulation has left it real crunchy without diminishing it. Ice accretion on lilac bushes averages about .05 inch with a few tiny icicles. Sheet ice on roads and sidewalks. I have just discovered that Yaktrax spikeless snow-and-ice traction contraptions for your boots aren't worth diddly on sheet ice.
1/22/2010 7:00 AM 0.04 M M 2.0 1.01 Gauge catch was yesterday's rain. Everything remains ice encrusted, but melting has begun. Firm ice crust tops snow on the ground. Deep, thick ice ruts in the alley contain puddles. I can see water flowing under the ice that sheets sidewalks and driveway, with two small but totally clear, dry spots. Ice accretion on lilac bushes remains the same as yesterday, about .05 inch. Icicles on power lines appear to range up to about 5 inches.
1/23/2010 7:00 AM 0.02 M M 1.5 0.84 Light fog. Heavy dew. I think the moisture gauge catch might have been dew rather than rain. Icicles and sheet icing have melted away.

2/4/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Old snow on the ground hasn't changed noticably since yesterday. My yard and that of neighbors to the north are almost totally clear. 6/8/2010 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M A few sprinkles fell sometime early last evening. I noticed raindrops sitting on cars at 8 p.m., but by then drops on the concrete had evaporated. Another gentle shower commenced at 6:30 this a.m. and continued through obs time. Courage and strength to all recent tornado survivors.
6/9/2010 7:00 AM 0.29 M M M M Light showers throughout the day yesterday. Also heard rain against the north windows at 4 this a.m. Not raining at obs time, but concrete still wet and sky overcast.

6/16/2010 7:00 AM 0.11 M M M M Rain started at 2:37 p.m. yesterday, but I left to run errands and so can tell you that it stopped raining at 5 p.m. in Spring Valley, but don't know when it stopped in La Salle -- just that it had by the time I returned at 5:25. Flawless blue skies at obs time. Heavy dew.
6/17/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Heavy dew. Mackerel sky to the southeast; otherwise clear.
6/18/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Distant thunder during the 3 a.m. hour, but no rain here. Scattered cirrus at obs time. Moderate dew.
6/19/2010 7:00 AM 1.66 M M M M Two severe thunderstorms yesterday (see significant weather reports) with gentle rain in between and after. Rain ended sometime after midnight. No visible damage in my immediate area, but look for possible river flooding (Illinois), and there must be wind damage somewhere in the area. Mighty strong winds! It's a beautiful clean, fresh morning at obs time with heavy dew, bright blue skies and a smattering of diaphanous cirrus.
6/20/2010 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Gentle shower beginning at 6:25 a.m. stopped before obs time. It didn't seem like enough to give us 0.02, so I suspect it rained earlier, sometime after 2 a.m. when everything was dry. Heavy, overcast morning.
6/21/2010 7:00 AM 0.62 M M M M All of this 0.62 inch of rain accumulated in 16 minutes, between 6:46 and obs time. See severe weather report. Thunder and lightning. Sky was quite dark, requiring turning on lights in the house. Past obs time, rain continued to fall like the dickens but is easing off a bit now.
6/22/2010 7:00 AM 0.53 M M M M This rain amount was the post- 7 a.m. portion of the heavy rain surrounding obs time yesterday. See significant weather report for June 21. It stopped around 8:30 a.m. An additional sprinkle fell between 9:24 p.m. and 9:55 p.m., but that amounted to only a trace. Humid this morning with thin overcast (M1 altostratus). I can barely see blue sky through it.

Blue sky with just a few wispy H1 cirri.
6/25/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Early morning fog burned off by obs time. Heavy, drippy dew and solid blue sky.
6/26/2010 7:00 AM 0.33 M M M M Rain began at 3:26 a.m. (Thunder proves to be a great arouser to the sleeping CoCoRaHS observer who might want to know when the rain started. Didn't keep this one awake long enough to notice when it stopped, though.) Overcast, cool and humid at obs time.
6/27/2010 7:00 AM 0.08 M M M M Rain began at 6:53 a.m. and continues as of this reporting. No thunder and lightning until after obs time.

7/8/2010 7:00 AM 0.16 M M M M Trace of rain at 2 p.m. Out of town at 4:15 p.m., driving west on U.S. 52 three mi. E. of Prairie Center, drove into a wall of hard rain, lightning and south crosswind. Some dark cloud bases at 200-300 ft. Turning S. on I-39, found the S. edge of the storm 2 mi. N. of La Salle. Arriving home found partly cloudy sky, wet pavement and 0.02 in the gauge. Around 8:15 p.m. a sneaky little rain began gradually wetting the pavement again. Gained momentum by 11:40 p.m. That rain accounts for remainder of gauge catch. Mostly cloudy this a.m.

7/24/2010 7:00 AM 1.25 M M M M Hard rain began yesterday at 7:35 a.m. for a total storm measurement of 0.32. Severe storm with very high winds from 5:07 p.m. to 6 p.m. provided another 0.48 inches rain and left a few downed tree limbs in La Salle and Peru. Later saw many limbs down in Princeton where, when I arrived at 7 p.m., the town was experiencing at least a partial power outage. Returning from Princeton at 9:55 p.m., observed lightning across northern skies with a nearly full moon in clear southern skies. Thunder awakened me at 6:10 this a.m. when it was raining hard. 8/4/2010 7:00 AM 0.60 M M M M Wow! Awakened at 5:22 a.m. by noise I'd never heard before. Entered vacant west bedroom, where I'd left a west window open, to find rain water on the floor 9 feet in from the window. A small quilt hanging on east wall was being blown about by the wind so that wooden rod from which it hangs was banging against wall. Rain water standing in the street -- rare since I live on top of a hill. Heard first thunder at 5:30. At obs time, wind stopped and rain still lightly falling. Solid cloud cover.
