Windy yesterday. Daily precip measurement taken from new snow core. Gauge catch was .07. Yesterday I shoveled sidewalks immediately before taking 7 a.m. precip measurements. It was not snowing then. Light snowfall recommenced at about 7:10 a.m., continuing all day till about 7:45 p.m. NOAA judged our wind to be 20-30 mph with gusts to 35. More often than not I saw snow blowing horizontally across top of gauge. At 8 p.m. I went out to take new snow measurement. Even though it snowed all day, there was no snow on any of my snow boards. Nary a flake. Wind had blown them clean. My only new-snow measurement surface was the sidewalk, which I know is not ideal, but it had acquired an average new snow measurement of 1 inch. The sun did not show itself yesterday, and our temps peaked in the mid 20s. If there was any sidewalk snowmelt, it was undetectable. Even though there was snow on the ground before yesterday's snowfall, I suppose the wind and settling accounts for why my total snow measurement this a.m. is the same as my new snow measurement. |

Gauge catch was rain from yesterday and last night. It's not raining now. Snow on the ground not melting except where grass skirts concrete. Rain falling on snow accumulation has left it real crunchy without diminishing it. Ice accretion on lilac bushes averages about .05 inch with a few tiny icicles. Sheet ice on roads and sidewalks. I have just discovered that Yaktrax spikeless snow-and-ice traction contraptions for your boots aren't worth diddly on sheet ice. |

Gauge catch was yesterday's rain. Everything remains ice encrusted, but melting has begun. Firm ice crust tops snow on the ground. Deep, thick ice ruts in the alley contain puddles. I can see water flowing under the ice that sheets sidewalks and driveway, with two small but totally clear, dry spots. Ice accretion on lilac bushes remains the same as yesterday, about .05 inch. Icicles on power lines appear to range up to about 5 inches. |

Later saw many limbs down in Princeton where, when I arrived at 7 p.m., the town was experiencing at least a partial power outage. It rained for about 1.5 minutes yesterday, starting at 4:29 p.m., 8 blocks south of my house, but not a drop at my station. At obs time, small white and gray low-altitude cumuli are rapidly blowing overhead, northward. No wind at ground level. Total rain for August, 1.76". |
