The temperature is fluctuating. We've had freezing rain, rain and snow. The high wind gusts were disruptive of the tube gathering ability. I moved the unit to a better location, I hope. We've had dustings of snow that was melted by sleet that was covered by more snow and melted by morning by the rain. |

Nolan, There is a problem collecting moisture from a snow board. As the snow melts it runs off or collects on the bottom and is hard to retreive for the reading in the form of ice of a specific area. It is difficult to determine total moisture available. I have a pail cover that collected snow and its melt. If we could find a unit/units the same area as oour collection tubes and place several of these on a snow board it would be a simple task to keep track of the available moisture of several incidents at a time and on a continuing basis. Perhaps Cocorahs could get a company like those that cast those little store fruit and veggie plastic containers to make those without holes and of a specific size to be used in Cocorahs program. By mass producing them and having a national outlet we could purchase them very economically through you or our regional leaders. Just a thought to bring the program to the next level. Vince |

Around .3" of snow. The snow pack is again complete in our area. Walking out over the patio and yard, there was a lot of moisture left in the foot prints. Its around 32F with a Humidity of 75%. Core samples taken can't retreive the melt off thats gone. I sm going to set out white rectangular planting containers. That way as the snow etc. melts, I will have not only a core sample from each new fall but, I can use one for one fall, the second for both the first and second and so on. Each is capable of collecting about 4" of water. Rotations will continue until there is no more snowfall. |

The Naked Ladies are spreading their leaves and bulding for spring. The Maple syrup is running. If we don't get below freezing soon the flower The buds will break and the run will be over. The growing degree days (GDD's) can be extremely hazardous to early bloomers like peaches etc. I hope we get back down before the flowers expand to the extent they can be damaged by another cold snap which is almost certain around here. |

The cracklings have taken up residence in the elm tree about 25 feet to the North of my front door again today. It's spring time. 57F, 34% humidity. The snow cap is almost all gone except for about 5% maximum. There is about the same amount in shoveled piles along side the walks, driveways and roads but, it is going fast. No precipitation over night. It has just begun raining in the last 10 minutes. We live on the north side of the Valparaiso Moraine on the watershed leading to Lake Michigan less than 5 miles North. Our rivers and streams empty fairly quickly and usually only scattered spots worry about severe flooding. We do have some areas of pocket flooding. Our soil is now pretty well saturated. For maybe the first mile it is clay and from there to the lake is sand..
On the South side of the Moraine just a few miles South they have mostly clay. They are in the Kankakee watershed. They are beginning to have increasing flooding. The further south the worse it is becoming.
Our news reports are now beginning to map out flood areas for watches etc. We ar about 30 t0 35 miles, as the crow flies SE, of Chicago. There water drains mostly into the Mississippi water shed.

1.32"fell during the intermittent thunderstorms that passed through last night. The mosquitoes are steadily increasing. Every bit of standing water is filled with little wigglers. It seems we barely get the water poured out and here comes some more rain. Except in the low spots where it can accumulate most of it runs off into the Lake Michigan watershed. In the more populated areas the dumping of overflow sewage is causing numerous beach closings because of high bacteria counts especially E. Coli. Like in "Jaws" the beaches were open over the July 4Th holiday. Now that the tourists are down, lots of the beaches are again closed. |

the rain was extremely scattered in local falls. Last night I had to go over about 2miles North and 3miles east. It was dry when I left. When I arrived at the other place trees had been knocked down and a deluge had fallen. The event was cancelled. I returned home to a still dry area. It began raining softly for a couple of hours. It stopped and then another storm hit. Most of the rain fell on the overnight thunderstorm watch. |

Our watershed to Lake Michigan is never over 5 miles from the lake in our area. In our area the water is efficiently carried off and very little flooding occurs except in isolated spots. The Chicago watershed that artificially is attached to Lake Michigan is suffering severe flooding. They are also receiving more rain because Lake Michigan acts as a buffer for our area and often deflects the weather systems away from us. |

We had all the makings of a good storm. There was a fair wind, plenty of lightening and beautiful thunder rolls and crescendos. Alas my collection tube was bone dry. |

Nice sunny day. Around 80F. Perfect for the annual golf outing. I am looking forward to a beautiful day with my son and two grandsons on the links. A few clouds and no rain in the immediate forecast. About the first time since league started in the spring. |

Most of the rain and lightening appeared to head North over Lake Michigan. The rain fell softly and evenly. No big down pour. |

No rain the past couple of days. The temperatures have stayed below 80 F. You can feel the fall transition beginning. The trees don't show any fall decline yet. The Yellowing of leaves on the Tulip trees are just becoming noticeable for the first time this season. |

No precipitation. We are experiencing the fall change over in temperature and feel in the air. Again some of the more sensitive plants are showing signs of lack of moisture. Some of the trees in the popular family are turning. |

No precipitation for the past 24 hrs. some is expected in a day or two. We are drying out a bit now. The temperatures have moderated in the last week or so. We are having fall like temperatures sans the rain. My fall plant relocation is going great. I won't have to water if the rain comes. The ground needs water either way. |

gentle rain of .27". More forecast for the next couple of days in our area. Lake Michigan moves the weather around quite a bit here. Its always a crap shoot as to what area will get hit and which will be spared. Even when I lived 600 miles away from the Chicago area we heard the old saw, "If you don't like the weather in the Chicago area, wait a minute it'll change." |

Earlier we had some pretty good gusts. enough to knock over some tall potted plants and help self prune smaller dead branches on the trees. The rains weren't so spectacular. we had a little thunder and lightening. Nothing to brag about. the rains were generally intermittent. a sprinkle or two in mid day and then later in the evening. |

We had some accompaning lightening and thunder. We were without electricity for a while. I suspect it was an overload with the A/C it was +90F and high humidity before the rains came. They often shut down part of the grid when that happens. Of course the electric company has their patented excuses ready why asked what happened. We are still low on soil humidity according to my plants. Not drought but some stress. |

No rain the past 24 hrs. The temperature here, near Lake Michigan is starting to fluctuate a lot. 20 F shifts happen quickly. The high variations for the day changes by that much days in a row before settling down to more even temperatures. You know what they say about the weather in the Chicago land area? "If you don't like the current weather , wait a minute." |

The rapid fluctuation of weather systems along with the off shore breezes from Lake Michigan is keeping our area moist with little real rain developing The accumulation of ground water isn't keeping up with the perceived humidity index. The cold from the North and the warm from the south are moderated by Lake Michigan's 68 F water temperature. We are experiencing a couple of days in the 80's and 98's and then a few in the 60 and 70's. The evening temperatures are dropping low enough to make the football games comfortable. |

Although the humidity is up, and the temperature is dropping, it was a great night to watch high school football. No rain or precipitation again in the past 24 hrs. The plants in the pots are needing extra watering because of the lack of rain. We average about 49+ " a year. With your new program of electronically keeping track for us, it should be even easier to know exactly how much precipitation we get. It should be a great boost to making sure we measure and record every day not just on the precipitation days. |
