3/30/2010 12:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Although the ponds and swamps are still quite full of water, the rest of the area is getting pretty dry. We need some rain to keep the fire hazard down.
3/31/2010 12:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Warm dry wind along with our lack of rain caused several brush fires around the area. We badly need some soaking rains! DNR has fire hazard rated at "Moderate" but I think it should be raised to "High."
4/1/2010 12:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another day of brush fires. Saw two huge plums of smoke in the Northern Metro on my drive home from work around 7 pm. DNR sign still has fire risk at Moderate. Channel 9 News says it's at Very High. What's up with that?
4/2/2010 12:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Brush Fires weren't as bad today due to rise in humidity. I also fired up my StormTracker, lightning detector, in anticipation of the beginning of our thunderstorm season.
4/3/2010 12:00 AM 0.17 M M M M My electronic rain gauge recorded 0.16" of rain today. The maximum rainfall rate was 0.22" per hour between 2 and 3 pm. StormTracker recorded 3,890 lightning strikes and it appeared as though the most intense cells were over the Southern Twin Cities then moved off into Western Wisconsin. Gusty winds later in the evening, peak gust was from the West at 29 MPH.

4/11/2010 12:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It's like a desert here! Relative Humidity levels dropped to around 15% during the day. Ponds and swamps are starting to go dry. Fire danger is rising again! Sorry for the late report. Fell asleep before I could enter the data last night. Wore out from the Skywarn Workshop all day. :)
4/12/2010 12:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another day of desert-like conditions with Relative Humidity hovering around 17%. I saw several smoke plums in the northern metro area around 4:30 pm. Brush Fires are breaking out again. I also saw a spectacular Dust Devil in the back lot of Jackson Street Motors Car Sales, in St. Paul around 4:50 pm. That's on the NE corner of Maryland & Jackson Streets. It was about 10 feet in diameter and rose about 50 feet in the air. It was one of the fastest spinning Dust Devils I have ever seen. I wish I had a camera at the time.

4/14/2010 12:00 AM 0.62 M M M M Electronic Rain Gauge said 0.64" Maximum rain fall rate was 0.27" per hour between 5:00 and 6:00 am. StormTracker recorded 22,218 lightning discharges for the day. (StormTracker has about a 300 mile range for coverage.) We had enough rainfall to temporarily reduce the brush fire hazard!
4/15/2010 12:00 AM 0.17 M M M M Electronic Rain Gauge also said 0.17" today.
4/16/2010 12:00 AM 0.23 M M M M Electronic rain gauge also read 0.23" for the day. Maximum rainfall rate was 0.10" per hour between 3 am and 4 am. There were two different rainfall events. The first one between 2 and 5 am,(0.15"); and the second one between 7 and 9 am,(0.08"). The first one was more significant and I will enter it in the Duration Information area.

It was not the sound of a jet plane, but a very long lasting rumble like thunder. I went and checked StormTracker, and it had indeed recorded a single lightning discharge fairly close by. I then went outside and looked at the sky, only to see nothing but stars overhead. StormTracker was not seeing any other close lightning, and only recording about 1 to 3 strikes per minute from distant storms. In the time it took me to walk down my driveway and retrieve my trash barrel (about 5 minutes) it went from just overcast to almost continuous lightning and thunder! Next came the wind with a peak gust of 43 MPH from the WNW, then the heavy rains began. StormTracker went from recording a small area of lightning to the NW of me, to an all out Yellow Alert condition (over 500 Strikes per minute) in less than 10 minutes!
