12/17/2009 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Much warmer this AM low around 0345 of 25 under clear skies
12/18/2009 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Low of 31.2 under a cloudy sky. Possible frozen precip this PM
12/19/2009 6:00 AM T M M M M Very light sprinkle just after 0600 report Friday morning some occasional light freezing mist overnight.
12/20/2009 6:00 AM T M M M M Cold & damp this morning. Overnight low 23.2. When combined with the light mist & freezing fog encountered overnight, all the elevated surfaces between the back door & the rain gauge had a very thin layer of ice. The concrete however was clear. Did receive a light snow flurry beginning at 3:40 PM which lasted for about 20 minutes. No accumulation was noted.
12/21/2009 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds, then clearing early Sunday. Even with the full sun,the gentle southerly breezes turned a light jacket into a good companion when outdoors. Still, t'was a beautiful December day in the Ozarks. With the starry skies & calm winds overnight, the colder air certainly made its way into the Finley River Valley. As of 0544 hrs we had chilly 21.9 degrees. There does appear to be some fog right down on the river but nothing widespread. With rain & possible T'storms progged for Tuesday night into Wednesday, then a chance of snow Thursday into Friday, it looks to be an interesting weather week.
12/22/2009 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Wonderfully sunny day yesterday. Near sunset, had those high "mare tail" clouds beginning to appear. Actually warm enough to get out in shorts & long sleeves and ride 10 miles on the Raleigh. Might get another ride in today before the rains come. With the southerly wind the temp overnight only went down to 33.5 under mostly clear skies.
12/23/2009 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Scattered showers, even a rumble of thunder earlier but nothing in the rain gauge as of 0545. It appears that may change during the day as radar shows the progged rain & t'storms approaching from the southwest. Currently, under solid overcast we have 51.6 degrees & a 10 MPH southerly breeze.
12/24/2009 6:00 AM 0.27 0.0 M M M With the exceptions of a 30+/- minute period of moderately heavy rain Wednesday morning and a light shower around 2AM our precipitation amounted to not much more than the occasional light drizzle to a mist. With a light generally SSE breeze overnight, the temps held steady between 51.2-50.8 overnight but in the last 30 minutes the wind has started shifting, now coming from the East with a corresponding downward movement of the thermometer to 49.5 degees. It will be personally interesting to look at totals from others in the area as watching radar yesterday showed heavier rain of longer duration in several locations close to CR-1 especially to the southeast of my location.
12/25/2009 6:00 AM 0.42 0.4 0.01 0.5 0.01 Had some form of precip. all day Thursday. Mostly light rain, which would occasionally taper off to a drizzle or mist. Around 6:15 PM, the rain started in earnest. Driven by a sharp northerly wind received almost 75% of the days liquid precip in about 20 minutes. The heavy rain tapered off to light again until around 9:30 started hearing the tinkle of ice tapping at my north facing windows. Removed inner tube at that point, measuring .41 of an inch of rain. This morning awoke to a scant four tenths of an inch of blowing snow, 15.7° and some nasty north winds. Melted sample of what appears to be a very dry snow and the remnant ice from the change over to snow yielded only .01 of an inch of moisture. This agreed with what I had on my snowboard. Hoping all have a safe and Merry Christmas Day and be careful out there.
12/26/2009 6:00 AM T M M 0.5 0.01 After some early clouds and a few light flurries, the sun broke out and it was a photographers dream! Any snowmelt yesterday was negligible compared to displacement by the wind. Still have .3 inches of snow on the snowboard with perhaps a trace due to newly fallen snow. The winds shifting from a slightly more southerly flow along with clouds coming in caused the temperatures to drop not as much as I had expected which is a good thing. At 5:45 AM, I have 21.1° where it has been for the past 2 hours. Locally, we are expecting a few “wrap-around” flurries today but no additional accumulation, oh and cold the remainder of the weekend. No pedaling outdoors for a few days...
12/27/2009 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 0.00 Saturday was clear with strong westerly winds. The sun cleared the remnants of snow from all areas not in the shade. The reporting period low was at 7:17 AM with a temperature of 19.9° while the high was 30.2° which was reached at 1:37 PM. With a tolerable west wind, the temperature at observation time stands at 21.5° under starry skies. Looks like a daytime warming trend til midweek then another chance for precipitation.
12/28/2009 6:00 AM T M M M M Sunday dawned clear but clouds moved in producing an occasional flake of snow. I guess legally we had a trace of precipitation but one would be hard pressed to find where it wandered off too. While not as strong, the wind was still quite noticeable keeping the wind chill values down in the uncomfortable zone all day. Had a high yesterday of 25.3° at 3:10 PM with the overnight low of 18.8° at 9:25 PM. At observation time, I have overcast skies with a cold west breeze blowing at about 8 MPH and a temperature of 26.2°.
12/29/2009 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M After an overcast start, skies cleared nicely by late afternoon. It remained fairly cool with light winds dancing around the upper left hand quadrant of the compass. Had a high of 35.4° with the overnight low of 16.7°, at 2:26 AM. At 6:00 AM OBS time skies are back to overcast, temp was on the rise at 22.2° and a very light wind has shifted fully to the northeast. 60 % chance of snow PROG for the upcoming overnight hours with timing/AMT post midnight local and < 1”. NWS forecast discussion hinting at some light snow over the upcoming weekend. Still a few remnants of snow left on the north side of the house and barn and some can be found in the woods but the rest is now a Christmas memory.
12/30/2009 6:00 AM 0.09 0.7 0.09 0.5 0.09 Noted a few flakes at 9:50 PM last night. Awoke to a pretty, overnight snowfall measuring .7 inches. A light freezing mist still falling with radar indicating more precipitation on the way. Temps throughout the day held in the upper 20’s finally hitting 30.1 at 12:40 PM. We had a daytime high of 32.3° reached at 4:19 PM. Overnight temperatures hovered just a smidgen below the freezing point making for perfect wet snow conditions.
12/31/2009 6:00 AM 0.06 T M M M Had just a few flakes of snow for about 30 minutes after Wednesday’s observation. It was just enough to dust where my footprints were on the patio. Went ahead and counted it as a trace. That was followed by drizzle, mist and then more drizzle and more mist. Was glad the overnight temperatures hovered just above the freezing mark with final observed temp at 6:20 AM still 33.1°. Yesterdays high was 35.9° which posted at 3:57 PM. Looks like the NWS has pulled the single digit lows and the snow chances for the weekend although mid-teens are chilly enough for my liking. The Tuesday night into Wednesday morning snow was short-lived as there is none left out on the snowboard.
1/1/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cloudy throughout the day yesterday. Skies finally cleared enough after sunset to allow viewing of the New Years Eve "Blue Moon".The obs period high was 32.9 at 6:01 AM. The obs period low is my current temp of 11.6. Once more hints in the very long term that a disturbance now west of the Aleutians may drop to the central US. Combined with a possible return of low level gulf moisture we could be looking at a major winter event. Situation well worth watching.
1/2/2010 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Weather wise, not a bad New Years Day. Clear, yet a faint high haze present from about 10:00 AM until around 2:00 PM when a few wispy high clouds began moving in from the north. Yesterdays high was 28.4 and so far I am showing a low of 8.0 at obs time. There still exists for the Ozarks a strong possibility of 1 and perhaps 2 snow events looming on the mid and far horizons.
1/3/2010 6:00 AM 0.19 4.2 0.19 4.0 0.19 Woke up to 4.2 inches of snow of the ground. The low for the obs period was 8.0° at 6:01 AM Saturday. The obs high was 22.1° at 3:37 PM. The current temperature is 18.7°. First very light snowflakes began at 7:40 PM and currently still have a light snow falling. Light winds out of the east at around 5 MPH. (Original obs time 6:00 AM Report edited at 8:06 AM) Noted 3.5 inch new snow depths at a couple stations close by. Double-checked measurements and confirmed 4.2 inches. Amazing the difference a mile or two can make.
1/4/2010 5:45 AM 0.12 1.9 0.17 6.0 0.29 Light snow & flurries through 2:00 PM then flurries off & on through the overnight hours. Awoke at 4:30 to an occasional large flake of snow still drifting down from the overcast sky. High yesterday of 20.8 degrees @ 12:27 PM & 8.2 degrees and a very light N breeze at @ obs time.
1/5/2010 5:45 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 5.0 0.14 Clear starry skies at 5:45 with just a hint of wind from the NW High yesterday of 13.2 degrees @ 3:09 PM & a low -3.8 degrees @ obs time.
1/6/2010 6:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 3.0 0.09 The high clouds at sunset gave a hint of what to expect today & tonight. High yesterday of 17.3 degrees @ 3:43 PM & 15.4 degrees @ obs time. 17 y/o neighbor decided to take out phone pedestal. Just now got internet back up.
1/7/2010 6:30 AM 0.03 0.4 0.03 3.5 0.12 Snow began yesterday at 2:30 PM , tapered off around 4:30 until around 5:30 then once more began again. The high of 24.2° was reached at 2:20 PM and the low at obs time is 6.3°. Currenty, blowing and drifting snow. Almost all local public schools closed.
1/8/2010 6:00 AM T T T 2.5 0.08 Very cold under cloudy skies at 5:30 with NW winds guessing it to be around 10 MPH. Some minor drifting yesterday on the back roads. Continued to receive very light snow for about 1:45 minutes after obs time yesterday with only a dusting of additional accumulation. High yesterday of +9.2 degrees @ 2:36 PM & a low +0.8 degrees @ obs time. Once more school closed due to weather.
1/9/2010 7:00 AM T T T 2.5 0.07 Well, the pipes haven’t froze, yet. Good, cold, morning from the heart of Christian County. We had clouds almost all day yesterday. There was a short 30-minute gap in the clouds to the south which allowed a few rays of sun, so I know it is still up there. Had a light flurry beginning around 7:30 that lasted all day, even during that short sunny period. No melting that I could discern. Low yesterday of +0.8° with a high of +7.2°. Looks like a warm-up is in store somewhere around June although the prognosticators say by Wednesday we may break 40°. Call me a skeptic but...
1/10/2010 6:00 AM T T T 2.0 0.09 The clouds began to disappear yesterday. It really became noticeable around noon with several patches of blue visible. Thought about discounting the few flurries that fell before 9:00 AM but a trace is a trace is a trace... so that’s what we received. As for melting, perhaps some did occur as I only have 1.8” left on the snowboard. When melted it still made .09” of moisture. Indicates to me more of a compaction event than melting, as the moisture content didn’t drop at all. Maybe my assignment for the day, gather that same info from other reports and cipher on it. Can’t let the scientists have all the fun. Current temperature of -4.3° is up from the overnight low of -6.6°, which was reached at 2:31 AM. The 1:51 PM high Saturday was a warm 13.1°. Right now the wind is barely stirring but what wind there is, is out of the south! All things considered, that is a wonderful sign. Even when the sun was out we don't appear to be getting a lot of solar gain. I wouldn’t want to be dependent on the sun for hot water right now.
1/11/2010 5:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.5 0.07 Once more, a 24-hour cycle can make a major difference in the temperature we are experiencing. At obs time yesterday -4.3°, this morning, 28.1°. Looking at my temp readings overnight I had slowly falling temps from a 3:28 PM high of 26.3° until 10:18 when I bottomed out at 20.9°. Afterwards a 5° rise to 25.9° 12:05 AM. Only thing I can see is a corresponding drop in the barometric pressure at around the same time. At 3:25 the temp had risen to 28.7 but now I have 28.1°. While shaded areas didn’t experience much melting, full sun made a major dent in the exposed snowpack. Down to just over half an inch on the snowboard although some drifts still have in excess of 6” remaining.
1/12/2010 5:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The daytime temps combined with bright full sun took care of all but just a thin layer of snow on the snowboard. High yesterday of 36.5 @ 3:43 PM. The low is the current temp of 16.8 with a light NW wind. Clearing today 35 for a high.
1/14/2010 5:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Missed yesterday due to an overnight stay in Columbia. Warmed up to 51.4 at 4:41 PM. Nothing in the rain gauge upon my return. Currently under clear skies holding above freezing at 33.7 with a moderate SE breeze. Even with a chance of drizzle today the high is supposed to be around 47. I will have the Raleigh out & get 10 or so miles in.
1/15/2010 7:00 AM T M M M M Warmed up to 54.6 at 3:27 PM. Just a light mist overnight which resulted in a trace of precip. in the rain gauge. Overcast skies and a S to SW wind giving the current temp. at 42.3 with dense fog <1/4 mile visibility in places. . Soil moisture must be high. The driveway is getting soupy. Could use some sun and wind to help dry the stuff up on top. 12 miles today if time, fog and legs permit.
1/18/2010 6:00 AM T M M M M Cool & damp Sunday in the Ozarks. Early on, encountered visibilities <1/4 mile in some locations SE of Nixa. Fog had generally lifted by 9:00 having gave way to an intermittent light mist 'til noon. High Sunday was 42.3 reached @ 3:38 PM More dense fog formed overnight as the ambient matched the dew point and has changed over to a "freezing fog". Current visibility here <1000'. Temp dropped to 31.5 with a SE breeze guesstimated @ around 5 MPH.
1/19/2010 5:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Absolutely wonderful weather day in the Ozarks. Early dense fog cleared just prior to dawn but not before temps fell below 32 making conditions ripe for black ice in some locations. After sunrise a quick warm up took care of any slick spots. Full sun, highs in 50's and a light southerly breeze made for excellent riding conditions. Some clouds are expected today but the warm temps should remain in the area through at least Saturday.
1/20/2010 6:00 AM 0.16 M M M M Another great day in the Ozarks. Broken, high clouds in the afternoon foretold last nights rain. After a low in the 40's yesterday morning, it didn't take much to hit a high of 59.8. Clear with stars visible overhead & a moderate wind out of the SE at obs time. There appears to be a few broken clouds off to the west.
1/21/2010 6:00 AM 0.53 M M M M Sunny with a warming southerly wind were the dominant factors in the daytime weather Wednesday. However about 2PM the winds began to slack off then shift around to the north. This caused a 6 degree drop in temp over the course of an hour. It also made for a chilly ride home on the cycle! Overnight, clouds & rain moved in & it appears to be an all day event. Oh, here is another CoCoRaHS hazard. The skunks are out. One was prowling about the back yard this morning.
1/22/2010 6:00 AM 0.02 M M M M
1/23/2010 7:00 AM T M M M M Just enough mist and drizzle Friday morning to justify a trace report. Looks like we're going to get considerably more than a trace over the next 24-48 hours.
1/24/2010 6:00 AM 1.13 M M M M A dreary day across the Ozarks yesterday with low clouds and rain most of Saturday. Temperatures hung in the mid to upper 40° range with a moderate southeasterly wind. Looking at a dry day or two then, we have a good chance of more wintery weather come Wednesday, Thursday and into Friday.
1/25/2010 6:00 AM T M M M M A lingering sprinkle early Sunday morning accounted for the trace of precip in the gauge. Had northerly winds & clearing skies around mid-day but by 6:00 PM, Cyclonic flow brought a west wind & a. return of c clouds. Those clouds deposited a few flakes of snow overnight however, there wasn't enough to contribute to the measurable precip. Looks like a major winter storm event is on tap for Wednesday through Friday. When talking about the upcoming storm & the types of wet/frozen stuff, yesterdays NWS Forecast Discussion said to expect everything "but the kitchen sink". Should be interesting.
1/26/2010 5:50 AM T M M M M Blustery would be an apt description of yesterdays weather conditions. West to northwest winds gusting into the 30 MPH range with temps to match made for a rough day to be outdoors. Light blowing snow flurries off & on all morning once more accounted for the trace in the rain gauge. Looks like NWS is calling for the bulk of precip on Wednesday,Thursday & Friday to be south of us. Still some debate on how much locally.
1/27/2010 5:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Except for the winds, Tuesday wasn’t a bad day weather-wise. Sunny conditions prevailed with temps reaching the mid 30° range by mid afternoon did allow for some surface drying but in places the driveway is still a messy, muddy challenge to navigate. The prognostication focus is on the winter storm heading this way. The storm track and amounts began to firm up overnight. Where as yesterday the northern border of the Winter Storm Watch area generally bordered U.S. Highway 60, that border has been bumped northward about 20 miles to the “I-44” corridor. Thursday evening and all day Friday appear to be the critical time frame for snowfall. Locally anywhere from 6-8 inches are progged. Less mention of ice in the NWS discussion, and that is a good thing.
1/28/2010 6:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Drizzle & light rain early Wednesday. Currently clear overhead but high clouds off to the south & west. Checked the E-supplies last night. Double checked the generator (after pulling the main breaker) & pulled in extra wood. Up to 7" possible with drifting supposed to start tonight with sleet & freezing rain.
1/29/2010 7:00 AM 0.07 1.1 0.07 1.0 0.07 Heavy snow might be an understatement. Awoke at 3:15AM with no snow falling. At 3:20 a few small flakes had just started drifting down. By 4:00 the driveway was covered and now at 7:00 we have 1 inch on the ground with heavy snow still falling.
1/30/2010 7:00 AM 0.51 6.1 0.51 7.0 0.58 Had mostly moderate snow throughout the day Friday with several short bursts of heavy snow most lasting between 10-30 minutes. The easterly winds, guessing at around 10-15 MPH, did move some snow into drifts along the north-south fences. Got out and shoveled the driveway clean by 3:30 PM but by 8:00 last night, it had been covered once more by 3/4-inch of new and blown snow. That’s ok, I needed the exercise. Total event snowfall here was 7.2 inches with a total moisture content of.58 inches. The daily observation period snowfall amounted to 6.1 inches with moisture content of .51 inches. Noticed in the past I seem to have slightly higher snow accumulations than neighboring stations, sometimes showing a ¼-inch or more differential. Wonder if my being out close the edge of the bluff and the surrounding cedar trees might account for that. Nearest tree line is about 100 feet away. Perhaps as the wind carrying the snow is slowed by the trees, it releases it’s snow load.

It appears as if the forecast combined with the recent snow storms has gotten the attention of the general public. The Wal-Mart lot was packed all day yesterday. When I did venture into the store it looked like "Black Friday" with shoppers 7 deep at the registers. Bottled water, snack "food", cereal & other essentials dominated the shopping carts.
2/8/2010 6:00 AM T 0.3 T 0.5 T Light snow overnight continuing through obs time. 1/4" on the grass & snowboard. Nothing on the concrete driveway but a light coating on the blacktop roadway.

Had nothing here but a "pop-up" thunderstorm in the Clever/Billings area around 5:00 & a line of westerly moving storms comming out of the Howell/Wright County area (that died out after sunset, just before getting here) may show the import of CoCoRaHS station saturation in a given area.
