A few rumbles of thunder with some briefly heavy rain at some time in the night when I didn't wake up enough to see what time it was. But it sounded nice and now it's spring-like, warm and moist with sunny breaks. |

Rain was light and intermittent most of the time yesterday and overnight, until sometime between about 09Z-11Z this morning. For the past hour, heavy rain and windier than yesterday (from the NE, my guess is between 20-25 mph sustained; large branches on mature red oaks in constant motion). temp 47F. Probably the nastiest day out in the 13 years I've lived here. Cool!

Light glazing on trees and bushes, too thin around twigs and branches to measure (a few hundredths of an inch) but visible as little icicles (up to about 1/3 of an inch) which have visibly grown in the last hour or so giving a very pretty silvery effect. Light glaze also on lower-down surfaces like some plastic bags and my rain gauge. No ice on driveway or wooden deck that I can find - I very much doubt any possible effect on travel here.

Snowpack ranges from 3.2" where it was in full sun yesterday to 6" on mostly shaded grass, 4.3" is my estimate of average. And a metal-ruler-bendingly dense, icy snowpack it is - in places it supports my 160 lbs, and it easily supports my 75-lb greyhound everywhere. Last night's min temp 29, currently 31. |

Light freezing rain falling, temp 32. The rain is freezing on elevated surfaces (a trace of glazing on trees, cars) and on existing snow and ice, but not on wooden decking or concrete driveway. I can't see it currently having any impact on bare roads, just adding a thin layer of ice to any existing snow/slush/ice. |

Temp was 31 at 7 a.m., 32 now. Freezing fog is just now dissipating. From either the fog or residual moisture from yesterday's rain that froze overnight, everything (concrete driveway, deck, car) has a thin layer of ice. Melted-equivalent hasn't dropped much from the roughly 1.1" of a couple of days ago because the snow is even denser. It looks like much of yesterday's rain was still seeping through the already icy snow when the temp dropped below freezing last night, and in most of the yard I can walk around on top of the 3"-average snowpack. |

Wet snow overnight changed to rain between 7:00 and 7:30 a.m. this morning. Temp steady at 33 since about 3 a.m. Wind has gone from near calm for most of the night to pretty strong from the NE in the last couple of hours; a few small snow-laden branches are breaking off trees (and I just heard what sounded like the crack of a pretty big one somewhere in the neighborhood). But it looks like this storm will be just cold rain for the rest of the day so I imagine most branches will be more or less bare soon. |

This new 1.98" all fell as rain, a little of it freezing rain yesterday evening. But this location came very close to a major ice storm - the entire day, my digital thermometer sat at exactly 33.1F. Of the ~3" of wet snow that fell Thursday night, about 1 slushy, half-frozen inch remains, on top of the very dense, icy 2.5-3" of old snow on which it fell. A very light powdery snow started to fall this morning around 01Z and the sound of spinning tires is occasionally to be heard around the neighborhood. Temp 33. |

The ground is about half snow-covered: sunny half is bare, shaded half about 2" of snow - most of which I think is still from the Jan 30th-31st storm. In the 13 years I have lived here, usually by now the daffodils are about to bloom and chorus frogs have been heard for a week or two. Most of the daffodils are barely starting to come up. |

Most of the snow melted as it fell, and my 2.1" total may be an underestimate - I wasn't home for most of the afternoon, when it snowed quite heavily at times; it was snowing when I went to bed and the temp was 33 so some of what fell overnight probably melted too. This morning the temp was right on 32 and there was ice on my wooden deck and car, and on shaded portions of the nearest paved road. |

A brief light shower just made it over the mountains early this morning before dying more or less overhead. The past couple of days have looked and felt like spring, probably the warmest days since mid-December; if not, today will be. The first daffodils starting to bloom, 2-3 weeks later than usual. |

A perfect night for frogs last night: showers, some heavy, temp in the mid-50's, dewpoint in the lower 50's. Lots of chorus frogs, a spring peeper (which have really declined here in the past decade) and, oddly 1 American toad, usually out later than the other 2. |

Clusters of strong to severe thunderstorms hung off to our west for most of the evening before weakening and moving in as showers overnight. Not a lot of rain but it's the first amount greater than 0.04 that we've had since May 4th. Hoping for more in the next couple of days with moisture and weak fronts lounging around in the vicinity. |

Exactly the kind of localized heavy rain last night for which CoCoRaHS was designed: a slow-moving heavy shower whose core covered about 3 bright-red pixels on the radar and dropped 1.54" within about 50 minutes around midnight. The rain brought out a rarely seen amphibian here, a spadefoot toad (Scaphiopus holbrookii), which spends almost its whole life underground and pops up only occasionally on the wettest nights to breed. |

There was some very heavy rainfall very near by - from about 4:30 pm through about 9 pm there were very heavy thunderstorms moving very little, just to the east, then southeast, then south - and for awhile around 7 in literally every direction. Most of the rain here fell at a much more modest rate after 10 pm, when the convection weakened and spread out into a steadier rain, with occasional cloud-to-cloud lightning. |

Very heavy rain just east and south yesterday evening (street flooding in Winston-Salem). Large, severe and slow-moving thunderstorms back-building very slowly westwards came within a few miles to the east, then veered south - the third near-miss of heavy thunderstorms to the south and east in the past week. I don't have data to back this up but that seems like a common pattern in this county - maybe an urban heat island thing? Less frustrating than usual because still plenty of rain here lately. |

Lots of thunderstorm activity past 24 hours. The usual near-miss with a cluster of storms in the afternoon, from which we got about 0.15". Then starting around midnight another storm cluster strengthened after crossing the mountains to the northwest, dropped the rest of today's total and also hit us with the more or less annual very nearby lightning strike (simultaneous lightning and thunder) that takes out costly electronics (found so far: the TV, the wireless internet router, and some component of the pump & filtering system of our new in-ground pool). It's also traditional that this happens on a weekend, usually the July 4 weekend.
But it was a beautiful storm. No wind damage or hail. |

After 2.9" of rain June 13-15, only 0.33" in the 18 days since then, and lots of sunny 90 degree or higher days. More and more time and effort watering gardens, but having given up on the lawn, no more need for mowing. |

Sorry for the late report...for the second time in 5 weeks, my modem was taken out by a night-time lightning strike. But the rain was very welcome - a late-night cluster of thunderstorms taking an unusual NNE -> SSW path from VA to the NC western piedmont. |

A second straight day yesterday of widespread, precious rain. There must have been much heavier totals just north, south and east of here. Twice yesterday afternoon and evening, very heavy storms moving westward passed just north and south of here, then coalesced to the east. Continuous thunder just to the south and southeast for about half an hour around 6 pm. Funnel cloud reported the next county over to the southwest. Nothing severe here, not even much lightning. |

A remarkable shower last night (reported as Significant Weather), I think the only rain occurring in NC all night: a small cluster of showers (covering an area about the size of a county). The rain wasn't particularly heavy (this 1.36" fell in about an hour and a half) but the shower moved very slowly, west to east. A very welcome surprise given the current heat which is predicted to intensify this weekend. |

Spectacular lightning show last night from intense thunderstorms that hung nearly motionless just to the north and northeast. Definitely the most high-frequency lightning I have seen in my 13 years here, more than 1 flash per second for at least an hour. Very heavy rain narrowly missed this site. |

0.33" of rain since Aug 26th, nearly every day since then sunny with low humidity and highs near 90. US drought monitor has us officially in "abnormally dry" (D0) conditions. Lawns in the area are all brown/yellow and dormant, gardens are all needing frequent watering, but it's hard to tell whether there are any agricultural impacts yet; corn stalks here are dried out and yellow anyway at this time of year, but soybean fields nearby look fine to me. Most deciduous trees are dropping leaves, dried out green rather than fall colors, so maybe trees are cutting their losses and shutting down early. It's wonderful weather to be outdoors though. |

a few rainfall numbers from this past summer:
from May 15-June 15: 7.99"
June 16-July 8 0.33"
July 9-July 28 6.22"
and during the current dry spell
Aug 26-Sept 25 0.33"
We're now borderline D0-D1 drought conditions. More remarkable than the lack of rain, I think, has been the heat, *still* around 90F every day. This must be hottest Sept. on record here so far.
Too late in the growing season for me to be able to tell if there's much agricultural impact. Lawns gave up weeks ago. If you're a gardener you've had the choice of a whole lot of watering or giving up on the garden too for the year. I think overall the impacts are pretty mild here because we went into late August with plenty of soil moisture and good streamflow and reservoir levels.
Certainly one of the hottest summers here, if not the hottest ever. June was, incredibly, more than 6 degrees hotter than average, a huge deviation for a whole month and 2 degrees above the July average.
But next week looks cooler and very wet, which will be welcome. |

Showers with a few rumbles of thunder late yesterday evening, but the heavier ones missed here. Suddenly it's fall: yesterday was what looks like the last of our sunny, 90-degree calm days. Currently partly sunny with a fresh NE breeze and a whole lot more rain on the way over the next couple of days - enough to take us from drought to flooding if rainfall is at the upper end of the forecast range. |
