Old snow is approximately 1" snow over apprx 1" lumpy, solid ice. The ice has been growing steadily. So, for total melted core value I experimented (previous snows haven't had such a dramatic ice formation):
Got the snow with the outer gauge like usual. Then chipped ice within the outline of the gauge with a crescent wrench (subbing for a light hammer) and a good-sized screwdriver. Picked up big chips with fingers & scooped up rest with spoon. Worked pretty well, & about 3/4 of my melted value is from the ice! (I also measured nearby what I could get with the gauge alone= ~.2+".) But, this method wasn't extremely accurate as I didn't get all the ice. The resulting hole was somewhat concave, roughly the diameter of the outer gauge at widest, plus some small chips flew away & got lost on granular snowpack.
Fun - but don't try this if you're in a hurry! |
