10/1/2009 8:00 AM 0.12 M M M M Absent from my post yesterday, but upon returning I could see that it was an active weather day. The temperature topped out at 70 degrees and the moisture content (0.12) in the gauge was an impressive one-day total. As it so frequently does, the wind made it unpleasant with gusts in the 26-32 mph range. It's with us again this morning out of the west southwest at 8 mph. We fell to 29 degrees last night with a warning that tonight will be colder. Clear and crisp as we start the day.
10/2/2009 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Discussions around the water cooler today can only involve one subject--the cold. An overnight low of 18 degrees shattered the unofficial record of 23 degrees set on this date in 1965. It actually feels colder (7 degrees) this morning under a bright blue, cloud-free sky. There's a slight wind from the north at 8 mph and the temperature needs to climb nearly 50 degrees to reach the predicted high of 67. It did not warm up yesterday until late morning, eventually hitting a high of 57 degrees. There was a north, then southwest wind at 12-16 mph. This cold weather, which may moderate over the weekend, has brought out the fall colors--orange, red, yellow--everywhere.
10/3/2009 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Crystal clear and very dry (13 percent humidity) yesterday toward late afternoon, the first time in weeks that mountain haze has disappeared. A westerly wind at 18 mph with gusts to 25 helped push the pollution away. A large, controlled Carson Forest burn near Truchas Peaks and Penasco yesterday left a lot of smoke in the air to the south and southeast, and much of it is still there this morning. The temperature rose to 64 degrees yesterday, then fell to 28 last night, just missing the record low of 24 in 1982. There's a slight 5-mph breeze out of the north with bright sun as the day begins.
10/4/2009 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A bright, crisp morning with a nearly-full gold moon sitting on the horizon amidst a pink and blue haze. It was 36 degrees overnight with no wind at this reading, mountain smoke to the southeast from a controlled burn and some cirrostratus (H6) clouds hanging over Taos Mountain to the northeast. A high of 66 yesterday during a clear day with a north wind at 8 mph.
10/5/2009 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A windy morning with a strong breeze from the southwest at 11 mph. It makes the overnight low of 43 degrees seem much colder. Humidity is up at 71 percent and high, dark cirrus (H3) clouds are covering much of Taos Mountain. A mostly clear day yesterday with a few stratocumulus (L4) clouds. But again the wind out of the southwest was at 21 mph with gusts to 28. The high temperature was 67 at 3 p.m. This is my final report from this station, as I am moving to Georgia. Hopefully, I can report again from there.
