Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/1/2009 7:01 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 80 - 90% perhaps L5 cloud coverage. Brilliant blue to violet colors where the sun was lighting the clouds in the E.
10/2/2009 7:33 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M L6ish layer, trailing some likely rain, about 95% coverage, tho mtn WNW quite visible below the cloud layer. Nothing in gauge, but felt a few tiny drops, while riding up to gauge.
10/3/2009 7:29 AM T M M M M Thin layer of dust looked disburbed in bottom of gauge, and patterns of tiny rain spots in dust near gauge. Clouds L6 - L7, w/ scattered rain sheets visible toward northerly horizon. Mtn WNW obscured by clouds. Isolated frost on some surfaces up on the plateau, none on gauge.
10/4/2009 7:28 AM 0.64 M M M M During yesterdays 1st front (before noon), it was rain/slush/largish snow (up to 3" across, observed 7 mi W). That front left > 0.10" in the gauge in perhaps 90 minutes. The 2nd front is still delivering variable intensity (perhaps due to gusting) rain.
10/5/2009 7:17 AM 0.16 M M M M Clear skies, other than hazy horizons, which went from purplish to orange, to grayish, as the sun rose; mtn WNW features 60% visible. Very skinny freeze on least explsed puddles, atop the plateau.
10/6/2009 7:05 AM T M M M M Suspect the gauge had residual drops from yesterday, or condensation. Frost on some surfaces, including nearby, tho not gauge, or nearby puddle. Hazy horizons, somewhat violet. Some contrails, and indeterminate cloudish shape northerly.
10/7/2009 7:14 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A solitary contrail, hazy horizons, mtn WNW 90% obscured. Forgot to mention that we had a thin layer of dust on vehicles morning of 05Oct, from the dust storm in eastern Washington state (about 135 nautical air miles N) the previous day.
10/8/2009 7:19 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A couple of contrails, westerly ends shredded. Scattered, perhaps M* to H* clouds, some of which winds aloft appear to have pulled apart into a fish rib pattern. Hazy horizons, mtn WNW completely obscured.
10/9/2009 6:53 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Condensation on outside of big tube. Clouds mostly toward horizon, though may be building higher in southerly directions.
10/10/2009 7:39 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Dead insect in outer tube (thinner, shorter, and duller than one the other day, that had a front 1/3 that was a vivid green). Overcast, perhaps M1 clouds.
10/11/2009 7:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Only moisture in big tube, a small, frozen bird dropping. Clouds perhaps M5 to L5.
10/12/2009 7:17 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds look like 2 fairly layers, L5 looks likes winds E-W esterly (layer flatter bottom toward N horizon), but what can be seen of M5 looks N-S erly.
10/13/2009 7:05 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast, perhaps M2-ish (not quite enough light to be sure).
10/14/2009 7:06 AM 0.04 M M M M lt, var rain still in progress from variable L* to M* clouds. Thin layer of ice was still on tops of vehicles up on the plateau (HI did not reach freezing yesterday, which was quite a bit lower than forecast.weather.gov point forecast had est), but no ice noticeable at site.
10/15/2009 7:18 AM 0.21 M M M M Isolated sprinkles still in progress, from L5 - L7 looking clouds.
10/16/2009 7:17 AM T M M M M Condensation quite heavy on outside of big tube, as well as on other surfaces, including the ground. Variable fog layer, was < 150 ft visibility in places atop plateau, only isolated patches near the site; possibly only a couple hundred feet depth. Fog and higher level clouds both dissipating before the advancing sun.
10/18/2009 7:28 AM 0.01 M M M M barely noticeable lt drizzle still falling, in tiny patches. About 60% L* o'cast.
10/19/2009 7:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Trace condensation on outside of big tube. Clouds about 40% coverage L*, various incl some trailing minor rain streamers.
10/20/2009 7:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Substantially clear skies, thin L* or M* Westerly, appear denser lo on NE'sterly horizon. Mtn WNW visible, for the 1st time in several days.
10/21/2009 7:06 AM T M M M M Indeterminate amount, because quite a few modest drops on inside of big tube would not shake down, for measurement. Roads damp to wet. Isolated stretches of lt rain still in progress. Dark due to o'cast, tho as the sky lightened, the clouds appear patchy w/ a few rain streamers, perhaps modest L8. Modest gusts causing occasional singing by the power lines.
10/22/2009 7:07 AM 0.03 M M M M Clear skies (mtn WNW visible), exc some sort of clouds toward Easterly horizon, and some even further off toward NNE horizon. Roads were damp enough to glisten somewhat, but drying rapidly as the sun rises. Two-tone (pink above, blue below) Western horizon. Pockets of colder air below top of plateau.
10/23/2009 6:54 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds looked similar to yesterday, perhaps 90% coverage.
10/24/2009 7:16 AM 0.09 M M M M Isolated, very lt rain was still in progress. About 95% cloud coverage, roughly L6, with some very short rain streamers below.
10/25/2009 7:08 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly clear skies, Easterly a few isolated wisps of possibly L* clouds, some w/ tiny rain streamers below. Frost on some surfaces, tho not on the big tube.
10/26/2009 7:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds L5 or so, maybe 90% coverage (not enough light yet to see clearly). May have felt a couple of tiny, stray drops of wind-driven precip.
10/27/2009 7:13 AM 0.24 M M M M Thin layer of ice on many surfaces (tho precip in big tube was liquid). Icy roads in patches. Cloud coverage about 90% L7. Wind mild, especially compared to very erratic gusting yesterday from 08:30 to after 19;00.
10/28/2009 7:21 AM T M M M M Hoar frost inside and outside big tube, as on all other exposed surfaces. Clouds very thin, and few, elevation indeterminate -- resemble H1, but don't appear to be that high.
10/29/2009 7:15 AM 0.02 0.1 M M M Moderate snow in progress. Temperature right at freezing, about as much melting as accumulating.
10/30/2009 7:42 AM 0.10 M M M M Roads wet. Dark clouds low on Easterly horizons, a bit higher toward N and NW (obscuring mtn WNW). Otherwise, clear skies.
10/31/2009 7:26 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Any precip that might have fallen into big tube, likely blown away by strong, gusty winds (which on the ground seem to be coming from a more southerly direction than cloud motion from roughly SE). Clouds cover most of south-easterly half of sky, as well as north-westerly 1/3.
11/1/2009 7:35 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Thin frost most surfaces (less, to none on S verticals) melting quickly as sun rises. Mostly clear skies, clouds Easterly strongly bounded by air layers above and below.
11/2/2009 7:03 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Lt frost on many surfaces, tho not on the big tube (gauge). Clouds mostly sparse, two layers: a thin wispy layer below, and somewhat more substantial above. Clouds much darker northerly.
11/3/2009 7:05 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Meager frost on a few surfaces. Clouds resemble mostly M2, a few M4, about 80% coverage. Mtn WNW fully visible, w/ sunlight just working down from the top.
11/4/2009 7:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Temperature Lo was about 8degF below point forecast. Frost thin, but stiff on most surfaces (roads not particularly slick) beginning to melt as sunshine hits it. Clouds about 10%, perhaps M3.
11/5/2009 7:18 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Very lt frst on a few surfaces (eg ground, but not gauge). Appears to be more than one level (L to M) of clouds, exc in WSW quadrant. Hazy horizons, mtn WNW obscured.
11/6/2009 6:58 AM 0.13 M M M M About 20% coverage of L5'ish clouds boiling in from westerly, some had very fuzzy bottoms, but rain may not have been reaching ground, tho winds tapering off from fairly high speeds overnight.
11/7/2009 7:30 AM T M M M M Appeared to be enough drops in big tube to easily get to 0.01, but they stubbornly adhered to the sides ... Clouds L* toward horizons, darker westerly, possibly 5% coverage. Mtn WNW obscured.
11/8/2009 7:23 AM 0.02 M M M M Very thin, tho hard (large crystal patterns) frst most surfaces, melting as sun rises. Roads damp to minor patches of water. Clouds about 70%, mostly resemble L6.
11/9/2009 7:18 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Lt frst, mostly on the ground, and a few isolated patches on other surfaces (none on gauge). Clouds < 10%, may be M2 off in the West.
11/10/2009 7:22 AM 0.04 M M M M Almost more rain on outside of big tube, than inside. Roads wet, to stretches of shallow standing water. Clouds 10% mostly E to southerly, some trailing precip.
11/11/2009 7:14 AM T M M M M Very fine drops inside big tube, roads damp, lt intermittent rain in progress (stronger atop the plateau). Clouds 100% L6 (not much detail visible).
11/12/2009 7:14 AM 0.07 M M M M Freezing frost all exposed surfaces, highway slightly slick. Clouds vague gray, mostly M1 to some M2, perhaps 80% coverage.
11/13/2009 7:19 AM 0.01 M M M M Stiff frost, all exposed surfaces, highway somewhat slick. Clouds about 60%, M2. A fair amount of lt snow fell yesterday, but only minor accumulation on cooler surfaces, and no accumulation left this morning.
11/14/2009 7:22 AM 0.09 1.1 0.17 1.1 M Clear skies, tho hazy horizons, mtn WNW fairly visible. Roads somewhat slick, tho hwy crews have already sanded. Snow on the ground was disturbed by strong gusts yesterday afternoon. Depth varies, roughly 0.8 - 1.4". See also intense precip report, yesterday.
11/15/2009 7:16 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A lot of bare ground, where snow/ice is, it varies from 0.1 - 1`.0" (roughly) -- difficult to guesstimate an average depth. No frost. Clouds 95%, mostly resemble M2, tho could be lower. Aside: the keystroke response, in this box of the form, is very erratic this morning.
11/16/2009 7:19 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Clouds < 50%, most resemble L6. Wind whistling gustily through the power lines. A very few, isolated, small patches of snow remain on the ground.
11/17/2009 7:14 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds up to 90%, L6 to L7, some trailing precip streamers. Quite a lot warmer, and gusts have subsided -- likely between storms, tho wrh.noaa stations seem to have become inaccessible in this area before 20:00 yesterday.
11/18/2009 7:16 AM 0.07 M M M M Was spitting rain and snow late yesterday afternoon, but no snow accumulated. Lt frst this am, tho none on gauge. Clouds 80%, L6 to L7, trailing fuzzy precip streamers.
11/19/2009 7:14 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds perhaps 75%, L6 to hints of L7. The meager wisps of precip below are likely being dissipated by the gusty SEasterly winds.
11/20/2009 6:53 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds 80%, fairly fuzzy, perhaps L5. Could feel a few isolated, tiny drops on my face.
11/21/2009 7:21 AM 0.06 M M M M Very lt frst. Doubt any of it was remains of the few snowflakes that fell yesterday. Clouds 5 - 10%, bulk in W, mostly resemble M2, a few M4.
11/22/2009 7:16 AM 0.03 M M M M Stout winds may have taken back a fair amount of the precip from the big tube, given how much water is standing in spots on the hwy. Clouds 40 - 50% L6, blowing heartily before gusty (speed and dir, intensity peaked around 00:30, likely > 50 mph) Sou'Westerly winds.
11/23/2009 7:07 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds ~ 10%, mix perhaps L5 to M5 in long bands NW - SE'erly. Surface winds slight, compared to last couple of days.
11/24/2009 7:08 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds < 10%, mostly way off toward horizons, somewhat closer NE.
11/25/2009 7:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Slt frst (less up on plateau). Slt condensation both in- and outside big tube. Clouds < 10% mostly H1.
11/26/2009 7:13 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds 40 - 60% M1 (coverage appearance differs, as sun rises), very slight fuzz of precip tendrils below.
11/27/2009 7:19 AM 0.32 0.0 M M M Lt rain in progress, intermittently for about 17 hr. Clouds 100%, some bottoms were below 100ft AGL (none reaching ground, in immediate area), but seem to be lifting as the invisible source of brightness rises in the east.
11/28/2009 7:13 AM 0.12 M M M M Stiff frost, tho not as slick as ~ 20:30 yesterday. Few clouds, tho colorful toward NW.
11/29/2009 7:12 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Frost on many surfaces, tho not big tube. Clouds 5 - 10% H1 and contrails.
11/30/2009 7:17 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Lt frost on many surfaces, exc big tube. Clouds quite similar to yesterday, ~ 5 - 10% coverage, H1, tho did not notice any contrails.
12/1/2009 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Lt, var drizzle in progress. Clouds up to 100% L6 appearing, with some slight veiling at ground level that appears to be thickening on the plateau. May be the opposite of the other day, when I reported clouds lifting, only to have fog fall within 30 minutes and reduce visibility to < 100 ft for awhile ...
12/2/2009 7:27 AM 0.01 M M M M Thin, tho stiff frost, most exposed surfaces. There was a little ice in bottom of big tube, so the measured melt was not all from frost. Full moon nearing hazy horizon, skies otherwise clear, except for a solitary jet forming a contrail.
12/3/2009 7:19 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Frost on most exposed surfaces, a little less stiff than yesterday. Tho on both in- and outside of big tube, none near bottom of inside, so did not melt. Indeterminate clouds approach 100%.
12/4/2009 7:01 AM T T M M M The new snow could be mostly from frost falling off trees, however, some seemed a little too granular for that to be the source. Sky mostly clear, tho cloudy toward horizons.
12/5/2009 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Very thin frost some surfaces, incl outside big tube, scattered. Clouds < 40% ~ L5 w/ fuzzy bottoms, thin layer.
12/6/2009 7:28 AM 0.05 0.8 0.06 M M Winds erratically whistling through powerlines, but not only strong enough to caused the extensive (tho not particularly deep) drifting, because the snow is not particularly wet. Snow depth therefore very approx. Clouds 100%, flat uniform gray. This is the 2nd attempt to enter today's data. CoCoRAHS servers may be overloading...
12/7/2009 7:16 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds ~ 30%, mostly thin, M3-ish. Lo 0 .. 2 degF, 2 thermometers up on the plateau, which may be just below lowest from 1951 - 1960, but not as cold as ca 1949 - 1950.
12/8/2009 6:31 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A bit too dark to see cloud situation clearly, but likely less than 5%, very skimpy visible toward eastern horizon. May be 2 degF colder than yesterday -- likely misread one outdoor thermometer yesterday, so not clear how cold it got then. Local climate station did not report a minimum yesterday.
12/9/2009 7:10 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds might approach 10%, M3-ish and mostly thin. Temp + 2 .. 3 degF warmer than yesterday's lo, so maybe the HI will breach 20 ...
12/10/2009 7:23 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Lt, tho stiff frost, some surfaces. Variable snow remains on ground. Hazy horizons, some contrails, otherwise clear skies. May be 2 .. 3 degF warmer than yesterday. ... now we await whatever is able to break through from the Pacific.
12/11/2009 7:31 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Thin frost, nice crystals, some surfaces. Hazy horizons, some contrails, a few other indeterminate clouds in the distance. Temperature much less cold than yesterday, but doubtful that HI will reach freezing.
12/12/2009 7:37 AM T T M M M A dusting of snow, no frost. Clouds 40 .. 60% indistinct L'ish. Temp peeked above freezing yesterday, and only dn ~ 10 degF overnight.
12/13/2009 7:27 AM 0.09 0.4 0.07 M M Thin, frozen layer beneath snow, some surfaces. Clouds quite low, some veils of fog.
12/14/2009 7:14 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Light, sparse frost (none on gauge). Clouds roughly 30% L5'ish, furry bottoms. Snow depth variable from about 1" to bare ground.
12/15/2009 7:22 AM 0.39 M M M M Rain overnight, shows no signs of letting up. Tho air temp > frz, some ice beneath puddles, and scattered patches of snow remain on the ground.
12/16/2009 7:22 AM 0.42 M M M M Random drops occasionally still falling. Minor ground runoff. Clouds L7, > 70%.
12/17/2009 7:13 AM 0.05 M M M M Much more uneven (time and space) distribution of rain, than 2 days ago. Clouds ~ 90% (somewhat clear patches of sky visible near E and NE'sterly horizons).
12/18/2009 7:00 AM 0.10 M M M M Was freezing fog, visibility < 100 ft in places, and icy roads, but it was only about treetop deep, so the sun quickly burned it off (though some surfaces still slick after 08:00).
12/19/2009 7:18 AM 0.01 M M M M Clouds L6'ish roughly 95% coverage (or so it appears in the low light).
12/20/2009 7:22 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Minor condensation in- and out-side big tube. Fog bank extends from N end of plateau, well past the site, Vis_min < 200 ft along miles of hwy. Cloud cover otherwise may exceed 90%, lo light makes it difficult to tell.
12/21/2009 7:21 AM 0.01 M M M M Amount in big tube seems lo, compared to how wet hwy and gravel roads are. Rain is variable intensity, being driven before moderate gusts. Either it hasn't been in progress long, or it is missing the gauge. Clouds 95%+ (only a few light patches visible in E).
12/22/2009 7:16 AM 0.19 M M M M Took several minutes to melt the ice in the bottom of the big tube. Freeze hardened up the mud, too. Clouds 10-20% L2'ish. Yesterday was gusty, and there was a brief burst of 1/8" hail, 14:32 PST.
12/23/2009 7:21 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Fuzzy frost, many surfaces, incl partial on big tube. White (frost, no snow) highway, traction good. Nearly clear skies.
12/24/2009 7:27 AM T M M M M Thin, stiff frost nearly all exposed surfaces. Clouds toward N'therly horizon may be fog. Other clouds sparse H1, with a few contrails.
12/25/2009 7:29 AM T M M M M Hoar frost, most exposed surfaces, tho not clearly visible on highway (traction good). Freezing fog, mostly lite, tho visibility < 1/4 mi in places.
12/26/2009 7:18 AM T M M M M Frost filled in a little. Hwy only has patches of white where powerlines have shaken off a little -- traction good. FrzFog, Vis<1/2 mi typ, <1/4 mi in places.
12/27/2009 7:31 AM T M M M M Freezing fog still adding a little to frost accumulations. Hwy traction good, Vis<1/4mi
12/28/2009 7:19 AM 0.13 1.6 0.13 M M Lt snow may be winding down. Traction OK on hwy. Vis<1/2mi in places.
12/29/2009 7:26 AM T 0.1 T 1.4 0.10 Frz Fog Vis<200yd, less accumulated frost than typical for the number of days in the fog. Snow on the ground has settled slightly, and may have lost a little moisture.
12/30/2009 7:25 AM 0.09 1.4 0.14 2.3 0.33 Some variability in SWE. I've forgotten what the clear space overhead is called, after so many days of freezing fog. Clouds < 15%.
12/31/2009 6:58 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Snow depth about the same. Overcast.
1/1/2010 7:16 AM 0.33 M M 1.6 0.48 Just missed getting a great blue moon photo, where the clouds were giving it a ring, and a moon-burst (starburst) effect ... See extreme report from yesterday, for new snow. Shortly after that report, and on into much of the night, it rained. Less than 0.5" remains on the ground in most places. For core sample, I picked a spot that had been in the shade, and out of the wind, so accum H2O was still mostly in the sample.
1/2/2010 7:40 AM 0.03 M M M M Icy snow remains on the ground, in a few skimpy patches. Clouds >90%, L8.
1/3/2010 7:12 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Thin, soft frost, some surfaces (not big tube), incl Hwy (traction good). Clouds possibly L6, may be > 80%.
1/4/2010 7:29 AM T M M M M Very thin ice deposited on many surfaces, tho hwy traction not noticeably impaired (sand/gravel likely remains atop the asphalt). FrzFog vis<100 yd going to site, but on return trip it was dissipating quickly atop the plateau. Thankfully, the freezing rain forecast may not occur.
1/5/2010 7:09 AM 0.02 M M M M Var rain still in progress. Surprisingly little in big tube (seemed to be more on outside, than in, tho did not notice winds overnight). Puddle across the hwy is quite a bit larger than yesterday (runoff may contribute to it). Ground getting quite saturated near the surface, likely runoff if precip continues until forecast cold in two days.
1/6/2010 7:12 AM 0.47 0.5 M M M Snow after rain, seems to have insulated the ground a bit, since some of it is still mushy under the snow. Clouds 90+% still spitting icy stuff. Took awhile to get contents of big tube melted. As to vehicle, hard to clean off windshield, and doors were frozen shut, but traction is only awful in some places.
1/7/2010 7:26 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Has stayed cold enough that the ground is all hard. Snow cover has been a bit disturbed by winds. Clouds flat gray overcast.
1/8/2010 7:26 AM T M M M M Furry and Hoary frost on many surfaces (incl inside big tube). Freezing fog, Vis<200yd atop plateau, <1/2mi at site. Hwy traction decent.
1/9/2010 7:35 AM 0.08 M M M M Freezing rain up to at least 21:00 yesterday, atop plateau. Difficult to chip ice off windshield. Road conditions quite slick, despite hwy having been sanded. Patchy freezing fog. Typical vis < 1 mi, < 1/4 mi in places.
1/10/2010 7:36 AM T M M M M Freezing fog, min.Vis.<100yd . Thin, but mostly hard (a bit furrier on big tube) frost, exposed surfaces. Tree branches have more accumulation than yesterday. Hwy has some very slick spots.
1/11/2010 7:13 AM T M M M M Fog lifted. Above freezing, ice melting off trees. Hwy traction good, tho sidewalks slick in places. Clouds 95%, mostly L5'ish.
1/12/2010 7:22 AM 0.02 M M M M lt, var rain was in progress until at least 07:35. Clouds ~ 95%, L5'ish. 2nd day above freezing. Ground quite soggy in many places, and minor runoff. A very few, small patches of snow remain on the ground.
1/13/2010 7:14 AM T M M M M Clouds 80%+, mostly L6, tho some L2'ish ESE.
1/14/2010 7:12 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Lt frost some surfaces, incl hwy, but not big tube -- firmed up ground. Clouds ~ 80%, L5'ish.
1/15/2010 6:51 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds 95%, indiscernible type in low lite.
1/16/2010 7:15 AM 0.04 M M M M Possibly more rain drops on outside of big tube, than managed to land inside (expected more like 0.10, given the standing patches of water on the hwy 100 yd E), tho gusts at ground level had died down by about 19:00. 95% clouds, L6'ish. Also a completely separate, white fog bank starting about 1 mi N of site.
1/17/2010 7:08 AM 0.11 M M M M lt, var rain still in progress. Clouds indeterminate, in low lite.
1/18/2010 7:25 AM 0.13 M M M M Clouds < 10%, isolated aloft, darker near E and SE horizons.
1/19/2010 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds perhaps 60%, somewhat L5, mostly in long rows, with furry bottoms. One northerly contrail in a big arc.
1/20/2010 7:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Briefly sounded like rain, last nite. Ground very stiff, and skim of ice on puddles, yet air temp several degF > frzg. Clouds < 5%, dark patch toward NNE, fuzzy bottomed.
1/21/2010 7:08 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 90% L5 - L7, droopy, fuzzy bottoms (not quite mammatus) on many clouds.
1/22/2010 7:00 AM T M M M M Somewhat soft frost. Clouds ~ 90%, mix of L*, darker and precip descenders, southerly.
1/23/2010 7:08 AM T T M M M A very few, thin patches of snow on the ground. Clouds ~ 90%, possibly L5.
1/24/2010 7:13 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Frost thin and fairly soft, tho visible in more places in yesterday, none on big tube. Clouds 60%+, appear to be fairly thin.
1/25/2010 7:15 AM 0.55 1.4 0.33 1.7 M Very sloppy snow fell yesterday, from before noon. Snow clinging to the bottom third of the satellite dish knocked out signal. Depth on the ground varied 1.4 - 2.0". Took new sample where it was easiest to do. Suspect the SWE in the core sample is low, because the snow feels much loss soggy now. Clouds 85%+, L5 - L7.
1/26/2010 7:20 AM 0.17 0.8 0.11 1.1 M Spitting snow still in progress. Fog minVis<100yd. Road conditions quite sloppy. Much of the snow melted yesterday -- on slopes, runoff was visible below the snow surface -- so did not bother trying to get SWE for total snow.
1/27/2010 7:20 AM 0.08 M M M M Very thin frost, some surfaces, most other surfaces damp. Fog mostly above ~ 2700 ft, minVis<1/4 mi atop plateau. Snow did fall much of yesterday, but most has already melted. Isolated patches of snow remain on the ground, and on roofs.
1/28/2010 7:18 AM T M M M M Thin, but very stiff frost, most surfaces, incl big tube. Roads slick enough to slide. Isolated patches of snow remain. Clouds 30%+, leading edge uplift (?) resembles strands of cotton candy.
1/29/2010 6:50 AM 0.02 M M M M Fog minVis<150ft, tho better in places (and improved as the sun rose). Thin, damp frost on a few surfaces.
1/30/2010 7:24 AM 0.34 0.2 0.14 M M Sleet began before 23:00. Much of it already melted atop plateau, though the measured "new snow" (just shy of 0.25") is typical of what remains at site. Hwy slushy, quite near frz pt, but traction decent. Fog minVis<100yd, a bit less atop plateau.
1/31/2010 7:36 AM 0.02 M M M M Puddles in places on the roads suggest scattered rainfall, supported by the scattered rain sheaths still visible in a few places. Ground may be saturated in places. A very few patches of snow remain, where it slid off of vehicles or roofs.
2/1/2010 7:16 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Thin frost, many surfaces (not on big tube). Clouds <5%. Only tiny patches of snow remain on the ground, in places where neither sun or wind reach them.
2/2/2010 7:23 AM 0.03 M M M M Quite a few droplets of condensation, perhaps another 0.01 on surfaces of big tube. Frost thin but stiff on some surfaces, yet immediately adjacent surfaces in same plane wet. Patchy fog a little below site elevation. Clouds aloft >20%, perhaps L5.
2/3/2010 7:20 AM 0.17 1.2 0.15 1.2 M Very wet snow, slush challenges traction, and easy to slide on corners. Fog minVis<200yd.
2/4/2010 7:20 AM 0.19 T M M M Skimpy patches of sleet remain on the ground. Frost somewhat thick on a few surfaces (not big tube). Precip in big tube was nearly all melted. Temp near freezing, but traction decent on roads. Fog minVis<100yd, but already thinning atop the plateau, as sun must be rising.
2/5/2010 7:08 AM 0.17 M M M M lt, var rain still in progress. Fog minVis<1/2mi atop plateau, thins to barely visible below.
2/6/2010 7:14 AM 0.02 M M M M Dense, uniform fog minVis<100yd.
2/7/2010 7:26 AM 0.08 M M M M >99% overcast, cloud type indeterminate.
2/8/2010 7:11 AM T M M M M Thin frost, some surfaces (not big tube). Patchy fog, minVis<1/2mi, mostly atop plateau. Clouds 90%+, L5.
2/9/2010 7:23 AM T M M M M Fog minVis<200ft.
2/10/2010 7:17 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Frost somewhat stiff, all exposed surfaces. Clouds <15%. Unfamiliar bright light source, rising in the E.
2/11/2010 7:18 AM 0.04 M M M M Lt, var rain in progress. 95%+ overcast. Bright source in the E, that was sighted yesterday, is not visible today.
2/12/2010 6:55 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Slight condensation on some surfaces (not big tube). 75%+ mixed clouds, mostly L5.
2/13/2010 7:11 AM T M M M M Lt var drizzle in progress. Clouds overcast 95%+. Forgot to mention, as of a couple of days ago, some insects on the ground (ants or ant lions ?) beginning to behave as if spring is here.
2/14/2010 7:10 AM 0.01 M M M M Lt, var rain in progress. 100% overcast.
2/15/2010 7:12 AM 0.11 M M M M Frost stiff, long wavy sheets on relatively flat surfaces, atop plateau. Less on ground at site. Hwy slightly slick in places. No frost, lots of drops on big tube. 10%+ patchy clouds. Fog S of plateau, at lower elevation.
2/16/2010 7:16 AM 0.05 M M M M Clouds 80%+, L7, some rain streamers trailing.
2/17/2010 7:24 AM T M M M M Quite a lot on outside, very little inside of big tube. Clouds 20%+ L5, bunched toward N, scattered elsewhere.
2/18/2010 7:19 AM 0.01 M M M M Quite patchy Fog minVis<200yd, less dense at lower elev., nearly freezing.
2/19/2010 7:12 AM T M M M M Soft frost, nearly all exposed surfaces. We may have been spared the "Dense Fog Outlook" (or perhaps it is waiting to descend) -- 90%+ overcast.
2/20/2010 7:16 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Frost about as soft as yesterday (despite 5 degF colder), though thinner and not as uniform. Clouds < 5%.
2/21/2010 7:13 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Frost thin and fairly soft, some fairly large crystal patterns in places. Skies clear, exc slightly hazy horizons.
2/22/2010 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Frost quite thin yet stiff, interesting large crystals. Skies clear exc slightly hazy horizons. Nearly identical to yesterday, exc slightly colder.
2/23/2010 7:11 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Slight frost in the grass, none visible elsewhere. Clouds wind-smeared, 15%+ cover.
2/24/2010 7:13 AM 0.15 M M M M A few tiny drops still falling. 75%+ L5 looking clouds. Some snow on ridge to S.
2/25/2010 7:14 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Soft frost, some surfaces (incl some in grass, but none on big tube) nearly melted. Clouds L5, 75%+, w/ some slightly droopy bottoms. Only patches of snow still visible on ridge to S.
2/26/2010 6:55 AM 0.01 M M M M Erratic, lite rain still in progress. Hwy (less th1n 100 yd from gauge) wetter than the gauge captured, tho also erratic wetness. Clouds >95% with some rain tendrils visible.
2/27/2010 7:08 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Suspect there was a trace, but moderately strong gusty winds last night took the moisture out of the big tube. Slight frost on a few surfaces, incl grass, but not big tube. Clouds < 10% mostly concentrated toward NEasterly horizon.
2/28/2010 7:48 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Slight frost already nearly melted by Sun. Clouds 70%+ resemble M5.
3/1/2010 7:09 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Slight frost, some surfaces (not on big tube). Clouds possibly 50%, very thin, possibly H1, herringbone visible in front of Sun. Contrails most visible in E.
3/2/2010 7:16 AM T M M M M Trace of precip, and tiny bugs in big tube. Clouds 60%+, more (and trailing precip) in E than W, L5.
3/3/2010 7:15 AM 0.07 M M M M Very damp fog, minVis<100yd. Gives the sun quite a large apparent diameter, where visible.
3/4/2010 7:11 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Thin soft frost (only condensate on big tube), cracked on some surfaces. Clouds 90%+ resemble L4. Clouds yesterday afternoon developed fair loft, given that id did not get very warm.
3/5/2010 7:18 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Thin frost, many surfaces, but not on big tube. Clouds >10%, scattered clumps of mixed types, quite a few contrails. Clouds yesterday afternoon appeared a little denser than the previous day, but less loft.
3/6/2010 7:19 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Thin frost, quite a few surfaces, exc condensation on outside big tube. Clouds ~ 40%, H1. Lots of contrails, going every which-way.
3/7/2010 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Soft frost, most surfaces (already melted on outside of big tube), where cracked, due to sloughing while melting. Clouds <5%, perhaps L1.
3/8/2010 7:12 AM T T M M M Very slight dusting of snow visible on some surfaces (incl inside big tube). Ground temp > frzg. Clouds 80%+, L6 appearing, w/ a few patches of darker clouds below deck.
3/9/2010 7:10 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Lt frost on many surfaces (not big tube). Lt snow just beginning, from clouds approaching from SW-erly. Atop plateau, early precip looked like hail, but was small enough that it fell slowly. Precip moving to larger flakes, but still small. Clouds 70%+, L7-ish, some portions descend to ground. Cannot see the tops, but there is minor loft, toward the sides.
3/10/2010 7:21 AM T T M M M Mostly dust visible in gauge, but trace of snow was still on the ground. Clouds >15%, long rows Southerly, mixed elsewhere.
3/11/2010 7:11 AM T M M M M Clouds >25%, mostly resemble M9. More substantial clouds yesterday afternoon, w/ fair loft, given the temperature.
3/12/2010 6:50 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds 20%+, chaotic mix, many smeared by the gusty winds. Fairly warm, in the few places out of the wind.
3/13/2010 7:23 AM 0.25 M M M M Frost not particularly hard, many surfaces (already melted on big tube). Clouds < 10%. Wind modest to calm, especially compared to the last 2 days.
3/14/2010 7:24 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Thin frost, most surfaces. Nearly clear skies, a few ghostly contrails, hazy toward horizon and hazy shapes N'erly. Snow still visible on ridge to S.
3/15/2010 7:11 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Slight frost on stiff ground, none visible elsewhere. Clouds <5%, toward horizons.
3/16/2010 7:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Trace of frost in grass. Ground much softer than yesterday. Clouds mixed levels. At lower, some fuzzy bottoms, some fairly long precip streamers.
3/17/2010 7:07 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Soft frost, many surfaces (not on big tube). Ground stiff. Clouds < 5%, resemble a muted pastel.
3/18/2010 7:21 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Stiff frost, most surfaces. Ground hard (temp went well below forecast low). Clear skies, exc somewhat hazy horizons.
3/19/2010 7:13 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Barely visible frost on stiff ground. Clear skies, exc hazy horizons.
3/20/2010 7:26 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Slight frost on the cold hard ground, and possibly glints of dew in the grass. Clouds and contrails faint, H1 possibly.
3/21/2010 7:12 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No frost, ground softening. Clouds 80%+, mixed levels, mostly fairly thin, M9 perhaps closest.
3/22/2010 7:12 AM T M M M M Soft frost, some surfaces (not big tube). Clouds >75%, L7, with some trailing long precip streamers. Intermittent lt rains yesterday, atop the plateau, and a quick storm blew through ~ 17:15 (sans thunder that was earlier observed upwind).
3/23/2010 7:23 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Thin, somewhat stiff frost, most surfaces (exc big tube). Ground hard. Clear skies, exc faint contrails, and somewhat hazy horizons. There was a slight bit of precip (incl a couple of tiny, stray snowflakes) up on the plateau yesterday afternoon.
3/24/2010 7:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Slight frost in grass. Skies clear, exc faint M1 or H1 overcast.
3/25/2010 7:17 AM 0.02 M M M M Var rain in progress. Clouds 90%+, L7 in the few places where details can be seen.
3/26/2010 6:59 AM 0.01 M M M M Possibly the stiff winds yesterday took back some of the moisture. This am, clouds 90%+ looked mostly fuzzy overcast, exc/ descending precip curtains making for an interesting sunrise. Then, very tiny sleet was barely visible before the wind. Size of flakes got somewhat larger, up to the time of reporting, but snow/sleet seems to be tapering off now.
3/27/2010 7:08 AM 0.01 M M M M Soft frost, esp in grass, wavy on some hard surfaces. Skies would be clear, exe a couple smeared contrails, and hazy below ~ 30degEl.
3/28/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds 90%+, varying from relatively faint in the W, to some Mammatus toward NE. Wind has calmed substantially, since ~ 01:30.
3/29/2010 7:13 AM 0.34 M M M M Variable rain in progress, being driven before very erratic (intensity, and somewhat direction) gusts approaching 45mph. Tumbleweeds bounding down the hwy (mistook one for a small dog, as a dog had crossed hwy moments before). Clouds slightly chaotic, most closely resemble L6.
3/30/2010 7:11 AM 0.18 0.4 M M M Ice on one edge of top of funnel was not measured. Snow in the form of hard ice crystals, too tricky to scrape off of flat surface for melting and measurement, too scattered in grass to get a SWE measurement there. Clouds 90%+ most resemble L6, with some L7, and other odds and ends.
3/31/2010 7:22 AM 0.04 M M M M Thin, hard frost, most surfaces. H2O frozen in measuring tube (trickier to melt, onSite, than in big tube). Clouds 20%+ mostly thin, some look combed, some like M4, ... Yesterday afternoon saw intermittent and few small snowflakes. Apparently not enough heat difference to generate the forecast thunderstorms.
4/1/2010 7:27 AM 0.08 0.2 M 0.1 M Had to melt contents of funnel and inner tube. "Snow" very non-uniform distrib. Measured on flat surface 0.2" hail layer (only got smallish sleet up on plateau, yesterday pm) + 0.2" vertical frost (something frightened it ? ... nothing to do with April Fools). Average depth in vicinity of gauge closer to 0.1". Clouds <5% mostly toward Easterly horizons. Very flat tops on ones toward SE.
4/2/2010 7:13 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Precipitation of indeterminate form is making a meager effort to fall, in the face of scattering (tumbleweeds caught in the open appear to be scrambling for shelter) winds trying to gustily live up to forecast (up to 50 mph, already up to 32 atop the plateau). Overcast 95%+ (no discernible breaks, and also no bright spot, where the sun ought to be rising).
4/3/2010 7:10 AM 0.01 T M M M Minor frost (some interesting crystals) in a very few places, incl in the grass. Clouds <10%, mostly toward horizons, flattish tops. Yesterday, a very brief fall of small (< bb) hail about 07:00. Gusty winds ruled, but there was a brief pause around 10:30 when largish (>0.5") flakes of snow were accumulating at the surface. However, < 10 minutes later there was no sign that it had snowed.
4/4/2010 7:14 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Traces of frost in grass. Clouds 40%+, resemble M9 sans "chaotic"; mostly muted, pastel shades of gray (no hint of Easter colors), w/ a few darker patches toward E, and some trailing faint, short curtains.
4/5/2010 7:18 AM 0.06 1.3 0.09 1.3 M Funnel likely allowed snow to blow away, since the big tube was coated along S side -- hence SWE is probably closer to actual precip. Clouds 10%+, mostly toward horizons.
4/6/2010 7:09 AM 0.01 M M M M Slight frost, very few surfaces. Clouds 15%+, L7 and other types, possibly flattish tops. Hail yesterday atop plateau, ~ 1/8", two spates of about 2 min ea, late afternoon, melted quickly after ground contact. Mostly notable for how slowly it descended.
4/7/2010 7:18 AM 0.03 M M M M Clouds 25%+, M9-ish, some quite thin. Atop the plateau, yesterday had intermittent, brief periods of snow -- mostly blown before the wind, only a few flakes even reached the ground.
4/8/2010 7:07 AM 0.05 M M M M Light snow trying to be in progress. Being thwarted from settling to the ground by same blustery gusts (peak 45 mph, thus far) that are singing down the W-E lines, and blowing tumbleweeds about. Clouds >70%, L7 -- quite cohesive, given ground conditions.
4/9/2010 6:57 AM 0.02 T M T M Sorry this is so late. Clouds 20%+, most resembled M9, when ice in gauge was melted. Trace snow was what remained of erratic bursts (including tiny hail, and driving snow briefly near 1"/hr, in two instances) yesterday from about 07:45 to around 18:00.
4/10/2010 7:10 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Lite frost in grass, and a few other surfaces near the ground; none on big tube. Clouds 90%+, mostly quite thin, perhaps H1, quite a few contrails NE'sterly.
4/11/2010 7:19 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hwy, 100yd E was damp, yet dry 200 yd SE. Bird hit the funnel dead center, despite remnant of last hears reflective tape, and toothpicks -- waiting for warmer weather, to apply a new set. Clouds H5.
4/12/2010 7:20 AM 0.02 M M M M Lt, var rain in progress, more so atop plateau. Clouds 95%+ (no breaks seen), mostly L6 appearance.
4/13/2010 7:09 AM T M M M M Nearly 0.01. Some surfaces atop plateau quite wet (very heavy dew?). Clouds 90%+, most resemble L8, sections lowering (in the heavy, not severe weather sense) seem to be diminishing as the sun rises.
4/14/2010 7:10 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Slight frost, some surfaces. Clouds scattered, some H1, some lower-level mostly toward Easterly horizons, but also a few toward West. Yesterday afternoon, into evening clouds were lofting, accompanied by fairly strong, erratic gusting.
4/15/2010 7:12 AM 0.07 M M M M Significant water on outside of big tube. Skies clearing as largest concentration of heavy clouds moves off to NE. Some thinner L* clouds toward W may be dissipating.
4/16/2010 7:19 AM 0.01 M M M M Dew on many surfaces (incl big tube) at site, less so atop plateau. Cloud cover mostly thin, resembles M1, though lower clouds toward E trailing precip fringes.
4/17/2010 7:28 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Slight dew, some surfaces (not big tube). Overcast fuzzy, most resembles H6, but appears canted downward toward NW.
4/18/2010 7:14 AM 0.07 M M M M Heavy dew, many surfaces. Thin overcast, H5. T'storm late yesterday afternoon was mild, and cleared by evening.
4/19/2010 7:24 AM T M M M M Some dew, most surfaces (incl big tube and funnel). Overcast H1.
4/20/2010 7:17 AM 0.02 M M M M Lt, var rain in progress. Clouds resemble L6 more than L7, heaviest ones appear to be moving from ridge SSE toward NNW.
4/21/2010 7:18 AM 0.59 M M M M Outside of big tube very wet, and one small bird dropping in funnel. Clouds 95%+, L6, very fuzzy bottoms, some possibly below a couple of hundred feet AGL. Temperature still slipping.
4/22/2010 7:15 AM 0.01 M M M M Slight dirt suspended in moisture in inner tube. Small spots of mud on big tube, tho none in funnel -- bird strike of a swallow sort ? Clouds 50%+, resemble M3.
4/23/2010 6:58 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Lt frost, some surfaces (not big tube). Hard ground. Clouds 90%+, thin H1.
4/24/2010 7:23 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Some surfaces a few raindrops, atop the plateau. Clouds 85%+ L7, very droopy bottoms, some almost in curtains as if made of cotton candy. Hoping it warms enough soon, to get the anti-bird tape to adhere. One was sitting atop the gauge, this morning (despite the remains of last years tape and toothpicks).
4/25/2010 7:17 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Lt frost in the grass and on a few other surfaces, rapidly melting as sun climbs. Clouds H5, dense enough to obscure westerly mtns.
4/26/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 95%+ overcast, H1 likeliest, yet resemble M2.
4/27/2010 7:10 AM 0.18 M M M M Var, lt to moderate rain in progress. Clouds 95%+, L6'ish.
4/28/2010 7:18 AM 0.08 M M M M Lt frost, some surfaces (not tube) melting rapidly as sun rises. Scattered clouds, mostly H1 or H2.
4/29/2010 7:13 AM 0.02 M M M M Lt frost, rapidly melting. Clouds toward horizons resemble L5. Yesterday afternoon clouds lofted slightly, but fell short of forecast thunderstorms. Tiny hail did fall briefly, several times.
4/30/2010 7:12 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Lt frost some surfaces (not tube), rapidly melting in sun. Mostly clear skies. Clear view of two mtns, westerly. Some clouds on horizon, mostly easterly.
5/1/2010 7:23 AM 0.02 M M M M A few stray drops still falling. Bulk of clouds has been driven past, easterly, L8'ish.
5/2/2010 7:32 AM 0.02 M M M M Clouds M9.
5/3/2010 7:08 AM 0.03 M M M M Var rain in progress. Given how wet outside of big tube and nearby roads were, suspect the strong horizontal gusts caused a significant amount of rain to miss the funnel. Dark skies southerly, w/ a rainbow briefly rising SSW.
5/4/2010 6:59 AM T T M M M Scattered snow on a few surfaces. Skies mostly clear, scattered clouds toward northerly and SE'erly horizons.
5/5/2010 7:12 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Slight frost, some surfaces (not big tube). Clouds M9, with some short precip trailing in places. Yesterday afternoon, wispy something between fluffy clouds and ground. One shovel-like cloud about 25 mi NW, across the John Day R.
5/6/2010 7:16 AM 0.02 T M M M Traces of icy aggregates of snow remain in only a few places -- varied from tiny to moderate flakes, of very short durations, several times yesterday. Lt frost, some surfaces, melting rapidly as sun rises. A few clouds on most horizons, few visible westerly, and unobstructed view of 2 mtns.
5/7/2010 6:57 AM T M M M M Lt frost some surfaces. Clouds M9, saggy bottoms southerly.
5/8/2010 7:28 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds 75%+, L5.
5/9/2010 7:10 AM 0.02 M M M M Mostly clear skies, clouds developing below 20 elev, southerly. Yesterday, clouds lofted early; settled down before afternoon. Put hail pad out this morning. Perhaps it will show something other than oxidation (foil blackened) and bird droppings this year.
5/10/2010 7:12 AM 0.60 M M M M Var, to moderate intensity rain in progress. Minor runoff. Clouds 99%+.
5/11/2010 7:13 AM 0.09 M M M M Ground still quite wet, to muddy. No further runoff evident. Clouds 40+%, M9.
5/12/2010 7:07 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, exc hazy horizons.
5/13/2010 7:13 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Dew in grass (as there was yesterday, but forgot to mention). Clear skies, other than one contrail forming, and somewhat hazy horizons (2 mtns westerly more visible than yesterday).
5/14/2010 7:12 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Trace dew in the grass. Clouds 30%+, roughly M3. Hazy horizons, visibility somewhat impaired for 2 mtn westerly.
5/15/2010 7:11 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A few flecks of dew in the grass. Mostly clear skies, a few contrails and wispy H*. Hazy horizons, mtns westerly: 1 completely obscured, the other hazily visible.
5/16/2010 7:17 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds 95%+, L6, easterly have droopy bottoms.
5/17/2010 7:18 AM T M M M M Above site, atop plateau, lt var rain still in progress. Clouds 95+%, L6, trailing thin precip streamers from overhead on easterly. Skies lightening toward western horizon.
5/18/2010 7:08 AM 0.68 M M M M More than half the rain blasted down very quickly (see Signif Weather report) yesterday afternoon, the rest fairly steadily overnight. Big tube quite wet on the outside. Clouds 95%+, L6.
5/19/2010 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Dew, most surfaces. Clouds 25%+, L5.
5/20/2010 7:07 AM 0.27 M M M M 0.10+ of total fell in about 10 minutes yesterday ~ 16:35 -- lower intensity than afternoon 17May, but yesterday's front went on to a tornado near MosesLake, WA. Thin frost some surfaces (not big tube), already melting. Clouds 15%+ L5.
5/21/2010 6:51 AM T M M M M 0.01 in tube, but turbid and bird dropping nearly blocking base of funnel (despite anti-bird measures on outside of funnel). Variable, lt rain in progress, more toward top of plateau. Clouds 95%+ L6, though clear spots near northwesterly horizons (1 mtn clearly visible WNW).
5/22/2010 7:18 AM 0.08 M M M M Snow visible on ridge to S. 2 mtns visible below clouds, NW and westerly. Clouds 75%+, most resemble L8. Hail yesterday was miniscule, and short duration, though it did fall several times.
5/23/2010 7:11 AM 0.01 M M M M Thin frost melting, a few surfaces. Clouds mostly sparse H1, quite a few smeared contrails. Some lower level clouds toward horizons.
5/24/2010 7:12 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Thin frost some surfaces (not big tube), already melting as sun rises. Mostly clear skies, somewhat H5, slightly obscuring 2 mtns westerly. Tanglefoot tape lasted less than a week on one side of mounting plate, but still OK on other side -- the missing side did flash toward highway (a couple of 100 yds away), so might have been cut off by someone.
5/25/2010 7:20 AM T M M M M Some surfaces atop plateau showing raindrops. Clouds 90%+, resemble L8, some w/ rain curtains about 1/2-way to ground. Just noticed hail paid had a bunch of tiny pits from one of the storms last week.
5/26/2010 7:05 AM 0.05 M M M M Scattered, tiny precip still in progress. Clouds 95%+, mostly L6, tending toward L5 in sections. No mtns visible, westerly.
5/27/2010 7:19 AM 0.14 M M M M Stretches of narrow puddles on hwy. Clouds 80%+, L8 perhaps, w/ mist appearing to rise to meet clouds, atop plateau.
5/28/2010 7:23 AM 0.01 M M M M Varying, miniscule rain still falling atop plateau. Clouds 80%+, L6 to L8. Feels more like an early winter day.
5/29/2010 7:21 AM 0.03 M M M M Clouds 70%+ L-mixed. Wind gusts whistling through both E-W and N-S powerlines.
5/30/2010 7:28 AM T M M M M Varying, intermittent to lt rain in progress. Clouds 80%+, most resemble L6.
5/31/2010 7:19 AM 0.13 M M M M Outside of big tube is quite wet, but wind was fairly mild overnight. Var precip in progress, from more a drizzle near site, to fairly steady atop plateau. Clouds 90%+, L6 to L8 in appearance.
6/1/2010 7:18 AM 0.10 M M M M Grass still quite wet. Clouds mostly toward horizons, resemble L8.
6/2/2010 7:10 AM 0.14 M M M M Var, lite to moderate rain in progress (since around 22:20). Clouds 99%+, L6.
6/3/2010 7:23 AM 0.24 M M M M Ground getting very muddy (saturated?) in places. Clouds 20%+, closest resemblance is M9, yet the bulk are likely L*. 2 mtns visible westerly.
6/4/2010 6:55 AM 0.43 M M M M Ground getting a bit saturated, mild runoff in places. Clouds 20%+, mostly toward horizons, resemble L8.
6/5/2010 7:05 AM 0.04 M M M M Heavy moisture in grass. Gravel road surface mostly dried out. Bird trying to examine flash tape from atop gauge funnel (despite toothpick parapet). Clouds skimpy, most resemble H1. Parts of 3 mtns mostly visible west to northerly.
6/6/2010 7:25 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A trace or more fell atop the plateau, in places. Clouds 95%+, resemble L6.
6/7/2010 7:13 AM 0.05 M M M M Highway wetter in spots, up on plateau. Clouds 20%+ L4 or L8 appearing.
6/8/2010 7:19 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Dew in the tall grass. Mostly clear skies, tending toward H1. 3 mtns visible westerly, slight haze obscuring.
6/9/2010 7:13 AM 0.27 M M M M Although it rained off/on all night, the heaviest part may have come from the clouds moving off NE. Quite dark, and some loft, but flattened tops. Another batch of clouds moving roughly this way, from SW.
6/10/2010 7:10 AM 0.02 M M M M Clouds 80%+, most resembles M9, though some lower. Yesterday afternoon the clouds were trying to loft, but their mood turned black (double rainbow against one such backdrop), and they settled for a very brief bout of thunder.
6/11/2010 7:15 AM T M M M M Dew in the tall grass. Mostly clear skies, clouds L* toward E and SE horizons. 3 mtns clearly visible westerly.
6/12/2010 7:19 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Fairly heavy dew in tall and short grass. Clear skies, exc hazy horizons, and some lo clouds toward easterly horizon.
6/13/2010 7:01 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Dev in the grasses. Clear skies, other than a few wisps and a broken contrail, northerly. Somewhat hazy horizons, 3 mtns westerly visible.
6/14/2010 7:17 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Dew in the grasses. Fairly clear skies, hazy horizons (only 1 mtn clearly visible, westerly), Some H* clouds and a few contrails smearing.
6/15/2010 7:06 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Slight dew in grass. Clouds <5%, L*. Gusts whistling along W-E powerlines.
6/16/2010 7:12 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly clear skies, L* clouds blowing up from southerly. Gusts whistling through W-E powerlines, again today.
6/17/2010 7:12 AM 0.02 M M M M Grass wet. Clouds were 75%+ (now more like 65%+), some low, most resemble M9.
6/18/2010 6:53 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds were 60%+, L1, but are sparser now.
6/19/2010 7:02 AM 0.34 M M M M Clouds 95%+, L7'ish, with some parts more organized.
6/20/2010 7:26 AM T M M M M Clouds 90%+, closest resemblance L5, smoother bottoms Easterly, bumpier moving in from West.
6/21/2010 7:06 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly clear, scattered clouds aloft H1'ish, denser near horizons.
6/22/2010 7:11 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Dew in the tall grass. Clear skies, other than slight horizon haze (3 mtn good visibility westerly), a very few cloud tufts aloft.
6/23/2010 7:14 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds 85%+, upper layer resembles M5, lower clusters darker, trailing precip in places, and building slight loft.
6/24/2010 7:13 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, other than minor haze -- 3 mtns fairly visible westerly. There was substantially more haze yesterday afternoon, especially toward the Columbia River -- made it difficult to see whether the clouds were topping out (only a few looked like they might punch through).
6/25/2010 7:10 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds 80%+, resemble L5, precip descenders less than halfway to ground, even above ridge W.
6/26/2010 7:03 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, other than hazy horizon (2 mtn clearly visible westerly) and scatter clouds mostly northerly.
6/27/2010 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Nearly utterly clear skies, slightly hazy near horizons, 3 mtns quite visible westerly.
6/28/2010 7:16 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A few glints of dew in the tall grass, but no visible drops. Utterly clear skies (2 days in a row) other than some haze on horizons -- 1 of 3 mtns westerly somewhat obscured.
6/29/2010 7:06 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds 20%+, easterly hemisphere, possibly M5, or lower.
6/30/2010 7:21 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly clear, a few cirrus aloft, H5'ish toward horizons. Much less interesting than yesterday afternoon -- clouds were in N-S rows, being blown E (it appeared), but E edges looked combed up.
7/1/2010 7:11 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds 10%+, most closely resemble H5. Winds aloft still combing the edges in interesting patterns -- though nowhere near as visually stunning as the northern lights + volcano photos posted at Telegraph.co.uk .
7/2/2010 6:50 AM 0.06 M M M M Clouds 90%+, spotty, var rain in progress.
7/3/2010 7:44 AM 0.01 M M M M Rain was quite spotty. Gravel road had minor standing water, 1/4 mi W. Yesterday, around 45 mi SE (18SSE Heppner) it rained quite a bit up i the low mtns. Clouds here now 80%+, L8'ish.
7/4/2010 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly clear, H5'ish, fairly hazy horizons (3 mtns westerly mostly visible only in outline).
7/5/2010 7:31 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Skies clear, other than a few stray cirrus, contrails, and somewhat hazy horizones (3 mtn west visibility about 2.5). Good thing the brush is still fairly green, or winds gusting to near 30 during fireworks might have caused a mess. Winds this morning have died down to a low whistle (much quieter than the screaming fireworks that the mfgr describes as "singing").
7/6/2010 7:06 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, 3 mtn westerly visibility 2.6, some haze toward easterly horizons.
7/7/2010 7:14 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies -- 3 mtn westerly visibility 2.6 .
7/8/2010 7:13 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, exc haze on horizons -- 3 mtn westerly visibility only ~ 1.4
7/9/2010 7:17 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly clears skies, a few wispy H*, and contrails. Horizons hazy, 3 mtn westerly visibility 0.4.
7/10/2010 7:17 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds 80%+, L4'ish, rain tendrils about 1/4 to ground, in places -- felt a couple of tiny, stray drops riding out to gauge. 3 mtn westerly visibility ~ 0.4. Wind teasing the powerlines, enough to rattle something, but not enough to make the lines hum or sing.
7/11/2010 7:21 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, exc hazy horizons -- 3 mtn westerly visibility 1.4. Fire Weather Watch may apply more to the dried out hillsides, than the flats (where most plants still are substantially green, and only cheat grass is completely dry).
7/12/2010 7:13 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, other than a thin bit of clouds northerly, and slightly hazy horizons (3 mtn westerly visibility 2.4). Winds are up, but so far neither the NWS blowing dust, or Red Flag fire watches have come to pass...
7/13/2010 7:22 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, other than a hint of clouds way off toward ENE'rly horizon, and slightly hazy horizons (3 mtn westerly visibility 2.3). Unseasonably chilly, this am. This immediate area dodged both blowing dust and fire advisories yesterday. However, there was a bit of blowing dust one county west, and to the N and NW of here 3 smallish fires near the Columbia River.
7/14/2010 7:16 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, other than moderately hazy horizons (3 mtn westerly visibility 1.3).
7/15/2010 7:21 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, exc moderately hazy horizons (3mtnWvis 2.2).
7/16/2010 6:44 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, exc slight hazy horizons (3mtnWvis 2.6). Hopefully NWS Fire Weather Watch will amount to nothing.

7/18/2010 7:17 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, exc hazy horizons (3mtnWvis 1.9). Wind whistling through o'head power lines w/ some gust-o.
7/19/2010 7:19 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, exc noticeably hazy horizons (3mtnWvis 1.3). Wind continues to be brisk, but less gusty than yesterday.
7/20/2010 7:13 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, exc hazy horizons (3mtnWvis 0.5).
7/21/2010 7:10 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly clear skies, M3, or M9 5%+ easterly hemisphere, some quite fuzzy bottoms. Horizons smokey/hazy (3mtnWvis 0.4) due to recent 20k Acre fire N of Columbia R.
7/22/2010 8:32 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, other than a few scattered H* clouds, and hazy horizons (3mtnWvis 0.3). Southerly winds have at least blown a lot of the smoke back north. Yesterday afternoon, saw a fat (50 ft wide, or so) dust devil, multiple vortices that stayed grouped for several minutes.
7/23/2010 7:28 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, exc variably hazy horizons (3mtnWvis 2.4).
7/24/2010 7:04 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, exc some residual smoke N from nearby range fire, and variable hazy horizons (3mtnWvis 2.2).
7/25/2010 7:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, exc hazy horizons (3mtnWvis 0.8).
7/26/2010 7:27 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, exc stray groups of clouds easterly, possibly H2 to M*. Hazy horizons (3mtnWvis 2.2).
7/27/2010 7:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds 85%+, some L2 W over Zero Butte, the rest L4'ish, with rain curtains descending to E. Half-hearted (half-circle, perhaps 1 mi across, that soon smeared) circulation over N side of plateau.
7/28/2010 7:21 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Rain yesterday morning was in somewhat widely spaced curtains, fairly heavy up on ZeroButte (5.5W) during thunderstorm. At least several dozen ground strikes (often paired, and the majority may have hit around ZeroButte), but did not observe any smoke in the immediate area. Smoke in the air this morning (3mtnWvis 0.1). Clouds (and smoke?) L6 toward S, A few H9 NE, and possibly L2 forming in the W.
7/29/2010 5:10 AM 0.02 M M M M Clouds 5%, scattered L1.
7/30/2010 1:33 PM 0.00 0.0 M M M
7/31/2010 7:11 AM T M M M M Small (appeared less than 6 miles wide) T'storm front just passing, only eastern edge brushed past site. Cloud to ground lightning struck mostly to the N. As with prior T'storm (27Jul), a noticeable part of bolts seemed paired and fairly parallel. Some of clouds rolling up from S look like the hair of troll dolls -- loft higher than cloud width, but neither substantial. Smoke seems less noticeable here (Clarno fire), but the fresh smell of rain could be misleading me.
8/1/2010 7:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, other than haze that likely includes residual smoke (3mtnWvis 0.1).
8/2/2010 7:11 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly clear skies, but some M3-like, and smokey/hazy horizons (3mtnWvis 0.1).
8/3/2010 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, other than smoke/haze on horizons (3mtnWvis 0.3). Whatever allergens were accompanying the smoke in the air yesterday, seem to have moved on. Gusts are brisk enough to occasionally excite the overhead powerlines into a low whistle.
8/4/2010 7:22 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, exc hazy horizons (3mtnWvis 0.1) including more smoke, again -- barely any breeze, to scatter it. At least the smoke doesn't seem quite as irritating as it did 2 days ago.
8/5/2010 7:25 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, exc horizons. Possibly a little less smoke in the air, but 3mtnWvis 0.1. See also Drought Impact Report.
8/6/2010 7:25 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clears skies, exc smoke/haze toward horizons (3mtnWvis 0.1). Winds have picked up a little, but more might help move the smoke on.
8/7/2010 7:19 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, other than smoke/haze on horizons (3mtnWvis 0.3). Much less smoke than the middle of yesterday, when it was maybe half as bad as pictures of Moscow show. Still enough something (partially harvest dust) in the air that the sensitive are teary-eyed and sneezing. Filing a drought impact report the other day was a little misleading -- animals are hurting for sources of surface water, but many tumbleweeds-in-waiting are still green.
8/8/2010 7:17 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds 10%+ L5-ish, sw'erly hemi-sky. Harvest dust and forest smoke seem to have subsided (3mtnWvis 1.7).
8/9/2010 7:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds 20%+, may have begun as L5, but the wind has combed them fairly fiercely in places. Way off on the eastern horizon, T'clouds may be in early stages of forming. Horizons reasonably clear (3mtnWvis 2.1).
8/10/2010 7:19 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, exc slight clouds SE'erly, and somewhat hazy horizons (3mtnWvis 1.9).
8/11/2010 7:26 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Swith of rain came up less than 100 ft short of the gauge. That swath of rain may also have missed the climate gauge, as the road was only wet into the N'ern part of town. Clouds 20%+, E'rly only, L8 w/ some rain curtains still reaching ground. Lightning began around 23:30 (saw one flash way off, possibly SE), and later heard distant thunder a couple of times.
8/12/2010 7:13 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Skies clear, exc hazy horizons (3mtnWvis 1.4). Back to summer, after 2 days of hi in mid 70s.

8/18/2010 6:44 AM 0.01 M M M M Rain was in very brief bursts, accompanying several gust fronts last night. Clouds 20%+, L5'ish, hazy horizons (3mtnWvis 0.4).
8/19/2010 7:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, other than hazy and smoky horizons (3mtnWvis 0.5). Fire yesterday appeared to be a bit west of Hwy97, near Wasco. Smoke then was topping out at about 2,500 ft, but has since gone higher, and spread further (had then only reached to about 7 mi NW of gauge).
8/20/2010 7:17 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, exc a few faint H1, and resembles H5 due to smoky horizons (smell still strong, but visibility + -- 3mtnWvis 2.2).
8/21/2010 7:12 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds more easterly, L9'ish. Smoke densest toward SW (3mtnWvis 0.5). Forgot to mention yesterday (unless I did remember, and have forgotten that), some of the lighter (yet large) tumbleweeds have detached from the ground. Pricklier ones are still largely green and attached, tho some of them are drying out.
8/22/2010 7:16 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds sparse H1, some resembled jellyfish earlier, mostly blown past toward E, where they look more like M*. Smoke smell worse, visible in all directions, but more evident at lower elevations and looking toward sun (3mtnWvis 0.4).
8/23/2010 7:02 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies. Stiff breezes yesterday cleared smoke out, so merely hazy horizons (3mtnWvis 2.4). It was surprisingly chilly yesterday afternoon, with L2 and L4 clouds driven by the gusty breezes. There was dew on vehicle windshields this morning.
8/24/2010 7:18 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, horizons a bit hazy (3mtnWvis 2.4).

8/26/2010 7:23 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, exc hazy horizons smoky to a fair el.angle (3mtnWvis 0.0) -- Smoke yesterday afternoon (from somewhere westerly) stayed well above the ground, enough that by 18:00 nearly resembled a pre-sunset.
8/27/2010 6:49 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies, other than stray H1, and hazy horizons (3mtnWvis 1.3). Smoke barely noticeable today -- yesterday smoke was blown strongly down to ground level by mid-morning, but had been blown away by early-afternoon.
8/28/2010 7:09 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Overcast 95%+, slightly fuzzy cloud bottoms westerly. May be some smoke near the northerly horizons, from a fire across the Columbia R (3mtnWvis 0.5).

9/8/2010 7:20 AM 0.08 M M M M Around 05:00 there was a fog atop the plateau. By 07:05 it seemed to have cleared, except for isolated patches just below top of plateau (and above site) -- 3mtnWvis 1.1, at that time. When the sun rose above the clouds in the E (by 07:30), fog blossomed for miles, minVis < 0.5 mi. By 08:00 fog atop plateau seems to be thinning again.

9/17/2010 7:25 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A few stray drops fell yesterday afternoon, atop the plateau (barely noticeable, esp compared to the erratically distributed rain of the preceding afternoon - evening). Clouds 20%+ M9, horizons fairly obscured E'erly and more so W'erly (3mtnWvis 0.1).
9/18/2010 7:15 AM 0.51 M M M M Most of the rain fell in a brief burst (likely exceeding 2"/hr), accompanied by lightning, with hail (pea-size, soft to hard) mixed in at times after peak precip. Wind gust peaked ~ 25 mph. Radar showed ~ 10 mile long (NW-SE) high intensity band, but fairly narrow (E-W). This morning, some of the cloud bottoms toward horizons are not much above 3,000 ft. Clouds 75%+ L7 to M9. 3mtnWvis 0.0 .
9/19/2010 7:16 AM 0.62 M M M M Moderate, var rain still in progress. Humidity quite noticeable (sultry cloudiness) all day yesterday, rising above 90% by late afternoon, 96%+ since 21:00. Visibiity < 1.0 mi. Runoff increasing -- Post Office (poor drainage) was flooded yesterday, and likely will be worse today. 2-day precip approachs 2x the long-term total for mo of Sep -- already wettest since 1986.
9/20/2010 7:10 AM 0.51 M M M M Brief thunder and heavier rain, yesterday mid-afternoon, otherwise intermittent rain. Clouds 10%+, ~ L8, mostly toward horizons (3mtnWvis 0.0). Some runoff when rain intensity is up (minor debris reported on two highways), but otherwise the soil seems to be mostly still taking precip in.
9/21/2010 7:18 AM 0.01 M M M M Clouds 70%+, scant (at least visible) H1 and smeared contrails over heavier L5.
9/22/2010 7:19 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds 80%+, L5. 3mtnWvis 0.0. Ground remains wet, possibly contributing to barely visible hint of fog (unless it is smoke from fireplaces...).

9/24/2010 6:53 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M There was very brief rain atop the plateau yesterday, but it did not register at the C7527 gauge (not sure about climate station, which has not updated online yet). Some grasses damp now. Clouds 40%+ M3. 3mtnWvis 1.3.
9/25/2010 7:33 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Dew moderately heavy. Clear skies, other than one stray contrail (cloud ?) and somewhat hazy horizons -- 3 mtnWvis 2.1.
9/26/2010 7:26 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds 85%+, some L5 - L6 below another layer (M or possibly H elev.). Some rain visible N and maybe W of ZeroButte. 3mtnWvis 0.0.
9/27/2010 7:13 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clouds 15%+, H1. Dew slightly less than yesterday. 3mtnWvis 2.1. Dead insect (moth ?) in outer funnel, and spider at bottom of inner funnel -- unceremoniously removed both.
9/28/2010 7:23 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Dew less than yesterday. Clear skies, other than horizon haze, and possibly low, distant clouds -- 3mtnWvis 2.1. Spider at bottom of big tube took more persuasion (firm heel strike to bottom of tube) to dislodge this morning.
9/29/2010 7:28 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Dew about the same as yesterday. Clear skies, exc haze on horizons -- 3mtnWvis 2.2. Earwig in big tube, but no sign of spider.
