Grass is growing on the range, about 3 weeks early. I kicked ice out of the dogs' water basin only 3-4 times this winter. The "wild potatoes" are in bloom. The maple's buds are swelling and the forsythia is showing yellow, though the buds haven't opened. And I'm in spring-cleaning fever. |

No fog this a.m. Clouds are breaking. Wild potatoes are blooming on the range (good snack, carrot-like flavor). Crocuses and mini-iris are in full bloom, and the daffodils are starting to swell. More red-wing blackbirds arrived. Bull frogs are starting to chorus. Haven't seen the bald eagles in the pine for days, so the steelhead run is probably passed. |

Thunder cells, but the rain was moderate intensity. Lightning fire in valley to the west, the smoke is drifting into our valley. |

Animals are getting restless; ~80 elk passed through the hay field. Another herd is decimating a neighbor's alfalfa crop. Coyote pups are out on their own now and hunting in close. Season is changing. |

"silent" light show, frequent lightning sheets, and the frontal wind was strong.
Weird bird year here: none of the normal summer ducks (mergansers, mallards, etc.), really miss them playing on the river out front; the one pair of Canadian geese should be out with their young, but no sign of any, but coyotes may account for that. I heard the 'yotes yip their chorus from the area of the nest and some goose-type squawking a few weeks ago. Now the grapes over my patio are ripe and there aren't the usual masses of birds harvesting them before I can. I like my grapes, but I like the birds more. |
