12/19/2009 7:00 AM 1.39 M M 4.5 M My family was in Blacksburg for my daughter's graduation at Virginia Tech on Saturday when the storm began at 1:30 and one inch fell in less than 30 minutes...we then left immediately to go home in our Honda Civic Hybrid, a drive that normally takes three hours stretched to eleven hours. It took four hours to drive down the mountains the short distance of 40 miles to Roanoke. Tractor trailors jack-knifing and cars everywhere in ditches and overturned. No bare road anywhere. Traveled east on 460 to Pamplin VA taking another 4 hours. Ran into white-out conditions briefly as we turned south on 47 for the final leg of our journey to our home taking the next three hours. We were able to follow tracks laid in the snow by another vehicle Made it to our home at 11:30 PM much to the delight of our three dogs that had hunkered down in a shed for the day. The snow was now mixing with sleet ticking on the windows. We had packed our wood stove when we left that morning at 6:00AM and had a generous bank of coals to revive into a new fire. We sure were glad to be home.

Temperature increased to 32.4 and changed to rain for the rest of the evening unitl around 1:00 am. Summary: One inch of snow then sleet compacting to slightly over 1 inch by the 7:00am reading. However rain guage read 1.56 of melted water. Ground is wet in places with standing water but on "snow" covered areas it has an icy crust. 7:00 am temp 30 with light "dry" snow crystals falling steadily. Wind out of the N 5mph.

2/10/2010 7:00 AM 0.48 0.9 M M M Yesterday at my location no precipitation until late in the day...the sun even poked out for awhile around 10:am.. then fell as rain around 3:00pm with temperature in mid thirties. Snow fell sometime after midnight. Put wood in our stove around 3:00 and temperature was 31. When the front came through around 5:00am winds picked up strongly and temperature dropped to 21 in less than one hour and at 19 when the rain guage was retrived...a very long cold walk to get it! Winds around 17mph NNW but gusting higher. Lots of snow devils streaming across the pastures. I do have two guages that I can swap out on days like this so I only have to make the trip once.

My cabin sits in a low spot with land that gently slopes to several farm ponds east of west of the site. Frost in shaded areas to the west of the cabin. Will know if there is damage later this afternoon when I return from work. I have corn that is over one foot tall, many tomato plants and other tender veggies and flowers I set out much earlier this year than usual.

The rest came later in the evening during the second warning around 11:15PM and lasted only 20-25 minutes but with heavier downpour as it rolled over top of my area.

There was already 0.02 in the guage from an earlier shower when only light green radar passed over this area during the day time. What is going on with the radar?...it doesn't seem to be a very accurate predictor of what will precipitate out.
