Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/22/2009 8:00 AM 1.14 M M M M This is on top of 2.53" received earlier this month. After a fairly dry summer, the autumn rainfall is making the fall harvest by regional farmers a major challenge!
11/26/2009 8:00 AM 0.57 M M M M First significant precipitation in over a month!
12/9/2009 8:00 AM 0.70 14.0 0.70 14.0 M This is the third measurable snowfall in west-central WI, and -- by far -- the most significant. NNE winds @ 20-30 mph generated many magnificent drifts. Winds generally swung to NW and increased to gusts of over 40 mph. Meteorologists report that the barometric pressure was lower than the pressure during the hurricane-like storm in 1975 which sank the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior.
4/30/2010 8:00 AM 0.34 M M M M Vigorous thunderstorm moved through after 2200 CDT. A lot of lightning with a modest amount of precip. Rain was falling at 0500, but not sure how long that event was. We'll take the 1/3 inch and hope for more!
5/1/2010 8:00 AM 0.75 M M M M "Frisky" thunderstorms occurred between noon and 1400, when over .5" rain fell. No hail observed.
5/4/2010 8:00 AM 0.10 M M M M Mostly cloudy day with late afternoon & evening showers in advance of a high pressure system. Overnight low a bracing 33.0 degrees.
5/5/2010 8:00 AM 0.17 M M M M Large system of wet weather moves across state, but lower Chippewa River Valley gets less than 1/4 inch. Major wind pushes clouds -- and weather.
5/8/2010 8:00 AM 0.67 T M M M This is a two-day total. Estimated that .10 (+/-) fell overnight thursday. Friday saw continuous rain, which switched over to snow about 1700 in the Chippewa Valley. Overnight low was 33 degrees. Tonight forecast to be sub-freezing.
5/9/2010 8:00 AM T T M M M Strong NW winds and intermittent showers/sleet hardly wet the bottom of the Taylor; however, the overnight temps sure got our attention! 24 degrees. Yowza! In fact, it was 28 degrees at midnight. Sure glad we covered all the emerging perennials. We'll wait another week or so before planting tomatoes.
5/10/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Cool, cloudy conditions, but no precip.
5/11/2010 8:00 AM 0.25 M M M M Overnight showers bring much-needed moisture to Chippewa Valley's emerging spring vegetation.
5/12/2010 8:00 AM 0.12 M M M M Cool & cloudy with intermittent showers. This weather system has been hanging around for nearly a week, but we're not complaining. We still haven't caught up with the YTD moisture (but we're slowly gaining!).
5/13/2010 8:00 AM 0.48 M M M M Again, [mostly] overnight rain brings another half an inch. [Well, almost!]. Chilly, cloudy with occasional showers; then a real downpour occurs in the middle of the night. The sound awakens us, we smile, roll over, and resume our dreams of wandering thru meadows...
5/14/2010 8:00 AM 0.08 M M M M Finally, a new weather regime has taken over, with strong NW winds and "splash & dash" showers. Feels almost like an Alberta Clipper. Warm, sunny weather on our doorstep. Let the real Spring weather commence!
5/15/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Strong NW winds yesterday followed by clear and calm conditions overnight. Low was 36 degrees.
5/24/2010 8:00 AM T 0.0 M M M Major heat and dew point [72!]. Storms develop, many severe, and then they glide right around Eau Claire. Very, VERY frustrating!

6/1/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M "Chamber of Commerce" weather for the Memorial Day Holiday. May precipitation total = 2.74"
6/2/2010 8:00 AM 0.33 M M M M After a sustained dry spell, we finally got a lovely early summer shower, accompanied by interesting lightning & thunder on the leading edge.
6/3/2010 8:00 AM 0.39 M M M M Nice overnight rain! We're still in a deficit of nearly 4" for the year, however.
6/4/2010 8:00 AM 0.54 M M M M Wonderful overnight/early morning rainfall. The Chippewa Valley has picked up nearly an inch and a quarter this week (thus far).
6/5/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Coolish overnight with gathering clouds. Rain predicted today might wash out the Navy's Blue Angels' Air Show today.
6/6/2010 8:00 AM 0.24 M M M M Yesterday's rain, a slow-moving drizzly event, cast a little pall over the first USN Blue Angels' performance, but the show must go on!
6/7/2010 8:00 AM 0.13 M M M M "Splash & dash" showers ["Hit & Miss" better name?] threatened second Blue Angels' show, but the performed with their customary professional panache.
6/9/2010 8:00 AM 1.08 M M M M This is a two-day total, but the bulk of the precipitation occurred yesterday, the 8th. Strong flow of moisture-laden air directly from the south.
6/12/2010 8:00 AM 1.24 M M M M This is another two-day total (sorry!). The skies opened up shortly before 0800 Friday and dumped a wad of rain on the Taylor. Interestingly, the EAU airport recorded only about an inch, while the NBC affiliate -- just 2.8 miles to our north -- recorded about .8". We have received over 3" so far in June after being over 4" in arrears!
6/14/2010 8:00 AM M M M M M
6/15/2010 8:00 AM 0.61 M M M M Steady rain began shortly after 0800 and lasted well into the evening.
6/16/2010 8:00 AM 0.09 M M M M Light showers moved through overnight.
6/17/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
6/18/2010 8:00 AM 0.26 M M M M Major light & sound show after sunset. Earlier in the day, strong southerly winds raked the Chippewa Valley. Dew points high early (60s) but subsided as heat of the day asserted itself.

6/26/2010 8:00 AM 0.22 M M M M Nearly tropical dew points result in major thunderstorms to the west of the Chippewa Valley.
6/27/2010 8:00 AM 0.57 M M M M Another night of "Shock and Awe" as a towering thunderstorm lumbers through the Chippewa Valley. Once again, we received reports of heavy rainfall in other locales, we're content with our little half inch!

7/2/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A string of lovely days with bright sun and comfortable dew points. June precipitation total = 5.98".
7/3/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Heat and humidity on tap. Gotta find a pool to cool off in!
7/4/2010 8:00 AM T M M M M Early showers delivered just a trace of moisture with more promised later in the day (by weather maps).
7/5/2010 8:00 AM 0.41 M M M M At 2300 [local], after Eau Claire's excellent fireworks, it was 75 degrees, 100% relative humidity, and a dew point of 73 degrees, with pockets of thick fog. Pretty close to tropical in the Chippewa Valley!
7/6/2010 8:00 AM 0.10 M M M M Overnight showers leave a tenth of an inch of moisture behind; meanwhile, muggy weather (dew points above 70) continues its own reign.
7/7/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yet another day (and night) of moist air.
7/8/2010 8:00 AM T M M M M Well, "T" is a bit of a stretch, if one calls barely moist pavement a "trace." *Huge* frontal line forms in south-central MN and draws a bead on the Chippewa Valley, only the "Eau Claire Effect" grabs it at the county line and shreds it, sending the bulk of the moisture to Chippewa Falls and points north, east and south. This is a common theme for this part of WI. In two years of observing, we've seen this phenomenon occur with disgusting regularity.
7/9/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Residual humidity from the recent muggy weather hangs around, but dew points nose down slowly into more comfortable levels. Magnificent sunset!
7/11/2010 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Large cumulonimbus cloud starts up NW of Eau Claire (St. Croix River valley?) and lumbers SE across WI toward Milwaukee [I just happened to be driving a charter bus and was dogged by the growing cell, which finally caught up with me in MKE]. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the cell nicks our rain gauge and -- thanks to the Eau Claire Effect -- spits slightly more than a trace.
7/12/2010 8:00 AM 0.75 M M M M One out of two for the day. A noon-time squall line nicks the Chippewa Valley and barely wets pavement [Eau Claire Effect rules]. The second line was a different story. It raked the eastern metro area of MSP and points north (severe thunderstorm warnings posted for Barron Co.), then tracks SE and hits the Chippewa Valley (and, yes, Eau Claire!) broadside with lightning, strong winds and torrential rain. Three-quarters of an inch fell in about 45 minutes. Nice storm!

7/14/2010 5:00 PM 0.70 M M M M Dew points reached 76 degrees at 1600 (CDT). Storms all over western WI raising havoc with straight-line winds, gully-washing rainfall and the odd funnel cloud. Dew point at 1745 at 70 degrees and falling.
7/15/2010 8:00 AM 1.46 M M M M This total includes the .70" from yesterday afternoon's storm. With a maximum dew point of 78 degrees, yesterday was as close to unbearably humid as we've had this year in the Chippewa Valley. Add to that severe storms, observed funnel clouds and torrential rains, it made for exciting weather-watching. Two evening storm cells crossed the St. Croix River and put on a spectacular light show, especially in their wake. Magnificent cloud-to-cloud lightning was nothing short of magnificent!
7/16/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Very nice day with low humidity and NW winds, actually felt chilly in the afternoon. Delicious!
7/17/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Fairly warm day with rising humidity. Not much wind.
7/18/2010 8:00 AM 0.62 M M M M Lightning put on a superlative display throughout the night, starting with the first "real" cell that plowed through the Chippewa Valley about 2100 (an earlier cell fell prey to the "Eau Claire Effect", and veered off to the SE just west of the county line). Cloud-to-ground strikes were awe-inspiring. At about 0400, a tight, menacing cell rambled through with continuous cloud-to-cloud lightning strikes resembling a giant faulty fluorescent light bulb. The bulk of the rain was delivered by this cell.
7/19/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A lovely, if humid, summer's day.
7/20/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Lovely midsummer day!
7/21/2010 8:00 AM T M M M M Another "Chamber of Commerce" day; however, evening showers move through. Once again, the "Eau Claire Effect" keeps most of the moisture toward the north, while a few drops of moisture make their way into the Taylor.
7/23/2010 8:00 AM M M M M M This is a two-day total. Heavy rain fell from before 0500 until after 1000, and then intermittently throughout the rest of the day. Ponding and full ditches prevail (even in spite of the alluvial sands of Eau Claire County). Major rainfall pounds much of southeastern Wisconsin, with twisters in the Madison area and upwards of 7" reported in Milwaukee. Wet conditions, indeed!(Original amount of 1.84" changed to Multi-day accumulation for 7/22-7/23.)
7/24/2010 8:00 AM 1.00 M M M M Awakened at 0300 by frequent cloud-to-ground lightning strikes and massive claps of thunder, followed by pounding rain. Sweet music to lull us back to sleep!
7/25/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Pop-up showers roam throughout the region, but the "ECE" keeps them at bay [much to the relief of Country Fest organizers and attendees]. Cool enough to turn off A/C and let in fresh air overnight.
7/26/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
7/27/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Rain from advancing warm front began to fall shortly after the 0800 check of the rain gauge. .31" inch fell in about 45 minutes. Then the heat and humidity roared in with a vengeance. Heat up to 89 degrees, dew point at 84 (according to Weather Bug). Finally, we watched development of a frontal squall line that we like to label "Slobber-knockers," since this might be a family show! The front arrived at almost precisely 2200 and lasted quite a while. Rainfall total in tomorrow's report.
7/28/2010 8:00 AM 1.43 M M M M Yessiree! The hits just keep on coming. Last night's frontal blast caused a fair amount of mayhem throughout the Chippewa Valley and beyond. Fortunately, the Chippewa Valley (especially the southeast side) escaped with minor damage overall; however Barron [NW of Eau Claire] and Iron County [NNE of EAU] were visited by EF-1 funnels and/or straight winds that caused major consternation. We are now officially approaching eight inches in July, just shy of a one hundred year record of (I believe) 8.83". Farmers are crying "Uncle!!"
7/29/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M After yesterday's extreme heat & humidity, it's glorious to turn off A/C, open windows and let the house fill with real Wisconsin air (even if it's tainted with the aroma of livestock byproducts!
7/30/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M
7/31/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Leaving this a.m. for a 9-day bus run to Livingston MT (I'm the driver!) and Yellowstone Park. Will report contents of Taylor on return.
8/9/2010 8:00 AM 1.97 M M M M This is a nine-day accumulation collected in my absence. According to Eau Claire Leader Telegram records, rain came in two waves, with approximately .2" falling before 1800 on Monday, 2 August and the balance [approximately 1.77"] falling on Saturday night, 7 August. According to the same paper's reports, we have moved from a nearly 4" moisture deficit in mid-May, to nearly 1.0" *OVER* average annual precipitation as of 10 August. No wonder the yard looked like a jungle on my return!
8/10/2010 8:00 AM T M M M M Late night shower barely wets bottom of the rain gauge.
8/11/2010 8:00 AM 0.99 M M M M After fits and starts all day, huge storm blows through Chippewa Valley at about 0130. Lots of wind, rain and *very* energetic lightning [intended!]. Flash flood warnings prevail in many parts of WI. We have received reports that Menomonie -- 30 miles to the west -- received over five inches of rain from the same storm. Major flooding.
8/12/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Heat regime in full "bloom."
8/13/2010 8:00 AM 1.10 M M M M Awakened at 0530 by major light, sound and rain event. If lightning is a major source of nitrogen, we've gotten at least two tons/acre!!
8/14/2010 8:00 AM 0.18 M M M M Friday the 13th was meteorologically significant in the upper midwest. Awakened at 0530 by a wild thunderstorm [rainfall from that storm recorded yesterday]. High dew points persist throughout day; then, in evening, squall line forms and kicks off new round of storms. The "Eau Claire Effect" splits the line and we get under .2"; however, communities to our north and south get clobbered by more torrential rains. Even with the ECE, we are now nearly 2.5 inches above "average" for the year [after being some 4.0" in arrears in mid-April!].
8/15/2010 8:00 AM 0.04 M M M M A few drops in advance of promised free Canadian air-conditioning. Bring it on, baby!
8/16/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Beautiful morning with temperatures in the low 50s. Chamber of Commerce weather!
8/17/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another fabulous morning! 52 degrees F overnight. Delicious!
8/18/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another coolish night with "free" air conditioning. However, all good things must come to an end, and so it is with cool dry weather. Heat and elevated dew points poised to invade the Chippewa Valley. GAH!
8/19/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M So, the heat regime has arrived. Watched a blob of moisture crawl across Minnesota most of the day in hopes it would arrive in EAU, but, no such luck. Just sticky (rain-free) weather.
8/20/2010 8:00 AM 0.10 M M M M Huge blob of moisture moves NE through the Chippewa Valley overnight toward north and east and "parks" over NE MN & NW WI. While a tenth of an inch is better than a trace, it's not much better. "Eau Claire Effect" continues to manifest itself.
