Windy last night, with mostly clear skies, and occasional flurries that did not stick. Thanks for fixing the hard disk problem, it affected me yesterday morning, but I was able to enter my report later that morning.
10/10/2010 7:00 AM T T M 0.0 M Tmax: 47e; Tmin: 33. Isolated morning flurries, did not stick.
10/11/2010 7:00 AM 0.03 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 49; Tmin: 30. Off and on drizzle/rain last evening, pathetic total. For what it's worth, my total from August 10 through this morning (62 days or so) is now at: 0.39". The only dry spell like this on record went about a week longer: 26 November 2002 until 2 February 2003 (69 days), totaling 0.38" for that period, so this is near-record breaking, certainly for this time of year.
10/12/2010 6:30 AM 0.28 0.5 M 0.5 M Tmax: 55; Tmin: 32. Nothing like a drought meeting to trigger a good-sized storm. Precip started some time around 4-4:30am MDT, changing to snow about 5:30-6am MDT. Wet sloppy potato-chip sized flakes accumulate to 0.5" out of about 0.12" liquid. Need to leave early, sorry! Should be good for another 0.1-0.2" liquid, hooray! Before I forget, this is my 2nd latest measurable snowfall on record (2007 waited until October 14th).
10/13/2010 7:00 AM 0.46 3.8 M 1.0 M Tmax: 40e (calendar daily high: 42); Tmin: 26 (hardest freeze so far). Snow cover patchy, around 80%. Most of the aspen leaves have either turned or fallen off. Storm total: 0.74/4.3", more than any model anticipated, a nice break from our drought pattern for the last two months (this one doubled the moisture I had received between August 10 and October 11...).
10/14/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 49; Tmin: 28 (39 since midnight). Snow on its way out...

10/19/2010 7:00 AM 0.25 0.1 M 0.0 M Tmax: 44; Tmin: 27. Odd precip event yesterday, snow mixed in with rain around 3pm, becoming briefly moderate by 3:30pm, but then returned to mostly rain which ended around 9pm MDT. Measured 0.1" of slush when I got home around 7pm, might have been more. While we had a trace of snow on the ground last night, it has gone away by this morning, just corrected my original 'T' entry.
10/20/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 50; Tmin: 30 (31 since midnight). Fall colors have mostly come and gone up here, appear to be peaking in lower foothills (6.5-7K) right now.

10/25/2010 6:30 AM 0.13 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 45; Tmin: 38 since midnight/35 or so yesterday morning. Spill-over commenced around midnight, along with good wind gusts (G50, I guestimate). Wind died down overnight, but spill-over rain continued at about 0.02"/h, very impressive. My wife just informed me that it changed over to snow around 7:40am, but that will be material for tomorrow's report. Monthly total already up to 1.42", very nice for La Niña October!
10/26/2010 7:00 AM 0.18 2.3 M 1.5 M Tmax: 42 (below freezing after about 8am); Tmin: 17 (hovering just below 20F for most of the night due to the wind); rain changing to snow around 7:30am yesterday with impressive FroPa that gave spill-over rain showers all the way down to Boulder. Steady light snow in evening that brought most of the recorded snowfall amount (morning FroPa only gave us 0.4"). Windy and a few flurries this morning.
10/27/2010 7:00 AM 0.04 0.7 M 1.0 M Tmax: 27; Tmin: 17. Yesterday was the first day below freezing all day of the season, must have gusted into the 50s and 60s mph, my snowboard got turned over, so the snowfall amount is a guestimate based on snow:rain ratios observed in evening/overnight. Despite only 1" of snow on ground, coverage is universal now, except in very open areas where the wind has scoured it out. Looking forward to warm-up next few days.

10/30/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 56; Tmin: 42. Fire just west of Boulder 70% contained (140-150 acres); fire started around 8-8:10am, right after the low-level inversion got broken along with 40mph wind gusts. This fire was clearly human-caused (near the Elephant buttress just north of the canyon, and 1 mile west of Boulder. No homes got lost, but 1800 people got evacuated for 24h. Winds died down in afternoon, but night remained mild and a bit breezy.
10/31/2010 7:00 AM 0.04 T M 0.0 M Tmax: 57; Tmin: 29. Evening rain showers turned to flurries after midnight, but no accumulation. Nevertheless, Halloween has brought some snow to us, yet again, if only a trace. There is still a very small chance for some more snow (at this elevation) tonight, too. Then another warm-up/ridge for next week.

Anticipate some snow thru Thxgvg, and potentially sub-zero lows by then. 12/4/2010 7:00 AM 0.01 0.1 M 2.5 M Tmax: 43; Tmin: 15 (huge drop right after midnight when the winds finally died down). Spill-over snow both in morning and evening, snow depth is from evening, since there was melting during the day. Foggy and riming this morning.

12/17/2010 7:00 AM 0.06 3.6 M 6.0 M Tmax: 23; Tmin: 7. Snow began around 5-6pm, and lasted thru most of the night (it might have let up in the early morning hours), dropping 1.9" by midnight, and another 1.7" by this morning. Extreme fluff: 60:1 ratio means that one could look through the snow onto the deck, for instance. Funny how the first storm was a complete dud, and so was the 2nd in terms of liquid, but it sure looks a lot prettier now (snow picking up again this morning).

12/31/2010 7:00 AM 0.25 5.1 M 7.5 M Tmax: 19 (PM high: 16); Tmin: -9F (subzero since about 6:30pm). Low was hit just about midnight, with continuous arctic snow since about 7pm (10:1 ratio, with 1.1" from 7pm until 7am this morning). This denser stuff is packing down the 'snowpack', so that snow depth has stagnated since then. Overcast and still snowing lightly this morning.
1/1/2011 7:00 AM T T M 6.5 M Tmax: 3; Tmin: -10F (-9F since midnight). Raw conditions last night, with gusts up to about 40mph, and temperatures hovering in the high singles below 0F. There was snow on the snowboard that I assume was just blown off trees and redistributed on the ground. However, there were occasional flurries as well (spill-over), hence the trace. This was the coldest New Year's eve in my 21-year record. Now for the climb back towards freezing. Happy 2011!

I think that we should get more than last time, and also get at least as cold tomorrow and Tuesday (highs in the singles at best, and lows down to -10F or so).
1/10/2011 7:00 AM 0.31 7.0 M 9.5 M Tmax: 17; Tmin: -10. Only 0.2" since midnight; arctic needle snow after 6pm (switch from >20: 1 to 10:1), as the temperatures dropped into the lower single 0F. Clear and calm this morning, -10F ties my low for the winter so far. Made a correction to the totals, had forgotten that the first 0.05/0.7" fell by 7am yesterday, sorry!
1/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 0.4 M 8.5 M Tmax: 10; Tmin: -11 (that was yesterday around 8am; last evening hit about -7F before rising again; this morning's low was -4F right around sunrise when the wind let up; all of these temperatures were the coldest in 21 years of measurements on that date). We had spill-over snow off and on in last 24h (in addition to snow blowing off trees). Interesting drive down to Boulder, the inversion was just above town (5.6K?!) right after 7am. Foothills lab dropped from about 14F to 0F in just a few minutes around that time.
1/12/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 7.5 M Tmax: 14 yesterday evening/16 by sunrise today; Tmin: -4 yesterday morning/+6F since midnight. Strong inversion just below Jamestown this morning, temperature dropped more than 10F in about a mile horizontally/100' vertically. 1/13/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 7.5 M Tmax: 29; Tmin: 16 (22 since midnight). Looks like Boulder Valley got 'flushed out' last night (temperature around 7am was 24 at my house, and 43 in Boulder).
1/14/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 7.5 M Tmax: 33; Tmin: 24. Windy enough to reignite a control burn between 4mile and Peewink fire south(east) of us, with snow on the ground it sounds like a crownfire except for the relative cold to slow it down. Supposedly under control now. We are off to Steamboat today.
1/15/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 7.0 M Tmax: 35e; Tmin: 24e. Columbine (30NW Steamboat Springs) had about 3-4" new snow by 6pm last evening, and another 1/4" or so overnight.

1/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.09 0.5 M 7.0 M Tmax: 37; Tmin: 31e. This was supposed to be a big storm day near Columbine, but we only saw about 4.5" of snow (with some freezing drizzle thrown in) - picked up about 3" in 3h last evening. Most of our own precip fell in early morning hours, most likely sloppy snow. Measurement was actually taken later today.
1/18/2011 7:00 AM 0.05 0.7 M 7.0 M Tmax: 36; Tmin: 22 (right around observing time). Snow fell mostly in early afternoon, right around the time that I-70 had major problems, and Berthoud/Loveland Pass got closed.

1/20/2011 7:00 AM 0.13 2.3 M 9.0 M Tmax: 32; Tmin: 01. Afternoon cold front gave Boulder more than twice what we had here, oh well. Pretty cold overnight.

1/22/2011 7:15 AM 0.06 0.8 M 9.0 M Tmax: 26 (both before and after midnight); Tmin: 15 (yesterday morning)/19 since midnight (now). A few spill-over flurries commenced right before midnight, along with continued obnoxious wind, but the more serious stuff began about 4:30am, as the wind died down (based on my neighbor's RH measurements that hit 80% around that time: http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation/WXDailyHistory.asp?ID=KCOBAR-K1 ). Nice surprise to get it this early, I was expecting the brunt of this later this morning. Coming down at about 0.5"/h, visibility under one mile.
1/23/2011 7:00 AM 0.06 1.2 M 9.5 M Tmax: 27; Tmin: 6 (right after midnight when it was nearly calm - warming up to 16 by 7am, with wind). Snow ended pretty much before noon. Hope to see a little more tonight.
1/24/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 9.0 M Tmax: 27; Tmin: 15. Backfilling for the time I was in Seattle (AMS) - apparently it stayed dry.
1/25/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 9.0 M Tmax: 25; Tmin: 13 (yesterday morning around 8am; 16 since midnight). Apparently still no snow yesterday (but rain in Seattle...).
1/26/2011 7:00 AM 0.04 0.8 M 9.5 M Tmax: 33; Tmin: 12. Finally some snow, a bit underwhelming.
1/27/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 9.0 M Tmax: 32; Tmin: 16 (22 since midnight). Finally some sunshine in Seattle...
1/28/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 8.5 M Tmax: 39; Tmin: 25 (29 since midnight). Looking quite wintery from Monday onwards - three days to go...
1/29/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 8.5 M Tmax: 45 (Boulder broke a daily record with 68F); Tmin: 25. Waiting for the big cold snap next week...
1/30/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 8.5 M Tmax: 39; Tmin: 17. One more day before we get hit by the coldest airmass in many years, probably the coldest in February since 1989.
1/31/2011 6:20 AM T T M 8.0 M Tmax: 44 (surprisingly high); Tmin: 15. Snow must have just begun, needed to leave early, but it was covering surfaces by 6:20am, and snowing steadily. Expect to see -20sF by tomorrow (evening), and a rare subzero high tomorrow as well. Would be surprised if we get more than 4", though, I believe the weather service assumes that the snow will remain fluffy thru the event.
2/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.11 1.4 M 9.5 M Tmax: 15 (that was yesterday morning at 6:20am; PM high: 5F); Tmin: -18F (dropping this morning with mostly clear skies). Yesterday's midnight reading of -13F set the first of four daily records to come. My February record since 1991 is -21F, looks like we have a good shot at that this evening. Back in 1989, I guestimate lows in the high -30sF in early February... The current airmass was just too dry and cold to squeeze out more than I report here.
2/2/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.2 M 9.5 M Tmax: -9; Tmin: -28 (right around midnight). This is my coldest day since December 1990. As I wrote yesterday, early February 1989 was probably colder by at least 5F on one or two days. Nevertheless, I am impressed with new February records that broke the old ones by 12F for Tmax and 7F for Tmin! Very light snow fell until sunset, fluffier than expected, but also less. Clear and calm now, time to warm up. Will be interesting to see whether we stay below 0F today.
2/3/2011 7:00 AM T T M 9.0 M Tmax: 0 (both yesterday's high, and reading this morning at 7am); Tmin: -25 (yesterday morning)/-9 (midnight). Both yesterday's high and the post-midnight low were new daily records. Roughly 63+h of 0F or below, ending this morning at 7am: longest such stretch since December 1998 (I believe that February 1989 had a stretch twice that long). Amazing lack of wind this morning, with some light flurries overnight from the north(west); otherwise mostly clear.
2/4/2011 7:00 AM 0.07 1.3 M 10.0 M Tmax: 26; Tmin: 0 (yesterday at 7am)/8 (since midnight). Nice little snow yesterday afternoon, still mostly calm around here, amazing!
2/5/2011 7:00 AM T T M 10.0 M Tmax: 35 (1st above freezing this month); Tmin; 19. A few spill-over flurries, starting to accumulate after observing time.
2/6/2011 5:00 PM 0.71 9.6 M 17.0 M Tmax: 30 (late morning yesterday); Tmin; 12e. Morning snow showers were quite fluffy yesterday (20:1 for 0.6" by 11am), snow off and on all PM and overnight, more than I expected, but not nearly as much as further south of me (Rich Keen ended up with just under 1.5 ft. for the 5th and 6th). Since my measurement was taken later during the day, I may have overestimated how much fell by this morning. However, the snowplow came through in the AM and roads were still freshly plowed when we got back home.
2/7/2011 7:00 AM 0.03 0.5 M 16.0 M Tmax: 20; Tmin: 0 (late evening; 4F since midnight). Spill-over snow this morning, calm and clear last evening, with a nice sliver of the moon to our west.
2/8/2011 6:30 AM 0.18 3.1 M 17.0 M Tmax: 29; Tmin: -8 (at 6:30am). Looks like we got the short end of the stick with the FroPa around 9pm (at least based on radar and reports so far on CoCoRaHS). A couple of inches of fluffy snows from that, and then the usual arctic fizzle snow since midnight (when it was 6F). If we clear out tonight, we might hit -20F again.
2/9/2011 7:00 AM 0.10 0.9 M 17.0 M Tmax: 4 (calendar daily high: 6F at midnight - a new daily record); Tmin: -15F just before midnight, as well as just before observing time, both daily records as well, the latter one is the 5th so far this month!). Light snow flurries (dense!) continued all day into the evening, clearing around 8pm when the temperature dropped below -12F for the first time. What a wintery start to this month, easily the coldest since '89. Big warm-up progged over weekend...
2/10/2011 7:00 AM T T M 16.0 M Tmax: 14 (another daily record, this is #4 for Tmax this month); Tmin: -13 (yesterday morning)/+1 since midnight. Breezy to windy night with blowing snow, and possibly some spill-over, impossible to tell. Looks like we will warm up/dry out for at least a week.
2/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 15.0 M Tmax: 18 (missed daily record by 1F); Tmin; 4 (yesterday morning)/12 (this morning). Moderate snow drifts on our roads from blowing snow... Looks like we are warming up, but the average for the 1st 10 days of February is just 5F, coldest by far in my record (if a few degrees warmer than I estimate for 1989), and some 17F below 'normal'. Interesting tidbit: on way down the hill, I noticed that yesterday's inversion was near the top of Olde Stage Road (5800'), with temperatures around 7am about 10F warmer some 500 ft. above Boulder than in town. This morning the temperature difference was about the same, but the inversion had lowered half way down to the valley, so the cold air is maybe 300 ft. at most thick. Will be interesting to see how far it will flush out today...
2/12/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 15.0 M Tmax: 27; Tmin: 13 (yesterday morning)/20 (since midnight). Windy and mostly sunny this morning. Will be interesting to see how warm we will get in next few days.
2/13/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 15.0 M Tmax: 37; Tmin: 23 (since midnight). Broke freezing for the 2nd time in two weeks, 'heatwave'! Quite windy with continued moderate drifting overnight.
2/14/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 14.0 M Tmax: 45 (tied with January 28th for the warmest temperature since December 14th - feels much warmer than mid-40s (Boulder hit mid-60s today); Tmin: 20 (fairly calm overnight). Nice sunrise with mid-level Ac/As to our east.
2/15/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 13.0 M Tmax: 52 (daily record high - just 13 days after hitting -28F...); Tmin: 29 since midnight (23 yesterday morning). Occasionally breezy, but not as bad as over the weekend.
2/16/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 12.5 M Tmax: 48; Tmin: 27.
2/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.2 M 12.0 M Tmax: 47; Tmin: 24. Snow started to fall just before 6am.
2/18/2011 7:00 AM 0.03 0.6 M 12.5 M Tmax: 32; Tmin; 13. Snow fell mostly after sunset, near-full moon later on, with almost no clouds.
2/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 12.0 M Tmax: 43; Tmin: 22 (since midnight; about 14 yesterday morning).
2/20/2011 7:00 AM 0.12 1.5 M 13.0 M Tmax: 44 (surprisingly high); Tmin: 19. Impressive snow shower right around midnight that dropped the bulk of my snow in just over half an hour. Unfortunately, this was followed by a windy night.
2/21/2011 7:00 AM T T M 12.5 M Tmax: 28; Tmin: 13. Spill-over flurries off and on all day, but only amounting to a trace.
2/22/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 12.5 M Tmax: 26; Tmin: 16 since midnight (14 yesterday morning). Went skiing at Winterpark yesterday - brutal windchill above treeline, but otherwise good (6-8" powder on top of snowpack - some south-facing runs had ice underneath).
2/23/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 12.0 M Tmax: 35; Tmin: 17 (18 since midnight). Waiting for next snow...
2/24/2011 7:00 AM 0.03 0.3 M 12.0 M Tmax: 37; Tmin: 12. Light snow overnight, right around midnight. Should be more tonight, but not nearly what could have been if the arctic air would have made a stronger push.
2/25/2011 8:00 AM 0.20 3.3 M 15.0 M Tmax: 32; Tmin: 10. Overnight snow, heaviest this morning (note the delayed measurement time, in-service day means we could 'sleep in'). Some fog and riming overnight. Visibility 1/8-1/4 mile this morning.
2/26/2011 7:00 AM 0.11 1.5 M 15.0 M Tmax: 26; Tmin: 12 (yesterday morning)/20 (since midnight). Snow pretty much ended before sunset; rising temperatures overnight w/o much wind. A few flurries spilling over this morning, along with hazy sunshine. Currently 25F.
2/27/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 14.0 M Tmax: 36; Tmin: 21 (22 since midnight). Some melting yesterday, a touch of spring in the air, breezy, too. Still a little snow left in the trees.
2/28/2011 7:00 AM T T M 13.5 M Tmax: 36; Tmin: 17 (with some wind). Some sort of FroPa in early afternoon, along with a few flurries (also later on) that dropped us back into the 20s by 4pm. Looks like March will come in like a lamb...
3/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 13.0 M Tmax: 43; Tmin: 20. March is coming like a lamb...
3/2/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 12.5 M Tmax: 43; Tmin: 20 (23 after midnight). Still coming in like a lamb...
3/3/2011 7:00 AM T T M 12.0 M Tmax: 50; Tmin: 28. Breezy overnight, and enough spill-over snow to give us a 'solid trace'. Froze over a few puddles that had formed on exposed dirt road surface yesterday, maybe the beginning of our 'mud season'...
3/4/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 0.3 M 11.5 M Tmax: 43; Tmin: 19. Afternoon snow showers hung onto snowboard long enough to be measurable at 8pm. Breezy overnight, with mostly clear skies. No comment on forecasts calling for more snow today. The storm to watch will be in 3-4 days (Mon-Tue next week).
3/5/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 11.5 M Tmax: 32; Tmin: 15. At this point I was still optimistic with regard to upcoming storm (entered this a few days later).
3/6/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 11.0 M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 22. Windy last 24h, maybe a flurry or two.
3/7/2011 7:00 AM 0.09 1.2 M 12.5 M Tmax: 36; Tmin: 14. Drawn-out light snow from afternoon yesterday into late evening, pretty much only a trace after midnight.
3/8/2011 7:00 AM T T M 12.0 M Tmax: 32; Tmin: 08. Nice riming, but horrible forecast bust - just a trace!
3/9/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 0.3 M 12.0 M Tmax: 31; Tmin: 08 (7am yesterday)/17 since midnight. Light spill-over snow after midnight, still snowing this morning.
3/10/2011 7:00 AM T T M 11.5 M Tmax: 34; Tmin: 17 (yesterday morning)/24 since midnight. Remaining snowcover about 80%, and icy surface this morning.
3/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 10.5 M Tmax: 48; Tmin: 33 (!). Breezy and warm night, but not as windy as predicted up here - gusting to 70mph in Boulder, however...
3/12/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 10.0 M Tmax: 47; Tmin: 20 (even hit 25 midnight to nix our first frost-free day of the year). Late morning two fires ignited in Boulder County - the first one (by Button Rock, west of Lyons) was 'controlled burn' that flared up with the wind; 2nd one was in Lefthand Canyon at the usual spot (shooting range 3.7 miles up), or could have been a downed powerline... Grew to 200 acres before airtanker arrived from NM (and winds had died down somewhat). Frightening thing: it has not really been that dry, or was humidity particularly low (in the 20% range). Definitely early in season for this.
3/13/2011 7:00 AM 0.20 3.0 M 13.0 M Tmax: 43; Tmin: 22. Snow began late in evening, must have snowed pretty good after midnight, done by 6am MDT (1st day of that). Nice little snow. Highest amount so far this pathetic March, and nothing major on horizon...
3/14/2011 7:00 AM T T M 11.0 M Tmax: 37; Tmin: 23. A few spill-over flurries in morning, mostly sunny in afternoon. Not as breezy as in Nederland (had to go there in middle of day).
3/15/2011 7:00 AM T T M 10.5 M Tmax: 49; Tmin: 26. A few spill-over flurries last evening (with wind), but no accumulation.
3/16/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 10.0 M Tmax: 47; Tmin: 34(!). Red flag conditions yet again...
3/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 9.5 M Tmax: 55 (warmest so far this year); Tmin: 30 (dropped 13 F since midnight). Continental divide is 'under', in fact, it looks like snow is falling just a few miles west this morning. Another storm is coming in, but on the now familiar awkward track that is marginal for us. Snowcover is down to about 65%.
3/18/2011 7:00 AM 0.21 2.7 M 11.0 M Tmax: 52; Tmin: 17. Overnight snow never got heavier than 0.5"/h, and had a hard time getting going (radar was indicating snow well before it actually reached the ground, starting around 8:30pm MDT).
3/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 8.5 M Tmax: 41; Tmin: 17 (yesterday morning)/24 (since midnight). Looks like most of the fresh snow is gone again. Coverage down to 60% - I give just a few more days before tracing out.
3/20/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 7.5 M Tmax: 56; Tmin: 29.
3/21/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 7.0 M Tmax: 51; Tmin: 27. Geting close to the 50% cover.
3/22/2011 7:00 AM 0.07 1.0 M 7.0 M Tmax: 60 (warmest of the year so far); Tmin: 24. Overnight snow, roughly between 2 and 4am MDT. We did trace out in afternoon before getting the new layer of snow.
3/23/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.2 M 6.5 M Tmax: 33e; Tmin: 19e. We went to Columbine to wallow in shoulder-deep snow, numbers are estimates. Heaviest snow along Peak-to-Peak highway right after noon MDT: Ward (snow sticking to road). Columbine had received about 3-4" by the time we got there (4pm MDT).
3/24/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 42e; Tmin: 14. Nice spring day in Columbine, a few flurries from passing clouds, snowpack is a solid 5', covering up all of our windows except the east-facing entrance and deck. Our snow cover probably slipped below 50% as of yesterday afternoon.
3/25/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 0.3 M T M Tmax: 41; Tmin: 22. Afternoon snow shower between 3-4pm MDT lowered temperatures into 20s! Meanwhile, near-blizzard conditions above 9K on Storm Peak (Steamboat ski resort) - they stopped Storm Peak Express from running, just before then, I could hardly see lift in front of me. This resulted in about 3" by later that evening in Columbine.
3/26/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.1 M T M Tmax: 42e; Tmin: 17. Overnight spill-over snow, mainly around 3am MDT. A few flurries lingering this morning, chilly! Returned from Columbine in late afternoon, very showery nature of snowfall along the way, luckily only light snow on Rabbit Ears, and none at Eisenhower Tunnel.
3/27/2011 7:00 AM 0.04 0.5 M 4.5 M Tmax: 39; Tmin: 18. One of those little evening snowfalls - clear after midnight. Enough ground cover to get above 50%...
3/28/2011 7:00 AM 0.04 0.8 M 4.5 M Tmax: 41; Tmin: 20 (23 since midnight). Some accumulating snow during daytime (I was there to measure it before it melted), and dejavu event in evening that dropped about 0.5" like previous evening. Flurrying this morning.
3/29/2011 7:00 AM 0.13 2.3 M 6.0 M Tmax: 32; Tmin: 12. Mostly spill-over snow all day, tapering off to a trace after 7pm MDT. There was an interesting low-level upslope surge around midnight that coincided with snow below 6K, so we had reverse road conditions this morning (slippery below, mostly dry between 6-8K, and snowcovered higher up). We have now succeeded in surpassing the driest March on record (2004), but are still way behind 'normal'.
3/30/2011 7:00 AM T T M 4.5 M Tmax: 36; Tmin: 14 (22 since midnight). Spill-over flurries this morning, maybe one more round of light snow in next 24h, then a return of warm/dry, hopefully not too windy weather.
3/31/2011 7:00 AM 0.04 0.4 M 4.5 M Tmax: 37; Tmin: 24 (30 since midnight). Spill-over snow off and on through much of last 24h, half of it since 1am MDT. Quite windy as well, hard to measure snow (snow board got blown over, I measured on top of the old (hard) snowpack). Looks like a few warm days on tap, so I expect to return to a trace on ground by tonight.
4/1/2011 7:00 AM T T M T M Tmax: 46; Tmin: 35 since midnight. Breezy night. Snow cover has shrunk to about 25%, one of our local ponds is completely ice-free. Last month was the 5th warmest March in 21 years, and the 2nd driest/least snowiest (right behind 2004), with 0.90/13.1".
4/2/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 54; Tmin: 32. Calm enough last night to let us cool off, ahead of the warmest day of the year.
4/3/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 63; Tmin: 42 (windy). DIA hit 84F yesterday (old record: 76!). Crystal Gulch fire in Larimer County grew overnight from 20 to over 1000 acres, not far from Redstone Canyon where my brother-in-law lives. Coldfront knocking on our door with dark clouds to the northwest.
4/4/2011 7:00 AM 0.20 1.5 M 3.0 M Tmax: 48e; Tmin: 10. FroPa around 9-10am MDT, with snow beginning right afterwards. First thunderstorm of the year right after 11am, with lots of graupel, but precipitation ends by 1pm MDT, all in all less moisture, and ending much earlier, than expected. Snow cover jumped from T to 3" due to coverage change. Clear and breezy this morning.
4/5/2011 7:00 AM T T M 2.0 M Tmax: 32; Tmin: 13 (26 since midnight). Spill-over flurries yesterday, just plain windy with rising temperatures overnight.
4/6/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 54; Tmin: 27. Still 42F after midnight, but colder air oozed in just a few hours later, now foggy and 27F. On my way down (7am), it was drizzling below 8K, not enough to coat the roads just yet. Should be a good day to help contain the Crystal Fire in Larimer County.
4/7/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.1 M T M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 25. Whoa, another dud! Can't believe how hard it is to get a decent precip event these days - persistent precipitation to the north all day, then a quick transition to our southeast in early evening when we had an hour or so of light snow. This April is not turning things around...
4/8/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 46; Tmin: 25.
4/9/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 58; Tmin: 26.
4/10/2011 7:00 AM 0.05 0.2 M T M Tmax: 58; Tmin: 18. Two thunderstorms overnight (right around midnight and 2am MDT), with mostly graupel and a few snow flurries, pathetic totals. Short-lived moisture surplus canceled out by windy conditions from 3am onwards. What an annoying spring this year.
4/11/2011 7:00 AM T T M T M Tmax: 35; Tmin: 23 since midnight. Spill-over flurries in afternoon yesterday, a blustery day all in all.
4/12/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 49; Tmin: 27 since midnight. At least the wind has died down... Most ice on local ponds/'lakes' has disappeared, pretty early.
4/13/2011 7:00 AM T T M T M Tmax: 51; Tmin: 25. Overcast this morning, overnight 'surge' socked us in, and lowered temperatures by 8F since midnight despite cloudiness. There were a few flurries on snowboard/gage this morning, hence the trace. Weather service is now predicting "5-9 inches" for my neck of the woods. Would be nice if we finally got something close to this (last time was in early February!). Snow coverage is now under 10%.
4/14/2011 6:15 AM 1.41 15.7 M 13.0 M Tmax: 33; Tmin: 25. Wow, a lot more snow and moisture than expected! Hardest snowfall rate around 8pm when we were getting 2"/h for a couple of hours. Let up a bit after midnight, but managed 1"/h for most of the night. Lights flickering this morning, but never lost power. First 1' storm of season, finally! Note early readout, we got some more after the 6:15am reading.
4/15/2011 7:00 AM 0.10 1.2 M 10.0 M Tmax: 35; Tmin: 16. Most of the snow fell within a few hours after my early observing time yesterday (6:15am). Blowing snow for much of the day and evening after the snow ended. Clear and almost calm this morning.
4/16/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 7.0 M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 18 (28 since midnight). Losing about 3" per day...
4/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 4.0 M Tmax: 44; Tmin: 29 (31 since midnight).
4/18/2011 7:00 AM 0.12 0.0 M 1.5 M Tmax: 51; Tmin: 31. Repeated spill-over rain showers after about 2pm MDT, and continuing into night (0.01" after 2am). Brief clearing after midnight brought the light freeze. Quite warm this morning (41F). Snow cover approaching 50%, if we don't get snow tonight, we will be back to a trace. Some model runs (from Saturday) were quite optimistic, but have now backed off, with temperatures remaining too high and precip amounts too low to give us any significant snow.
4/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.37 2.1 M 2.0 M Tmax: 54; Tmin: 28. Rain commenced around 8:30pm MDT last evening, and changed to snow shortly after 9pm. Good precip rates through about 11:30pm, including a 'potato-chip' phase after 10pm when flakes measured 1-2" diameter. Temperatures hovered right above freezing through much of this, hence the low snow:water ratio. We had traced out in afternoon before this rolled in. Calm and partly cloudy this morning. Let's hope we can recycle some of this moisture (2.00" in less than a week!).
4/20/2011 7:00 AM 0.05 0.5 M 0.5 M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 23. Day-time spill-over flurries were followed by a mid-evening snow/-pellet shower that deposited 0.5". Foggy this morning. Another round of moisture tonight?!
4/21/2011 6:30 AM 0.21 1.7 M 1.5 M Tmax: 37; Tmin: 23 yesterday morning/31 since midnight. Disappointing evening snow (0.07/0.3") that lasted for an hour or two in the evening, with temperatures remaining just above freezing; more intense shower this morning (still snowing hard when I collected this sample at 6:30am) that gave us 0.14/1.4". Roads were fairly messy down to 8K this morning.
4/22/2011 7:00 AM 0.05 0.4 M T M Tmax: 51; Tmin: 26. Had 0.03/0.3" yesterday morning to finish up that 'storm', then a fairly sunny and warm day, followed by five minutes of mayhem around 8pm MDT, with graupel, rain, and snow that amounted to a whopping 0.02/0.1". Mostly windy and clear rest of the night, with spill-over flurries this morning.
4/23/2011 7:00 AM 0.11 2.5 M 2.5 M Tmax: 37; Tmin: 20. Surprise snow early this morning, amazingly fluffy for this time of year: 23/1! Still snowing lightly at observing time, I guestimate that it started after 4am, so close to 1"/h. More expected tonight and tomorrow night. Happy Easter!
4/24/2011 7:00 AM 0.26 3.6 M 5.0 M Tmax: 31e; Tmin: 20(yesterday morning)/22 (since midnight); virtually all of this snow fell before midnight, less than 1" in the morning after 7am, rest in later PM. More to come today...
4/25/2011 7:00 AM 0.47 5.5 M 6.5 M Tmax:32 (two days in a row at or below freezing!); Tmin: 24. PM snow, most intense around 6pm MDT when we were getting about 2"+/h for an hour or so. Only 0.01/0.1" after midnight, and mostly clear this morning (half moon). Thick cloud deck to our east between about 5.8 and 7K. Roads were o.k., despite almost a foot of snow in last two days - residual heat and diffuse radiation can melt a lot of snow this time of year... April on track to be near-normal, with more snow in next 36h or so.
4/26/2011 7:00 AM 0.13 1.4 M 4.5 M Tmax: 42; Tmin: 24. One stray snow shower right after noon yesterday, and the main snow shower in mid-evening, right around sunset. Clear and a bit breezy this morning, with clouds hugging the divide.
4/27/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.1 M 2.0 M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 22. Stray snow shower right over lunch, otherwise lots of clouds in PM without anything to show for it. Breezy overnight and clear this morning. Looks like we are done for a couple of days.
4/28/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 1.0 M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 25 (since midnight; 23 yesterday morning). Breezy and cold day, foehnwall stays over divide for much of day. Snow coverage down to just over 50%.
4/29/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 53; Tmin: 34 (28 yesterday morning at 7am). One warm day. Next few days look cold yet again.
4/30/2011 7:00 AM T T M T M Tmax: 44; Tmin: 15. Spill-over snow never amounted to more than a trace - a dud. As usual, the cold air did come in, though.
5/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 34; Tmin: 18. Lots of clouds, but snow never really made it here.
5/2/2011 7:00 AM 0.06 1.0 M 1.0 M Tmax: 33; Tmin: 15. PM clouds finally squeezed out two half-inch showers to cover up the ground. Clear this morning, no wind.
5/3/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 20 (28 since midnight MST - rising temperatures thru the night, with not much wind). Odd shower around 12:45pm MDT yesterday that looked very impressive on radar (>40db), but skipped over my gage (when it was still below freezing). Oh well, expectations are low for this La Niña May, but we should get a little bit more moisture tomorrow.
5/4/2011 7:00 AM T T M T M Tmax: 52; Tmin: 31. Early morning spill-over flurries actually covered about half of the ground with a very thin layer of snow (say, 1mm, or 1/25 of an inch). Looks like a fairly dramatic warm-up after tonight.
5/5/2011 7:00 AM T T M T M Tmax: 49; Tmin: 26. Lingering flurries yesterday morning, but apparently no afternoon snow despite considerable foehnwall. Breezy night, mostly clear. Looks like a 'nice' weekend for the first time since early April coming up.
5/6/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 58; Tmin: 34 since midnight (31 or so yesterday morning). Snow cover down to 10% or less. First moth of the season in front of kitchen window last night (air temperature near 36F at that point). Models are still hedging about next week's storm. Could be a repeat of the April 13-14th storm, or a complete dud. If we get hit, it would be around Wednesday (five days from now).
5/7/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 63; forgot Tmin, but it was above freezing
5/8/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 67; Tmin: 40; last day with any snow left on our property.
5/9/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 69; Tmin: 45. Last patch of snow gone. Hummingbirds have come back into our neighborhood this weekend, about one week later than normal. First Pasque flower poken its head out, also quite late. More on the upcoming storm tomorrow, looking good for at least half an inch of moisture.
5/10/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 68; Tmin: 26(!). Windy FroPa last evening, but no precipitation that I noticed. This should be quite different by tomorrow when the second storm tracks much more favorably. Five of the last 10 years, we had a snowstorm in the ballpark of about a foot near the 11th of May, so this could fit right in!
5/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.56 4.2 M 3.5 M Tmax: 55; Tmin: 29 (both yesterday morning and this morning). A stray snow shower just before midnight gave us 0.01/T; real snow began between 2-3am MDT, accumulating at about 2"/h between 6-7am MDT. Probably 'lost' a few inches due to evaporation underneath precipitating clouds for 6h or so last night (started out with just over 20% RH when clouds moved in before sunset). Should be an all-day snow (pellet) event, hopefully lasting well into tomorrow, depending on speed of low pressure system. Could become the biggest snowstorm of season, how about that - previous record here for latest PEAK snowstorm of season was in early May 2001 when we got almost two feet.
5/12/2011 6:30 AM 0.99 7.5 M 7.0 M Tmax: 35 (above freezing for two hours in afternoon); Tmin: 28. Lots of snow pellets in AM mixed in with snow, a real break from about 3:20pm to 5:30pm MDT (even some sunshine). Second round of snow after that much less productive than first one, 2.8" total after 5:30pm, with only an hour or so of light snow around midnight and starting again this morning (T/0.1" since 1am MDT). Made observation early to get the meltwater data. Steady snow this morning on way down the mountain, mixed in with rain below about 6.5K, but some snowflakes on windshield down to about 5.7K. Overall, a good soaker, but a bit underwhelming for snowfall totals (1.55/11.7" so far). This is the 6th time in 10 years to measure an inch or more of moisture with 9-20" of snow on or around May 11th (+/-3 days), quite often the last big snowstorm of the season!
5/13/2011 7:00 AM 0.03 0.5 M 5.0 M Tmax: 41; Tmin: 28. Snow ended by late morning. Storm totals: 1.58/12.2" - this was the 6th time in one decade that we received close to a foot of snow around the 11th of May (+/-3 days). Sunny this morning, with fog/cloudbank between about 6-7K. Looks like more moisture tomorrow, followed by another mid-week storm next week - does not look like a major warm-up any time soon.
5/14/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 1.0 M Tmax: 50; Tmin: 27. Overcast this morning in anticipation of our next precipitation event. Snow coverage down to about 65%.
5/15/2011 7:00 AM 0.33 2.1 M 2.0 M Tmax: 34; Tmin: 26. Mixed rain/snow changed to snow about 4:30pm MDT, heaviest around 6-7pm. Overnight freezing drizzle and light snow. Back to having cold and wet weekends (last weekend being the exception that proves that rule). Big storm looming for Wednesday-Saturday, 3-6 days out.
5/16/2011 7:00 AM 0.03 0.2 M 1.0 M Tmax: 33(this cold is getting old); Tmin: 27. Light snow in morning, freezing drizzle into the night, pretty much fog all day. We should get a break from this into Wednesday morning, then another big one possible, warmer overall, so less snow, but possibly more moisture. As a matter of fact, it was sunny this morning, with thick clouds/fog below us between about 6-8K.
5/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 58; Tmin; 31. One more warm day before our next storm...
5/18/2011 6:30 AM 0.21 T M T M Tmax: 54; Tmin: 32. Most of the precipitation fell as a rain shower yesterday afternoon (0.19), but I also woke up to a snow pellet shower this morning that brought the additional 0.02/T by 6:30am, my early observing time. Foggy and occasional drizzly almost all the way down the mountain (6-8.5K) around 7am. Looks like another 1" of liquid is coming our way, much of this in the form of heavy wet snow tonight, I think. Given the background humidity levels, that might be an underestimate. Leftover snow patches cover about 10% of our yard.
5/19/2011 6:30 AM 1.64 10.2 M 8.5 M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 30. Off and on rain/sleet/snow showers during the day, amounting to 0.93/2.8" by 6pm MDT. Moderate to heavy snow (1"/h+) until 11:30pm or so, with another not-nearly-as-wet 6.6" (0.65"). Only light snow after that, giving me the remaing 0.8/0.06" by 6:30am. Messy drive out of our neighborhood this moring, since the plow was still busy elsewhere, and I had just switched to summer tires (which is fine most years). There was snow on the trees down to just below Jamestown (say, 6.7K), with the biggest dropoff in snwowdepth on the ground near 8K. Mostly cloudy this morning in our neighborhood, but some fog in the lower reaches of the canyon. 9am: corrected for typos in precipitation amounts.
5/20/2011 7:00 AM 0.48 4.6 M 8.0 M Tmax: 36; Tmin: 25. Mostly clear this morning, but snow in PM lasted into the night, reaching about 1"/h at times (especially around 6-7pm MDT). Total for the last two days: 14.8", and for the last 10 days: 29.3". Both numbers constitute records for this late in the season (since 1991). Maybe we can recycle some more snow today, and then there is another potential storm early-to-mid next week...
5/21/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.1 M 3.5 M Tmax: 45; Tmin: 30. Afternoon thunderstorm over Boulder missed us completely up here. Light spill-over snow this morning.
5/22/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 T M T M Tmax: 48; Tmin: 39 since midnight (breezy). Spill-over showers remain mostly west of Peak-to-Peak highway, but make it here in mid-afternoon, the form of rain and graupel. Big 24h snowloss - coverage down to about 20%. Next storm looks more and more like rain storm up here.
5/23/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Tmax: 56; Tmin: 38. Snow cover below 10%. Tricky forecast for this week, if we get more than 1" of H2O, some of it could fall as snow, but most of it will be rain.
5/24/2011 7:00 AM 0.27 T M T M Tmax: 57; Tmin: 29. Showers and thunderstorms in the area much of PM, clearing late. Narrowly missed hail storm in early PM that was still visible on the ground about 1mile to the north by 6pm.
5/25/2011 7:00 AM 0.07 T M 0.0 M Tmax: 45; Tmin: 33. Main precipitation event in late AM, possibly mixed with snow (was not there). Total amount is somewhat disappointing. Looks pretty dry for a few days. Breezy night to keep us above freezing. Snow coverage less than 1%, I called it "0".
5/26/2011 7:00 AM T 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 56; Tmin: 31. Heavy dew and frost deposited almost 0.01" in gage. The first 25 days of May have been the 2nd coldest in my record since 1991, just behind 1995. In fact, the average daily high of 49.5F is the coldest for this period. No wonder our vegetation is having a hard time getting going (no flowers to speak of, just a few inches of grass, and no aspen leaves yet). One more storm to mess with our weekend, but with great uncertainty this far out.
5/27/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 67; Tmin: 36. Overnight spill-over shower. Looks like we are in for some minor showers this weekend, then the big warm-up for next week.

Hiked from Bear Lake trailhead (with a few remaining snow drifts at east end of lake) to Emerald Lake (10.1K): still mostly snowcovered trail from Dream Lake onwards, very impressive. Emerald Lake is just melting out now, still more than 50% ice coverage on July 1st! Snow on trail in late AM was still quite firm, with slush on top.

7/14/2011 7:00 AM 0.51 T M 0.0 M Tmax: 73; Tmin: 48. Drove through storm of the day around 7pm MDT, serious erosion/muddy and gravelly runoff from Lefthand Canyon burn areas, with rocks up to soccer ball size making the road an obstacle course. At home we had pea to quarter sized (=0.5") hail covering much of the ground. No hail in gage, so it all had nicely bounced out?! Guestimating that my measurement of 0.51" in about 40' was off by a quarter inch or so. Nevertheless, the calendar-daily total of 0.52" was my 2nd daily record this month. There was a second storm around 11pm MDT that rumbled to the north just east of us, apparently hitting the 4mile burn area a second time for the day... Clear and sunny this morning, with heavy dew. Surprisingly, no hail left on ground this morning.
7/15/2011 7:00 AM 0.22 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 73; Tmin: 49. Earlier storm than typical this week, around 2pm MDT. 1.83" in last 5 days, not too shabby, but not exactly record-breaking either.

My wife was at home and reported a 'wee bit of hail', too, yesterday around 6pm MDT. Although the total was rather low, it was my 3rd daily record this month. Looks hot and mostly dry over the next week.
7/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.38 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 77; Tmin: 51. Surprisingly heavy rain for this pattern - 7th day in a row with 0.1"+... Interestingly, this report (which appears to be the highest in the state this morning) has not shown up yet on the precipitation maps - just to confirm, I measured 0.38". Tomorrow's entry for the 18th will be even higher...
7/18/2011 7:00 AM 0.45 T M 0.0 M Tmax: 77; Tmin: 51. Another 'douser', with hail mixed in, real action was just a few miles to the west, where 2" or so may have fallen, according to the radar. Nevertheless, the 0.45" constitute my 4th daily record this month, all in the space of the last 8 days. This ends the streak of daily totals above 0.1" (eight total), tieing my record for such streaks in July.
7/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 76; Tmin: 53.
7/20/2011 7:00 AM 0.08 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 78; Tmin: 53 (breezy night to keep it warm). Evening thunderstorm, missed out on the earlier storms to the south.

7/26/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 79; Tmin: 60 (!). WARM night!
7/27/2011 7:00 AM 0.08 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 73; Tmin: 57 (yesterday's calendar daily low of 59F was a new daily record, and ties with about another 5 days for the 2nd highest low for the month (record remains at 61F)). Rain broke a six-day 'dry spell'.
7/28/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 71; Tmin: 52. Brushed by PM storm.
7/29/2011 7:00 AM 0.06 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 70; Tmin: 49 (first below 50F in 13 days!). Afternoon and evening thunderstorms did not score any direct 'hits'.
7/30/2011 7:00 AM 0.03 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 75; Tmin: 54 (since midnight MST). Rain fell about 6-7pm MDT.
7/31/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 78; Tmin: 53. A rather unusual day for late July: no rain!
8/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 79; Tmin: 60 ( breezy night). Rather lengthy period of thunder and lightning around 7-8pm MDT, with very little to show for it. Unusual track of this storm: from SSE to NNW, with outflow from the east for us, followed by westerly breezes all night, associated with outflow from thunderstorms over the Divide for much of the evening. Hiked from Glacier Gorge parking lot to Andrews Glacier yesterday, returning in time before thunderstorms in late afternoon. Above the 'Loch' (around 10.2K+) still dealing with extensive snow fields, with runoff gurgling/roaring underneath... I would say 1/3-1/2 of the trail above the Loch is still under snow (on July 31st!). Hit very intense thunderstorm on Peak-to-Peak highway near Twin Sisters around 5:30pm - not reflected in CoCoRaHS this morning, I guess it fell 'in between' gages.
8/2/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 77; Tmin: 56 (late 'cool front' this morning). Weather service warns of potential heavy rain today... Yesterday's 24h Tmin of 59F was a new daily record by 5F!
8/3/2011 7:00 AM 0.27 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 72; Tmin: 48 (lowest in weeks). Did well compared to just to the north, but poorly compared to Nederland&points south. IOW, the models had the gradient right. Here is hoping for more today (my daily precipitation odds are about as high as they can get (>60%) in early August).
8/4/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 74; Tmin: 53. Nice thunderstorms to our east in evening...
8/5/2011 7:00 AM 0.20 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 73; Tmin: 50 (just before midnight). Got clipped by 1"+ storm that tracked just to our south around 4pm MDT.
8/6/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 77; Tmin: 53. Looks dry for the foreseeable future - de ja vu from last year?!
8/7/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 79; Tmin: 52. A few clouds in PM, but no hydrometeors...
8/8/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 79; Tmin: 52. Breezy.
8/9/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 77; Tmin: 47 (lowest since July 13). Dewpoints are getting lower and lower.
8/10/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 80; Tmin: 47. Dry air was replaced by moist, but non-precipitating air last night, looks like a short-lived cool-down.
8/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 71; Tmin; 48. Some convective clouds in PM, but nothing (only virga) to show for it (at least no rain drops hit my gage). Getting pretty dry around here.
8/12/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 81 (highest for August so far); Tmin: 50. Heating up...
8/13/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 71; Tmin: 49.
8/14/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 76; Tmin: 51. Breezy towards morning. Nine days in a row without rain, getting unusually dry for this time of year. Increased chances posted by NWS for today, I remain skeptical on that one.
8/15/2011 7:00 AM 0.09 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 73; Tmin: 55 (new daily record). Finally, some rain (around/just before 4pm MDT), but really not that much. Breezy morning.
8/16/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 77; Tmin: 52. Evening thunderstorm to our west, manages to squeeze out just enough moisture to wet our deck.
8/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.04 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 72; Tmin: 46 (lowest of the month so far). Multiple fast-moving thunderstorms as early as 11am MDT - not much to show for it ('wall-flower' syndrome?).
8/18/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 81; Tmin: 52.
8/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 82 (ties summer high temperature for 2011); Tmin: 59 (a daily record low (on the high side), will be colder by end of today). Breezy night to keep it warm. Expecting at least a little rain over next 48h.
8/20/2011 7:00 AM 0.11 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 76; Tmin: 49 (51 since midnight MST).
8/21/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 71; Tmin: 51. To the best of my knowledge, no rain fell yesterday (was in Denver over weekend, found 0.04" upon return from Sunday's rain).
8/22/2011 7:00 AM 0.04 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 76; Tmin: 57 (new daily record by 5F). Rain fell just before 4pm MDT, yet another near-miss.
8/23/2011 7:00 AM 0.02 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 81; Tmin: 58 (breezy, and 2nd daily record in a row). Yet another pathetic rainfall total, this month is on track for one of the drier Augusts on record.
8/24/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 82 (ties summer high yet again); Tmin: 59 (another WARM night, though not as breezy as night before - if it does not cool off substantially before midnight, this will be the 3rd daily record, this one by 5F).
8/25/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 81; Tmin: 57 (4th day in a row with record-high Tmin). One of those showers near the divide yesterday spilled a whopping 0.01" into my gage...
8/26/2011 7:00 AM 0.03 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 82 (yet again, tied for the highest of the month/year); Tmin: 53 - finally below record high levels! Evening thunderstorms to our south brush us. Nickels and dimes this month - still well below 1" (not even a third of the typical August total).
8/27/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 77; Tmin: 54.
8/28/2011 7:00 AM 0.10 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 76; Tmin: 59. Several thunderstorms from about 1pm MDT onwards, but only brief and mostly weak accumulation rates. Oh well, this is the most rain in more than a week. Here is hoping for more today. Monthly total is still below 1", or 3rd lowest in 22 Augusts...
8/29/2011 7:00 AM 0.16 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 76; Tmin: 48. Multiple thunderstorms, last one after 10pm. Finally more than 1" for the month. In fact, yesterday's 0.16" is the highest daily total since August 4th (reported on the 5th). Would love to see a replay today.
8/30/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 71; Tmin: 50. Morning showers fizzled after about 10am - disappointing.
8/31/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 78; Tmin: 55. Breezy evening with spillover rain. Biggest evaporation day so far this week (around 1/4" in atmometer).
9/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 82; Tmin: 55. Monthly total of 1.11" is 5th lowest for August since 1990, well below the 'normal' of 2.76"... Evening spill-over did not reach the gage, but associated wind increased evaporation to a 24h total of 7mm (almost 0.3")! My monthly temperature average of 64.3F effectively ties August 1995 for my warmest August on record.
9/2/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 80; Tmin: 51. Another evening of convection over divide, with nothing to show for it here but wind (and increase ET).
9/3/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 77; Tmin: 42 (lowest since solstice (22 June)). Light thundershowers missed us yesterday (pavement was wet just over a mile to the north). Expect to see 30s tonight, maybe even the first frost of the season, if it stays clear.
9/4/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 56; Tmin: 33 (just shy of a freeze). Late afternoon shower lasted for just a couple of minutes after a full day of upslope...
9/5/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 62; Tmin: 42 since midnight (35 since yesterday morning at 7am MDT). Weak upslope all day, but no clouds to speak of.
9/6/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 74; Tmin: 53. Evap is up again, breezy/warm day&night for early September.
9/7/2011 7:00 AM 0.84 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 59; Tmin: 44. This is the most precipitation since my June 20th report! Finally, a nice soaker, starting before noon yesterday, peaking once around 3-4pm, and midnight to 1am MDT. Still drizzling this morning and socked in (1/8 mile visibility). Here is hoping for more today into tomorrow...
9/8/2011 7:00 AM 0.39 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 47(!); Tmin: 39. Nice soaker - 1.23" total for event. Actual calendar totals for the 6th and 7th was 0.61" each, both new daily records.
9/9/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 58; Tmin; 37. Don't know when that rain fell, but found it in the gage by the evening. Evap rates are still very low, as through the event. Fairly clear this morning.
9/10/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 60; Tmin: 38. Sunny morning, partly cloudy in PM yesterday. Starting to look like a decent chance for cold rain about four days from now.
9/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 61; Tmin: 42. Whoops, I somehow managed to forget to enter this one until now, thanks for the Water Year summary that helped me pin down which month had a missing day! Otherwise, no harm done. Now for the number crunching to see whether WY'11 matches up with my midnight-midnight records...
9/12/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 66; Tmin: 48 (a warm and breezy night).
9/13/2011 7:00 AM T 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 66; Tmin: 43. A few sprinkles this morning (missed out on yesterday evening's rain in North Boulder/lower foothills). Still looking for a decent amount of rain (snow mixed in overnight?) for tomorrow evening, but not nearly as much as last week, maybe 1/4"...
9/14/2011 7:00 AM 0.03 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 65; Tmin: 37. Late evening rain lasts less than 10', then clearing and cool.
9/15/2011 6:50 AM 0.67 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 46; Tmin: 39. Heaviest rain from about 6pm to 9pm MDT, about 0.09" since 1am MDT. Still drizzling this morning.
9/16/2011 7:00 AM 0.05 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 51; Tmin: 41 (since midnight). Clear overnight, but breezy to keep it 'warm'. Forgot to mention earlier that we had the first visible snow of the season above about 12K this morning.
9/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 60; Tmin: 44. Evening sprinkles added up to a generous 0.01". Breezy and cloudy this morning.
9/18/2011 7:00 AM 0.06 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 54; Tmin: 41. Rain shower in mid-afternoon (done by 4:30pm MDT), breezy and mostly clear overnight. Feels like fall...
9/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 59; Tmin: 42. Clouding over in PM, but no rain. Still breezy.
9/20/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 63; Tmin: 46. Occasionally breezy last night, biggest ET rate in a week. Cool-down tonight might finally give us a freeze and/or a flurry, but both are not likely.
9/21/2011 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 58; Tmin: 30 (first frost of season, more than one week past the average date). Enough rain drops to fill the gage to 0.01". Some sprinkles fell around midnight when temperatures had dropped into 30s, but I could not make out any flakes. Even rushed out my snow board, but nothing on it this morning. Clear and calm this morning, temperatures hovering below freezing past 7am.
9/22/2011 7:00 AM 0.09 T M 0.0 M Tmax: 49; Tmin: 29 (early in morning, flushing out afterwards with 36F by 7am MDT). Thunderstorm in early evening (around 6:30-7pm MDT) that, according to a neighbor, brought some graupel in addition to rain. Nothing left by 7:30pm, so I don't think it was hail.
9/23/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 64; Tmin: 46 today (37 yesterday morning). Indian Summer in the full sense of the word (post-freeze). Looks warm and dry into the foreseeable future.
9/24/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 67; Tmin: 47. Fall-weather in full swing...

9/26/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 69; Tmin: 49 (occasionally breezy from the west to keep the night warm).
9/27/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 72; Tmin: 44. Indian Summer continues. Smoke in the air this morning, hopefully just someone trying out their woodstove...
9/28/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 68; Tmin; 51 (would be a high Tmin record for the date if it does not go much lower tonight). Breezy this morning and sunny.
9/29/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 72; Tmin: 39. Overcast this morning, obscuring the divide above treeline (~12K). Should be a 'cool' day, but no rain in the offing for several more days.
9/30/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 51; Tmin: 34 (right after midnight, rising temperatures by sunrise, hitting 43 by 7am MDT). A cool break, almost another freeze.
