My inexpensive (and not deadly accurate) thermometers registered low temps as follows: My two electric thermometers -38degrees, my WeatherYourWay (mercury) thermometer -36degrees, my hardware store thermometer read -41degrees. It's pretty chilly out. Not much wind though and livestock survived the night. Increase in total snow depth may be due to drifting more than actual snowfall. |

Warm afternoon temps, windy conditions during the night and drifting are considerations for all measurements today. Rain guage probably missed some of the wind blown snowfall during the night/early morning. Measured 1.3" on snow board before the wind came up at noon yesterday, am estimating that we got at least 0.2" since then so came up with 1.5" total, but that is an estimate. Snow board measurements this AM were anywhere from 2.5" to 4.0" but it was drifted snow. I'm sure there wasn't that much new snow that fell. |

Storm started with a ten minute graupel shower before turning to snow. Can't really explain large difference in rain gauge precip. and new snowfall melted core except that there was quite a bit of wind in the early part of the storm. It's possible the rain gauge missed some of the wind driven snow or that the snow board had a little drifted snow on it however, snow board measurements were fairly consistent. |

Patchy fog. There are a few exposed areas starting to show bare ground but right in this area I'd estimate that we are still around 98% snow covered. SWE measurement this AM is probably slightly low because there is a layer of ice right on top of the ground at the bottom of the snow layer that is very difficult to accurately include in the core sample. It is probably at least 1/4" thick. Got as much of it as I could. |

The actual rain gauge measurement was 0.14" but I know that wind caused the gauge to miss some precip. On the other hand, the snow board core of 0.42" seems too high. Decided to report an average of the two so, 0.14 + 0.42 = 0.56", 0.56 divided by 2 = 0.28". That seems reasonable when compared to the Total SWE for today. I drove in yesterday's snow and I know it was very wet and very, very slick so there was a good amount of water in the snow. New snow measurement right at the end of the storm was 3.0". I am reporting a trace of total snow on the ground since we are now less than 50% covered with snow but much of what is left in drifts and ravines is deep. In my back yard I have a large drift that is still well over 30" deep in some places. We have had minor flooding this week (our well house flooded and our garage) and so have others I've talked to. Sump pump sales are going strong here. There is a lot of runoff water around us. |

New snow light and fluffy. Yesterday afternoon there was a little graupel mixed in with snow. At 4:15 PM measured 0.3" of small, almost perfectly round graupel on snow board. At 5:10 PM there was another graupel shower, this time large sized (0.2" diameter) and not so round. This graupel shower turned to snow after about 5 minutes. Snowfall didn't last long. Measured amount on snow board but still had 0.3" depth. Some graupel and snow in second shower was probably absorbed by water from melting graupel that was on the board from the first shower. Snow shower and graupel quickly absorbed into wet ground in most areas. |

We had trace amounts of misty rain early and late in the day and had a short snow shower at 9PM that melted as soon as it contacted the ground. Thin layer of frost this morning on vegetation and wood railings. The frost may have dashed our hopes for lilac blossoms that were about a week from blooming . . . we'll see. |

Impressive lightning storm from about 7:30PM to 8:30PM. Lightning flashes were occurring every 3 to 5 seconds during the most intense part of the event. After 8:30PM the strikes came less frequently but were still occurring until after 10PM. |
