Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/1/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The promise of another perfect autumn day. Clear skies. Light dew.
10/2/2010 7:00 AM 0.09 M M M M Rain awakened me at 3:55am. A look out the window at wet pavement indicated that it had been in progress for a while. At obs time north wind was pushing low stratus fractus out of the area.
10/3/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies. Light dew.
10/4/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M H6 cirrostrati. Heavy dew on cars. Light, patchy frost on some roofs.

10/12/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Tenth consecutive day of zeros. Heavy dew. H5 cirrostratus to the north and east. Horizons to the south and west hazy. Clear overhead. Soon it will be too dark to identify clouds at 7 a.m.
10/13/2010 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M All talk and no action. Much bluster, noise & lightning between 6 & 6:30am seemed to promise more than 0.01. Maybe heavy, rain-scented atmosphere means more later. L7 stratus fractus.
10/14/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly clear skies with a few little H1 cirrus strands. Haze on western horizon.
10/15/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear skies.
10/16/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear sky. Light dew.

10/25/2010 7:00 AM 0.18 M M M M A little rainfall during/after obs time yesterday. Most of gauge catch fell later, through the early night hours with T-storm. Clear skies at obs time today, but the air feels sodden.
10/26/2010 7:00 AM 0.84 M M M M Rain hitting windows awoke me at 4:55am. Thunder first heard at 5:27am. Robust south wind brought up 60 degree temp by obs time. Humidity makes it feel balmy. Streak of clear sky to the west.
10/27/2010 7:00 AM T M M M M I thought I may have heard a little rainfall during the night, but it didn't rouse me enough to record the time. Gauge shows a trace. Clouds rapidly clearing out on a south wind.
10/28/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Low overcast moving fast on north wind.
10/29/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The frost is on the gauge, the cars, the roofs and, yes, the punkin.

11/22/2010 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Very light on-and-off rain, starting sometime yesterday afternoon, kept the concrete wet all day. Large raindrops hitting my south windows awoke me at 6:42 this morning. Lightning & thunder commenced at 6:50 a.m. For all that, I still had only 0.01" in the gauge. Rain then started falling with real enthusiasm at a quarter past obs time, to be recorded in tomorrow's report.
11/23/2010 7:00 AM 1.32 M M M M Thunderstorm yesterday starting around 3:15 p.m. Partly frozen rain and one poor dead fly in the gauge this a.m. Small, low, raggedy gray cumuli scattered on all horizons.

11/26/2010 7:00 AM T M M M M No actual accumulation in the gauge, but I know we had a T of rain because of the light drizzle at obs time yesterday and also at around 8:30 a.m. while I was loading salad & dessert into the car to take to family Thanksgiving. Completely clear skies this a.m.

12/1/2010 7:00 AM T T M T M First flurries of the season started around 3pm with more in the evening. A few flakes falling at obs time. Low overcast.
12/2/2010 7:00 AM T T M T M The system forces me to lie by not allowing me to report 0.00 in the gauge with new snow on the ground, but the fact is, THERE IS 0.00 IN THE GAUGE, very likely due to strong wind, AND A SMATTERING OF NEW SNOW ACCUMULATION down between the grass blades. The system insists I either report a T in the gauge with snow on the ground, even though there's nothing in the gauge, or 0.00 in the gauge and 0.0 snow on the ground, even though there is snow on the ground. Did anybody follow all that? Very light flurries at noon yesterday north of Ottawa between Earlville and Somonauk; at 12:10pm in Somonauk; and on and off, early-to-mid afternoon in Sandwich. Heavy overcast here at obs time.

12/12/2010 7:00 AM 0.39 0.3 M 3.0 0.61 Yesterday afternoon's rain was followed by overnight snow, leaving a beautiful striation of clear ice under a layer of snow in the gauge. Wind gusts out of the north kept snow boards clear and created varying depths of snow on previously cleared concrete, along with clear patches. New snow depth an average of measurements divided by percentage of ground covered. Snowing slightly at obs time. M2 nimbostratus overcast.
12/13/2010 7:00 AM T 0.4 M 3.0 0.62 Occasional wandering little flakes passed through yesterday from obs time through late afternoon, as close to not snowing as snow can get and still be snowing. Don't put much faith in my new snowfall measurement. Wind kept the snowboards clear, but there was new accumulation on the previously-cleared sidewalk, in patches. I took an average depth from that. Clear sky this a.m.

1/19/2011 7:00 AM T 0.2 M 1.0 0.24 A mixed bag yesterday. Afternoon varied between slight drizzle and heavy mist. Fog set in a bit past 5pm. 1/28/2011 7:00 AM 0.14 1.8 M 3.5 0.47 A T of snow yesterday a.m. sometime between 7:20 and 8:40. The larger snowfall of the day started sometime around 10:45am and ended between 2:30 and 3pm. At obs time today, the sun was blotted out by our tiresome old friend M2 altostratus.

2/2/2011 7:00 AM 1.89 13.1 1.89 15.0 2.47 Used core value (above) instead of actual gauge catch (1.18") because snow was blowing horizontally across top of the gauge much of the time. Measurements consist of snow, primarily, with sleet that fell from about 8:05pm till about 8:40pm. Measurements affected by some drifting, although my snow field appears relatively level. No longer snowing at obs time; L6 stratus cloud cover. See 3 significant weather reports entered yesterday, 2-1-11.

2/11/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 10.5 2.24 Transparent overcast.
2/12/2011 7:00 AM T T M 10.5 2.38 Light snowfall started at 11:40 yesterday a.m. I don't know when it stopped; around 2pm, give or take. No accumulation. More light snow fell, leaving a trace of accumulation, sometime between sunset and 9pm. At obs time, moderate frost and mostly clear sky with H5 cirrostati on SE horizon.
2/15/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 4.5 1.44 The snow is gone under the trees, leaving about two thirds of the ground snow-covered. The depth of remaining snow varies so much, I can give you any measurement you want as long as it's between 0.5 and 15.0", but taking everything into account, from no snow to a little to a lot, I'm calling it 4.5". That's my best average guess, and I found a core to match that. We have frost and varied, thin stratus cloud cover.
2/16/2011 7:00 AM 0.09 0.0 M 2.5 0.87 Rain last night. We maintain about 1/3 visible grass plus 2/3 snow cover of varying depths. Thin ice sheets on top of puddles. Snow core made of grainy ice crystals similar in texture to coarse sea salt. H5 cirrostrati on the horizons, clear overhead.
2/17/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 1.5 0.54 The only snow remaining on the ground is the drifts and shovel piles, but that's still a notable amount that's going to melt. They still range from 0.5" up to 15.5" deep, for an average depth of 7.5". They cover about 1/5 of the ground, with 4/5 of the ground bare, so 1/5 of 7.5" gives us 1.5" of total snow still on the ground. SWE was taken from 1.5" core. Solid L6 stratus cloud cover at obs.
2/18/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M Remaining snow consists of scanty patches of shovel piles and drifts, not really measurable -- maybe 1/25 ground coverage. Looks like the last of that will melt today. The ground is saturated. Scattered areas of M5 altocumuli.
2/19/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M T M I should not have predicted that the last little bits of snow drifts and shovel piles would melt yesterday. They did not, but remain minimal, about 1/25 or less ground coverage. Mostly sunny at obs time.
2/20/2011 7:00 AM 0.74 T M T M Awakened by distant thunder at 4:05am. Light rain mixed with big, sloppy snowflakes appeared to have recently started. By 4:25am rain was coming down hard with distant thunder. Still raining lightly at obs time with puddles in the streets and also on the grass. Still have about 3-4% ground coverage of old snow, and now a trace of new snow deep down between the grass blades and edging the sidewalks. Sidewalks covered in slush globs, some circular, others amoeba-shaped, 0.5"-1.0" in diameter, roughly. Gauge contained mainly water but with slush globs floating on top. M2 alto- or nimbostratus overcast.
2/21/2011 7:00 AM 0.71 0.0 M T M Rained most of the day yesterday. The remainder of exceedingly old, tiresome, icy snow on the ground now gives less than 1% ground coverage. Not raining at obs time today. M2 altostratus overcast.
2/22/2011 7:00 AM 0.10 T M T M Light rain on & off throughout yesterday, turning to brief snow flurries shortly before 9pm. Snow recommenced at 6:55 this a.m. Hazzardous thin ice layer below T of snow on sidewalks, streets, snow boards, etc. Ice on the gauge. Grass crunchy. I expected ice accretion on lilac branches: Can't see it, can't measure it, but I can feel very thin ice coating with my fingers. M2 nimbostratus overcast.
2/23/2011 7:00 AM T T M T M Light snow continued from obs time yesterday until roughly 9am. At obs today, M2 altostratus overcast.
2/24/2011 7:00 AM T 0.0 M T M A trace of rain at 3pm. Another between 7:15pm & 8pm. The usual M2 altostratus overcast at obs time.
2/25/2011 7:00 AM 0.03 0.4 0.03 0.4 M Snow fell sometime overnight. Precip measurement, above, taken from core rather than gauge. As evidenced by snow stuck to the north side of the outside of the gauge, angle of snowfall limited gauge catch. For a delightful change of pace, mostly clear sky at obs time with scattered L1 cumuli to the SE.
