Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/1/2010 12:00 PM 0.00 0.0 M M M Things are drying out around here. Its suppose to be the fall rains that aren't coming?
10/2/2010 8:00 AM 0.36 M M M M A quiet fall rain. No high winds or lightening and thunder. No standing water anywhere. The water deprived plants are turgid again.
10/3/2010 7:19 AM 0.14 M M M M current temp is 45 F. We had .14" of rain last night. No lightening and thunder. It was a gentle rain , no outbursts. Our first frost of the season is predicted for tonight. Bring in the tender house plants. Temperatures as low as 35 F expected. Lake Michigan should moderate it. Our usual first frost comes either at the last week of Sept or the first week of Oct. Lately it has been moving into October. We usually have about a month of weather with no more frosts or freezes. Halloween generally is still barely above freezing with rains. Expect some freezing and a little snow at any time.
10/9/2010 10:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No precipitation for the past 48 hrs.
10/13/2010 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No precipitation for the past 48 hrs. Even the wild plants such as violets are showing extreme stress. Some of the leaves of forbs are indicating water problems. This has been the driest October, so far, in the past 65 years according to the Chicago weather reports. It is cloudy and the forecast had been for rain last night and today. None last night.
10/16/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain has fallen in the past 48hrs. The driest October in over 65 years continues to roll on. We've had lots of clouds rolling off lake Michigan but, still no precipitation. The flowers and small shrubs like hydrangeas need water every few days. They perk right up but then in a few days droop. Indications are that the ground is extremely dry. Even heavy watering doesn't last. The dry surrounding areas draw out the moisture i pour on. It doesn't look good for the plants that need to develop or increase root growth through the winter months especially in the fall and spring. There may be a lot less blooms next spring unless we get some rains before the freeze up
10/18/2010 12:30 PM 0.00 0.0 M M M No precipitation over the past 24hrs , again. The smaller shrubs and plants are showing a lot of stress. Some of the older trees are quickly turning and falling. The colors aren't as vibrant and don't last very long. The dry surrounding ground sucks away any water that is metered to the plants so I have to water more frequently now than in the spring and early summer. As I mentioned earlier this is the driest October in 65 years and continuing to bulk up the record. Rain is forecast again. But, it will probably move out over the lake again.
10/19/2010 6:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Again, no precipitation in the past 24hrs. The temperature is 40 F. We haven't had our first freeze yet. The house plants that spend the summer outside are still out. We have had a warning or two but no frosts. The windows with the storm windows open are beginning to accumulate moisture by morning on single paned inner exposures. The energy savers are doing fine. We've usually had our first frosts by now and then about a month of warm Indian summer before winter starts to set in.
10/21/2010 12:30 PM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain again today. The farmers are way ahead of bringing their crops of corn and soy beans. they are both dry enough to pick without having to dry them further. We are on track to establish a new dry weather span for October.
10/23/2010 10:25 AM T M M M M Just enough to wet the stadium seat at the football game last night as I went to the car to get the rain coats. Rain is predicted for today and Sunday. It is overcast and the elements appear ready rain. Hold your breath.
10/24/2010 8:32 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No precipitation again today.60F very light breezes but, it is overcast. There is rain in the forecast. The finish coat of paint on the North windows is dry enough to install the storm windows for winter and caulk around them. Just in time for the goblins.
10/25/2010 6:35 AM 1.06 M M M M I slept through the storm. My wife said there was lightening, thunder and some wind. Lucky for me, I had my hearing aids out. I didn't hear a thing. Winds in the 30's and 40's with gusts into the 60's is predicted over the next few days. Again, Lake Michigan will decide if we have rain or not. We live in the rain and snow belt on the Southern shore of the lake.
10/26/2010 12:00 PM 0.26 M M M M The big wind hit us this morning about 8.15. We had a tornado warning as one hit just across the border in Illinois, Near Peotone I think. By a little after 9AM they sounded the all clear. Lake Michigan drug the worse of the winds up over the lake itself. We have a couple of more days of warning about the high winds still coming. Before the winds, not as great as was forecast, we did get .26" of rain. Hail... In the account for yesterday, Monday, I mentioned the rain of over an 1". I slept through the rain but, my wife said we had some hail along with the rain. I don't have a hail pad. We don't get much here. Again I think the lake saves us most of the time.
11/5/2010 5:15 PM T M M M M I've had trouble this week getting into my entry. It worked fine today. We had a trace of rain yesterday and a light non accumulative snow today.
11/6/2010 10:45 AM 0.26 M 0.26 M M We had a trace yesterday. Last night we had a nice wet soft snow of about 3" everywhere. No wind to mix it up and cause drifts.
11/8/2010 9:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M It has warmed above freezing and the three inches of snow is gone. Several more nice days projected.
11/12/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No precipitation in the past 24 hrs. We do have a heavy fog. Visibility is less than 250 ft. I can see the house in the lot behind us but, the next street over is obliterated. We haven't had one like this for a while. The temperature is about 45F.
11/13/2010 8:45 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The predicted rain didn't come again. We are suppose to get some again tonight.
11/15/2010 12:57 PM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain or snow last night
11/17/2010 7:15 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We do have frost on the windows of the cars. The temperature is 35F. It is overcast but, no rain or snow.
11/18/2010 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No precipitation to measure again today.
11/19/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No precipitation again today. Current temperature is about 26F. There was a light frost on the windshields again this morning.
11/22/2010 7:30 AM 0.02 M M M M Just a little rain. quite warm at 60F and windy. No anemometer to measure the speed. Our temperature is scheduled to drop into the 30"S for highs this weekend.
11/23/2010 7:30 AM 1.09 M M M M The morning rain was about .20". The afternoon and early evening fall filled up the rest of the total. We had a 27F reading last night. The snapdragons and dianthes were still blooming. I'll see if they survived another frost? The birds are visiting the feeders more frequently now. If the weather stays below freezing I'll have to put the electric heater in the bird bath. Once we get a snow cover they appreciate sand along with the seeds and water. We are scheduled for a week of near freezing weather and below.
11/24/2010 11:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M currently 32F. The temperatures are expected to stay between the lower 20's and middle 30" for at least a week. Some snow is possible later in the week. We are still in a moisture deficit. The recent rain did fill my containers for watering the indoor plants for at least a month or so to come. The city water browns the leaves when used exclusively.
11/25/2010 9:30 AM 0.40 M M M M We had two separate rain falls. Both gave up about the same amount. The temp. is 40F. Very little wind. It's overcast and gloomy out. Although everything is damp there are no puddles laying about.
11/30/2010 8:00 AM 0.74 M M M M Yesterday we .00". It was overcast and rained later in the day and through the evening. we had thunder and lightening. The total from about 4Pm on till now was .74". The current temperature is 40F with an overcast sky. It appears we will get more rain or if the temp drops snow.
12/1/2010 9:00 AM T M M M M There was no rain/snow yesterday. Today we have a trace. The temperature is around 25F
12/3/2010 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No precipitation again today. We have forecasts of varying amounts of snow tonight through Monday. Besides the continental snow moving in from Mn and the Dakotas we are on a "Lake Effect" from Lake Michigan. This is not to be taken lightly. The snow of "67" was suppose to be light covering at best. We had varying recordings of from two to over 3 feet. In highly industrialized areas this is catastrophic. The roads glaze with an ice covering immediately. The first accident blocks any further egress. Everything can remain blocked for several days. Thereafter, every alert of lake effect snow is considered very carefully. Today our schools through out the area are deciding if any athletic events will be held through the weekend.
12/4/2010 5:00 PM 0.20 M M M M We had a nice covering of snow while we were in Chicago at our grandsons wrestling matches. The melt equaled .20 The Lake effect snow is coming after midnight will report in the morning and add this total with it.
12/6/2010 8:00 AM T M M M M The Lake effect snow was further East than my location. I don't know if any was West of us? We did get a Trace of flakes. More is expected as we are getting a few now.
12/7/2010 8:00 AM 0.03 M M M M I didn't measure the snow but the melt was .o3" It was a soft fluffy fall with the flakes about 3 to 4 foot apart but for a long duration.
12/9/2010 5:30 PM 0.00 0.0 M M M No hydrology today. No snow, rain etc.
12/10/2010 9:00 AM 0.08 M M M M The snow was drifted and so I just melted what was in the container. There was a nice light fluffy cover. Snow is predicted, lake effect from Lake Michigan. It's missed our area for the last two passes. Both East and West have received more than us. The Eastern sector which is considered the "Snow Belt" has received a lot more already this year.
12/11/2010 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No precipitation. Temperatures are rising above 32F for the second day in a row. Frost is all over everything.Still no snow/rain and we are in the snow belt.
12/12/2010 2:40 AM 0.37 M M M M Snow and rain and snow again. We are right near the freezing mark of 32F. The snow is lake effect this time? The storm will reach us soon and the two snow falls will merge. We are suppose to see a drop in temperatures over the next couple of days. the birds are filling up at the feeders. I melted everything together.
12/13/2010 6:00 PM 0.53 M M M M The high winds make even a guess at the depth of snow impossible. The snow from the storm coming out of Mn and Dakotas joined the lake effect off of Michigan. Our county is under a state of emergency. It's the ice under the snow across the roads that is causing so much trouble. The people inexperienced at driving in these conditions just panic. We are a crossroads area and get drivers from all over the country. School was closed so I didn't have to go out since yesterday midday. The temperatures were near freezing. and are now dropping into the near zero area. The snow is suppose to have moved East but as of yet it is still snowing. We've had very few electrical outages. They have only been momentary ones. Did you see the collapse of the dome in Mn. One of my old classmates said they were using water to wash off the snow and caused the collapse. I didn't see that on the news. Did you? The owners are whining about wanting an open arena. My buddy says they got one now. No need to build a new one.
12/16/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No precipitation again today. this is the second straight day of no moisture. The temperature is below freezing so there is very little melting.
12/17/2010 5:00 PM 0.03 M M M M light snow last night.
12/18/2010 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No moisture events over the past 24hrs.
12/21/2010 6:00 PM 0.13 M M M M my melted snow gave .13" today. Yesterday, Monday we had no precipitation until late which is in this first reading.
12/23/2010 9:00 AM T M M M M Just a few flakes. No real accumulation to measure. Our current temp is 28F. We have about a 5" blanket of snow. Promise of more snow. We should have a "White Christmas
12/25/2010 12:00 PM 0.09 M M M M Light snow gave up .09" of water. More forecast for tonight.
12/26/2010 11:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No snow or rain to report. Very little air movement. Thermometer is right at 32F.
12/27/2010 9:00 AM T M M M M Trace of snow. temp is 27F. Wind is almost nonexistent.
12/30/2010 12:43 PM T M M M M Not any precipitation to speak of. Weather has warmed above freezing. I can see melting snow. Nothing spectacular.
12/31/2010 11:00 AM 0.68 M M M M We had some thunder and lightening with our rain. It was mostly a fairly gentle fall. It has been an almost steady easy rain. the winds have been pretty calm. All the snow that fell if off the ground. There are only plate sized lumps that are the result of piling by shoveling. These aren't even in most yards. To still be there , they are in protected areas. The current temps are expected to fall from a high of 50F today to below freezing tonight.
1/1/2011 8:45 AM 0.17 M M M M Light ice on the bird bath. None in the pails or pond. Again, just a light lazy rain. The .17 did surprise me.30F with very little breeze.
1/4/2011 10:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No precipitation to report.
1/6/2011 9:33 AM T M M M M There is a small dusting of snow. I'll integrate it into tomorrows report. The snow is falling and will probably be in the one to two inch vicinity if the wind doesn't shift and cause "Lake Effect" from Lake Michigan.
1/7/2011 9:25 AM 0.03 M M M M The melted snow yielded .03". The current temp is 20F. There isn't much of a breeze. Temps are expected to drop. and stay lower for the coming week. It's about time for the" January thaw." Then we have a week or so of bad weather then it moderates. Usually by Valentine's day we get rain. The back of winter is pretty well broken. We occasionally get a some snow into the middle of April and then spring arrives.
1/9/2011 9:00 AM 0.06 M M M M We are on the Western edge of the Lake Effect snow belt of Lake Michigan. We had a light covering of snow while 4 miles east they had 6 ". In South Bend and East it was over 18 to 26". Western Michigan was also inundated. Our .06 melt looks paltry.
1/10/2011 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No snow or rain last night.
1/11/2011 9:00 AM 0.03 M M M M We had .03" of melted water. It's beginning to snow more heavily now. We have a heavy forecast of over 18" over the next several days.
1/12/2011 11:00 AM 1.15 M M M M We had a little over 14" of snow overnight. It melted down to 1.15". Easy shoveling as I got to it before it was walked on or the ploy threw any on the driveway. More is forecast for the next several days.
1/16/2011 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No precipitation for two days...
1/18/2011 9:00 AM 0.23 M M M M Soft rain falling. We are barely above freezing with sub zero temperatures forecast in two days. We still have a full cover of snow on the ground and it should remain intact as the temperature begin to fall. The birds are not feeding heavily enough to portend much snow.
1/19/2011 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M An extremely light snow shower came down. left only a flake here and there. Temp is 23F: wind is indiscernible. Both snow and weather near and below 0 degrees is predicted in the next couple of days. It will be the first time this winter it got this cold.
1/20/2011 12:30 PM T M M M M Just a dusting of snow. It doesn't even form a solid cover yet. Living in the snow belt of Lake Michigan could change that in minutes. Temp. is in the low 20's with a very gentle breeze. Still not uncomfortable.
1/22/2011 8:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Light dusting of snow. Temp is 18F with a slight breeze. Snow is still falling thinly over the landscape. Doesn't appear it will accumulate much. However we are just a few miles south of Lake Michigan of the Western edge of its snow belt.
1/23/2011 9:00 AM 0.02 M M M M It's about 20F with almost no breeze. The flakes that fell were large and fluffy. Not much water in them. The cooler weather should moderate and return to near and lower 30's average highs later this week.
1/26/2011 9:00 AM T M M M M The melted snow didn't cover the complete bottom of the measuring unit with water. Snow is expected this evening.
1/27/2011 11:00 AM T M M M M Not enough to measure or melt. A very light dusting.
1/28/2011 9:00 AM 0.17 M M M M There was about 2" of new snow. The temperature has moderated temperarorly to the high 20's. There are still lots of snow laden clouds overhead. Probably heading for the snow belt to our East?
1/29/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No snow, rain, hail or other precipitation to report today.
1/30/2011 11:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Nothing to report in precipitation. Forecast is for 3" followed by 4" more and then an additional 12". We'll see,
2/1/2011 7:00 AM 0.12 0.6 M M M The snow was about 6/10 of an inch. Forecasts for heavy snow up to 24" in predicted in the next day or so. Schools are being let out early beginning at noon. Some factories are closing down third and first shifts. Along with the storm coming out of the west, we are faced with the probability of "Lake Affect" snow dumping a few more inches on top of that. Head lines harken back to the "Storm of 67." The weathermen are static. Incumbent politicians are panicking. Folks are just settling in for another Chicago storm. With the high traffic the roads quickly ice over. We have a huge population of Southern folks who can't seem to get the knack of snow. The highways quickly get blocked with accidents and stalled vehicles. It should be an entertaining mid week crisis. (edit: new snowfall entered as 6.0". changed to 0.6" due to comment above. P.G.)
2/2/2011 9:30 AM 1.01 M M M M The high winds made any meaningful measurements difficult at best. some areas were over two feet high and others showed bare ground. There were measurements of everything in between. My tube had about 8" of seemingly heavy snow. It melted down to just over an inch. When I shoveled off the drive and the sidewalk the top layer was light and fluffy. The bottom was a lot denser. On the driveway it was really wet on the bottom or last last shovelfuls. Like the layer depths the depth determined its denseness. Its continuing to snow at a much reduced rate. The bird seeds need to replaced frequently. The birds are really packing it away. They are willing to dig into the snow. They still continue to bath in the heated bath as well as drink almost as often as they eat. They are a lot less testy as long as I keep a fresh supply in scattered areas and levels.
2/4/2011 5:15 PM 0.47 M M M M I didn't measure the snow that fell last night and very early this morning. I was busy with a few things and the snow melted while I was away. The melted snow did measure .47 We are in for some cooler weather. No more snow is forecast for the immediate future. I'll be at the wrestling regionals for individual positions for to go to semi state. If I don't measure early, it will be like today and evening read
2/5/2011 4:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No added precipitation to report today.
2/7/2011 9:30 AM 0.09 M M M M we had a covering of light snow. It melted down to .09". The temp is near freezing and the roads, sidewalks and drives are getting slushy. They aren't melting enough to send down water down the storm sewers at this time. I've snapped a couple of twigs on the ends of the maple limbs to catch the first alert of the maple runs. Nothing yet. Our main focus on that is around the first two weeks of March. However it does last as long as 6 weeks under proper conditions. Vermont and Canada can rest easy, we're a long way back in production compared to them.
2/8/2011 8:00 AM 0.24 M M M M About 4" of new snow has fallen. it is continuing to fall. The flakes are large and billowy. The tube yielded .24" of water. We are scheduled for an extreme downturn in temps. It should be near or under zero for several days. By the weekend it will be in the upper 30's and lower 40's. Like they say, "If you don't like the weather here in the Chicago area, wait a minute."
2/9/2011 11:00 AM 0.06 M M M M We had a nice snow fall yesterday that stopped early in the day. It wasn't forecast. Probably a Lake affect phenomenon. They are unpredictable. The melt yielded .06" of water.
2/14/2011 9:30 PM 0.00 0.0 M M M A large part of our snow melted off today. Some patches are showing in the lawns and the gutters along the curbs are running with water. The two more days of above freezing forecast should eliminate most of the snow cover remaining. I'll check my maple to see if the sap is running tomorrow. We'll return to the sub freezing highs in a couple of days.
2/21/2011 8:00 AM 0.62 M M M M A steady drizzle since yesterday after noon has produced .62" of water. The temperature is slowly moving back to near 32F and we are expecting the rain to turn to snow today and tonight. between an inch and an inch and a half is forecast. Our snow cover is gone except in a few isolated islands where it had been heaped up to clear parking lots etc.
2/22/2011 5:00 PM 0.14 M M M M Our snow yesterday was soft and fluffy. There was virtually no wind. The flakes were enormous at times. I didn't go out and catch any but, it appeared they were often falling as a cluster in bunches up to several inches across. When it was all over and I melted the tube snow it yielded .14" of water. The cover quickly covered over with an icy crust. There was some melting today. We are still 100% covered.
2/23/2011 9:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No increase in precipitation over the past 24hrs. There is a thin cover of snow, perhaps 1/2", with a glaze of ice covering almost 100% of the area.
2/25/2011 2:30 PM 0.15 M M M M The snow is mostly melted again. Lots of grass showing through everywhere. The gutters are running with melt off. I didn't measure the snow depth of the new fall. More snow is expected soon. We are about to set a new 100 year plus record for snowfall. I'm not impressed because the politicians move the official measuring area when it suits their plans. We live on the southern end of Lake Michigan and a movement in any direction of only 5 miles changes the snow fall and temperature readings drastically. This change is not only day to day but year to year or Century to century.
3/21/2011 10:00 AM 0.06 M M M M Been away for two weeks. The total accumulation in my station is 2.18" of water.
8/8/2011 5:00 PM 0.25 M M M M This up until 8:00 this morning.
8/9/2011 8:00 PM 0.46 0.0 M M M Rained around 8Pm last night. No rain noted up to this time afterward.
8/12/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain for the past two days.
8/14/2011 8:00 AM 1.15 M M M M about 4:16 it started to rain. Within seconds hail began falling also. Before they melted they covered the ground about an inch apart. None of the crystals were over 1/4" in diameter. None of my leaves on my plants were torn or shredded. There was no apparent damage, dents etc, on my vehicles parked outside. Because of the infrequent hail here, I don't have a hail board. It didn't appear be much of a rain. I don't know if it rained last night but, I was surprised by the 1.15" this morning in my measurement.
8/16/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Again today no rain. This was the coolest day of this summer. KWH usage was only 11. No need for A/C. It looks more nice weather in store for us. No problem getting to the yard chores now.
8/18/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another nice close to Autumn day. highs in the mid to low 80s. The lows around 60. No rain, hail or snow to report.
8/19/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain. Overnights temp. in the upper 50's. Predicted high about 85F. Light rain predicted for the next two days. Good possibility it will pass by.
8/21/2011 8:00 AM 0.27 M M M M The duration postponed out annual golf outing by about an hour and a half. A gentle rain not much more than a mist for about a half hour was followed by a steady rain with lightening and thunder that lingered about an hour.
8/24/2011 8:00 AM 0.21 M M M M The rain fell between 11:00AM and 1:30 Pm. A few drops fell intermittently thereafter buy didn't register any further accumulation. It stayed mostly overcast the rest of time.
8/25/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M no rain again today.
8/27/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another nice clear day. temperatures are moderating nicely. No precipitation again.
9/1/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yesterday had 0.14 or rain. Nothing today. The temperature climbed into the lower 90s. and upper 90s are expected tomorrow. I am starting to experience a moisture shortage in my garden and some shallow rooted brush. Even a good watering didn't help by the second day. I had to water again. My bird bath is being used at an unprecedented rate. No major problems yet.
9/2/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hot and dry again today. Upper 90's and no additional rain again. More on tap for today. beginning to show stress on the plants in the gardens. trees and bushes doing OK. Cool down coming in a couple of days. No rain fall predicted. Had to water the wild violets under the trees. they are my sentinel plants.
9/3/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain again last night. Temperatures forecast to be in the 90's again today. This afternoon about 3:15 PM we had a nice easy shower pass through. It ended about 5:30 and left 0.70". More to come. The temperature reached about 85F starting tomorrow for the next week the highs will be in the lower 70s and the lows will be in the upper 50s. Here at the lower end of Lake Michigan around the equinoxes we get really vivid colors on clear days. I feel it's because of the angle of the sun's rays hitting the atmosphere and diffusing in a certain way. It really came to my attention after I started to learn to paint scenes. Can't wait till the end of the month.
9/4/2011 8:00 AM 0.88 M M M M 0.71" fell between about 3:00 to 5:00 PM yesterday afternoon. After 11:00 PM and by 8:00 Am this morning another 0:17" additional rain was gathered in the collecting tube. The streets are dry already. There is no standing water. The walk to the gathering tube through the lawn's grass didn't wet my rubber garden shoes. We may be a little shorter on water than I had begun to suspect. I'll keep a closer eye on the plants for the rest of the season.
9/5/2011 8:00 AM 0.06 M M M M The rain was so gentle overnight that it didn't overwhelm the tree's canopy in the yard. Spaces on the patio etc were still bone dry. No puddles in the street. The sky is mostly overcast. To the west, over Chicago, the incoming clouds are extremely dark. It appears we may get some additional rainfall by or before noon.
9/6/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Coolest night of the season. I had a 48F reading at 7:50. The sky is clear and no rain last night. The lawns are looking good and the gardens are starting to shut down. asters and some other fall flowers are now in full bloom. The staghorn Sumac and the Elderberries are prime for harvesting. The apples and pears are ripening. the grapes are ready for wine making. The tomatoes are running towards their end. Time to save the heritage seeds from them. Collected some others from the walk in the woods. The leaves haven't started changing so we still have a little time before color burst. Our first frost in about 3 weeks away. Then it will warm for a month and then comes the cooler weather precluding winter. We'll see how the global warming screws that up this year?
9/8/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain today (This morning, that is.) We are having a light rain now at 2 PM. No accumulation yet. It's suppose to be the back end of the Eastern seaboards problems. It's moving from East to West. Coriolis will put it back on path as soon as one of the systems to the west advance East. Our temperatures have been in the low 50's overnight to the low 70s in the daytime. KWH usage is dropping dramatically. The ground is still pretty dry. Dig down and its dry. The shallow rooted plants are showing the stress. the deep rooted trees and prairie flowers aren't paying any attention. We are forecast for some rain overnight. See you in the morning.
9/10/2011 8:00 AM 0.10 M M M M The rain,as it was, was dropped throughout the day in little driblets. It all had time to soak in. This followed the .11 we had the day before. The decrease in temperatures and the little additional rain has helped the plants look a little better lately.
9/15/2011 8:00 AM 0.17 M M M M Temperature dropped into the high 40's last night. As of 9:00 it still is only 49F. We are finally finishing off with the smoke from the Mn. fires about 600 miles N/NW of the Chicago land area and here in NW Indiana. as the high pressure system moves East carrying the smoke along with it.
9/17/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We set a record for the last 85 years of three high temperatures in row of less than 60F. Some slight rains are expected later. Some of my sentinel plants are showing stress from lack of moisture.
9/18/2011 8:00 AM T M M M M Temp. overnight was again below 50F. We're having our October temps early. We are scheduled for some rain in the next couple of days. The plants are showing some signs of lack of water stress again. Everything is showing a real slow down in growth, maturation etc. My wild fall Asters are in full bloom. The grapes should be picked in a day or two. Time for wine. Time to start closing down the gardens for fall.
9/19/2011 8:00 AM 0.62 M M M M Rain started around &pm. it never was really heavy that I saw. It continued after I went to bed at 11.00PM. I have no idea how much longer it lasted. No puddles in the street or yards. We are on heavy clay. The plants perked up nicely. The temperature has moderated into below the usual fall ones for this area.It was 60F last night as has been the norm lately. the daytime temps have been below 70F for a while. Set a new record for coolness.
9/20/2011 11:43 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another cool night. Lots of dew and some fog but nothing in the tube. High temperatures for the upcoming week are again lowered.
9/21/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Last night was above 60F for the first time in a while. We are expecting mid 70's today. Then it will cool off again. We are having nice covers of dew in the morning but no rain again today. We are averaging at least 10f below average right now. My wild asters are in full bloom.
9/23/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain again today so far. Some is forecast for the next couple of days. The plants are invigorated from the earlier rains so far. The unseasonably cool weather has helped greatly. It is still below 50F at nearly 9PM.
9/24/2011 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain again this morning. However the sky is overcast. Again we have morning temperatures below 50F. The high isn't to by much more. rain is expected. Tee Hee fooled us again?
9/25/2011 8:00 AM 0.06 M M M M It's 51F and cloudy. We accumulated .06" of rain water last night. We were forecast to get about ".74". Maybe we'll get some more today. Our fall temps are great for the later part of October. It is a nice respite after the summer's excessive heat. The plants are beginning to look great again. Some scattered trees are beginning to change into the autumn colors. Can winter be far behind? Time to start readying the gardens.
9/26/2011 8:00 AM 0.62 M M M M Nice gentle rain. There are no puddles, it all soaked in. With the cool weather, only in the 50's the plants don't need so much water. My KWH usage was way down overnight also. This month will be a record low usage for me.
9/27/2011 8:00 AM 0.24 M M M M Another nice gentle rain. Its continuing to fall and we are now having some runoffs into the sewer systems from the roads. The overnight temps were under 60F great for next next month but a little below for Sept. However after the record hot summer, who is complaining?
9/28/2011 8:00 AM 0.92 M M M M The rain has been intermittent over the past 24 hr. We have a huge low pressure stalled over the Great Lakes. It is slowly moving Eastward now and we are catching the back of the rotation. It's too over cast to see the clouds but they should be rotating southward from our perspective. Our overnight temperature was near 50F. We are setting record colds for temps since they started taking them in the Chicago area. Our ground is becoming sated with water. We haven't reached full saturation as it is still peculating down. albeit much slower now. I hope to drive past the river sometime today and see how its level is. It is continueing to rain very gently. They say the low pressure system will pass us today or early tomorrow and the rains will cease. I'll keep an eye on the gauge.
9/29/2011 8:00 AM 0.19 M M M M Temperature is above 55F already. Our Low pressure system is moving east ward. The clouds are moving directly East. We must be on the bottom of the system. The .19 was soaked up quite rapidly leaving no puddles. However the high humidity and low temps has everything pretty moist looking. The plants love it. This low pressure system has left us much cooler than most of the rest of the US. By Wed. we should be out of the system entirely and begin moving into seasonal temps again. A few trees are turning. Most them are in parking lots etc that stress them. A few in the scattered wooded areas are a little slower to react and haven't reached much color yet. We should be a lot brighter in about three weeks.
9/30/2011 8:00 AM 0.16 M M M M 40+ mph winds made accurate measurements a little iffy last night. The rain was quite intermittent. The potted plants were moved inside the patio walls and none were tipped over. 48F temps feel a little cooler with the high winds still blowing. We still have a few more days of cooler weather forecast. We generally have our first freeze before next week is ended. Then after a night or two it warms up for a month of Indian Summer.
