Storm total melted & liquid precip was:0.83". Storm total water equivalent precip from 8" gage was 1.15". Snow changed to rain about 1400 on the 25th and then to briefly to freezing rain and a small amount of sleet before changing to snow about 1615 EST. Storm total snow accumulation before change to rain was 5.5" After changing back to frozen precip it accumulated 0.6". Snowfall measurements based on use of 5 snowboards. W6014 wind vane froze in NNE position beginning about 1700 EST. Believe anemometer cup rotation slowed because of frozen snow during evening and night of 25 -26th. Wind vane broke free from ice about 1400 on the 26th. |

Major precip event began as snow and changed to rain at 1310 on the 28th. Snow frequently moderate to S+ during late morning and in early afternoon before change over to rain, but temp was 1-2 F degrees above freezing so didn't stick initially. Light snow began roughly 2000 on the 27th and ended after midnight. Accumulation of 0.1" |

Snowfall beginning about 1130 on the 2nd was moderate at times, but because temp was 37 initially at the precip's beginning it took a long time for it to stick. Evaporative cooling caused it to fall to 33 and there was a brief period of accumulation before it ended. |

Note: CWOP Station CW6596 Brooklin School yesterday about 1500 EDT switched from failed wind sensors whose arm was north pointing to the backup south pointing set of wind sensors. The anemometer of the alternative has a higher wind speed threshold for both the anemometer and wind vane than does the failed wind sensors.
About 1000 sun briefly visible for the first time since at least Wednesday afternoon. Fog has dominated since about 1930 on Saturday based on visual observations (since Wed AM)and RH measurements by CW6014 Brooklin Naskeag1. |

8" gauge = 0.07". Another 4" gauge on a small pipe located ~11' west of 8" gauge measured 0.07". A 3rd 4" gauge with no funnel located 4' to the west of the 8" gauge and a rock to hold it upright= 0.01. Latter low QP because the rock heated up in the sun and with the open orifice caused large evaporation this AM.
Again with last evenings T-storms the highest wind was measured as or after the rain ended. Highest 5 min sustained recorded at 1945 was 14 mph with a peak gust of 27 mph about 1943 EDT. from the SSW. Again after the precip ended beginning at 1902 EST wind shifted to the NNW, N and NNE with a wind speed of 7-14 mph with gusts from 11-15 mph until~2100 when it decreased to under 6 mph. Shift to the Northern quadrant was probably after the pre-frontal trough passed. The cold front didn't pass until 0055 EDT.

CWOP Station CW6342 Sedgwick Ridge, ME's wind measurements have been failing. Particualrly in the past 48 hours the wind direction was sometimes reading North when the wind wasn't from that direction and the wind speed at times has been registering zero when there was considerably greater than 0 speed. After about 1445 EDT on Saturday 11th the measurements were restored to decent ones with the installation of a new set of wind sensors. The new sensors are located about 6 ft lower on the mast than the existing ones, but are still about 5-6 above the highest point on the residence. When we are able to obtain help binging down the 20 ft mast new wind sensors will be installed at the top of the mast. |

Not surprisingly, there seems to be a pretty good correlation between slightly higher wind speed when the wind is coming directly or indirectly off the water and stabilizing the temperature rise or causing the temp to fall. |

8" gauge = 1.48"; 4" front yard gauge = 1.43"; CW6014 = 1.25". Brooklin School CW6596 located 3.1 mi NW of here recorded 0.76" using a VP2 tipping bucket rain gauge whwhose funnel was clear of debries. Note: For the 24 period ending at 2359 EST on the evening of 23 Sept. CW6014 recorded the lowest average wind speed of the year of 0.8 mph and probably well before Jan 2011. It is possible lower wind speeds near the starting threshold weren't well represented since the anemometers have been on the tower for at least 2 years and may have had their starting thresholds rise was more salt and dirt from the atmosphere accumulated on the bearings. |
