With all of the excitement, I didn't measure until 8:30 am. AT that time, the temp was about 27 degrees and with a ruler I measured 2.5" of snow. This melted down to .17" of water. The snow is very dry - it shrank a lot before water was released from the melting snow.

Some of the flakes have been just HUGE and so pretty. This latest 1.5" turned into .23" water. At this time, I put the rain guage back outside to collect the freezing rain. At time of reading, the guage read .2" In the morning of the 11th, I took a sampling from the table top which included all ppt that has fallen during this storm. It's compressed since yesterday, but still measures 4" with a ruler. The melted core sample came in at .72"

At 6:42pm we had our first hail storm for the night (two more to follow). The hail was about .75" in diameter. At 6:44 the hail quantity increased as the size of hail decreased. The hail was over by 6:48 and the rain came down hard. The water was collecting in puddles in the back yard - not draining at all. We had two more boughts of hail. We never lost power. There was over .75" of rain by 7:00pm.

I looked to the west and I could see the trees in the distance moving, yet is was still where I was. I watched, thinking it there was going to be rain. Then I headed up to the house. It took about two minutes, but the wind (no rain) arrived in a huge swoosh. Several more waves of this intense bursts of wind came through. The clouds were dark and threatening, with lightning in the distance, but we did not really get any rain from it. Around 7:30pm I could feel a fine mist and around 8:00pm I could see the rain coming down, but it was very light. Someone to the S of us must have received a lot of heavy rain.

By 4:30, it was raining on the east side of Hwy 160. It started to rain close to 5pm at home. It didn't seem as intense of a storm at it was in Fort Mill. A handful of neighbhoors lost trees due to the wind.

8/9/2011 8:00 AM 1.20 M M M M Tried to write an significant wx report last night only to discover that we had lost the internet! Rain started at 8:11pm with big, heavy drops and wind. The skies had been looking very dark with lightning off to the West. Within 9 minutes, according to our digital rain guage, we had .29" and the rain was falling at a rate of 5.6 in/hr. At 8:24pm I went to my computer, with no luck of sending a report, and the rain increased to over 11 in/hr. Now, that didn't hold for but a moment, but it was still impressive! At 8:38pm, we had one inch of rain. That was one inch in 27 minutes. At that time, the rain let up to a "nice, soaking rain". At 9:30 we were at 1.09". The rain had stopped by 10:30 pm. The final reading this morning was from the cocorahs rain guage.

All three hail periods were within a one hour period. The larger the hail, the less that fell, the smaller the hail the more fell and covered the ground.
