Snow began without wind yesterday at 10AM, and by noon was at full blizzard conditions. Because of the winds blowing the snow around, it is difficult to measure accurately. However, my average of several depth readings is 14.1 inches of new snow. My guage was overfull, so I upended it and scooped out the snow at the appropriate depth and melted it down to 1.61 inches. Temperature is 23F at observation time, with a wind chill factor of 6F. Winds steady out of the NW in the upper 20s, gusting to 50MPH. The snow is predicted to stop around noon with the wind continuing into tomorrow. |

Yesterday's high was 42F, the first time we reached the 40s in 18 days. Never dropped below freezing last night. I would have expected more melting of snow than my measurements showed, only .3 inches. 39F and sunny at observation time, on the way to the upper 40s. |

Maybe Cocorahs can explain this report. I did my measurements in the same way in the same area of my back yard, but one of the readings is way off from yesterday. The total depth of snow was reduced .6 inches. That seems right. But the melted core increased by 1.47 inches. How can that be? Light rain began to fall just after I took my measurements. 48F and cloudy at observation time. It's a puzzlement. Due to a severe cough and cold, measurements taken 4 1/2 hours later than normal. |

18F and cloudy at observation time. No wind, no wind chill. Under a winter storm warning from tonight at 7pm to tomorrow at 6PM. Like the post-Christmas blizzard, this storm will intensify as two systems converge over our area: a killer storm heading up the east coast and a powerful storm from the west. However, unlike the previous storm, this will not have blizzard condition winds, only reaching 30 to 35 MPH. This storm is expected to deliver about the same amount of snow, ranging from 12 to 18 inches. The blizzard dumped 16.2 here over a two-day period. Also, unlike the blizzard, this forecast contains no qualifying words like "maybe" or "could." All forecasters seem definite in their predictions. |

Wind out of the NW at 3MPH. Last night's low was 35F. Yesterday's high was 47F, the warmest recorded since last December 1. Snow began yesterday at 8AM, and by 2PM we had 4 new inches. Then rain, freezing rain, and sleet fell until about 8pm, wiping out most of the morning accumulation. 29F at observation time with wind from the NW at 7 MPH, making the wind chill 21F. High yesterday was 44F. The inch of snow we received late Wednesday and early Thursday totally melted yesterday by 1pm. For the next ten days we're looking at high temps in the 40s and low 50s. What happened to the 73 we reached a week ago today? Spring can be fickle. |

It's been a pretty dismal Spring. Pretty, because there's been a lot of blue sky and sunshine. Dismal because it's been so cold. Our high yesterday was 44F. Wind chill was 35F. Might reach that again today. Not expected to get into the 50s until next Monday. Saturday's high won't even reach 40 and snow is predicted. It's 33F, wind from the W at 9 MPH, wind chill 27F at obervation time. These are mid-Feburary temperatures and it's almost April. |

Goodnight, Irene. According to local TV, our rain from Hurricane Irene has ended. No serious flooding in our yard or driveway. The rain began as showers through the day with a total of .40 inches at midnight. The heavy rains began shortly thereafter. Irene made landfall in our area at approximately 3AM. Local TV says the winds will continue until 7pm and they are blowing steadily at 60 MPH now with gusts to 71 MPH. No apparent damage in my area, except for one large tomato plant. Lost power at 4:33AM for about 10 seconds. Lights have been flickering for the past hour. Fortunately for us, when the storm was first tracked here it was 60 miles to our East. Then directly overhead. When it went through, the center was 80 miles to our West. We were spared. |
