We did get another shower around mid to late afternoon.

Today's measurement is necessarily done on top of the frozen layer left from yesterday's lesser amount, so the total snowfall since Saturday morning would be an inch or two more than the new snowfall that is being report4ed now. That may go to explain the water equivalent that fell in the gauge

Looks like East Tenn geography trapped enough warm, dry air in Valley to stop the snowfall accumulation that "everyone" had predicted. P.S. if anybody at COCORAHS is listening, different people seem to be putting the various snow measurements in different places; maybe it's time for a refresher on what numbers go where? This is not new, but rather a recurring observation. For example, sometimes it's obvious that the raw snow depth is being put where the melted amount should be. Another one is confusing new snowfall and total snow. Data accuracy may be affected by these types of error.

(Plus, of course, plenty of work for plumbers, too.)

3/1/2011 7:00 AM 1.98 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 high Monday 68, overnight low/7am temp 37; heavy rain, mostly in early p.m. (1.8" by mid-afternoon) on top of prior rain this week led to fast run-off which caused high water in ditches to cover roads in many places - example nearest here was blockage of Houser Road in a sharp curve just north of Riverbend subdivision. It was just possible for one car at a time to crawl around the outside of that curve (which is a little bit higher than the inside, so the water was somewhat shallower.) and hope that nothing is coming from the opposite direction, especially when heading South. As this is the main road in and out of the Peninsula, a lot a people use this road. The other way in and out probably had even more water problems due to steeper terrain, at least for the roadway itself, that is. I was out during the worst part of it and experienced pea-sized hail in Powell at approximately one o'clock.

News has reports of large number of tornadoes yesterday which include loss of at least one life in Tennessee. We had tornado warnings here and radar reports as close as Seymour and Greenback but heard no local sighting. Note: rain total includes some melted hail but I don't know how much due to power outage here for most of the night that started right after the severe hailstorm. P.S. storms continued off and on until after 1 A.M.

All this picked up by one or more of the storms from one of the many scenes of destruction Wednesday and carried here by the winds aloft just like the hail. TV news says many people are finding such things, some of it identifiable as belonging to someone as far away as Georgia and even Alabama, and a web page has been set up in Facebook for pictures and documents, at least.

The ground is so wet here that I'm almost afraid to walk on it, let alone mow it with our lawn tractor. However, I had to walk on it in order to pick and/or rake up the myriad of sticks that fell from various trees, especially the Sawtooth oak, so that it can be mowed before all this moisture turns it into a jungle. My CoCoRaHs records show 10.79 inches for this month and an incredible 26.13 inches so far for the year!

If we had to take the first damage estimate (from a roofing contractor who stayed on the ground) we'd be stuck with a hail-damaged roof, but fortunately we got a second estimate from an insurance company adjuster who actually climbed up to get a better look and found a lot of seriously penetrated shingles, so he marked it & took pictures & wrote it up as a claim. Chances of a severe T-storm here last night were greatly exaggerated even though they did get some in the far northeastern "corner" of Tennessee not only last night but also again this morning, with resulting local flooding in some cases due to heavy downpours. I understand that there were also some hail & straight line high winds that caused problems with downed trees.

Since the April 27 storms, we had an inch recorded on May 4 and about 0.2 inch cumulative since then, which is not enough to keep everything healthy much longer.

Oh, The Weather Channel says 97 this afternoon and the heat index is expected to reach 105 or more, so it's best to stay out of it or else drink plenty of water. Speaking of water, May rainfall here was only 1.80" and all of it came it doses of less than one inch.

There was heavy rain South and West of us about a few dozen miles, but how does that help? I didn't know, but apparently we received some much moister air than we've had recently, as the relative humidity today is up to 84%. High Sunday 95 (airport tied record of 96), low overnight/7am temp 68. Looking for a muggy near-record 93 today, so everybody stay cool and hydrated and please consider praying for rain. We have now had 8 days in a row of highs over 90 F. at this location, and only a trace of precip during that time period. The 7-day forecast on TV does not promise any relief just continued 90+ highs and small chances of maybe some isolated showers somewhere in the viewing area. We need a break.

Of course, there is one channel that says the streak should reach 19. From the data one of the stations' research showed, the most unusual thing about this streak is not its length, but that it came so early, all in the Spring. Maybe there's something to Global Warming after all?

Over the past 5 weeks, we have had less than one inch of rain, and only once was it even close to half an inch. They say shallow watering is bad for plants, but that's what Nature has been giving to us - topped off with a very unusual pre-summer heat wave. We had to re-plant our beans (don't ask) so I guess I have to go water them now they're up in only 5 days.

In addition to the usual wind damage, heavy rains last night caused flash floods in some areas, and some roads are more like canals in Venice, Italy.

We keep a close eye out for problems in the garden, but not so close on bushes, etc., so this rain came at a very good time. Forecasts are calling for good chance of more rain today, possibly extending into tomorrow as well. A little bit of fog in the air this morning but it's not reducing ground-level visibility that I can see. NOTE: after checking Maps, I see we got a lot more rain here than anyone else around has reported. All I can say is that we were right under T-storms (had to be more than one) for about an hour or so with heavy precip for most of that time without any real let-up. On a possibly related item, our power was out for a couple of hours starting just before the rain hit us. Also, in case there is any doubt, my main gauge reading was confirmed by two (2) other backup gauges located a distance apart, so this was not just a freak occurrence affecting only one of them, but a real event that included all three (3) measuring locations.

Gutters filled up fast in both events and overflowed for at least a little while; we also had a lot of puddling on the ground, so both were good "soakers" and then some. Not much wind either time, so no known storm damage.

Predicted 95 high, but area pm t-storms could cut that. Heat index forecast is for 105 to 110, so drink plenty (lots) of water if you must be outside. You can sweat off several pounds/pints of water in just a couple or so hours out in this heat, and the loss of that much vital moisture can start to affect some essential organs, such as the kidneys and even the brain, making heat stroke become more likely.

Of course the Relative Humidity had to be way on up there, but I can't say for sure how high it was without an RH gauge. We're pretty close to the lake/river, so our humidity is likely somewhat more than the airport's reading. Today should be more or less the same as yesterday, other than a slightly increased chance of some precip later on. The best chance for rain soon will be Sunday/Monday. NOTE: Here's a good Question of the Day, Why/How is it that it has been so much hotter up North than here? That seems like the weather is turned upside down!

Radar showed it originated in the mountains to our South but left headed to our northeast. Fog this morning between us and the Smokies but no noticeable effect on visibility here in our neighborhood at least. I was coming through Bearden when the event started, and it seemed like more of a downpour there, so they may have gotten even more rain than here, as TV reports said some other areas did.

TV news says that the official rainfall amount at the airport was only .03". I'm afraid this precip won't last long with 93 predicted today and up to 97 tomorrow and the next day, at least according to TWC as of this morning. Thank goodness we have had over 5 inches of rain so far this month, so the soil is hydrated.

Not a big difference, but we'll take it! Flip side of the coin, however, is that while drier air cools down more easily, it also heats up more readily, which is why predictions are for 96 or 97 today instead of the low 90's we've been having.

It's not the first time he's gone out on a limb, so to speak. In fact, he's almost proud of it!

Soil has cracked open down the middle of our garden already, so we clearly need a good soaking precip. For what it's worth, TV8 weekend weather person (?) is predicting we'll get 1.5 to 2 inches by Monday. I certainly hope that she's right.

It was a welcome "soaker" bringing needed moisture, since there was little runoff besides roof & pavement. In other words, we are grateful we got what we did.

Best chance of precip will be over the weekend, natch, but I won't complain at all.

Other than the rain, humidity levels are going to stay down, with the heat index calculations much closer to real thermometer readings.

My interpretation of that would be if the signs say 15 miles per hour then don't go any faster, even if you have to gear down and/or use the brakes to do it in some cars and it seems like crawling.

Highs in the mid-80's today, slowly climbing to 90 by mid-week, lows mostly in the 60's. Hurricane Irene missed us, but it is dropping torrential downpours with 75 mph winds on NYC metro area now. More than a foot of rain fell in parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania and it has killed 8 people so far. If the eye makes landfall in NY as still a Category 1, it will apparently be the first such in over a hundred years, since 1893! We sure could have used some of that rain.

TV meteorologist's computer models predict a total for this multi-day event of over 3 inches for the area, with some localities possibly getting twice that much.

As it is, this is probably some sort of record for the date if not the month, but that will have to wait on NOAA who keeps records only on a calendar day basis, midnight to midnight, or so I have been told. For the event total, so far at least, I've recorded 7.31 inches of rain since the remains of T.S. Lee first reached here Sunday afternoon. Fortunately, the rain here has been mostly of the steady, moderate variety, allowing most of it to be absorbed instead of causing runoff problems. Of course, it probably has helped that the ground was very dry and thus able to soak up a lot of water. We are thankful, of course.

Lee hanging around. Considering the dry spell we went through, it's not that I mind the rain, it's just that the rains we got earlier have now made the grass grow, especially the weeds, and it's just not safe to try to mow this hilly yard when it is wet. I already have the mower up to the highest setting to prevent killing the dry grass, so I can't set it any higher. Maybe it will dry out by tomorrow so I won't have to worry about how I can be sure to get it all done before UT's football game against Cincinnati kicks off Saturday at 3:30 pm; it apparently will have a national audience on ESPN-2. GO VOLS!!!

Amazingly, radar showed ex-T.S.Lee still had some circulation up over Ohio yesterday. Gradual warming trend over weekend, 80's next week.

One brave soul is calling for a high of 90 tomorrow before it gets here.
