I think the difference between the rain gauge reading and the snow board core was due to wind causing the gauge to miss some of the precipitation early in the storm. Kind of a tricky call on precip. report. Light showers of shiny, diamond-like ice crystals? from a mostly clear, sunny sky yesterday morning. I assumed that it might be "drizzle" since there was fog visible down lower in the valley. NWS station in Kremmling referred to it as light snow. Sometimes people refer to something like this as a frost storm. At any rate it was falling from the sky so I reported a trace. |

We are located just far enough west of the Continental Divide that upslope systems usually don't produce much precipitation for us. So far this storm seems to be following that same scenario. Often the snow depth starts increasing just a few miles east of here--Byers Canyon is frequently the dividing point between having snow and having very little snow.

Snow showers occured off and on most of the daylight hours yesterday but that snow melted as it fell. A snow/graupel mix that did stick fell after sundown. That is the amount reported as new snowfall, even though I know more than that fell. Interestingly, the rain gauge SWE and the new snowfall core SWE this morning were both 0.05". Either there was not much moisture in yesterday's daylight showers or the rain gauge missed some of the snow. I checked the rain gauge at about 2PM and there was only a trace of water in it at that time, so maybe just not much moisture fell during the day. |

I estimate that 20% of our property is covered with an average of 2.0" of snow. 0.44" X 0.20 = 0.09" total SWE. Our entire property faces south, so we have less snow cover than north slopes. I would estimate that north sides of slopes in this general area might have an average of 5.0" on them (I have not measured--it's private property). Had a light rain shower in the AM that left 0.01" in the rain gauge. At 5:38 PM we had a cloudburst with rain, hail, lightning and high wind. It only lasted 9 minutes but was very intense. I thought we might loose some trees from the wind but only had some garden fencing that blew across the yard. The cloudburst left 0.26" in 9 minutes and I'm sure the gauge missed some of the precipitation because of the wind. At times the rain/hail was coming in nearly horizontal with the ground. Filed a significant weather report minus the rain gauge amount. There was too much lightning to check it for several minutes after the rain stopped. Surprisingly, the only damage other than the fence was some light leaf and flower damage. |
