Morning sunshine and still quite nice, then increasing, lowering clouds and colder during the afternoon. Precip began as very light rain somewhere after 4 PM with temperature in the 40s. Changed over to snow before 8PM. Only about 0.04" fell as rain before switching over. Heavy wet snow with 3" by 10 PM on the snowboard and slush accumulating on pavement. Began hearing snapping trees around 10:30 PM but not as bad as we thought it might be. 0.48" of water content already by 10:30 PM. An additional 0.51" (some uncertainty as snow stuck to rim of gauge -- but I took duplicate samples of all measurements and they didn't vary that much. 0.99" was an average with range from 0.97 to 1.03" Snow density decreased overnight. Several moderate sized branches broke overnight on our trees. Glad we moved the cars over to our neighbors to avoid our trees. One 6" diameter limb probably weighed 150 pounds and one still up on garage roof. Snowing lightly and still accumulating at 7 AM Did not think to take a snow board SWE measurement. It would have been about 0.95" SWE measurement on grass less as there was some melting at ground level with warm earth below. |

Snowed in small flakes most of the morning. Roads mostly clear or a little slush early. High temperatures only in the low to mid 30s. Clouds cleared around sunset with immediate formation of patchy ground fog. We are still out of power and trees remain laden with snow. Tree branch fell and bounced up through our laundry room window. Cat was shocked. No injuries and got the window boarded up. Thankful for our wood stove and candles as the low dropped to 8 or 9F with heavy coating of hoar frost. |
