Light rain started ~4 PM in the afternoon. Not sure when it happened exactly, but but snow was coming down at 6:30PM and by 7:00 it was accumulating on the grass. I took off the funnel and measured 0.05 in the gauge. I didn't have time to do a core sample this morning and I'm not exactly sure where I would have done it. Snow measured 8". The gauge was filled halfway and also had 4" of snow on the top. It melted to 0.72" Bringing the total to 0.77 |

I'm estimating the new snow because what was in the gauge at 5PM was slush. Snow in places around the yard had either stayed the same or increased and the temperature throughout the day was near freezing. We had one branch down yesterday morning from the maple tree. I actually heard it crack and fall when I was checking the gauge yesterday morning. When we came home, there were numerous branches down from both elm trees on the east side of the yard. Many of these were in the 6" diameter range. It was ok that there was school otherwise we might have been trying to make snowmen under falling branches :(
And we had fog this morning - not at our house, but as I drove to work. And there was rime on many bushes and the top of the snow as well - at least around the CIRA building. |

Precipitation started at ~6:30PM last evening. I think it was mostly snow flakes, but they melted on contact with the cement. There was 1" on our front porch by 8:30PM. Although it is not windy this morning, there was evidence of north/northwesterly winds: - snow on that side of the trunk of trees and in open areas, snow drifted to the south and southeast. The gauge had snow on the top and as best I could, I pushed straight down with a lid and brought it inside to melt. That had 0.60" liquid. I measured snow depths: 7.5", 8", and 10". I took a core in an area that had 8". The 8"core had water = 0.70. (I added water to melt and then subtracted it. it is amazing that both these values came out to 0.x0) This core measurement and water equivalent is what I am reporting - it seems most representative. |

I finally got to walk around the yard and take a few measurements of remaining snow before the next snow. There was 0-2.5 in the front yard, which gets more sun, and 2.5-3.5 in the back, north facing areas, so a good estimate remaining is 1.5". I threw some leftover ice in a spot in the front on the 12th of December. The spot is not in the sun much during the day. I noticed that quite a bit of the ice is still there. It's that time of year with long cold nights. |

With warm cement/ground, the snow near the ground was very wet. It was very breezy and the gauge had a melter water content of 0.48. I took a core in an area that had 6.4" of snow and snow near the ground was "dry". Some areas had 7-8" of snow and others had 5". This area seemed representative and I used this to report. It melted down to 0.54. |

It snowed lightly yesterday morning and heavier in the afternoon. It was melting on many surfaces that had been cleared of snow. The air temperature was in the upper 20s most of the day. This morning, the precip in the bottom of the gauge was melted and refrozen - with snow on top. I have yet to get a snow board and I noticed that snow was melting on the surface of the board I had out there, so I didn't use a core from there. The 0.1 was what fell in the gauge. The 2.4" of new snow is estimated from what fell on "packed" snow since yesterday. The 6.5" total snow remaining on the ground is an average of less snow in the south part of the yard, and more snow on the north sides of the yard. |

A light rain started yesterday evening at ~6:30 PM. There were trace amounts here and there before this later in the afternoon. I'm thinking it was mostly a light steady rain throughout the night as it was wet under the spruce trees out front, but not soaked as in the trunks of the trees were not wet. At 6:30 this morning, it was a more moderate rain. Between when I measured at 7AM and 9AM, we received another 0.2" rain, so I'll have at least that much to report tomorrow morning. It's been so dry, and we've only watered a few things in the yard - this steady, light rain is a blessing. |

A thunderstorm! Started seeing lightning and hearing thunder ~ 8 PM to the south and southeast. It slowly moved closer and rained between ~9:30 and 10:00. Helped clear the air of smoke and cool all surfaces down a little. I was able to open my windows and use the fan all night sans smoke. No rain since 3 PM yesterday when I got back into town. See comments from yesterday in terms of reporting. From what is on the map of neighboring stations, this is an ok way to go. I was away for the weekend and had someone checking the gauge, but not at 7 AM. Lots of rain since Friday and the pumpkin plant arms grew ~ two feet! The tomato plants grew 6"+ on all sides - but I noticed this morning that they didn't look quite as bushy and I saw deer prints in the soil :( |

I came home at 5:15ish to a yard covered with hail that was ~0.5" deep. The average size hail was pea size. I did submit a hail report yesterday. So at that point, I had 1.0" liquid rain in the gauge and about a quarter of the funnel filled with hail. That melted for an additional 0.18; the rest of the evening, we got 0.01. The hail on the grass did not melt before 10:00, but was melted by this morning. There was fog forming in the evening over the cool ground. The hail off the roof collected in piles in places and there was some t=of that still remaining this morning. |

0.01 in the afternoon yesterday, the rest in the evening and possibly overnight. Very foggy at 7, although It seems like it was not quite as foggy a half hour before . Visibilities are under .25 mile. And of course dew on everything. |
