Yesterday saw sustained winds of 25-30mph and wind gusts reaching 40mph, with the rainfall beginning at sunset and lasting throughout the night, with a brief pause of wind and rain at daybreak, then at 8:30am the rainfall resumed with vengeance and a quick look at the radar indicates this won’t end anytime soon here at my South Tampa location today. The good news; the windy air hasn’t returned, at least not at the time of this report. So what caused this uncanny weather we’re experiencing right now? I haven’t a clue, and I’m still waiting for the climatologists and meteorologists to lend a rationalization.

After two anxious days of forecasts that promised everything from torrential downpours to all sorts of windy conditions heading this way, yet none of that forecasted weather mayhem took place here at my South Tampa location (thank God), then today began with sunshine and clear blue skies that first looked like weather from paradise at daybreak, then at 10:30 AM it turned into dark grey skies, gusting winds, fast moving clouds, and all the appearances of tropical storm weather, with some mist rain mixed in….all at a time when I thought the worst was over. Today began much like a repeat of yesterday, with a cool overnight low of 55°, followed with brief sunshine at daybreak that lasted until noontime, then an afternoon long cloud haze that kept most of the sun hidden from view, and a pleasant yet brief daytime high of 75° that felt much cooler than the day before. Despite the daytime forecast, today failed to meet expectations once more. After an overnight low of 66°, and on what is now the first day of Spring, it was yet another too warm-humid daytime high of 88° at my South Tampa location today. Breaking news: Statistically speaking, this past winter that just ended hours ago could go down as one of the warmest in more than a few years, with a mean winter low of 59.5° and a mean winter high of 77° at my South Tampa location this past winter. The overall mean temperature was 68.2° for this past winter that ended just past midnight. The summer-like daytime heat over the last 2½ weeks helped draw up the mean temperature even more.

And that cold front they’ve been talking about all week that’s supposed to be heading this way? There isn’t a cold front out there anymore.

Warmer than expected overnight, too warm during the daytime again today at my South Tampa location. Its as though we’ve gone from winter to summer without the once usual benefit of springtime temperatures….. Oh, and that cold front they keep saying is heading this way? Its merely dryer air, that’s all. Dry air merely cools off quicker during the nighttime, yet heats up quicker during the daytime. It’ll still be 80 something degrees during the daytime….without feeling so warm.

With much fanfare yet little rainfall and not a clue of what was first advertised as a cold front, the overnight low at my South Tampa location was 69° during the predawn hours, followed with sunshine and breezy air at daybreak, and an eventual afternoon daytime high of 83° today. This is merely dry-warm air right now. Nonetheless, it’s also refreshing right now, too!

This has been a challenging tropical storm-rain event with constant pounding rainfalls, flooding everywhere, and lots of eerie gusting winds, and then when you thought it might be ending, it just keeps coming back with vengeance all over again. And it’s only a tropical storm! Then during the middle of the night, pounding rain and wind returned, causing lots of yard and street flooding that has no where to drain, leaving more than 3 inches of rain in my rain collector, and tree debris all over my yard, followed with yet another round of rainfall soon after daybreak at my South Tampa location today.

Unsettled weather prevailed today at my South Tampa location, with a daytime high of 90°, with dark clouds, breezy air, a lot of weather uncertainty forming out in the Gulf of Mexico, more uncertainty east in the Atlantic, and even more south in the tropics. This is a period of time over the next few days that’ll keep the meteorologists very busy.

After a steamy overnight low of 77°, daybreak brought the sound of thunder, the look of rain clouds overhead, and suddenly it was raining outside and the unending often gusting-blowing rain lasted all the way into mid afternoon, and now at the time of this report (4:40 PM EDT) 1.75 inches of rain has already fallen at my South Tampa location today, and the daytime high only reached 81°.

After an overnight low of 76°, daybreak brought the look of possible rainfall at any moment…yet little more than a trace of rain was seen, then as morning turned to afternoon, the sky looked much the same, yet with little more than .05 inches of rain mist on and off throughout the afternoon, and an eventual daytime high of 84° when the sun eventually broke through the sky a few times during late afternoon at my South Tampa location today.

Summer 2012 has had its ups and its downs, yet overall, there won’t be anything memorable. Plentiful rainfall, a milder September, and free from tropical cyclone strikes makes it O.K. for me.
