We have been having high winds with gusts up to 40MPH. Although there hasn't been significant damage there is a lot of self pruning on the trees. Mostly it has been dead fall. However, I did have some leafed out limbs up to an inch diameter in the yard that fell.
This morning the temperature was near 40F. It is not uncommon for us to have our first freeze no or until two weeks from now. We then enter a period of warm for another month. |

33F last night. No ice showing. Warming is expected with a high of the mid 60's later today. Salmon are running in Salt Creek. Grandsons are putting a lot of pressure to try our luck. I make them wait until it's at least 50F so I don't freeze on a river bank. At least we don't have to worry about Grizzly bears here in the Indiana disrupting our salmon runs. |

42F this morning. The temps are forecast to rise this week. The grasses in the lawn just love the weather. The salmon are running. We didn't get any yesterday. Was a lovely day in the woods by the stream.
Saw a late pair of hummingbirds at the feeder. Migrants. I hadn't seen any since Sept 23. I leave the feeder up until Oct. 8 to allow any really late stragglers a late meal of sugar water. The insects and blooming flowers are getting scarce. the hummers need all the help they can get on there way south. |

The temps reached 75F. The soil is still moist. Some of the spring plants are starting to grow. They send up the greens now and develop roots before the cold sets in. The Aliums are all setting up greens now along with the flowers. Our leaves are turning. In a week or two we should reach out full color. How mean of you to talk about the snow falling out there in the West. How much longer do you think it will be a reality here? One more thing for me to worry about? |

No moisture again today. Was up to 75F yesterday. The Blue gill fishing is doing really well. May try for Crappies later this week. The Grandsons are putting a lot of pressure to get a lot of outside events covered before the cold weather sets in. |

Along with the 1.76" of rain we had 60+MPH winds. There were only minor power outages scattered throughout the region. Nothing major. No more than a couple of hundred in any area of the grid at one time.
Rain is still falling but the winds seem to have abated. Lots of self pruning of the trees. The fallen branches are mostly quite small. |

First frost. Not expected in our area. Not forecast. Lots of tropical plants were out overnight.
No precipitation but enough frost on the aluminum benches at the local soccer field bleachers to make tiny snow balls. Would you believe that some of the Mom's got angry with the snowballs but not their husbands having their dogs in off limit places where their children were playing? It's a no dog and no no smoking but, they didn't say a word about them. |

However, here at the Southern part of Lake Michigan, the lake effect can dramatically change any weather situation in a matter of minutes. Warm moist winds from the south dropped .78" of rain. The temp rose to the mid 50s. We are still at 45F at this time. We are expecting the cold Northern winds to drop the temp at least into the 20's. No more rain is forecast for a while. 5 miles SE of us they had over 2" of rain. We are in the snowbelt/rainbelt of Lake Michigan. Any weather is possible. Generally not as severe as Buffalo New York on Erie though. |

We are still in a drought situation. The yard plants need watering. They gardens are struggling. Some trees are showing stress. I'll need to figure out how to gauge corn reduction. I walked by a field and closer inspection showed reduced yield etc. I don't know how to count this problem yet. |

The rain fall in our area was very scattered and intermittent. I drove to my class and it began raining. About a 1/2 mile into the rain it ceased. I was about 3miles from home and we received no rain. ny gauge showed ,,02". Later around 4PM i measured another burst of .13". Overnight I picked up another .03"for a total of .18". That was the Eastern front of the low pressure area of what remains of Isaac. The storm is passing over us moving East. We are in the eye and the outer edge is predicted to drop more on us this afternoon and later. I wold expect it to be scattered but possibly more because it is passing over Lake Michigan and should be picking up more moisture. |

There was a quick shower at around 7AM. The temperature is reportedly going up again today to near 90F By the weekend it is suppose to be in the 70's. The apple crops and some other fruits are at least 2 to 3 weeks ahead of schedule. The Puff mushrooms are going strong. They are producing a nice crop this season just about on time.. |

The rain last night was extremely soft and gentle. It is still falling. The water washing down the street isn't two feet wide nor an inch deep at the curb. most of the rain is still soaking into the ground. The ground was moistened by previous rains and is now absorbing the new rains rather than just letting it roll off the hard dry clay surface. |

Three more days of no rain although it was forecast. The wild violets are drooping showing lack of moisture. My Black Eyed Susan s are also showing drought stress. Our lack of rain is impacting any plants that aren't being watered. I'll be watering today even though light rains are forecast for tonight. Oh to have a job where I could be wrong most of the time and explain it I an act of God that makes my reports incorrect. |
