Totla is from light rain that accompanied snow flurries into yesterday evening, becoming all snow by about 10 p.m. The prediction of about an inch of snow sent a tsunami of panicked shoppers to ravage local grocers' shelves—apparently fearing that such an epic amount of snow would result in only dogsleds being able to get through—but their fears failed to materialize. As of observation time, no measurable or even visible accumulation, though light, almost sleet-like snow continues to blow around in considerable volume on an icy northern wind. Skies a nice battleship gray; temp. 21, RH 73%. |

Rain total is from strong thunderstorm line that blew through about 3:30 p.m. yesterday. No hail observed at station area 10 miles north of Scottsville, Ky. on Ky. 101; however, about two miles slightly northwest of us"as the crow files" on Ky. 1533 toward the Ky. 234 intersection, hail and evidence of much heavier rain were abundant. Hail had about 30 to 45 minutes of "melt time" in 50-plus degree temperatures and heavy rain before I knew of it and arrived on the scene; even then, some stones were still marble-sized. Therefore, it's not unreasonable to assume that in falling form they might have been pinball or even golf-ball sized. In addition, in that area, I saw fields flood that I'd never seen flood before—an apparent "heart of the storm." No serious structural damage or injuries reported. |

Somehow, two promising storm fronts managed to miss Allen County almost entirely yesterday, and we certainly could have used the rain. Mitch McConnell was here yesterday, two miles from my house, to dedicate the Port Oliver Recreation Area on Barren River Lake. For the last two years, it's been underwater due to spring flooding, and the Corps of Engineers wasn't able to get the lake back DOWN to summer pool until July 28 last year. This year, the Corps is struggling to get it UP to summer pool—still almost five feet short. Skies now mostly clear here, but dense fog shrouds the ground and my forests. Temp. 66, RH 87%. |

Still no rain since Father's Day. We now have fine dust that used to be soil flying and coating everything with each breeze, which itself feels like standing in front of a hair dryer. I heard one Iraq War veteran say the way this heat wave and dry spell felt brought back memories. |

Held my waterhose up in the air and sprayed for a few minutes, just so my 4-year-old would remember what rain felt like. Grass is beyond brown; it's gone, decaying. Even weeds are dead. Soil is a powdery quality you might expect to see out West. I'm from California originally, and the landscape here is looking more and more like that: Dry to the point of being gold in color dotted by the green of larger trees. Smaller trees are starting to show signs of leaf wilt. Despite plenty of watering, the leaves on my northern highbush blueberry plants are cooking in the heat. Its been so damn hot here that I met Satan on the sidewalk the other day. He said he was going home to cool off. Good thing I didn't plant popcorn—it would have exploded by now. |

Brief but feisty thunderstorm line began the show just after dusk, and intermittent rains added to the total. Lightning was almost incessant with the front of this line, which was more reminiscent of a March squall line than a summer storm. Total comes from a 5 p.m. storm front that rained torrentially for about 30 minutes, and moderately, then lightly, for about an hour afterward.
