Very impressive weather last night. NWS was dead on with timing and potential of last nights severe weather event. Storms rapidly formed around 6:00 PM over central Arkansas and raced northward towards southeast Missouri. This area was the far western side and the first area to be hit. Highlights: 50 MPH wind gust, 1.28 inches between 7:34 and 8:18. The lightning was breathtaking. There was hail in nearby locations but not here. And this is January? We wake to sparkling clear skies and winds between 20 and 30 MPH at times gusting to 35 MPH. |

Light snow began to fall at 4:58 AM and continued until 12:36 PM. The light snow tallied up to all of 0.2 inches of snow and .12 inches of rain. Only grassy type services were covered for a few hours. The remainder of the day was overcast. Strong gusty winds began around 7 PM changing from light southwesterly winds to strong gusty northwesterly winds as that arctic cold front pushes through Southeast Missouri. |

Light snow began at 10:30 AM to 3:00 PM. After 3:00 PM the snow was moderate to even heavy at times with flakes the size of dinner plates. Well, maybe not that big but never the less large and wet. The snow ended around 7:00 PM and turned to light freezing rain then about an hour later freezing drizzle. The temperature during this whole event ranged from 30.8 to 32.5. Even now at 5:00 AM the temperature is 33.3. My temperature graph is a straight line. Quite an interesting event in what has been generally a snowless winter here in SEMO. |

Cold front moved through between four and five this morning with a trace of rain. I measured a barometric pressure of 29.21 yesterday at mid afternoon. That is the lowest pressure since I have lived at this location. (nine years). This morning at 2:47 and again at 3:56 I recorded at wind gust of 49 MPH with numerous gusts over 40 MPH. Yesterday's high a tropical 76. What a great day. Warmest since last fall. |

Very severe weather just went through here in the past hour. Tornado warnings are currently out for southern Butler County and other counties to our north and northeast along the front. My location happened to be in about five mile gap between two severe storms. Just .23 from brief heavy rain and winds gusting to 40 MPH. When you love weather watching I drew the short straw on this one! There was another complex of storms which went through yesterday morning which also dumped .23. Maybe next time. |

Line of severe thunderstorms rolled through between 1:00 PM and 1:50 PM. The main impact was very strong straight line winds. I measured a peak wind gust of 59 MPH however my anemometer tower toppled so I believe there were gusts near 70 MPH. The Poplar Bluff Airport which is seven miles from my location reported a wind gust of 70 MPH and the police station in downtown Poplar Bluff 75 MPH. Needless to say my property is a mess so I better get to it. |

The relative humidity yesterday afternoon dropped to 14% by far the lowest I have seen in southeast Missouri. Extreme drought continues. Low lying vegetation is dead or dying. Meadows are brown and even a few larger trees are showing signs of stress. With temperatures well above 100 the next few days and no rain in sight for the next seven days this is turning into a nightmare for farmers and related industries. |

The 28th of June was quite an extraordinary day at this location in Southeast Missouri. The temperature climbed rapidly to the century mark by 11:00 AM then sored to 108° at 1:30 PM. The extremely hot temperature is only part of the story. Between 1: 30 and 2:00 PM humidity values which were formally in the mid-teens which is unheard of in this area to 29% by just after 2:00 PM. Even 29% is low humidity by Missouri standards. As the dew point rapidly rose the air temperature fell significantly from the high of 108° falling back to 103° by 2:15 PM which was in line with readings in southeast Missouri. At first I thought I might have a problem with my weather station however looking at other locations during this time frame I noted the humidity value of 16% at Doniphan which is roughly 25 miles my location. So, this location and the Doniphan location were reporting dew points in the upper 40s while other locations within a 50 mile radius were reporting dew points in the low to mid 60s. Perhaps someone out there who would come up with a reasonable explanation for this occurrence. For now even though I forecast weather for a living have come up empty! |

Yesterday ended a 17 day streak with no rain. Two thunderstorm cells moved overhead within an hour and a half. It was the first dent in the extreme drought which is causing a die off of thousands of trees in the Ozark foothills near Poplar Bluff. The temperature went from 105 to 74 within a one hour period. How often does that happen. Seasonal total still just 12.76. |

Severe storms rocked much of Butler County from mid afternoon through the evening hours. 3/4 inch hail was reported in Poplar Bluff along with torrential rain. Not at this location however as just the weakening outflow boundary spread weaker showers and thunderstorms into this portion of the county. |

Severe thunderstorms rolled through this location yesterday evening. Torrential rain along with 40 mi./h winds occurred between 5:50 PM and 6:15 PM. I recorded .59 in the first 10 minutes and ended up with 1.01 inches. Runoff was heavy but with a short duration of this event flood potential was less than it normally would have been. Lightning was spectacular with numerous strikes within two miles. |

Severe weather began at 6:40 and lasted a good ten minutes but in that time created quite a mess. 70 MPH winds came in two waves which took down three trees along with numerous other branches of various sizes. The wind toppled the tower with my anemometer on top so I can just estimate the 70 MPH gusts but the damage would suggest strongly this was the case. The top of my chimney assembly was also blown off. The unfortunate part was power and all cable and cell phone service as knocked off line for several hours so I couldn't report this event in real time. Only .23 was recorded do to the fast moving nature of the storm. |
