19 degrees this morning after a high of 48 yesterday. I live in the middle of a 10 acre hay field with the trees of Uwharrie forest all around the field. I have plenty of shade trees in my yard which help make it bearable in the summer. I have other thermometers placed around the yard and they always read the same as my weather station. I have heard several gunshots in the forest this morning so some freezers will be full of fresh deer meat for Thanksgiving. |

Most all flowers and flowering shrubs are in full bloom, especially the peach trees.I remember during the first two weeks in April, I believe the year was 1997, North Carolina had an Artic cold front move in and the temp dropped to 21 degrees during the night. Almost everything was wiped out including hardwood tree leaves which were almost grown. It looked like fall had returned until the vegetation re-generated in 2 or 3 weeks. |

I was praising the yellow and orange thunderheads in yesterdays report.It,s ironic but at 1:45 yesterday afternoon, one of those thunderheads developed overhead and after two bolts of lightning, big drops of rain began to fall and got heavier and heavier as the wind began to blow. Hail the size of pennies began to bounce off my car, the roof of the house and covered the porches and most of the lawn. A downburst with strong winds also occurred. The storm ended after 35 minutes. .52 inches of rain fell. We lost a lot of fruit from our trees but otherwise no serious damage occurred. That is an example of what those beautiful thunderheads can do. Also, .12 inches of rain fell during the night. |

In 1986, the temp rose to 110 , the highest I have encountered.If I remember correctly, the heat wave lasted 2 days and my air conditioner ran without stopping. High yesterday was 103, low this morning was 67. Living in a forest effects the temp very little. My walk to the mail box was a struggle even with humidity at 48%.I still must do it because that is the only exercise I get. I was just thinking about how dull life would be without Mother Nature. |

I can finally write a high temp that is under 90 (85) degrees for the first time in 2 weeks. A thunderstorm developed over us around 3:30 yesterday afternoon with three lightning strikes and 15 minutes of fairly heavy rain before raining out. We had .25 inches of rain. I thought it was all over. My computer showed very few showers. At around 7:30 I noticed it getting darker than normal and when I walked to my front porch, I couldn't believe how quick the clouds had exploded into a dark, dangerous looking storm. We were lucky. We had high winds (no damage),no hail and .64 inches of rain. Damage was reported in southern Montgomery County. |

Yesterday was the most odd day for weather I have encountered.The NWS issued severe thunderstorm warnings most of the day for Montgomery and surrounding counties.All day long there was a hole of clear skies over my house. In fact,the clouds I could see were moving so slow,(2 to 3 MPH ) it would take most of the day for the clouds to move across Montgomery County. Another odd occurrence was the direction the layers of clouds were moving which were all directions based on what little movement I could see.It's cloudy this morning and the clouds are barely moving. |

One year ago today, Irene made landfall on Cape Lookout. I was living in Havelock and damage was mostly to trees, fences and power lines. My rain gauge caught 11.08 inches of rain. I enjoy watching weather but I respect Mother Nature. She can send some brutal storms and all we can do is prepare. |
