Then a light rain started in early afternoon (1:30ish pm)that was off and on (no rain at 2:15pm). Then the rain started again at mid-afternoon with a down pour at 3:50pm. Our digital rain gauge recorded over 4" falling per hour. This only lasted for 5 minutes, put the rain continued to fall off and on all evening. There was about .5" around 5pm.

3/3/2012 6:55 AM 0.98 M M M M OMG, what a night!!! First, it rained off and on all day on Friday, starting at 7:30 am. A downpour for a few minutes around 9:50am. Then it stopped raining for the afternoon and evening. Then, we went camping in south/centeral Union Co. at Wingate Univ. with the Scouts. My husband stayed home and reported the .98" at the location of the station NC-UN-9. Where we camped, the rain and wind were intense, starting around 12:15 am. At Wingate Univ, a light rain stated about 9:15pm. Heavy rain came around 2:15am and again later on. It stopped by 6:30am. about 45 degrees. Clear, sunny skies emerged.

I don't think all of the plants re dead, but any early growth is burned to a crispy black. This includes plants such as holly bushes, crype myrtles, hardy hibiscus, etc. The irises and peony survived just fine, as did most of the day and oriental/asiatic lilies. The blueberries and blackberries look okay, too.

5/15/2012 7:30 AM 1.76 M M M M A light misty rain began at 7:35am. By 8:30 am it was a steady rain and at 8:40 it was a downpour that lasted for 13 minutes. We had about .1" at this time. Another downpour began at 9:57am lasting for 10 minutes, and another one at 10:27 lasting for only a few minutes. By 10:57 it was just a light rain again. until 11:05 when it was a consistent, heavy rainfall. At 12:25 pm the rain had stopped completely and I measured the gauge to be .85" I also saw the first hummingbird of the season. at 3:45 the rain was very intense, but stopped at 4:00pm. At 5:45 there was a total of about 1.25" of rain. At 8:15pm there was lightning and pea-sized hail along with heavy winds and flood warnings in the area. I was trying to drive home and decided to pull over into a parking lot (I was only 2.2 miles via the road from home). There was a lull in the weather at 8:35 and I drove home at that time - making it before more pounding rain came at 8:46pm.

We could see patches of blue sky to the South. By 4:20 it was a light rain fall again.

Then the rain and by 12:45 am we were up checking the radar picture on the weather channel. The trees were blowing sideways like in the hurricanes I've been through on the NC coast in the mid-late '90's. The next morning damage was evident by everything from small tree debris littering EVERYWHERE to ginormous trees .25 mile away felled down (not ripped out of the ground, but split) to flashing and decor trim torn off of houses. But less then 8 miles away, everything looked fine. Oh, and the lightning was NON-STOP. Like, it was a constant light with no thunder. Really, it was rather scary.

By then, the weather was so miserable outside that I opted not to read it at all and skip reporting on the 27th. At this time, the digital rain gauge already read .43". The rain continued until about noon on the 27th. Although the wind persisted into the evening hours, the sun tried to peek through the clouds during the afternoon. The ground is very saturated and some areas along the road side apear threatening to flood.
