2/21/2012 7:30 AM 0.00 0.0 M 1.5 M Clear skies this morning and 18 degrees. Frosty. Total snow and ice on the ground is an average. Some areas of the lawn have no snow, some have 2 1/2 to 3 inches. Tried to take a sample for SWE (a bit late for Monday, so I wanted to take one for today), but I was unable. The main reason is that there is a fairly thick layer of ice between the snow and ground. I'm not sure how thick, but at least 1/4 inch. Also, the snow itself really isn't snow anymore. It's more like ice grains about the size of BB's. I considered taking a sample of the ice grains, but didn't know how helpful it would be if I couldn't get the layer of ice too, so I decided against taking a measurement altogether. Maybe I'll have more luck next week.

Lower sections of the lawn still have snow (though I didn't measure it today.) This morning at observation, there was VERY light snow falling, light wind, 33 degrees, partly cloudy but clearing to the west.

I didn't measure it, but I'm guessing the snow was about 3 - 4 inches deep when I shoveled it Saturday morning. It was light and fluffy, easy to shovel. The total snow on the ground is an average. Some places around the yard have no snow, some places under the trees have as many as 5 inches, with varying amounts in between elsewhere around the yard. The core sample (for SWE) is from a spot that had 3 MEASURABLE inches. I say measurable because there is about a 1" layer of ice underneath the snow that I couldn't get either the ruler or plastic cylinder through, so the SWE is just the 3" of snow I could collect.
