About 8 PM I heard that darn sound again, more rain. Sigh. The 0.11 that fell before 1 AM raised the Sept calendar month total (1 AM EDT on the 1st to 1 AM Oct 1) to 14.94", exceeding the 14.83" from August. 2 month total 28.77". Only 0.03" after 1 AM. Hope to see some soggy friends later at the CoCoRaisin gettogether! |

Just to tweak Mat, all this precip occurred AFTER I got home from the CoCoRaisin "picnic" It was nice to put some names and faces to the reports and station numbers, and meet the new members of the home team that uses our data in NJ. 0.31" of this total occurred before 1 AM, then 0.23" overnight. 5 day event total now 5.36". But Rutgers and the Yankees won, so between that and the picnic, it was a good day. |

Wow, only a trace from some drizzle a few times during the 24 hours...so it did not add to the event total. Ground is still totally saturated and sump pump remains way too busy. Bad month for electricity due to sump pump, and almost continuous need for the basement dehumidifier. But no heat yet. |

Some sprinkles during the day amounted to only a trace, but .02" during the early morning hours increased the 7 day event (aaaarrrgggghhh) total to 5.38". They say there's a light at the end of the tunnel, but we've heard that before. Chilly morning low was 45.9 F. |

6 days in a row with no rain; I guess it's time to start filling out drought impact reports! In fact, NJ hasn't had such a dry spell since May, almost exactly 5 months ago. Man, did we need it. The yard does not squish when I walk anywhere, and even the lake that formed at the low spot in the back yard is now firm soil. I was able to mow it yesterday for the first time since mid August. The basement sump pump is still running once an hour, but that's much less than earlier in the month; this has been reflected in my daily electric usage as well. On the bad news side, the stinkbugs are crazed, the outside of the NJAA observatory had thousands of them yesterday, with dozens making their way inside. The house has been a little better. Helpful tips: They drown in soapy water, and Febreze neutralizes the stink, even on hair and fingers. |

Rain began in the early morning hours, 58.5 F 88% RH at 7 AM with light rain. Heat ran (for 20 minutes) for the first time this season yesterday because some idiot (me) programmed the thermostat for 67 degrees at noon. I heard it start and shut it down. Rats, I was hoping to make it to Halloween this year. |

Mostly cloudy day, but clear enough early this morning for some meteor observing. The Orionids were not impressive, but overall a fun morning with quite a few bright shooting stars. Giving a talk tonight at the NJAA (www.njaa.org) on Asteroids, Comets, Meteors, and Other Things that Go Bump in the Night (like the ROSAT satellite that will crash to earth tomorrow morning, and we might see it just after 11 AM). Coldest morning of the season, 42.3 degrees at 7 AM. |

Took our decadal hot air balloon ride yesterday morning. Took off at exactly sunrise, first half was in dawn sunshine illuminating the near peak foliage. Still probably another week to go to the peak, but with this year's weather, didn't want to stall any longer. Light rain began after 1 AM. |

More snow than we had in Nov and Dec combined. 23.9F, 42% RH at 7 AM under clear skies with light winds. Quadrantid meteor shower peaks tomorrow morning, one of the best of the year, between moonset (3AM) and dawn (6 AM). SPECTACULAR launch of the ATREX rockets from Wallops Island VA this morning from 4:58 to 5:03 AM examining winds at the height of meteor trails. All 7 trails were seen from here, the closest and brightest visible until the brightening sky washed them out around 5:45 AM just before nautical twilight. Last evening the crescent moonn, Venus and Jupiter were also amazing. A good few days to look up! A breezy day yesterday, made preparations to lose power, but did not. 28.0 F and crystal clear at 7 AM. |

South Branch Raritan in High Bridge at record low level for the date in 92 years period of data. I guess I should till the garden in case it decides to rain in the future. 40.8 and rising at 7 AM. Also, two closest groundwater wells are below 10th percentile and approaching record low levels for the date. Submitted Drought Impact report. When the trees and grass really come alive, it could get ugly. We need rain! Only 0.18" in last 24 days. |

South Branch Raritan at High Bridge once again at record low flow for the date, 50 cfs vs 54 cfs in 1966 (92 year period of record). Moderate drought developing across NJ. 37.7 F at 7 AM under clear skies. Pretty spoiled this year, boiler has only run for 9 hours so far this month for heat compared to 26 hours at this time last year. Have to be careful not to under budget for next year after this insane "cold" season. Crabapple will finish 100% bloom today instead of the normal first or second week in May. |

HPC had us in 2.5-3" zone for the next 5 days as of yesterday afternoon, which sure would help. Spuce Run Reservoir began releasing water beyond the background spillway rate at about 1 PM Yesterday. |

A small sprinkle just after noon. Interesting contrast in river flows. N & S Branch Raritan are much below normal. Raritan main stem after the confluence is a bit below normal, which should drop soon as the dip proceeds downstream. Meanwhile, Delaware flow is much above normal, and Spruce Run Reservoir is 100% of capacity. They need to save that water, since if things continue as is, it will be needed when summer comes. Under clear skies at 7 AM it's 47.8, already up 3 degrees from the overnight low. |

Off and on showers all afternoon and evening amounted to very little; just enough to be annoying. This evening, Venus passes in front of the sun for the last time in 105.5 years (called a transit). Do not stare at the sun without PROPER eye protection. See your local astronomy club such as www.njaa.org for safe viewing options and events. RVCC also has a setup. Dazzling right Full Moon overnight...the Full Moon is much brighter than the day before or after even thought the percentage of the disk illuminated barely changes. This is due to tiny microcraters on the lunar surface being fully lit. |
