10/5/2011 7:00 AM 0.70 M M M M An amazing storm where we received 15% of our yearly precipitation before 4 October in about 16 hours. It rained *extremely* heavily between about 3 PM and about 6 PM, with eighth of a mile or less visibility and significant water on roadways. Then it rained lightly all night long. Everyone coming into and out of buildings, soaked or about to be soaked, was smiling and commenting happily on the rain and how welcome it was. The forecast was for 70% chance of rain: Kerry + crew hit it right. There is snow on Chicoma in the Jemez this morning, the fall's first snow. Humidity is still 94%, dewpoint 46F.

10/7/2011 7:00 AM 0.06 M M M M We had a rare AM rainbow at about 8:15 to the west, very big and bright! Gray, cool day like fall back east. The last day for the garden flowers and vegetables. It was a rough summer for all of us, plants, animals, insects and people, but ended gloriously. We survived. ____________________________ "Tears, idle tears, I know not what they mean, Tears from the depth of some divine despair, Rise in the heart and gather in the eyes, In looking on the happy autumn fields, And thinking of the days that are no more." - Alfred, Lord Tennyson
10/8/2011 7:00 AM 0.56 M M M M We have received 21% of our yearly precipitation in the last three days! Friday was gray and cold almost all day, with rain off and on, then heavy rain at night. Low was 33F. I brought in the inner funnel and cover yesterday. The Jemez are glorious this morning, all covered with bright, thick looking snow, a far cry from the flames and cinders of summer.

10/12/2011 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Two hummingbirds came by yesterday! This is the latest we have ever seen hummingbirds in 21+ years of observation. Nights are in the high 30's F here, too, and much colder further north, where they are coming from. We had to put our humminbird feeder out again for them [it had been put away for the winter].

7/6/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We have had no really significant rain since early May, while it looks like so many people in the state got an abundance of rain. We are left in parched fire danger while reading how happy everyone else is...feels sad to be so alone in drought.
7/7/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another sad day of big black clouds without a single drop of rain.
7/8/2012 7:00 AM 0.37 M M M M We finally, finally got some wetting rain! It was glorious not to have to spend the day watering crops. We actually enjoyed the fresh, fragrant garden and took out huge numbers of helpless weeds. Hallelujah! Hallelujah! (Can you hear the chorus now?)

7/10/2012 7:00 AM 0.11 M M M M Monday's lovely rain got us above 3 inches for the year, which is still extremely dry. It is very premature for people to be celebrating that the drought is over in New Mexico.

7/17/2012 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Very interesting that summer 2011 was a La Niña year and had a better monsoon than summer 2012 so far. Will be interesting to see if the monsoon appears later this summer. Seeing multiple dust devils 200+ feet high daily now - very very dry.
7/18/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another day with heavy dark clouds, wind and absolutely no rain at all here, but plenty of 200+ foot high dust devils. The drought marches relentlessly on.

7/22/2012 7:00 AM 0.21 M M M M God was merciful to us and gave us a good rain last night at about 8 PM. It was thrilling to smell the rain and see the ground wet! Very grateful.
7/23/2012 7:00 AM 0.08 M M M M Two days *in a row* with rain!!! What a miracle! Now we are nearing 3 and a half inches for the year. Unfortunately, the soil is so parched that it barely even looked damp.

7/27/2012 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M So far this is shaping up to be one of our driest years in the 10 years I have been keeping records. Lots of clouds, no rain. Wildlife is suffering severely: fewer insects of many kinds, fewer birds etc. For the first time ever we are not seeing any sphinx moths at night. Nighthawks are also very sparse compared to normal: many days we have none now. Coyotes are also sparser. Owls have disappeared when we usually have them every night in summer.

7/29/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M While I water the garden today, I will be honoring the memory of our beloved Dr. Robert, who would have been 10 today. He was my soul-mate and I miss him every day. The weather continues dry and very hot. We do have some beautiful dragonflies right now, some as big as hummingbirds!

8/3/2012 7:00 AM 0.32 M M M M We were richly blessed last night, Baruch Hashem! We had hours of thunder and lightning, which was super for releasing nitrogen for our plants. We received enough water that we have a whole day off from watering our garden and our big, old junipers will be less stressed. It is just glorious to see how fresh and clean everything looks this AM! Profoundly grateful for the long awaited gift. "For you have made him most blessed for ever; you have made him glad with your countenance." Tehillim 22
8/4/2012 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M The air smells so fresh and clean after our good rain! We enjoyed our day off from watering Friday. Still feeling super blessed by that rain...
8/5/2012 7:00 AM 0.19 M M M M The rain fell in a very short time around 5 PM. No more rain last night despite 50% forecasted chance. 20% seems to give us much more rain than the higher %s. Delighted to be at 4 inches for the year! B"H"!
8/6/2012 7:00 AM 0.11 M M M M 60% during the day yielded a sunny day, but 30% at night gave us rain. We had a *very* heavy north wind before midnight and the rain came after midnight. Hurray for rain!

8/11/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Continued hot and very dry. Seeing huge [1 mile or longer] dust storms any time the wind kicks up over 15 mph on the Caja del Rio Plateau. The soil is extremely powdery from drought. Our first Monarch butterfly arrived yesterday! I'm glad to have a garden to provide food for it.
8/12/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Once again winds gusting up top 35 mph, thunder, dark clouds and dust storms with a brief shower that did not yield measurable rain. The dust storm was over a mile long by a quarter mile wide, quite dramatic.
8/13/2012 7:00 AM 0.48 M M M M We received 12% of our previous annual precipitation on Sunday afternoon. It just kept raining and raining, gloriously! There was a great deal of convection during the first part of the storm. The dew point this morning is 54, very high for us. We are immensely grateful, feeling blessed.

8/15/2012 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M We had several very brief showers all afternoon, very pleasant after a very hot, sticky day.
8/16/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Looked promising, but once again the heavy clouds, lightning + thunder slid SE of here. All our storms in the last week have come from the NW. Usually during a monsoon storms come from WSW.
8/17/2012 7:00 AM 0.95 M M M M Biggest 1 day amount of rain since 5 Oct 2011. We received approximately 21% of our previous yearly precipitation total in about 40 minutes. Rainfall rate at one point was 4.76" an hour. You can imagine the erosion and damage to our land.
