It's been drizzling, sprinkling, raining lightly to moderate most of the day. We needed it as I'd dug a hole Sunday to plant a tree and the soil was rock-hard dry down past 2-feet and I had to use a 17-lb breaker bar to bust the soil enough to shovel out the hole. I put "mushroom" dirt in the hole when I planted the tree. This rain will be very helpful to it's settling in. |

It has been a dreary, windy, chilly day and the highest temp I've managed to notice has been 46.1F - at 10:52a and it has been around 45.5 [give or take a couple degrees up/down] most of the day. It's still lightly raining and windy but the guage doesn't seem to have enough in it for all the precip we've had today. The animals want out, look-smell, and run back in where it's cozy. |

It was a windy, chilly, drizzlie day again but it began to clear by about 11-ish am and there were peeks of sun until finally the clouds mainly cleared and the sun was able to shine. I believe we had more rain than the guage accumulated due to this blustery wind. |

The cold snap finished most of the garden and quite a few trees, shrubs and other plants. Green today, gone tomorrow - was what it seemed like. Some plants seem to have weathered the freeze fairly well. Will uncover the two garden beds [beets and brussel sprouts] I'd put frost blankets and such over and see how they fared. So far the collards and chards seem to be doing well. |

It was very cloudy and it looked like it would rain any minute but the clouds passed and the sun came out. It was very windy and the wind h-o-w-l-e-d around the house at times. It calmed some but was still windy enough to be a problem as I tried to mulch the leaves, blowing them around as I cut into a pile of them. I managed to do much of it, but there is still much that "got away". |

The step stones were damp but there wasn't enough to collect. A friend down the road said he also had felt a few drops early this morning when he went out to feed his chickens and such. It was extremely windy, blowing every which way. What a storm we had - rain, then rain and some sleet, then rain and snowflakes, then all snow and at one point in time I was considering we might qualify for a blizzard with fat, heavy flakes, strong winds and low visibility, but after 20 plus minutes the snow slowed down, though it was still quite blustery. It was mainly over here by 2:57p and I measured 1/2-in of snow. It was a white winter wonderland for a spell before the snow began to melt. There was still snow patches this morning and it 'rained' snow ice as the sun came up and began to melt the ice left overnight. The soil is very sloppy and slippery with standing water still in some areas. The snow was heavy and wet. The 0.13 measurement includes the rain and other precip to snow. |

I thought all the snow had melted until I went out in the yard and found patches of "snow ice" and even more amazing is it lasted until way into the afternoon today. The soil is still soggy and slippery but it is slowly soaking in and there is some water still barely visible in spots but there are no longer puddles in the areas I looked at today. BTW - frost blankets work on cold weather vegetables even with the freezing temps. I couldn't get to the beets to cover them with the ground so sloppy so they are 'burnt' by the cold, but I have been able to put a bucket over the celery and the frost blanket over the brussel sprouts and they are doing very well. The sprouts are almost big enough to pick and I am trying to keep them going until I can. The celery is an experiment that is working so far. When I was able to cover the beets they were doing well also. |

I was in the kitchen at 11p last night and heard this "noise" I couldn't really place and looked out front and by the light from my neighbor's porch light I could see my front trees swaying back and forth. This morning I had to go out for an appointment and at times it rained so hard it was like driving in a fog; the wind blew me out of my lane a couple times, luckily no vehicle was on the opposite lane at the time, and I hit a couple water pools on the road that threw me into the other lane. Again, thanks to God there was no traffic in that lane. Not a good driving experience. The soil is soaked, slippery and puddled. |

We had some really heavy snows in-between light to moderate flurries and blusters yesterday so this is the best I can measure. I looked at rooftops this morning and you could see the streaks and cleared areas in the snow on the roofs. The highest temp I recorded for yesterday was 32.0F at 10:41 am and it began to fall after that. It was 23.8F at 10:03p and 19.1F at 6:53a this morning. The official temp was likely lower. There was still light flurries this morning after I took the measurements. The sun melted what it hit but there is still quite a blanket of snow in the shaded areas. It's icy snow and I slipped on it when I went out to pick up the mail.
Given the low temps [25.4F at 9:16p tonight] it will likely be hard ice in the morning. |

We'd had showers but at 12:50p we had heavy rain and strong gusty winds and by 2:25p it was lightly snowing, some sleet, then fat, wet snow flakes. There was still major ground snow coverage when I measured this morning but quite a bit of the coverage has since melted and there may not be much to measure tomorrow morning. I looked out at 9:39p and it had been raining. At 11:00p I noticed the winds were really howling. At about 3:13a - the Fentress County phone notify called to tell me there was a severe thunderstorm warning in effect. Later before I went back to sleep I heard a pounding like sound and realized it was a very heavy downpour, listened for a bit and didn't hear any close thunder. The house insulation blanks out anything else. The NOAA radio never went off but when I talked with a lady in town, she said hers had. |

The snow began to fall lightly at 3:20p yesterday and it snowed skinny, thin flakes; and at 3:40p big, fat flakes but it snowed continuously after it began. The water equivalent in the rain guage was 0.20 but the content was 0.19 for the accumulation. It has been very windy/gusty and the accumulation was a bit icy to collect, so perhaps it had melted a bit. It's 9:11a and the sun has peeked out. The temp was 38.7F at 8:51p last night and 30.8F at 4:48a this morning and has dropped since to 24.7F at 8:48a. It was down to 24.3F but has risen with the sunshine. Snow is still falling even so. |

0.20 of the 0.78 was rainfall before it began to snow; 0.58 was the melt value of the snow that fell into the guage. I did an experiment and found out that the snow can compact quite a bit over time and the SWE can change from 1/2-in measurement to 1/2-in measurement. It began to fully snow here at 8:50am and by 9:25a the ground was covered, as was roofs and the rock driveway was accumulating. I measured 1/2-in snow at 9:47a with an SWE of 0.20; There was 1-1/4-in total measured at 11:15a and the new snow depth was 1/2-in with an SWE of 0.16; I measured a new 1/2-in of snow somewhere around 12:15 to 12:30p with an SWE of 0.27 [not sure of the exact time as the phone rang and I answered it without noting the time first]. There was asnother 1/2-in of new accumulation by 1:16p with an SWE of 0.33 and a 2-in total depth on the railing. I measured 2-1/2-in total accumulation on the railing at 3:55p with an SWE of 0.45. This morning I measured a total accumulation of 2-1/2-in packed snow/ice with an SWE of 0.32 - and it was crusty and hard too. I'd wondered about the total depth and SWE over the time I've been collecting data and had some 'free' time to just collect measurements and found out that many small measurements do not necessarily add up to one big one, but it was an interesting endeavor. Not sure of what to do with the info but it was informative for sure. The snow fall started with big, fat clumps of flakes, quarter-size, 50-cent size and half a dollar bill size, so things were covering rather quickly. It was a very wet snow and so any melt became slushy ice and later hard ice under the snow. Rather dangerous to walk on. I went out today and saw lots of attempted snow creatures, so it was a fun snow even so. I'm ready to garden. |

It was a very windy, rainy day that began at 7:20a with a misty drizzle and became rain and thunderific at 7:35a, with rolling thunders at 7:45a that shook the house and rattled windows. It rained/poured most of the day and 'cleared' a bit by late afternoon but rev'd up again after 5p and was really putting on a show by 6p, then it calmed down after a bit and just rained lightly. There are large branches down that I can see, but can't tell if any trees were blown down as I haven't gone out to check. The soil is very wet, sloppy and slipery. I believe more rain fell than was recordable given the wind blowing every which way and really strong enough at times to rattle the vinyl porch ceiling and blow stuff all about on the porch. Lots of trash blown in also. |

At 8p last night I noticed big splats on the step stones. The wind was very gusty yesterday [still is]and causes noises that keep the cats and the dog on 'alert'. I think some branches may have fallen on the power lines yesterday as around 4:50p there was a hum-boom and the lights flickered several times and my UPS for the compter kept clicking off/on with the flickers. The experience was like a line-bounce when something falls on the lines and they ripple for a bit. The power did not go out other than that flickering. It is still very gusty and blustery and the temp has been dropping since I noted 59.0F at 6:52a; it is now 54.9F at 9:32a and dark clouds have been on the horizon NW-ward since I got up this morning, so Jamestown is likely rainy. Here, the sun still peeks out now and then but the skies are ever darker my way as the storm moves ever closer to where I am. |

2/29/12 - Tornado watch #46, then #48. 0.07-in by 2:10p; 0.30 more by 3:50p [horrendous winds]; 0.59 more by 6:34a this morning. That was some storm even here in Clarkrange/Grimsley. The wind was so vicious - it was like being in a "minor" hurricane and the wind blew down bird feeders, slammed stuff on the porch from this end to that end and back several times - wow. We had a short, horrendous fall of dime to nickel size hail that partially covered the yard. Rain and hail was blown up under the 12-ft wide covered porch to the house door. I have never seen the wind blowing so hard in one direction and then literally blow itself back in the other direction - like two people holding a bucket of water and throwing it at each other at the same time and the splash in the middle - type thing. The rain came down so fast and hard, that water was puddling and running after just a few minutes. The wind turbines are still on the roof - whew! The power here went off about 4:30p and came back on at 2:05a. I was up at 1:48a and we were still without power.
Anyway, this gives an idea of possible damage to the power infrastructure given how long it took to get the power 'restored'. I looked on the map and Rinnie is not listed, so no idea of how far away it is from here, but it is partway between here and Crossville, so not all that far away - 15-20 miles maybe. I know it did get yellowish looking outside here but had turned to grey by the time I got to where I could get a good look outside. I heard there was also one in Sparta, TN. Any others?

I measured 0.35 sometime before 2p [this was from earlier rains]; then there was another 0.66 measured this morning from heavy rains last evening. What a day - Watvh #56 at 9:25a, then watch #59 issued at 1:16p. Air raid siren going off at 5:17p and a horrendous thunder/lightning storm at 7:25p. I was so tired by now from going to the basement and back up that I laid on the sofa with NOAA radio going off and went to sleep on the sofa. I heard there was tornado damage in Rickman, TN a possible in South Cumberland County - haven't heard for sure yet. That storm is still going and is in North Florida, south Georgia and moving down. There may have been some damage up Jamestown/Allardt way as the horizon was dark black that way when the siren went off. It got rather windy where I am at that time.

We had a light shower yesterday morning a bit after 7a and that was it. This morning a storm came through about 5:23a with strong winds which tore 'tender' branch tips off and blew them all over the porch, yard, etc.,and rain and the winds blew rain up under the covered porch to my front door. There was distant boomers before 3p and big splats fell at 3:09p. There was a really close boom at 3:11p and at 3:15p the rain came in big heavy drops. At 3:19 there was two booms that shook the house and sent cats to the basement. Some "rain" drops looked rather odd and bounced as they hit the walkway, but if it was hail, it was small. I measured 0.97-in precip from this 'storm' and it was mostly over by 4:35p. I measured another 0.04-in before dark for a total of 1.01-in precip for the reporting period. |

It was a bit foggy and drizzlie yesterday morning and quite humid, and gloomy looking. Sprinkles, thunder and drizzles at 2:12p Hard rain at 5:38p and at 5:54p I measured 0.68-in precip. I measured 0.32-in at 2p and the 0.02 later - no rain after. I was out when the rain came down along 127 and it was coming down so hard the road was covered with water and I couldn't see the lane markings and it was difficult to see where I was going. I slowed down but many others drove as if it was a sunny day. Scary. Here didn't receive anything near what I was driving in, and it was a quite extensive cloud-burst as I drove in it for over 15 miles there and back and it began to lighten up as I was nearing my turn-off of 127 to come home. I guess it was a 'highway rain'. |

Pines, oaks, dogwoods, holly tree, wild blackberries, peach tree, 'tulip' tree ....... some dead, others severly stressed. Potatoes and beans giving up and I'm watering them. Tomatoes spindly, tiny leaves, few flowers; peppers stopped producing. Seems the plants/trees are going into survival mode. Even the clover is dying ......We need rain, a long, soft shower for hours, not a deluge that hits and runs and does no good. |

Wow, what a back-door storm we had. One minute it was OK, then I was grabbing hanging pots while debris was blowing about. We had mainly high, roaring winds with little rain [0.10 measured at 6:10p], and distant thunder. The yard is littered with leaves and green leaf branches and my 12-ft Granny Smith apple was blown over and was at a 45-deg angle. I braced it this morning and found out that it was only the stapled weed fabric that was holding it up, else it would have been totally uprooted. My neighbors kidde pool was taken for a 'spin' by the winds several house lengths from where it was. Trampolines were blown one way and then another, over and then up. Potted plants were rolling about the yard. The cats couldn't decide if it was safer to run inside or into the woods. I haven't been out into the wooded area to check for tree damage, but at last the wind turbines are still on the roof. |

I was going to out to dig some potatoes [what there is with this drought] as it looked like it might rain and I thought to do a few things on the way out and when I got to the door, the step stones were all wet [2p]. There was some thunders and gusty winds but it was a "real" rain - Yeah!!!! At 8:09p it became very gusty and trees were whipping back and forth again - but we received no rain from whatever it was passing over. It did blow the apple tree over again, but in a different direction and there isn't likely to be much attached root left now. That tree has stood over 7 years but the storm Thursday and whatever it was last night was more than it could deal with. So now, I've lost the lucious peach tree and likely the Granny Smith apple. This weather is weird and destructive anymore. |

There was sprinkles at 2:12p with thunders and blinking lights. At 3:25p there was a *REAL* downpour coming down. I measured 1.56-in precip at 6:34p. I noticed it was pouring at 12:51a, and it was still raining when I looked out at 6:57a. I had to change cylinders to bring it in to measure and there was 3.80-in precip in it for a total of 5.36-in precip for the reporting period. There is still a nice, soft rain falling so thre will be more for the next report. I've lost trees, grass, produce, etc. but we have RAIN !!!!!! Maybe I can manage a late garden. |

It's rather dark and gloomy out but winds are calm. We really needed such a long, wet event and the trees and shrubs are also showing their appreciation. What hadn't died is again greening up. We were under severe thunderstorm watch #498 to 3a. At 10:57p I checked the internet weather and there was a long, nasty line of severe thunderstorms coming down my way. I heard thunders at 10:39p and rain and thunder at 11:10p with the net map showing lots more headed this way. It was still thundering at 12:09p, but it appears that the worst of it passed by. |

I was outside when I heard thunders at 1:30p and NOAA gave a "severe thunderstorm warning"; there were splats at 2:18p. At 2:45p a very hard rain with loads of pea-size hail was falling for about 5 minutes or so [the 'heavy' hail was only about 1-1/2 min], and it was kind of 'roaring', and I measured 0.36 at 2:55p. It was still grumbling at 3:05p and there was another shower at 5:08p and I measured 0.03-in for that shower and another 0.01 at 8:18p, for a total of 0.40 for the reporting period. There was minor tree damage in the front yard, with end-tip branches on the ground. Haven't gone in the back trails to check. We REALLY needed some rain and thankfully it wasn't as damaging as it could have been. |

At 10:43a there was a power flux and the power went out for a bit and then came back on.At 11:00a a very close bolt knocked out the TV reception and the satellite box had to go through diagnostics and reset itself. It was still raining lightly at 12:50p and there was still thunders. More sprinkles at 2:10p. I heard the wind caused some upsets along the 127 sale stretch and it lifted a 'market' umbrella out of a stand with a pole insert and flung it. It blew apples off my trees but I haven't found any major damage as yet. Thankfuly it was of short duration. |

I was in Crossville, TN when the storm came in and the winds blew, the rain deluged, it was very dark like almost night and the lightnings kept the lights flickering. I didn't run all my errands as I decided to head for home. It lightened up as I got closer to home and was a light rain in Clarkrange. I measured 1.38-in precip at 3p and another 0.01 this morning for a total of 1.38 for the reporting period. There must have been wind even here as things were leaning and had to be restaked. On the way to Crossville there was a revival tent set up, on the way back, it was blown down and some of the chairs were overturned. |

I heard rumbles yesterday at 5:06p and looked out and it was raining. I measured 0.27-in precip at 6:12p. It was raining when I got up and I measured another 0.10-in precip for a total of 0.37-in for the reporting period. It has been raining all morning - so far. |

I was outside yesterday and felt 'drips' about 4p; then it began to drizzle about 4:10p and it was raining about 4:20p - I measured 0.05-in precip at 5:04p and another 0.01 this morning for a total of 0.06-in precip for the reporting period. It was a bit foggy this morning but it has cleared and the sun is out. |
