1/18/2012 8:00 AM 0.06 0.8 0.04 8.0 1.78 23F, 2-3SW w/gusts, 100% overcast -- snowing on all surrounding mts., lightly snowing in valley, can hear howitzers being fired to relieve avalanche threat on Teton Pass and/or JH Ski Resort. Lowest inch of snow on ground continues to be frozen solid.
1/19/2012 8:00 AM 1.86 14.6 1.86 18.0 1.96 32F, 2-4SW, 100% overcast, moderate fluffy snow falling. Tube had 17" snow on it, board (affected by wind) had 14," ground 18." Ground SWE OK, but had to approximate SWE for tube by slicing off overflow and measuring it separately, then combining with tube. Just pushed tube down through 14" on bd and calculated SWE normally. Recommend telling someone to take all of this snow and shove it! Took photos and will e-mail to Nolan later today.
1/20/2012 8:00 AM 0.83 4.0 0.49 14.5 1.96 33F, 1SW, 70% overcast, not snowing. Extremely difficult to measure tube and ground. Most tube snow was piled atop it, had to be scraped into tube. Ground totaled 14.5" - but that was only down to 1-1.5" of ICE at ground level. (SWE reflects the 14.5 sampled.) Hearing howitzers on Teton Pass to minimize avalanche threat. Skiers at JH Mountain Resort very happy, but in valley, snow is EXTREMELY slushy.
1/21/2012 8:00 AM 0.12 2.2 0.14 13.5 2.02 33F, 6-9S, 100% overcast and snowing. Ground measurement does not reflect "1 layer of solid ice on ground under snow. Hearing howitzers on Tton Pass.
1/22/2012 8:00 AM 0.12 0.3 0.14 13.5 2.20 23F, calm, mostly cloudy (fog/snow overcast on mts.), grd snow getting really crunchy, appears to be 1.5-2" of ICE at ground level, preventing accurate depth measurement and distorting SWE.
1/23/2012 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 13.0 2.24 22F, 1S, 100% overcast, apparently snowing in surrounding mountains. Snow atop ground continues to freeze, chopped down thru and measured 4" over frozen snow under 13" of compressable snow (as sampled in 4" tube).
1/24/2012 8:00 AM 0.12 2.2 0.11 17.0 2.32 0F, calm, clear, some ground fog over Snake River and midway up Munger Mt. Tube had considerable frost on exterior. Continue to have about 4" of ice under snow on ground and ice is NOT collected with snow to determine the SWE, which continues a rising trend.
1/25/2012 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M 12.5 2.62 28F, 4-8S, 100% overcast, apparently snowing on surrounding mts. and may be coming down to valley floor from S and W. No frost on tube. Ground depth and SWE does NOT reflect 3" of ice under snow.
1/26/2012 8:00 AM 0.20 0.3 0.20 17.0 3.23 28F, 4-6S, overcast -- just beginning to snow in valley, aleady snowing on surrounding mts., hear howitzers blowing Teton Pass avalanche threats, ground snow is crusty over 3" of ice that is NOT accounted for in SWE (but total snow depth does have 3" added to 14" of snow). NEW snowfall on bd and tube was entirely ice -- no snow.
1/27/2012 8:00 AM 0.15 2.5 0.21 20.5 3.26 20F, slight breeze (1S), clear but for a few scattered cumulus clouds, m. west. Now .25" ice on snowboard, app. 3" ice under ground snow. Neither factored in to SWE reports. 20.5" total depth on ground and 2.5" on board do, however, include snow plus ice -- just not in SWE calculation. Not snowing. Hear howitzers on Teton Pass for avalanche control.
1/28/2012 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 20.0 2.85 4F, 23-6S, light overcast, not snowing, heavy frost on outer perimeter of tube. To sample ground snow, have to poke 12" tube through 17" of snow, leaving 5" open column above it, but there is still app. 3" of ice atop ground that is NOT sampled for the SWE calculation. Going to photo this condition and chunk up the ice today to measure its exact depth and SWE content, provide same to Anthony Bergantino upon his request. First time in 7 days that ground SWE has NOT been higher than the day before.
1/29/2012 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 17.5 3.83 16F, calm, 100% overcast but not snowing (except perhaps in surr. mts.) Grd snow depth of 17.5" with SWE of 3.83" when tube crushed thru and compacting snow into tube down to 3.5" layer of ice measured 1/28 at 2.85" SWE. If combined, total accum. snow and ice depth of 21" with SWE of 6.68".
1/30/2012 8:00 AM 0.01 0.1 0.01 16.0 3.40 24F, 7-10SSE, Total overcast (just beginning to snow and blow). Trace in tube and on board. Ground depth and SWE does NOT include approx. 3.5" of frozen snow with SWE measured two days ago of 1.45".
1/31/2012 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 14.0 3.66 16F, calm, mostly cloudy, light frost on exterior of tube, hearing howitzers for avalanche control on Teton Pass. Drop in grd depth to 14" from 16" suggests an increase of an inch or two in amount of frozen snow below that sampled for the SWE calculation.
2/1/2012 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 13.5 4.35 9F, calm, mostly cloudy, heavy frost on tube exterior. Ground snow sampling difficult due to extensive amount of frozen snow now, also approx. 4" of nearly solid ice just above ground. Have to fill tube almost full with hot water to melt the snow for SWE. SWE for total snow ONLY reflects top 13.5" of snow on ground, does not include the ice below it.
2/2/2012 8:00 AM 0.01 0.5 0.01 13.5 2.98 24F, calm, 90% overcast, with solid bank of dark cumulus clouds over western mts., suggesting snow. Not snowing in valley. Grd total same as 2/1, over app. 4" of frozen snow not sampled for SWE.
2/3/2012 8:00 AM 0.01 0.1 0.01 13.0 3.69 3F, calm, clear, heavy frost, for 5 mins, had layer of grd fog reducing visibility to 200'. Still fog over Snake River. Grd. snow mainly frozen. SWE does NOT include appr. 4" of frozen snow under it. Minor snowfall was from 2/2 p.m.
2/4/2012 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 13.0 2.60 -2F, calm, moderately heavy fog, more than 300' top to bottom, prevents seeing sky, appr. distance visibility less than 500 feet. Grd. snow crunchy on top, sitting on appr. 4" layer of frozen snow (NOT including in snow depth of 13" for SWE calculation).
2/5/2012 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 13.0 2.71 -4F, 1-2S, persistent fog, heavy frost. Top of grd snow is frozen, had to force yardstick through it. Hal-frozen snow below sits on app. 4" of frozen snow (NOT chopped out for sample, so that should be added to 13" sampled depth for SWE.
2/6/2012 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 13.0 M -10F, calm, clear, w/ scattered patches of ground fog. Ground snow now so crunchy frozen that future sampling makes sense only if new snow falls. Current 13" does NOT include difficult-to-sample crust of approx. 4" at ground level. Will resume grd sampling if significant increase in temps start to have major impact on amount of moisture.
2/9/2012 8:00 AM 0.01 0.1 0.01 12.0 2.39 14F, calm, overcast, snowing very lightly, bit of frost, very light fog. Ground sample for SWE does NOT include approx. 4" of frozen snow atop ground. Remaining 12" of top snow is very crusty, hard to push tube down to frozen layer.
2/10/2012 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 13.0 3.49 13F, 1-2SW, 100% overcast, medium frost, surrounding mountains hidden by falling snow, has just begun to snow in valley. Ground depth of 13" does NOT include 4" of frozen snow below it at ground level.
2/11/2012 8:00 AM 0.08 0.3 6.00 0.5 2.98 21F, calm, 100% overcast, fog <500', snow in tube was ice. Grd depth of 14" does NOT include 4" of hard, frozen snow below it at ground surface.
2/12/2012 8:00 AM 0.14 1.3 0.13 14.0 M 29F. calm, 100% overcast, not snowing, new snow is very wet and compacts easily. Lost some grd snow yesterday, regained some of it. Grd depth does NOT include 4" of frozen snow at grd. level.
2/13/2012 8:00 AM 0.01 0.1 0.01 18.0 5.27 20F, calm, mostly cloudy. Ground snow very crusty. Did FULL sample of grd. snow, including 4" layer of frozen snow at grd. level. Breakdown: 4" frozen snow with SWE of 1.37, 14" of crusty snow over that with SWE of 3.90. Had to use ice chopper to get through frozen level. Also had to use 12.56" of hot water (microwaved) in order to melt the snow and ice in order to obtain SWE -- total of about a half-hour!
2/14/2012 8:00 AM 0.01 0.1 0.01 M M 19F, 2-3S, 100% overcast, heavy frost on tube, snowing in surrounding mountains but not in valley. Did not do ground sample.

2/20/2012 8:20 AM 0.00 0.0 M 14.0 2.60 -3, calm, 30% overcast, low fog over Snake River and lower mountains, frost. Ground depth reflects 14" of crusty snow (2,60 SWE) over 5" of frozen snow (1.48 SWE) that was removed with ice chopper.
2/21/2012 8:00 AM 0.03 0.5 0.03 M M 26F, 3-6SW, 100% overcast, no frost. Snowing lightly but appears to be picking up. Wind also seems to be picking up. Did not sample ground, due to frozen layers
2/22/2012 8:00 AM 0.16 M M 18.0 M 37F, 1-7SSW, 100% overcast, light mist of rain/snow mix falling. Snow in tube had melted, so SWE of .16 was all liquid. Snow on board had melted, run off. Did not sample ground, but depth at 1630 on 2/21 avgd 20". Cleared driveway 2x pm of 2/21, when total of new snow was approx. 5". Hearing howitzer on Teton Pass to reduce avalanche threat.

3/5/2012 8:30 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 19.0 4.62 18F, partly cloudy, calm, heavy frost. Difficult to sample ground snow, since upper 15.5" was very crusty, lowest 3.5' was essentially ice. Did not seem to have gotten the full column of snow crammed into tube, so SWE of 4.62" MAY be somewhat less than accurate.
