10/25/2012 7:00 AM 0.67 8.4 M 5.5 M Tmax: 38; Tmin: 16. Snow began around 3pm, accumulating to 0.9" by 6pm (MDT). No rain in gage (I had the funnel in), so that weather service prediction of mixed precipitation even at my elevation did not pan out. Snowed more or less continuously through the night, heaviest around 8-9pm (+/-) when it reached close to 2"/h. Just before that heavier period, there were some snow pellets mixed in, often a good sign that the atmosphere is somewhat unstable (and moist). Totals by 1am (MDT) were 6.0/0.49" which was already on the high side of what I expected. Upslope flow continued through the night which helped to add another 2.4" by 7am MDT (0.18"), all in all a very nice outcome, at the top end of my PSA prediction. Clearing with dropping temperatures this morning, down to 14F by 7am MDT. Still cloudy below 8K. Roads were snowpacked in unplowed portion of neighborhood, slushy and a tad icy on the plowed road through Jamestown, and just wet below 5.5K. Looks like we might be able to add a few inches tonight.

Stayed in low 20s most of the day, another round of snow from late afternoon into late evening, with only 0.02/0.2" after midnight (MST) - I had originally estimated this as a trace, but then I came back last night, I actually measured it (and I don't believe that it blew onto the snowboard, not enough wind yesterday. Storm totals: 11.3/0.94", not too shabby. Not quite clear this morning, with fog within a mile of our house, hence only a low of 9F. Snow was surprisingly dense (small flakes) in this round, otherwise I would have cracked the 12" mark...

It will be very cold by tomorrow morning.

After morning freezing drizzle, we got some light snow (pellet) showers in evening, as the cold air flushed out again. On way home, we had the nearly full moon shine on us above 8000', above the fog layer near Jamestown (around 7pm). Riming was visible on trees between about 7K and 8K, while there must have been enough sunshine above that layer to remove it. Despite freezing temperatures, patches of snow from this evening's showers shrank overnight, sublimating into exceptionally dry air that was being advected in (<20% RH) under breezy conditions.

Snow more or less continuously from mid-morning into the night, heaviest around 3-4pm when we got 1" in one hour (FroPa). After that, we only received 0.7" out of 0.06" (a lot denser than the previous 24h+). Winds were anywhere from calm (this morning) to swirly from the northwest with FroPa, so this was still mostly spill-over. Totals since Thursday: 0.31/5.1", or more than three/four times of all of November! Oh well, if models had been correct from a week ago, this should have been twice as much, but I am not complaining (too much).

Looks like December continues to make up for lost ground this fall, certainly feels like winter, with dendrites coming down this morning, at 9F...

There was a brutal period around 7-9pm when the temperature was still close to 0F while occasional gusts reached >30mph. I know this firsthand because I shoveled the end of our driveway that had gotten 'buried' by the snowplow yesterday. Snow depth dropped overnight with the wind and settling of an overall fluffy snow event (3d total: 0.61/12.8"). Here is hoping for more early next week!

Nice little cold snap, three days in a row below -10C, and a 3d average just above -20C, which is the 1st such event since December 2009, and ranked 5th in the last 23 winters (the cold snap in early February 2011 was much colder on two days, but there was no 3rd day with a high below -10C). As indicated above, we had rising temperatures overnight, so the more extreme cold is over, and we should hit above freezing by tomorrow. Unfortunately, the drought is continuing - this month is on track to become the driest January on record (we could get another 1/4" of moisture, and we would still have a record since 1991).

We did get enough snow to keep us above the January record, more tomorrow. Still some flurries in the air this morning, and snow drifts on the roads up high, hardly any snow below 8K. Milky sunrise in the blowing snow to remind me of van Gogh paintings...

I guess it never really stopped snowing overnight, but got a bit denser towards the morning, as it got colder and colder. Roads were messy in Boulder both last night and this morning, not so bad above Jamestown where nothing melted from below. Just realized that the 10.5" snow depth is the highest so far this winter (well below normal).

Snow was most intense from 7am to 11am yesterday (2"/h+), tapering off through afternoon, pretty much done by 4pm. So, the bulk of 15.2/0.85" fell in 12h, not bad. Snow depth reached 22" in late afternoon, only to settle by 2.5" overnight. Broke trail and skied for the 1st time this winter (behind our house), very late in the season.

Snow must have commenced before sunrise, snowing lightly at observing time (heavier to the east as we went down the canyon). We need another 3.3" to get from 6th to 3rd snowiest February since 1991 (that would be 31.9"). Last year's 58.4" is definitely out of reach... Snowpack has dropped (and settled) by 5" from its peak 36h ago.

Moisture/snow record is based on one measurement at 6:30pm - best guess is that a lot of this fell in 1h right after we left in the morning (say, around 7:45am), and from about 1:30-4pm (or so the radar indicated). Clear and almost calm this morning to let our temperature drop to near 0F. Peak snow depth was 20.5" (last evening). Monthly snowfall total is now up to 33.6", 3rd highest February on record.

Pretty much done by 3pm, but 1"/h+ from about 5-11am. Peak snow depth: 19". Clear, calm, and cold for March 10th this morning. They burned the giant woodpiles from 2011 in our neighborhood, open flames lasted right through the snowfall. Saw this 1sthand by skiing by that area.

Yes, nice to get this much snow out of next to nothing, looks like we are recycling the snow from Saturday - still snowing and cold (14F) at observing time this morning. Snow started later up here than in the plains, around 6pm. Mostly light for next 13h, but one good band around 9pm MDT that dropped close to 2" in one hour (estimated). Looks like today is the last cold day of the week, though.

Lingering light snow yesterday morning, excellent XC conditions behind our house (skied around 8-10am, with temperatures mostly in high 10sF - did not feel like March at all). Breezy in PM, as we got flushed out (rare March inversion for mid-day, with Boulder still in upper 20sF, while we were 10F warmer). Quite windy overnight, with temperatures just below freezing. Snowpack formed a nice crust. Precip/snow for March 9th through 12th was 0.91/14.5", about what I expected just for the 9th alone, oh well.

FroPa-related snow shower around 2pm, had melted and refrozen on snowboard, but I got a good read from the snowpack itself, since the ruler sank in 0.4" before hitting the old crust. Looks like a mid-sized storm for the next 36h, I am guestimating 8-16" for my place. Quite cold last night. FWIW, I made reservations at Columbine cabins (northwest of Steamboat) yesterday afternoon, and they had received a foot of snow out of this at 8.7K, not too shabby. The near-by SNOTEL site of 'Elk River' reported 0.6" H2O, so the foot seems like a reasonable estimate (this was powder snow). I will report on skiing conditions upon my return later next week, but the base of 4-5' sounds already better than last year's...

After an early start before 2pm and an unexpected lull around 8pm, it has been snowing for more than 17h now, heaviest around 9-10pm when we briefly reached an estimated 2"/h. Break-down of measurements: 2.3/0.17" by 8pm, another 4.1/0.21" by 1am (MDT), and another 3.1/0.19" by 7am. As temperatures have dropped from close to freezing before the snow kicked in to 6F this morning, the snow has gotten denser, packing down the snow pack in the process for an anemic increase of 6.5" out of 9.5" snowfall. May it snow all day to push totals beyond a foot... Before I forget, snow has picked up again right around 7am.

The temperature dropped to -2F before midnight, setting a new record for the23rd, but I have been a few degrees colder on the 24th. Snow became fairly dense yesterday (cold air), and ended just before 7pm MDT. Cleared out and hit below 0F before 9pm, followed by about 6h of near/below 0F temperatures, then clouding over and a few flurries by this morning, along with about 6F. Evening snow depth averaged 18.5", a net increase of 8" from pre-storm depth. Storm totals since Friday: 0.80/12.3". Off to ski at Coumbine this morning...

Not much more at Columbine, with about 1" overnight. Nice skiing conditions, though, much better than last year, even though the pack is subpar with about 4' (that earlier report was probably too exuberant, but there was that snow on Friday).

This is interesting since the snowline on the ground both last night and this morning was around 7.5K. First inch melted on bare ground, but not the tail end of it (pretty much done by midnight). Here is hoping for more today - there is plenty of moisture in the air (dense fog), and the upper low is still west of us...

Snow intensity let up after 7pm, so we had more or less 1"/h for 7h. Surprisingly fluffy (1st measurement was at 5pm when I had 0.31/5.0" on snowboard - there may have been some ice underneath the snow that I did not catch), hence the small increase in snowpack (last night it was 1" higher than this morning). Sunny and chilly (20F) this morning, with cloud deck below 7K.

Looking forward to 1'+ over next 36h, had hoped for twice that, but this will be a nice addition. Will get very cold with this, probably below 0F at night, which is not a common event in April. The most exposed of our three local ponds/lakes has melted out, this should be cold enough to refreeze it.
4/9/2013 7:00 AM 0.45 5.2 M 10.0 M Tmax: 48; Tmin: 6 (18 at midnight MST was calendar day Tmin yesterday and will be Tmax today). FroPa in late afternoon was followed by a decent period of initially wet snow (no rain in gage) - recorded 1.5/0.19" by 8:30pm MDT, with close to 1"/h at that time and upper 20sF. By 1am MDT, another 1.9/0.21" had fallen, still surprisingly dense, and dwindling to flurries by then. At that time we had dropped to 18F. Over the next 6h, another 1.8" fell, but by then we had switched to fluff (0.05") and temperatures around 7F. Here is hoping for at least another 5" through the day today... Snowpack jumped back up from a trace, since the 'beached whales' are still counted, now that coverage is back up to 100%.
4/10/2013 7:00 AM 0.22 4.1 M 11.5 M Tmax: 16 during day (18 from previous midnight); Tmin; -6F (ties monthly record from 12 April 1997, it also hit -2F by midnight MST last night). The Tmax smashed my previous daily Tmax record (31). Noticable gradient in yesterday's snowfall, with the lower canyon hitting the jackpot, I have heard of at least one 21" report for the storm in Pinebrook Hills! Oh well, sure looks wintery everywhere from the divide down to Boulder... Our measurable snow ended around 8pm, with only some flurries continuing as the thermometer plunged into rare sub-zero values for about 10h (only April 10-12, 1997, and April 1, 2008 did this before in April at this site). My storm totals were 0.67/9.3", corrected a typo in this morning's report, it was 0.22", not 0.27" in last 24h. April is off to a good start with over 18" so far.

While I was on travel, I did get two neighbors to take snowfall measurements, and then prorated the liquid that accumulated in the gage upon my return. In any case, we were apparently getting 2"+/h yesterday morning, with the snow starting at some point around 3am (1.5" by 5:15am MDT). This event looks like it wants to outperform all others this season. Snowdepth is an estimate.

Amazingly cold for April, and we got a few days to go! Storm total from early Monday through Tuesday morning: 21.8/1.32". Now that I am able to see the snowpack in daylight (after returning from trip), it is very clear that is 'infected' with lots of dust, highly unusual around here. Snowing lightly this morning, with temperatures in the mid 10sF. Hope to see more for tomorrow's report. Snowpack is still settling.

After missing out on much of the snow bands around mid-day, the upslope surge in the evening provided for several hours of moderate (1"/h+) snowfall. Snow pretty much ended by 10pm MDT, followed by clearing skies (near-full moon), and my latest sub-zero reading on record. At some point I will gather how many daily records were broken this month, it will be substantial. Storm totals since Monday morning: 31.2/1.81", another fluffy storm! Monthly total so far: 52.8", 2nd only to 2009 for April 1-17 (keeping track of calendar totals). FWIW, the snowfall total since February 1 is now at 117.1" - only 2003 beat that (by 23"+ because of that one famous March storm). Of course, the liquid content of just over 7.2" is "only" the 5th highest since 1991, with 2003 reaching 11.86" for 1 February through April 17. Anyway, much better than last year... Snow depth peaked at 23" last evening, with yesterday's snow being virtually dust free.

One last day below freezing (five in a row sets a new record for the latest such occurrence by more than one month!); windy overnight, with spill-over snow (hard to differentiate from snow blowing off trees, but there was definitely real snow in the air and a uniform increase of fresh snow on the crusty top that had formed during day, in addition to clumps falling off trees that were closer to their bases). Snow top is still white, will be interesting to see when dust comes through.

4/23/2013 5:30 AM 1.24 16.7 M 24.0 M Tmax: 38 (early morning before cold front settled in); Tmin: 6F. Breakdown of observations: snow showers in AM were handicapped by temperatures around or even above freezing ahead of the cold front around 10am. By 3pm, a neighbor measured 4.0" on a table which is a low-ball estimate compared to a snowboard. By 7:30pm, another 5.5" had fallen, with snow coming down at 2"/h around this time. Total liquid by now: 0.71". As the snow kept dumping thru evening, another 5" (0.25") accumulated by 10:15pm - around this time the temperature had dropped into the low 10sF, and crystals switched from fluffy dendrites to much denser needles. The final 2.2" were recorded by this morning's early reading at 5:30am (0.28"). Overall snow depth is an estimate (as well as the highest of the season). I am on travel, just like last week, but observations were taken by my wife (except the first one that was taken by my neighbor, hence no liquid).

Snowing steadily at just under 1"/h this morning, with 21F by 7am. My all-time record lowest Tmax for May is 29F, my lowest Tmin is 12F. Both records will be at least challenged in next 24h. Snow depth rebounded from a trace. Formerly open spots had 7" on the ground this morning.

No rain was observed. Forgot to mention that one of our lakes is still frozen (!), and that the chorus frogs are out in force at our seasonal lake that is still partially frozen. The deafening concert by the frogs was the loudest in memory, and also quite late for the season (they typically get going as the snow melts in late March/early April).

Whole system moved northeast to hit Lyons that evening. Hail stones were up to 3/8" (dime sized?), but there was snow mixed in, so I am counting this as snow. Here is hoping for more tonight...

Used sheltered (shaded) spots to determine how much had fallen. Three-day total liquid was 1.70", or the 4th 1"+ event in as many weeks. This is the first such event that did not end up as more than a foot of snow. Heavy frost this morning. Last ice-covered lake in neighborhood broke up over last few days, but still has floating 'icebergs'(!). No aspen have leafed out, nor have we seen any Pasque flowers yet - more than a month behind schedule.

6/29/2013 7:00 AM 0.60 0.0 M 0.0 M Tmax: 83 (3rd and last day in 80s); Tmin: 45. Major thunderstorm around 5:45pm that was pretty much over by the time we got home at 6:30pm (MDT), dropping 0.38". Second round took a long time coming, with about one hour of continuous lightning to our east and north (there were cells moving in from Estes Park and Loveland) - at its peak, just before 10 pm, there was about one lightning strike per second. By 10pm, it made it up to us with pea-sized hail and heavy rain that was over by about 10:20pm MDT (0.21"). Temperatures dropped to near 50F in this second round. A decisive end to the pollen season, yippee! Had not removed the inner funnel for this, so a small amount of hail may have bounced out of the gage. Sadly, a house about 1.5 miles north of us got hit by lightning and was severely damaged by fire and subsequent fire extinguishment (nobody home, no pets). Before I forget, 0.60" on the 28th of June also smashes the previous daily precip record by 0.38" (this record started in 1990).

Nice cool end to the month, with 0.87" of moisture in the last three days - here is to getting some more this week! Might be noteworthy that this is the 2nd daily record in 3 days (old record for June 30th was 0.13").

Had almost given up on this one - this ended up being a historic event, mainly from 8:45pm-11pm when about 2.23" had fallen, probably about an 1" in 20' from 9:20-9:40pm. Still drizzling this morning, having added 0.06" since 1am MDT. Unfortunately, our new roof sprung a leak, so the joy about this bounty of moisture is somewhat muted... P.S.: 2.42" for the 14th of July (midnight reading MST) is a new record for July, and only 0.03" below my August record. Otherwise, only December (2006), March (2003) and April (1997, 2009) have seen higher calendar-daily totals, and those were all snow storms. So this is my 2nd highest daily rainfall total on record since June 1990.

I hiked from Brainard Lake to Mount Audobon yesterday morning and got graupeled on at the peak around noon, followed by increasing rain on way down, including heavy rain in the Krummholz zone, turning the trail into 2" of rushing water. Oh well, a bit more than I bargained for, but at least the lightning strikes stayed to the east.

BTW, the 3rd of August has the highest probability of rain in my record: 19 out of 24 times, or 79% - the 4th of August and 28th of July share 2nd rank with 18 out of 24 (75%) odds.

Key events: intense thunderstorm from about 2-2:45pm MDT dropped 0.63" (but no hail!), and killed off a final high temperature above70F (lowest since the 1st of the month). After some drizzle in early evening, a second storm dropped another 0.34" by 8:40pm MDT (about 0.25" in half an hour), followed by a longer, more moderate period of rain (and occasional lightning) by 1am MDT this morning. Drizzle and upper 40s this morning after another 0.13" since then. Looking forward to at least another inch or two of rain within the next six days or so!

Temperature range also close to a record low (5F).

Will fill details in later, set a new 24h precipitation record, finally beating the wettest day of the 2003 snowstorm (and for the period of record since June 1990). 3d total also a record with 7.24". Still raining, dense fog, roads thru Jamestown are apparently closed due to mud slides, and the strangest thing was the repeated thunderstorms that tracked thru last night around midnight, with close lightning strikes, but NO HAIL. Last night (after midnight) was when Jamestown got flooded, and a mudslide claimed one life right below the 2003 fire scars. Based on a Weather Underground Station (Plugnickel in Jamestown), close to 7" fell in 24h (was going to double-check it, but the station is currently AWOL).

For only the 2nd time since 1990 our basement flooded from all the moisture (11.59" in 4 days). Meanwhile, the total since 1am MDT was only 0.27", so it is winding down.

Things are starting to settle down a bit, power has been restored for more than 12h now, and there appears to be one passage way out of here that allows us to get to Boulder without doubling or tripling the distance. I am astonished that there is still runoff through our property almost one day after it stopped raining. The big concern is tomorrow where some models advertise two more inches of rain around here - for once I am rooting for less than that.
