Accumulation probably stopped by 2400 MDT. My best estimate is that snow fell very lightly off and on from 0000 to 0600 MDT on 25 Oct.
At 0700 MDT, 5.1" on the ground (max measured). Precip up to 1900 MDT on 24 Oct (when changeover to snow began) was 0.24". After that, the melted equivalent was .58", for a 24-h total of 0.82". |

Snow resumed very early 12 Mar and continued with embedded showers thru obs time. At 0700 MDT 12 Mar 2013, S-, 1.5 miles visibility, 27 deg, 4.3" on the ground with a water content of .34.

A few drops of rain with lightning in clouds at 1800 MDT 28 June 2013. Trace precip. TRW-, large drops, 1913-1918 MDT, precip .03". Thunder with hail 1/4 to 3/4" in diameter 2030-2035 MDT but very few raindrops. Hail bounced out of gauge. Only a trace precip measured. TRW+ began 2144 MDT. Hail 2146-2202 MDT 1/4-5/8" diameter, enough to almost cover patio deck. Heavy rain ended 2202 MDT, hail at 2205L. Frequent lightning, almost all in-cloud, about a flash per second. TRW- continued until 2240L. Precip +.72, of which at least .60" fell in 18 min. Vegetable garden suffered moderate damage. Enough leaves stripped from trees to require raking the next day. Worst hailstorm in our neighborhood since 24 June 2006. |

I was out of the country on this day. My wife made precip measurements. Very light rain or drizzle began ~0700 MDT 10 Sep 2013. Precip increased to R- (small drops) ~0900 MDT, then R thru 1130 MDT, then L- by noon and quitting by 1300 MDT. 0.25" in rain gauge at 1500 MDT. Darkening skies by 16L. R-- began ~1800 MDT, increased to R- by 2000 MDT and probably continued thru most of the evening. R/R+ 2330 MDT 10 Sep thru 0030 MDT 11 Sep. Very light rain or drizzle likely thru dawn on 11 Sep. The next precip measurement was 1.27 at 1100 MDT Wed 11 Sep. Based on nearby CoCoRAHS measurements, I estimate that 1.28 fell in the 24 h ending 0700 MDT 11 Sep (based on the estimate that 0.24" precip fell between 0700 and 1100 MDT on 11 Sep. |

Precip in progress at 0700 MDT 11 Sep 2013, alternating mostly between R- and drizzle during the morning. 1.27" in the gauge at 1100 MDT (since 1500 MDT 10 Sep), of which I estimate .24 fell since 0700 MDT 11 Sep. R and R- during the afternoon and early evening probably amounted to ~0.8” 1100-1830 MDT. Rainfall became heavy after 1830 MDT and fell at the rate of 0.75 to 1.00” per hour for the next 4-5 hours. Lightning and thunder 2145-2210 MDT. At 2100 MDT, 3.69" in gauge (10-h amount). That was enough to flood the laundry room from the outside. Water draining off the roof collected and pooled on the sidewalk by the basement steps, then overflowed and came cascading down the stairs. The drain at the bottom of the stairs couldn’t handle this much water, so it flowed under the door and into the laundry room, where (fortunately) it went into the drain there. All creeks and streams in Boulder were flooding by early on 12 Sep. The heavy rain was over by 0000 MDT 12 Sep, but light pcpn persisted probably until after 0400 MDT, when it became very light. RW-- likely at obs time (0700 MDT 12 Sep). Another 4.10" in the gauge at 0845 MDT 12 Sep, of which I estimate .30 fell between 0700 and 0845 MDT. The 24-h estimated total ending at 0700 MDT 12 Sep is thus 0.24 + 3.69 + 3.80 = 7.73". This amount of rainfall far exceeds the previous 24-h record amount for Boulder (4.50"), where records date back to 1893. |

Excessive rainfall continued for a second day. Rainfall light at 0700 MDT 12 Sep 2013, but RW+ 0800-0820L, then mostly R- until late morning. 4.10" in the gauge at 0845 MDT. Of that amount I estimate that .30 of that fell between 0700 and 0845 MDT. At 0845 MDT, the laundry room seemed okay but in the basement the TV room was flooded and the carpet was wet in Mike’s old bedroom and in the hallway leading to it. The storeroom had 1/2” standing water throughout. Gina called State Farm. She also discovered that the kitchen skylight was leaking, and put out a bucket to catch the drip. Skies darkened ~1115 MDT, and rain became at least moderate. At 1245 MDT, the tornado sirens were blaring, rainfall was R/R+, and this continued for the rest of the afternoon. A north-south band of heavy rain set up over Boulder, with max reflectivities of 35-40 dBZ. Rain was heaviest 1530-1630 MDT. There was no lightning or thunder. By late afternoon, travel N-S across Boulder was very difficult because of numerous flooded streets. Table Mesa Dr. west of Broadway was closed. R- 1730-1745 MDT, then R+ 1700-1845 MDT, R-1845-1900 MDT, a brief spurt of R+ ~1930 MDT, tapering off to very light pcpn by 2200 MDT. 4.65" in the gauge at 2130 MDT, by which time the basement was completely flooded, 2-3” deep in the boys’ old bedrooms. The laundry room had flooded twice more, and there was water in more than half the carpet in my den. The kitchen skylight sprang two more leaks. Precip was mostly very light after 2200 MDT 12 Sep, except for an RW- ~0400 MDT 13 Sep. At 0645 MDT 13 Sep, another 0.35" in the rain guage (since 2130 MDT 12 Sep). The rain had stopped. The estimated 24-h precip, ending 0700 MDT 13 Sep is thus 0.30 + 4.65 + 0.35 = 5.30" |

I was out of the country, and my wife was out of town on 15 Sep. When she returned, she measured 2.26" in my rain gauge at 1125 MDT 16 Sep 2013, of which I estimate .20 fell before 0700 MDT on 15 Sep and .02 fell after 0700 MDT on 16 Sep, leaving 2.04" for the 24-hour total ending 0700 MDT 16 Sep. I relied on John Brown’s weather notes and CoCoRAHS for allocating the 2.26” of precip among the three days. Substantial rainfall occurred Sunday morning 15 Sep, probably starting by 0700 MDT. Heaviest rain (some R+) 1000-1230 MDT, slowly tapering off and ending by 1400 MDT. The morning rainfall was enough to increase flow rates in local drainages, but apparently not enough to cause renewed flooding. After an afternoon respite, R- and some R, very small drops, resumed ~1700 MDT and continued, becoming mostly drizzle after dark and continuing at least intermittently all night. Drizzle at obs time (0700 MDT 16 Sep). |
