The one in the early PM had a sudden strong short duration west wind with pelting rain, maybe for only a couple minutes. Then a break of maybe 5 minutes. Then the same pelting rain from the east, very short also. Then in the evening around 6 PM, we had very strong sudden high winds from the west for maybe 15 minutes, gradually decreasing over maybe a half hour period.

Noticed that the Rifle NWS, only about 4 miles to the SE, received twice as much rain as us. Our horse pasture grass is quite green alredy, whereas last year at this time, it was not green at all.
4/15/2013 7:00 AM T T M M M Light 'wintry mix' started sometime before 6:00 AM. Not enough to measure by 7:00 AM, but light snow continues even now at 8:15 AM, with maybe 0.5" accumulation now. Hope this continues as this is perfect for all the surrounding hay fields, which had been greening up nicely, now covered in white. This is the day we planned to start irrigating but it looks like they will keep the water in Rifle Gap Reservoir and let the level build for a while.
4/16/2013 6:15 AM 0.52 1.8 M 1.0 M A storm hung over us all day yesterday and delivered a wintry mix, then went north at around 7:00 PM. Measured, after melting some slush with water in the 3" rain gage, 0.52" at 8:00 PM. Also, at 8:00 PM, swept about an inch of wet snow/slush off the cars. No more accumulation after that. The storm brought quite a variety from small flakes to giant flakes and mostly ended with light rain. We never had accumulation on the asphalt driveway. This morning the ground and roofs are covered in white, and cars covered with heavy frost.
4/17/2013 7:00 AM 0.34 5.4 M 5.5 M Snow started coming down lightly around 8:30 PM and continues thru report time. This is a dry snow as none of it had built up on the inside or outside of the gage. The gage seemed to have collected all that fell. The intensity of the snowfall seems to be increasing. It is very calm and it appears that there was absolutely no wind during the night. This will really help the soil and hay crop. Visibility is now down to about 1/4 mile at 7:24 AM.
4/18/2013 6:00 AM 0.18 3.1 M 2.5 M All of this precipitation (0.18") came in the form of heavy snow in the early morning mostly between 7 and 10:00 AM. Snow became quite heavy and wet and 'packed down' the earlier dry snow. By later in the day, much of the accumulation melted from the solar heat. The gage water was collected and measured at 6:00 PM. Temperature is now 17. The surrounding mountains, hills and hay fields are still covered with variable amounts of snow. Most of the snow on lower elevation, south-facing, hills melted from the solar heat.

9/27/2013 7:00 AM 0.27 M M M M Very unusual - found the rain gage funnel had blown off the gage during the night - located it in the deep grass about 20' NW of the gage. We had lots of wind yesterday but noticed that the NWS (Rifle) had a record of a severe wind episode around midnight with gusts to 55.
9/28/2013 7:00 AM 0.21 M M M M The rain gage included melted gropple accumulated in about 5 minutes at 7:10 PM last evening. The frozen stuff built up some in the funnel last night, but had melted by report time. The accumulated liquid had some beautiful icy crystalline structures gleaming in the sunlight this morning. The gage contained only 0.10" of liquid immediately after the gropple event, which included 0.04" of earlier rain; so I estimate that the precipitation accumulated from the gropple was around 0.11". Some still frozen gropple remained in the grass this morning and the vehicles were covered with heavy frosty/ice. It looks like the garden may have taken a severe hit with frost.
