Where there is vegetation the snow on the ground is about 2.0" deep but it didn't accumulate much on places where there is bare dirt . . . the county road for example. There was quite a bit of wind with the snow. |

Experienced both the beauty and the beast of winter in the past 24 hours. The surface of the snow here is covered in flat, delicate, ornate, nearly clear crystals of ice measuring from 1/4 to nearly 3/4 of an inch across. These crystals stand nearly vertical to the surface of the snow and give a "fuzzy" appearance to the snow. When the angle of the sun is right these crystals reflect the light and look as if someone liberally sprinkled sparkling diamonds all over the snow field. This is especially visible when the sun is at low angles. As I walked in the moonlight last night these same crystals looked to me like thousands of tiny flashbulbs going off in the dark. Really beautiful! The "beast" was that our well finally succumbed to all of the sub-zero temperatures we've had and I spent a majority of the day thawing frozen well components. |

Light snow falling this morning. Yesterday between 10 AM and 11 AM light snowfall drifting to the ground appeared to have some huge flakes among some smaller ones. Closer examination showed that the huge flakes were a conglomeration of smaller flakes that had adhered together. Warm temperatures yesterday rapidly reduced our snowpack here (2.0" in one day). Surface of the snow was slushy yesterday afternoon but was crusty enough this morning that I had to cut a "pilot hole" in the snow with a trowel before I could get my snow stick in to measure. |

The snowpack is beginning to disappear from sun and wind exposed ridges in this area but it is staying pretty stable here in the valley. Some of the ridges have deep cornices that have developed on the lee sides and so do some of the ravines so there is still quite a bit of snow to melt yet around us. |

Rain gauge measurement this morning is low. Very windy conditions yesterday and last night caused some of the snowfall to miss the gauge. I would estimate 0.04" to be closer to what actually fell. New snowfall amount (0.04) is also an estimate. Warm temps and wind combined to cause a lot of melting the past 3 days. I am still measuring an average of 15.0" total snow on the ground here in the valley but I would estimate that 25% of the ground in this neighborhood (ridge tops and sun exposed hills) is only covered by about 1/2 inch of new snow this morning. I am reporting the SWE for 15.0" but that would be a little high if you take the entire surrounding area into consideration. I would estimate that 75% of the overall area is still covered with an average of 15.0" of snow. |

I am certain that both rain gauge and new snowfall measurements are less than what actually fell but due to winds and blowing snow in the afternoon it's impossible to tell how much.
