Submitted 9/21/13. Lost Power Thursday afternoon 9/12. Flooding Little Thompson River debris caused a tree to short out power line running over river. Only bridge in and out of area under water. Some visible flood damage to ranch buildings across the river from us. Friday upon arising, discovered that the phone was dead. The river had risen even more dramatically. Neighbors that fronted the river had lost maybe 200' of land that sloped to the original stream bed. The bed is now probably 300' wide, filled with a torrent of brown water. Part of a house caught in the trees that once lined the river. The house was swept away in the night from about 1/2 mile upstream. I don't believe it was the heavy rain that was the total cause of this massive erosion. Several dams ( 6 or 7) containing ponds and reservoirs of upstream communities failed creating a surge at about 3:00 AM that did the damage, in my humble opinion. |

Submitted 9/21/13. Also see 9/13 entry. Rain let up. River had taken out ~ 1/2 mile of road approaching only bridge out. Found out neighbor Tom and Candy lost home and business. Had to be rescued by local volunteer fire and neighbor. National Guard personnel carrier and helicopter rescue and evacuation in process. My guess, most homes in area undamaged except those low and near river. From what I saw most people do not want to evacuate and just want to be able to go out and return with supplies - food, fuel, animal feed, etc. once the approach to the bridge is made passable. The bridge itself was undamaged. Even with heavy local highway damage, there is a way to and through the heavily damaged town of Lyons. |
