I mentioned one of the loudest claps of thunder I ever heard yesterday early, I discovered what it hit. An already dead pine tree. I found chunks of wood laying on the ground in several locations, some over 50' from the tree. There was a lot of green foliage on the ground underneath the tree from a large poison oak vine growing on it. If that strike had hit a live tree it certainly would have killed it.
