Showers developed behind a strong cold front that moved through the area during the early afternoon hours on Thursday. Precipitation did not begin until after 3:30 pm when I left for Northern Illinois University in DeKalb for a conference, and traveled through areas of heavy rain to the north of Macomb along the route. |

Significant rainfall occurred during the afternoon hours on Sunday, 11 November 2012 with the passage of a cold front. Unfortunately, we forgot to read and empty the gauge on Monday (today's date). The total amount reported can be found on a multi-day accumulation reported on 11/19/12. My estimate for the actual total on 11/12/12 (from the previous day of course)is approximately 0.65" |

Rainfall began after 8 am today but because of our failure to empty the gauge from a previous precipitation event on Sunday, 11 November 2012, today's rainfall added to the overall total. The 0.00" amount reported is accurate as it reflects continued dry weather between the two events, and actual rainfall from Monday, 19 November 2012 (today) came after 8:00 am and was reported as a multi-day total. |

Dense fog blanketed the area last night, with visibilities reduced to much less than 1/4 mile. The fog lifted/burned off by late morning. It was so foggy last night that water droplets covered everything such that it located like it had rained. In fact, the rain gauge actually had .01 to .02 inches in it from condensation that collected. |

A line of showers and thunderstorms (not bad for Thanksgiving) developed and moved through the region ahead of a strong cold front. While there were several cloud-to-ground lightning strikes, the strongest storms passed north of Macomb, thus the rather low rainfall total. Following the frontal passage, temperatures plummeted from our high of 65 down into the 30's with very strong gusty NW winds kicking in around 10 pm last night. Winds continued through the night but are not reaching wind advisory criteria. |

Mainly light rain and drizzle last night as the main bulk of the precipitation passed further east of the Macomb area. Thunder this morning at 7 am followed by sustained heavier rainfall. I just pulled the inner tube anticipating a quick changeover to snow later today. The surface low passed over the area (or just to the SE) around two hours ago, with temperatures falling through the upper 30's following an early morning high of 44. Temperatures in the 50's within 50-75 miles. |

Rain changed first to sleet briefly then over to all snow shortly after 10 am on Thursday, with heavy snow accumulating at a rate of an inch per hour. Snow was accompanied by 40 mph sustained winds with gusts as high as 54 mph measured at the Macomb airport. I forgot to take the funnel off so the liquid equivalent is likely somewhat underestimated, along with the fact that the snow was coming down horizontally. I melted the accumulated snow tonight (now last night). I did not take a core and melt it, just the storm total snowfall that collected in the gauge. As I reported on Thursday night in significant weather, the heavy snow and powerful winds created whiteout conditions which made travel outside of the city impossible and roads quickly became nearly impassable. Numerous vehicles slid (or drove) off the road, leaving motorists (including school buses and kids) stranded for several hours. People had to spend the night at motels here in Macomb and surrounding areas. Roads are greatly improved on Friday but it is still somewhat treacherous and icy out there. While obviously difficult to measure, I had five inches at my house, which is located very close to the university and our station. There is a solid foot-high drift over next to the station. Friday was sunny and cold with temperatures suppressed by the fresh snowpack, limiting melting. The time listed for precipitation beginning marks the time of Thursday's precipitation report, as rain was ongoing at the time. |

Light snow has just begun. Will submit a later report when snow ends if this occurs during the day, otherwise will cover it on tomorrow's report. Will measure old snowfall later as well as remaining snowpack has been diminishing slowly, especially with some sunshine and temperatures near freezing on Thursday (yesterday). |

Light dusting of snow, primarily from this morning, which is why I read the gauge after it stopped. The 5-inch snowfall from Thursday, 20 December 2012 was totally wind-driven by sustained 40 mph winds, so there are plenty of bare spots mixed with areas that drifted. I measured several places with 3 inches remaining today, while other areas are essentially snow-free. The water equivalent on a 3-inch core is 0.37" but I am reporting 0.24" since only about 2/3 of the ground is still covered with snow. |

Light snow falling and covering the ground. Snow began recently. Precipitation is associated with a frontal boundary and pre-frontal trough (according to NWS AFD) in conjunction with a southern stream storm system. Macomb lies on the northern edge of the precipitation shield but snow appears to be coming down quickly. Current forecast calls for an inch but conditions look worse than that. Time will tell. |

Overnight rainfall total. Snowpack is being compacted and disappearing quickly. Still raining so it looks like substantial precipitation will fall from this storm. |

It rained from Friday night/early Saturday morning through early afternoon on Saturday before stopping. The sun came out for a short time. Rain started back up again Saturday night and is continuing at the time of observation. The 3.0" snowpack is almost completely gone except for a few more protected (shaded) spots, and the numerous snowpiles from plowing. |

Rain continued falling for much of the day on Sunday, bringing our 3-day total to over 1.5 inches. All of the snow has disappeared except for piles left behind by shoveling or plowing. Fog developed Sunday night but dissipated with a brief rain shower as the cold front approached. Today (Monday) is gloomy, chilly, and wet with drizzle. I would not be surprised to see snow flurries at times during the day. Not a very nice day out there. Stay inside, stay dry, and stay warm! |

Happy Independence Day! No rain thus far in July, our first extended stretch of dry weather. It is a beautiful summer day here in Western Illinois to celebrate the birthplace of our great nation. I pay honor to those who have sacrificed their lives for the just cause of freedom, and to those still on duty in very dangerous places. May God continue to protect them. |

Nocturnal showers and thunderstorms developed in a very warm and humid unstable air mass. Activity has continued into the morning hours, with radar still showing scattered showers and storms throughout western Illinois, although it has been dry for the past hour in Macomb. Activity appears to be winding down. 1st precipitation this month! |

All day rain in an overrunning pattern north of a warm front and low pressure system currently located near Kansas City. Steady long-lasting light to occasionally moderate rainfall with no embedded thunderstorms in the Macomb area. Rain began in the middle of the night and continued through midday with skies remaining cloudy. Once again, for the 4th day in a row, temperatures have only reached the lower 70's, almost unheard of for late July. A great stretch of summer weather easy on the budget without the necessity for air conditioning. |

It has been dry all day long (Wednesday 7/31) so all the rainfall is from Tuesday noon until Wednesday morning (10 am). |

Very cool morning with new record low set at Burlington, Iowa of 48, breaking the old mark of 50 set in 2004. Macomb's low was also 48. Cool Canadian high pressure centered over the area providing clear skies and dry air (low dew points) resulting in excellent radiational cooling. |

Our extended stretch of dry weather continues, with very little measurable rainfall so far in August. High pressure remains in control, and will continue for the next several days up to a week. Our recent stretch of very cool mornings in the 50's and afternoon highs in the 70's, both below normal, will give way to a significant return of summer heat for the first time this month. Drought impacts beginning to show up in terms of low stream flow, dry ground, lawns not growing, etc. Crops around the area do look good though, thanks to above normal precipitation earlier in the growing season.
