Unfortunately, we forgot to read and empty the gauge on Monday (today's date). The total amount reported can be found on a multi-day accumulation reported on 11/19/12. My estimate for the actual total on 11/12/12 (from the previous day of course)is approximately 0.65"

11/19/2012 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Rainfall began after 8 am today but because of our failure to empty the gauge from a previous precipitation event on Sunday, 11 November 2012, today's rainfall added to the overall total. The 0.00" amount reported is accurate as it reflects continued dry weather between the two events, and actual rainfall from Monday, 19 November 2012 (today) came after 8:00 am and was reported as a multi-day total.
11/20/2012 8:00 AM 0.08 M M M M Widespread light rain developed shortly after 8 am (Monday 11/19/12) in association with a passing upper air disturbance/short wave trough. Rainfall ended by early afternoon and partial clearing occurred during the late afternoon, allowing fog to develop overnight.
11/21/2012 6:00 PM 0.00 0.0 M M M Dense fog blanketed the area last night, with visibilities reduced to much less than 1/4 mile. The fog lifted/burned off by late morning. It was so foggy last night that water droplets covered everything such that it located like it had rained. In fact, the rain gauge actually had .01 to .02 inches in it from condensation that collected.

11/23/2012 11:00 AM 0.02 M M M M A line of showers and thunderstorms (not bad for Thanksgiving) developed and moved through the region ahead of a strong cold front. While there were several cloud-to-ground lightning strikes, the strongest storms passed north of Macomb, thus the rather low rainfall total. Following the frontal passage, temperatures plummeted from our high of 65 down into the 30's with very strong gusty NW winds kicking in around 10 pm last night. Winds continued through the night but are not reaching wind advisory criteria.

12/20/2012 9:55 AM 0.51 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Mainly light rain and drizzle last night as the main bulk of the precipitation passed further east of the Macomb area. Thunder this morning at 7 am followed by sustained heavier rainfall. I just pulled the inner tube anticipating a quick changeover to snow later today. The surface low passed over the area (or just to the SE) around two hours ago, with temperatures falling through the upper 30's following an early morning high of 44. Temperatures in the 50's within 50-75 miles.
12/21/2012 6:00 PM 0.27 5.0 M 5.0 M Rain changed first to sleet briefly then over to all snow shortly after 10 am on Thursday, with heavy snow accumulating at a rate of an inch per hour. Snow was accompanied by 40 mph sustained winds with gusts as high as 54 mph measured at the Macomb airport. I forgot to take the funnel off so the liquid equivalent is likely somewhat underestimated, along with the fact that the snow was coming down horizontally. I melted the accumulated snow tonight (now last night). I did not take a core and melt it, just the storm total snowfall that collected in the gauge. As I reported on Thursday night in significant weather, the heavy snow and powerful winds created whiteout conditions which made travel outside of the city impossible and roads quickly became nearly impassable. Numerous vehicles slid (or drove) off the road, leaving motorists (including school buses and kids) stranded for several hours. People had to spend the night at motels here in Macomb and surrounding areas. Roads are greatly improved on Friday but it is still somewhat treacherous and icy out there. While obviously difficult to measure, I had five inches at my house, which is located very close to the university and our station. There is a solid foot-high drift over next to the station. Friday was sunny and cold with temperatures suppressed by the fresh snowpack, limiting melting. The time listed for precipitation beginning marks the time of Thursday's precipitation report, as rain was ongoing at the time.

12/29/2012 12:00 PM T T T 2.0 0.24 Light dusting of snow, primarily from this morning, which is why I read the gauge after it stopped. The 5-inch snowfall from Thursday, 20 December 2012 was totally wind-driven by sustained 40 mph winds, so there are plenty of bare spots mixed with areas that drifted. I measured several places with 3 inches remaining today, while other areas are essentially snow-free. The water equivalent on a 3-inch core is 0.37" but I am reporting 0.24" since only about 2/3 of the ground is still covered with snow.

12/31/2012 9:15 AM T T M M M Light snow falling and covering the ground. Snow began recently. Precipitation is associated with a frontal boundary and pre-frontal trough (according to NWS AFD) in conjunction with a southern stream storm system. Macomb lies on the northern edge of the precipitation shield but snow appears to be coming down quickly. Current forecast calls for an inch but conditions look worse than that. Time will tell.

Cool Canadian high pressure centered over the area providing clear skies and dry air (low dew points) resulting in excellent radiational cooling.

8/17/2013 8:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Our extended stretch of dry weather continues, with very little measurable rainfall so far in August. High pressure remains in control, and will continue for the next several days up to a week. Our recent stretch of very cool mornings in the 50's and afternoon highs in the 70's, both below normal, will give way to a significant return of summer heat for the first time this month. Drought impacts beginning to show up in terms of low stream flow, dry ground, lawns not growing, etc. Crops around the area do look good though, thanks to above normal precipitation earlier in the growing season. Dr. Tom at WIU

11/18/2012 11/19/2012 7:20 PM 2 0.73 M M Unfortunately, no one read and emptied the rain gauge although because of dry weather conditions, we reported 0.00 rainfall amounts on interim days. The cumulative total occurred on two days: Sunday, 11 November 2012 during the afternoon with the passage of a cold front, and Monday, 19 November 2012 associated with a short wave trough/upper air disturbance. Sunday's rainfall was far more significant, likely accounting for most of the 0.73" reported tonight. Today's rainfall was less than a tenth of an inch, as the Macomb airport ASOS recorded 0.08" during the day on Monday. Sorry about that - my fault as supervisor. Dr. Tom Williams
1/29/2013 1/30/2013 3:30 PM 2 1.49 T M Most of the rainfall occurred on Tuesday, 29 January 2013 in conjunction with a strong cold front that moved through the Macomb area early Tuesday afternoon. We had a few early morning storms but the bulk of the rain fell from midday through the early morning hours on Wednesday, 30 January. Thunderstorms moved in just before noon, but rain continued well behind the front as low pressure waves moved NE along the frontal boundary and enhanced/maintained precipitation. Temperatures have fallen from 63 ahead of the front to 26 currently, with occasional snow showers this afternoon. The last 0.01" represents melted snow and ice from the gauge.
3/12/2013 3/14/2013 5:00 PM 3 0.03 0.0 M It was still raining lightly at the observation time on Monday 3/11/13 but all precipitation ended by midday. Tuesday 3/12/13 saw instability snow showers develop by afternoon with a particularly heavy snow squall Tuesday night around 9 pm dusting the entire area with a tenth or two of snowfall, which melted Wednesday 3/13/13. Weather on both Wednesday and Thursday 3/13-14/13 has been dry. My apologies for failing to read the gauge sooner.
5/10/2013 5/24/2013 7:00 PM 15 1.08 M M Western Illinois University is on break and readings will only be sporadic at best through the summer months. I know storms occurred last Sunday (5/19/13) and Monday night (5/20/13) and the weather has been dry since then, but going back before that time I am not sure. Obviously there had to be some evaporation during the two-week period when the gauge was not checked. Sorry about this; if I had thought of it sooner, I would have checked more frequently since I was around, although not in the office on most days. Dr. Tom Williams (TB-Williams@wiu.edu)
5/26/2013 6/01/2013 9:30 AM 7 3.10 M M Primary shower and thunderstorm activity occurred Thursday night 5/30/13 and Friday morning 5/31/13.
6/5/2013 6/18/2013 9:45 AM 14 1.98 M M No precipitation fell in the past 24+ hours since I returned home from my annual storm chase vacation. Thunderstorms responsible for most of the accumulated rainfall occurred on Saturday, 15 June 2013, both in the late morning and again in late afternoon/early evening with severe warned storms. Dr. Tom
6/20/2013 6/24/2013 12:00 PM 5 0.46 M M Line of thunderstorms moved through the Macomb area on Sunday afternoon 6/23/13. While short-lived, these storms are primarily responsible for the rainfall total. Earlier in the period, during the overnight hours Thursday night/early Friday morning (after midnight 6/21/13), brief showers occurred but I did not read the rain gauge until midday today. Dr. Tom
6/24/2013 6/26/2013 10:00 AM 3 0.71 M M Most of the rainfall occurred with heavy thunderstorms last night (6/25/13) between 8-9 pm (see Significant Weather Report) but showers also redeveloped after that and largely missed Macomb. Brief showers also fell on Monday (6/24/13) and Tuesday afternooon (6/25/13) with minimal accumulations at best. Dr. Tom
6/29/2013 7/01/2013 10:00 AM 3 0.05 M M Interesting results to say the least. This last weekend was a classic example of scattered instability showers that developed in response to an upper level low pressure area/cold pool aloft that steepened lapse rates. Depending on where you were located, some areas received short-lived but intense downpours while other areas remained dry. Guess who was mainly dry - our WIU rain gauge. I can tell you that Industry, IL, 12 miles south, received several periods of heavy rain on Saturday, 6/29/13 and also the east side of Macomb Saturday night around 6 pm. Then on Sunday, 6/30/13, showers developed in late afternoon and were found south of Macomb (water on the roads) but not in Macomb or in Industry. Wacky weather. Lots of showers in the area, minimal accumulation in the rain gauge. Mostly sunny and pleasantly cool with low humidity today, the 1st of July. I will enjoy it! Dr. Tom
7/26/2013 7/27/2013 8:00 AM 2 0.81 M M A light gentle rain fell most of the morning on Friday, 26 July through the observation period so I did not run over to measure and empty the rain gauge. Later in the day, a passing cold front triggered a rather intense if short-lived heavy shower which brought some significant rainfall to the area, really our first good rain of the entire month of July. The rain was more than heavy enough to cause street flooding. All of this happened in 30 minutes between 5 and 6 pm last night. By 6 pm, the line of storms had moved through the area and sunshine returned. Grilling out was not a problem! Dr. Tom
9/7/2013 9/09/2013 8:00 AM 3 0.09 M M All of the precipitation occurred on Saturday, 9/7/2013. It did not rain on Sunday, 9/8/2013. Some of it likely evaporated on Sunday due to the high temperatures.
