Normally, walking out to my rain gauge in January feels like walking across the Siberian frozen tundra. It is actually a pleasant morning here, with early morning temps already at 34 degrees and the sun beginning to make an appearance on the horizon. |

It's a little chillier out there this morning compared to yesterday, only 26 degrees. Nothing a warm cup of coffee won't fix, and can't complain knowing there's a major warmup around the corner tomorrow. |

Still drizzling. With a temp of 53 already this morning and some much-needed rain, I wouldn't be surprised to see an early spring flower or two start peeking out (before its dreams are crushed when winter shows up later this weekend). It even smells like spring out there this morning. |

Rain began Saturday night at 7:35pm. I went to bed at 11:30pm and as of that time, we still had only rain and not freezing rain or snow. Woke up at 6:50am to find a glaze of ice on everything, including the rain gauge. I don't see evidence of any snow falling overnight. |

Had two short instances of precipitation Sunday, once at approximately 1:30pm and one last evening between 8-9pm. Both resulted in a very brief dusting of snow appearing only on the coldest surfaces (concrete, stainless steel grill, vehicles). This morning there is still a glaze of ice on the same surfaces mentioned above. It definitely feels like winter this morning...quite a change from last week. |

It's another brisk morning, but nothing like what's forecast for early next week. Crazy to think that less than a week ago it was in the 50s, warm enough to open the windows for a bit to let some fresh air into the house. Definitely won't be doing that again anytime soon. Hardcore winter temps are on the horizon but it seems measurable snow will continue to elude us around here. |

Saw snowflakes coming down in the late afternoon/early evening Wednesday, but only for a short while and nothing stayed on the ground to even constitute calling it a dusting. The grass is still crunchy under my feet this morning, although at 26 degrees it's slightly warmer than it's been in the morning all week. Looking forward to seeing the 40s again tomorrow and Saturday before the temps bottom out early next week. |

It's a brisk 20 degrees in Mokena this morning and I'm looking forward to the warmup into the 40s later today and tomorrow. I only wish it would be for a longer duration before the temps bottom out and we have the coldest temps of the season Monday. |

When I went out to check the gauge, I actually heard two different neighbors curse loudly at the cold as they came outside to warm up their cars. Don't blame them - it is 0 with a -15 windchill here this morning. It's been quite awhile since we have experienced temps even close to this cold. |

Light flurries fell throughout the day yesterday, from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. However, none of it stayed on the ground and there was nothing in the gauge or on the snow board this morning. The few patches of snow already on the ground from snow over the weekend appear the same or even less than yesterday. It was like being in a snowglobe that had been shaken up...snowflakes floating all around us yesterday but nothing ever settled on the ground, at least not in Mokena. Friends in Oak Lawn and Des Plaines shared pictures of measurable snow last night, as additional snow bands moved through north of my location around 9pm. |

Precipitation began as sleet at 1:55pm on Sunday. It switched over to freezing rain at 3pm. There was a thin glaze of ice on roads and walkways by late afternoon but I didn't get a measurement of ice depth.
The rain and warm temps (47 already this morning) have completely melted the ice and the remainders of last week's snow, which was still visible in patchy spots Sunday morning.
No ice was on the rain gauge this morning; measurement of .18 was all liquid with no melting necessary. |

Tuesday: Precipitation began as sleet at 9am, switched to a sleet/rain mix at 10am, then a snow/sleet mix by 11:30am. It was all snow by 12:15pm.
