Observation Date Observation Time Precipitation Snowfall Snowfall SWE Snow Depth Snow SWE Notes
10/1/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Thinning clouds, calm, and 47.4° after pleasant high of 71.9° and early morning low of 46.7°. 1.8" rain for September made it the seventh month of nine in 2012 to have below average precip. With January and May the only to be above average, four consecutive months have now passed and created an ever-deepening deficit of SEVEN inches. Without intensive work, overseeding, and watering, our lawn would be a brown disaster.
10/2/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Pleasant opening to October with 69.2° and 47.1° but the usual lament is issued that no rain fell. 53.4° at present under partly sunny skies and no wind.
10/3/2012 7:00 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Torrential trace of rain early this morning left driveway and sidewalks damp but didn't register in gauge. High of 72.8°, low of 53.4°, and present reading of 58.8° under still but overcast skies.
10/4/2012 7:00 AM 0.02 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Still bailing out our near-disastrous rainfall of 0.02" yesterday. It was the greatest outburst of precipitation since mid-September when we were overwhelmed with 0.10". High of 53° and present/24-hour low amidst the downpours that ceased early this morning.
10/5/2012 7:00 AM 0.17 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Man the lifeboats and look for Noah or Bill Cosby! 0.17" rain fell yesterday evening. High of 79.7° yesterday before winds changed to the northwest at 1545 hours and plummeted temperatures to present/overnight low of 41.9°.
10/6/2012 7:00 AM 0.06 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Present temp of 29.8° under sunny skies is lowest in seven months but it beats the multitudes of 90°+ readings this past summer. High of but 43.1° yesterday was accompanied by cold rainfall of 0.06".
10/7/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Chilly day with strong west winds keeping high reading to only 48.7°, low at 29.6° and current temperature of 35°. Our torrid streak of rainy days came to a crashing end at three with a whopping total of 0.17" over 72 hours.
10/8/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Nippy with yesterday's high of 50.9°, overnight low of 28.9° and present reading of 29.3°. I'll issue my clarion call to the heavens again: we need rain! Normal for October is 3 1/4 inches and we've had but 1/5 of an inch in the inital week of the month.
10/9/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 41°, mostly sunny, and breezy from SSW after extremes of 60.4° and 29.3°. Rain in forecast for later today? I'll believe it when it falls on me during a bike ride.
10/10/2012 7:00 AM 0.26 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Holy moly, 0.26" rain last night after a day with a normal albeit windy high of 67.1°. Present reading of 33.8° is 24-hour low. 2.04" of precipitation in initial 40 days of meteorological autumn is still way below average.

10/12/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Windy day with high of 63.1° and low of 33.6° but, as usual, no rain. Sunny and 39.2° at present.
10/13/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 48.2° and no rain but W/NW skies darkening rapidly after day of 61.1° high and 37.9° low.
10/14/2012 7:00 AM 0.79 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.79" rain yesterday with warm temps (63.6° high, 48.2° low and 62° at present) but total was nowhere near what the forecasters predicted. It's been 86 days (and counting) since a daily total of over an inch of precip fell. In fact, in the last 14 MONTHS, only four such days have occurred.
10/15/2012 7:00 AM 0.09 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 At present 24-low temp of 41.3° under clear skies after high of 65.8° late yesterday morning. Disappointing total of 0.88" rain fell over the weekend despite media forecasts of from 1.5" to 3".
10/16/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Unremarkable day with 54.8° high, low of 39.9°, and present reading of 40.4° under breezy but sunny skies.
10/17/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Seasonal readings with yesterday's high of 65.6°, overnight low of 40.4Ü, and present temp of 52.8°. Strong southwest winds at present with scattered high clouds. Rain later today, anyone?
10/18/2012 7:00 AM 0.52 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Little more than a half inch of rain during day with high of 66.7° and low/present reading of 42.9°.

The 1/8 inch of rain from yesterday fell slowly and over many hours but most occurred last evening. October total of 2.04 is on pace for a normal month but yearly amount is still woefully behind historical averages.
10/20/2012 7:00 AM 0.06 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 With high of 50.5°, low of 37.2° and present temp of 37.5°, readings are more reminiscent of early November. Misty and dank this morning with no wind.
10/21/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 38.8°, sunny, and moderate SE wind after extremes of 53° and 36.3°. After three days with rain that drenched New Lenox with almost three-quarters of an inch, monsoon season seems to have abated.
10/22/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Cloudy, warm winds from southeast, and 55.5° after extremes of 38.8° and 65.4°.

10/24/2012 7:00 AM 0.32 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Unseasonlly reading (and overnight low) of 57.2° at present under hazy skies after pleasant day with one-third of an inch of rain and a 66.9° high. With much work and recent rains, lawn is nearly back to what it was in early May.
10/25/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Unseasonally high readings of yesterday's 75.3°, overnight low of 57.2°, and present temperature of 60.9° under mostly clear skies with stiff southerly winds.
10/26/2012 7:00 AM 0.50 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Half-inch of soaking rain after early high of 74.6° that fell rapidly in the early evening to this morning's 24-low of 32.5°.
10/27/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Nippy NW winds, mostly sunny and 31.4° (24-hour low) after unseasonally cold high of 46.7°. Another 0.05" rain in next five days would give us a rarity in 2012: a month with ABOVE average precipitation.
10/28/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Very overcast, slight wind from north, and 36.1° after chilly mid-autumn day of 49.1° and 31.2° extremes.
10/29/2012 7:00 AM 0.03 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 32° (24-hour low) and clearing after high of 49.1°. Freaky bit of rain at 0745 hours allowed us to top the normal monthly amount of rainfall for October, thus becoming only the third month (January and May the others) to achieve that this calendar year. We're still nearly EIGHT inches below what's a typical Chicago area ten-month total.
10/30/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Very windy from NW, battleship gray skies, and 35.6° after chilly mid-autumn extremes of 32° and 49.2°.
10/31/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Clearing but cold with NW winds and 32.1° (24-hour low) after chilly high of 46.2° yesterday. Appeard that we will conclude October with 3 1/4 inches of rain, the most normal precipitation total we've had since May.
11/1/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 28.5° for low, 48.2° for high and 29.8° as present temp under overcast skies with NW wind.
11/2/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Pleasant All Saints' Day with high of 53°, low of 29.8° and far less wind than in previous week. 30.5° this morning under clear skies. Through 10 months of 2012, rainfall total is 27.04" versus normal tally of 33.18".
11/3/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 37.2°, overcast and calm after yesterday's pleasant extremes of 53° and 29.8°.

11/6/2012 7:45 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Calm 24-hour period with 45.6° high, overnight hard freeze via 25.8° of mercury, and present reading of 29.8° with calm and partly sunny skies.
11/7/2012 7:00 AM 0.15 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Dank and chilly with narrow band of temps yesterday of 39.3°, 30°, and present reading of 38.3°.
11/8/2012 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Temperature readings varied slightly over last day with high of 46.2°, low of 38.3°, and present reading of 40.6° under overcast and calm skies. Slight late morning drizzle resulted in the 0.01" precip being reported.
11/9/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Sunny, 33°, and wind from south after pleasant day with extremes of 44.6° and 31.8°.
11/10/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Partly cloudy with SE zephyr and unseasonal reading of 49.1°. Yesterday featured a high of 58.8°, low at 0700 hours of 33° and a darned fine day to wrap up 2012 yardwork.
11/11/2012 7:00 AM 0.12 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Unseasonal extremes of 65.6° and 48.7°. Storm that lasted from 1310 hours to 1330 contributed 1/8th inch of rain and pea-sized hail along with plenty of lightning and thunder. Strong SSW winds at present and 52.8°, higher than our normal maximum for November 11.
11/12/2012 7:00 AM 0.55 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Rain began at 1611 hours and fell intermittently through bedtime at 2245. At some point after mercury fell below freezing, unidentifed form of precip formed and the white pellets are frozen to our deck. Pleasant high of 67.1° was largely negated by fierce SE/S/SW winds that reached over 40 mph at many points and made leaf collection impossible. Overnight low of 26.2° is present temp and is accompanied by stout west winds.
11/13/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Frosty overnight low of 21.7°, sunny, and calm (what, no wind?) after nippy high of but 32.5° yesterday.
11/14/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Light winds from south, partly cloudy, and 26.2° after decent and peaceful late autumn day of 36.3°/21.9° extremes. As we near the halfway point of the month, we are still woefully behind in annual and seasonal precipitation. November has registered but 0.83" rain and none is forecast through Sunday (11/18).
11/15/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Clear, calm, and 24.8° (24-hour low) after decent albeit rainless day with 43.7° high.
11/16/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Sunny, calm, and 27.1° after yesterday's carbon copy of previous four days with 46.7° high and 24.8° low.
11/17/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Xerox copy of past week's weather: sunny, calm, low of 27.1°, high of 53.2°, and present reading of 28.7°. We STILL need rain as we've fallen nearly eight inches off normal.
11/18/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Great Drought of 2012 continues with yesterdasy's warm high of 54.8°, low of 28.7° and no rain present or in forecast. Parts of our lawn NEVER came back and, if nothing else, unseasonally warm weather will allow reseeding to be done before winter. 31.6° at present with few clouds and an eastern breeze.
11/19/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Mostly cloudy, wind from SE and 36.1° after unseasonally warm day of 56.6° and 31.6° extremes. Very slight chance of rain in next 48 hours but we several WEEKS of 1" rainfalls are needed to get us to anywhere near normal.
11/20/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Another unseasonally warm and dry day with high of 57.5° and low of 31.6°. Presently 46.5° (above the normal high!) and overcast with no wind. Only 0.83" rain has fallen in first 19 days of November.
11/21/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 33.4° (24-hour low) with fog so thick that visibility is only 100 yards. Another unseasonal high of 59.5° yesterday with - what's new? - no rain.
11/22/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 41.9°, sunny, and with gentle SSW wind after yet another dry (albeit with plenty of dew-induced moisture in the tube) and unseasonally warm day that featured exteremes of 54.6° and 33.2°.
11/23/2012 7:00 AM 0.03 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Torrential downpour of 0.03" and strong northwest winds were part of system that moved through the garden spot of the southwest suburbs and plummeted unseasonal high of 60.8° down to present reading of 33.2° under steel-gray skies.
11/24/2012 7:00 AM T T T T T With high of but 33.2°, trace of snow (1100 hours), high velocity winds from west-northwest, and overnight low of 24./9°, 23 November was type of day not endured by us in nearly nine months. Today is forecast to be less cold and windy but will be a reminder that December is but a week away.
11/25/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Sunny, calm, and clear after blustery day that featured temperatures that at no time rose above freezing. 31.6° was the high and present reading of 23.9° is the low. In November this station has logged but 0.86" rain, putting New Lenox nearly NINE inches below normal for 329 days of the calendar year.
11/27/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 14.7° reading is lowest in nearly 10 months in this hot, dry year. High of 42.9° yesterday with some wind and gray clouds but, alas and alack, no rain.
11/28/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 High of 32.5°, low of 14.9° (0715 hours yesterday), and present reading of 22.8° under clear and calm skies. As usual, no rain in today's forecast. Doing a little research of this year's rainy days, I found that we've had rain on exactly 1/3 of all days (111 of 333) but only FIVE of those days had "gully-washer" totals of 1" or more. Worse yet, we've had few strings of rainy periods in which the gauge was busy for three+ days. Our backyard still looks awful despite much late-year work by me and has never looked so bad for so long and so late in the year over the 26 years we've been here.
11/29/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Mostly sunny, 28.4°, and breezy from south after high of 42.8° and low of 22.8°. 333 days have passed in 2012. On only 14 of those days has this weather station had at least 1/2" rain. Worse yet, on only eight occasions has at least .8" rain fallen. The ground is incredibly dry, powdery and friable. Barring a water-logged December (the odds are greatly against it), this is going to play tremendous havoc with next year's agricultural cycle.
11/30/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Partly cloudy, wind from SE, and 34.3° after another dry day with extremes of 50.5° and 28.5°. This is the final day of November and we have had but four days when it rained, a total of .89", and none forecast today.
12/1/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 The rain measurements for November, meteorological autumn, and the first 11 months are in and they border on disastrous. If the span from January to October was Saharan with its below average totals in eight of those months and an eight INCH deficit, November was the Gobi Desert. .87" rain and 24 of the 30 days having no precip helped the month to cap off a season of 5.92" rain as compared to nearly 11 in a normal year. Yesterday's high was 55.4°, the low 33.2°, and presently 35° as we enter winter, 90 days that usually bring us a mere 5 3/4" of rain. Nicht gut!
12/2/2012 7:00 AM 0.09 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 This report being sent from a FEMA row boat after catastrophic overnight rains - the first since the Veterans' Day inundation - left 0.09" in the gauge. High of 56.8°, low at 0700 yesterday of 35° and present reading under overcast skies is a balmy 52.8°. Grab an oar!
12/3/2012 7:00 AM 0.02 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Drippy skies, 57°, and fog that limits visibility to 200 yards after balmy day with extremes of 62° and 46.2°.
12/4/2012 7:00 AM 0.07 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 With 0.07" rain, December Deluge II nailed the area overnight. The devastating downpour followed a day featuring a remarkable high of 67.8° and preceding this morning's cloudy low of 45.6°.
12/5/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Dry day with above average high of 53.4° and overnight low of 27.1° accompanied by NNW winds. Looks as if our three day siege of rain is over. The 0.18" precip we received in 72 hours has made an astonishing difference in the lawn: NOT!
12/6/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Pleasant early winter day with high of 43 degrees and present low of 31 but, like nearly always, no rain. I do see, however, that the folks at the late Bob Collins' Your-Guess-Is-As-Good-As-Mine College of weather prognostication have issued solid chances of the wet stuff in the next 48 hours.
12/7/2012 7:00 AM 0.05 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Temperatures nearly steady over last 24 hours with high of 44 degrees, low of 29 early yesterday, and steady drizzle that resulted in 0.05" rain. Amount did not make even a baby-sized dent in rain deficit for the week/month. For 2012, this reporting station's precip total is TEN inches below normal.
12/8/2012 7:00 AM 0.13 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 High of 45.5°, low of 35.6° (at 0700 hours) and stiff breeze from northwest following another day with rain. Alas, too little, too late.
12/9/2012 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 A spit of rain late yesterday afternoon (1530 hours)accompanied a high of 42.6°, low of 33.6°, and present reading of 34.8° in strong east winds.
12/10/2012 7:00 AM 0.08 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Overcast, stout west winds, and 27.8° (24-hour low) after day of intermittent rain and 41.5° high. Quite a string of days with rain: seven in last nine.
12/11/2012 7:00 AM 0.01 T T T T Overnight low of 19.9° (after 31.4° high), clear, and SW winds winds after several short periods (1-3 minutes) of rain resulted in 0.01" in the gauge. As well, slight dusting of snow is on the white board.
12/12/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Mostly clear, wind from south, and 21.5° after 19.9° low and 32.7° high. We're one-third of the way through the month and have had numerous rainy days but only a scant total 0.46". Seems as if we're well on our way to having eight below average precip months of the twelve.
12/13/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Fair skies, southerly wind, and 28° after extremes of 43.5° and 21.2° (0700 hours yesterday). Appears that our wet monsoon season is over until Saturday.
12/14/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Sunny, slight wind from SE, and 24-hour low of 25.3° after high of 45.6° and - no surprise - no rain.
12/15/2012 7:00 AM 0.01 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Lightly raining, strong SE winds, and 40.6° after extremes of 47.8° of 25.3° (0700 hours) yesterday. Where is all the rain that the boys with the weather ouija boards predicted just 48 hours ago?
12/16/2012 7:00 AM 0.21 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Sorry that report is late. Wife and I have both been ill and slept in today. Yesterday's stats: 47.8° high, 39.7° low, 0.21" rain (whoo-whoo!) and plenty of SSE wind. This morning reading is 43.7° under overcast skies with stiff west wind.
12/17/2012 7:00 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Overcast, slight breeze from north, and 35° after yesterday's early high of 43.7° and low of 34.8° with spray of rain at 0920 hours.
12/18/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Overcast, still and 29.8° (24-hour low) after seasonal high of 40.6°. The precipitation prognosticators have put together a 72-hour forecast with all sorts of typical December weather: cold rain, snow, high winds, and icy conditions.
12/19/2012 7:00 AM T T T T T Several flurries and also a trace of rain in a dreary early winter day with high of 39.7° and low of 29.8°. Present reading is 31.8° under gray skies and with slight NW wind.
12/20/2012 7:00 AM 0.73 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Hard rains during the night resulted in 3/4" in the gauge, the 9th rainiest day of 355 calendar days thus far in 2012. With strong ESE winds, present temp of 43.7 is 24-hour high while low of 31.8° was at 0700 hours yesterday.
12/21/2012 7:00 AM 0.26 0.5 0.06 0.5 0.06 High of 48.3° at 1230 hours then slow descent until mercury hit 24.6° at reporting time. 0.17" rain fell through 1630 before wintry mix began which eventually turned to snow mid-evening. Approximate measurement of 0.5" snow with strong NW winds and battleship gray sky this morning.
12/22/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.3 0.03 Clear, calm, and 12.3° (24-hour low) after very windy day with high of but 25.5°. We drove to Champaign and back yesterday. Due to the fierce winds, our MPG varied by seven traveling south compared to the return trip north.
12/23/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.3 0.03 Slight north wind and clear skies after 30.5° high and 12.2 low (0700 hours yesterday). Our little snow pack did not lose any moisture content or height in last 24 hours.
12/24/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Snow has melted and we are left with a dreary Christmas Eve landscape under overcast skies and slight NE breeze. High yesterday was 34.5°, low 14.9° (at 0700 hours) and present reading of 26.9°.
12/25/2012 7:00 AM T T T T T 26.7°, overcast, and slight wind from NE after overnight low of 26.6° and high of but 32.7° with traces of both snow and rain. An unapologetic wish from me to you for a blessed observance of the birth of our Lord!
12/26/2012 7:00 AM T T T T T The textbook meteorological definition of blustery is outside today: very windy from NE, threatening gray skies, and 30.2°. Christmas brought a high of but 32.5°, low of 26.6°, and several sprays of flurries or cold rain.
12/27/2012 7:00 AM T T T T T Several brief and unsatisfying episodes of flurries during another gray late December day that had narrow extremes of 31.6°/26.6°. Another dreary day is upon us with overcast skies, slight NW wind, and 27.5°.
12/28/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Looks as if it could snow any time now with breeze from south, solid gray skies, and 29.4° after yesterday's hi/lo of 32° and 27.5°.
12/29/2012 7:00 AM 0.04 0.4 0.03 0.5 0.04 Flurries, NW wind, and 27.1° (24-hour low) after high of 30.9°.
12/30/2012 7:00 AM T T T 0.1 T Chilly 24 hour span with high of 27.1°, low of 11.1°, and present reading of 15.8° under clear, calm skies. Several brief episodes of flurries yesterday amounted to only a trace of precipitation.
12/31/2012 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 31.6°, wind from SW, and overcast after yesterday's high and 0700 low of 15.8° (12/30). Extremely likely 2012 will end with 9" rain deficit (29.67" versus normal 38.55"). In addition, only 0.9" of snow has fallen. Some year: good riddance!
1/1/2013 7:00 AM T T T T T Fair skies, north wind, and 13.2° after extremes of 34.7° (early in the day) and 12.2° and a a few flurries at 1400 hours on New Year's Eve. Books are now closed on the past 12 months of weather. Warmth was one matter but the dearth of precipitation totally another as this station had but 29.67" compared to normal 38.55". Eight months had below average rainfall and of the four that didn't, two were very narrowly in the 'plus' column. April and November were particularly brutal with but 0.88" and 0.87" respectively. On only five days did rainfall exceed 1" and on only 14 days was the total over 1/2". Total snow for 2012 was but 20.9" and after 4 March nothing measurable fell until 21 December.
1/2/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 In several ways, 2013 began as 2012 was in its entirety: no precip, clear skies and a slight southerly breeze. The temperatures of the last 30 hours, however, are something different with a high of 26.6° and overnight low of just 6°. Presently 7.5° in the garden spot of the southwest suburbs.
1/3/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Overcast, slight wind from west and 27.1° after yesterday's uneventful day with 28.5°/7.1° extremes and, of course, no precipitation.
1/4/2013 7:00 AM T T T T T Chilly SW wind, clear, and 11.1° (24-hour low) after high of 31.6° with a few (and I do mean but a few!) flurries at 1415 hours.
1/5/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Exactly five weeks into meteorological winter and there've been no sub-zero temperatures and not even one inch of snow. Yesterday's hum-drum readings were 34.3° and 11.3° (0715 hours) while this morning it's 18.1°, windy again from south, and with fair skies.
1/6/2013 7:00 AM 0.03 0.3 0.03 0.3 0.03 Two episodes (1330-1500 hours and 1715-1815) left us with 0.25" of snow that had dense snow/water ratio of 8:1. High of 35.4°, low of 17.7°, and present mercury measure of 23.9° under gray skies and sharp west wind. Was rididng my bike in the first snowfall yesterday and had this odd feeling of, "Hey, I remember back when it used to do this". THAT'S how rare a daytime snowfall has been since last February.
1/7/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Even though high temperature was below freezing at 30.9°, Old Sol did the job and eliminated what was left of Saturday's dinky snow. Overnight low of 12.9° and present reading of 14.9° with clear skies and southerly winds begins the work week.
1/8/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Misty cover to the sky, slight wind from south, and 23.9° after extremes of 35.7° of 14.9° (0715 hours yesterday). Have ridden my bike outside all seven days of the new year. Aside from occasional stiff winds and a few snowy patches, I've done 55 pleasant miles. All these days and all these miles in January for me: unprecedented.
1/9/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Unseasonal high of 41.5°, low of 23.9° (0715 yesterday) and present mercury marker of 32° with stiff little west wind. 40 days into meteorological winter and barely one inch of snow and nothing close to a below-zero morning.
1/10/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Overcast, slight SE wind, and 25.7° after super unseasonal high of 47.6° and low of 21.3°. Six weeks into meteorological winter and no sign of moderate snowfall or 0° temperatures. Conversely, I've ridden my old bike every day of 2013 and racked up 78 miles: no ice, no snowy spots, no brtual temps but, of course, enough uncaring drivers to keep me on my toes.
1/11/2013 7:00 AM 0.55 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 How's this for screwy? We had but 14 days in 2012 with over 1/2" rain and now on January 11 we've just racked up .55". As well, 55.4° at 0700 is the present AND 24-hour high temperature. Persistent winds all yesterday and today have switched from east and southeast to southwest under misting skies. Low mercury measure of 25.7 degrees was 24 hours ago.
1/12/2013 7:00 AM 0.02 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Some oddball temperatures for the first third of January: high of 51.2°, low of but 46.7°, and present reading of 47.1° with warm SW winds. As we near the midpoint of meteorological winter, it's evident that in fact, it hasn't even arrived.
1/13/2013 7:00 AM 0.23 0.0 0.00 0.2 0.23 Ice everywhere with NW winds under overcast skies. High of 50.1° at 0845 yesterday, low of 26.6° and present reading of 28°. As the old sarge used to say on "Hill Street Blues": "Hey, hey, hey, let's be careful out there."
1/14/2013 7:00 AM T T T T T Clear, NW wind, and 8.7° (24-hour low) after high of 28° at exactly this time yesterday. Two separate and very brief instances of rain and then snow occurred between 1100 and 1300 hours on 13 January.
1/15/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Calm, clear, and 8.6° (24-hour low) after brisk afternoon high of 23.7°. With no snow on the ground and only a few ice patches, it was a decent day to bike 11 miles. I don't suspect this has been the case in the great majority of mid-January days in the Chicago area.
1/16/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Clear, 13.1°, and nasty little wind from west after unremarkable day with extremes of 30.7° and 8.7°. No snow, no snow, and yes: no snow. We've passed the mid-point of January AND the mid-point of winter and this station has reported a paltry snow total of but 1.2".
1/17/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Clear, calm, and 24° with the 24-hour low of 8.7° having come just after reporting time yesterday. 16 January high was 32.9° but with the stiff winds my bike ride was not pleasant.
1/18/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Partly cloudy, slight wind from south, and 17.9° after chilly day with 28.7°/12.3° extremes and, of course, no precipitation.
1/19/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 High of 39.2°, low of 17.7° (0715 hours yesterday) and present reading of 37.4° which is above the normal high for the day. 50 days of meteorological winter and have had but 1.2" snow and just over 2.56" rain.
1/20/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 11.6° (24-hour low), windy from NW, and sunny after 48° high. Winds last evening and throughout the night were often over 40 MPH and made falling asleep difficult with the noise against the house. Reminded me of the scenes in the cemetery and house at the beginning of "Dr. Zhivago".
1/21/2013 7:00 AM 0.02 0.5 0.02 0.5 0.02 Well, well, on January 21 winter has begun! High of 20.3° made matters decent for an 8-mile bike ride yesterday but the 0.5" of snow and 20-30 MPH northwest winds will prohibit it today. Temperature (24-hour lows have dropped steadily since I arose and did my snow measuring) is now at 8.2°.
1/22/2013 7:00 AM T T T 0.2 0.10 Only 21 days until the Milwaukee Brewers' pitchers and catchers report to Maryvale, Arizona and we've finally had our first sub-zero night and 24-hour period in which measurable snow remained on the ground. Overnight and present low is -4° under clear skies with light NW wind after flurries and a 'high' of 8.4° yesterday.
1/23/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 T T Wind from west, cloudy, and 11.1° (highest temperature since midnight on Monday) after 24-hour low of -4° at 0700 hours yesterday. Turned out to be a decent day for a little bike ride albeit mucho caution used when approaching icy/snowy patches. Have ridden 312.8 miles since this excuse for meteorological winter began almost eight weeks ago.
1/24/2013 7:00 AM T T T T T Chilly and typical late January day with on-and-off flurries, gray skies, and high of 22.4°. 5.5° at present after overnight low of 5.3°. *** Some help for new folks: one can make the symbol for degrees by holding down the "ALT" key and using the side number pad to type in a 0, then 1, then 7, and finally 6. It beats typing out the word each time. There - ° - I just did it!
1/25/2013 7:00 AM 0.04 0.5 0.04 0.5 0.04 Flurries from south, 17° (following hi/lo of 27.6° and 5.5°), and a battleship gray sky after overnight event that left 0.5" on the ground. The anniversary of the 1967 snowstorm is approaching and last night's snow would have to have been increased by 46 TIMES to equal it.
1/26/2013 7:00 AM T T T 0.5 0.03 9.9° (24-hour low), NW breeze, and sunny skies after flurries yesterday and high of 27.6°. If you're at least 52 years old, what were you doing in the Chicago area 46 years ago today? You can remember (1 your auto being stuck in snow, 2) joyously throwing snowballs, or 3) sitting inside wondering when the blizzard would end so you could go out and start removing the 20+ inches of "heart attack snow" that fell.
1/27/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.3 0.02 Overcast, moderate wind from south, and 23.5° after decent Saturday that featured high of 27.6° and low of 9.9°. From reading the latest weather forecast, I infer that bicycling will cease for several days. Conversely, the soil needs precipitation as badly as my legs (and rear end) need a rest. *****Again for you rookies, to obtain the degree symbol of °, depress the key "Alt" and hold it down while typing in 1, then 7, and then 6 from the number pad on the right. As well, check to see that the "Num Lock" key has been in the on position. A little green light up and to the left of it will indicate you've locked it.
1/28/2013 7:00 AM 0.13 T T T T Light rain, SW wind, and 46.4° (24-hour high) follow a circus day of weather. Along with a low of 23.5° (0715 hours), Mother Nature gave us light snow (1400 hours), on-and-off rain, drizzle, and freezing drizzle. Tomorrow we'll bask in warmth and by Thursday go back into the deep-freeze.

2/1/2013 7:00 AM T T T 0.5 0.06 Periodic flurries, high of 15.8° (0700 hours) and strong NW and west winds were the norm yesterday. 3/15/2013 7:00 AM 0.02 T T 0.0 0.00 Hazy, slight southerly breeze, and 29.1° after extremes of but 35° and 20.6° (0715 yesterday). Combination of snow flurries and drizzle left 0.02" in gauge.
3/16/2013 7:00 AM 0.02 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Misty and slight NE wind with seasonal temps across the board: high of 45.6°, low of 28.9° (0715 hours yesterday), and present mercury measure of 32.5°. Light raions yesterday gave us 0.02" in the gauge.
3/17/2013 7:00 AM T 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Mostly cloudy, NE wind, and 27.6° (24-hour low) after unseasonal high of but 37.9°. What a far cry from the oddball temperatures of a year ago which were nearly 50° higher.
3/18/2013 7:00 AM 0.03 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Freezing rain and 29.8° after seasonal high of 46.4° which wasn't all that pleasant due to raw SE winds. Low of 27.5° was at 0715 hours yesterday yet the day was a passable one for eight miles of riding the bike through the garden spot of the SW suburbs. Hey, hey, hey: let's be careful out there!
3/19/2013 7:00 AM 0.03 T T T T Beautiful January morning with stiff west winds, 16.3° temperature (24-hour low), after flurries, high of 33.8°, and light rain yesterday. WHOOPS, it's late March!
3/20/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Another windy (from NW) and sunny January morning after yesterday's frigid high of 34° and present/overnight low of 12.3°. Yep, colder than a mother-in-law's kiss out there.
3/21/2013 7:00 AM T T T T T Another spiffy January day with a trace of snow, high of 29.4° and overnight low of but 10.9°. One just KNEW that when we were having that sissy December and January that we'd pay for them in late March. Winter in the garden spot of the SW suburbs will always happen; it's just a matter of when.
3/22/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Some groovy vernal equinox weather: low of 10.9°, high of but 35.7°, and present reading of 14.3° under clear skies with slight west wind.
3/23/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Sunny, slight northerly wind, and 26.4° after extremes of 14.3° and 44.9°. Mid-afternoon made for tolerable biking weather although the NW wind bit at my ravaged features most of the eight miles.
3/24/2013 7:00 AM 0.01 0.1 0.01 0.1 0.01 Light snow from east and 30°. Extremes of 43° and 26.4° yesterday but little wind. A bit of a stretch on my part to say there's 0.1" snow out there but it is lightly covering the yard and melted down to 0.01" in the tube.
3/25/2013 7:00 AM 0.15 1.8 0.16 1.8 0.16 Pretty snowfall with present temp of 30.7° that followed a high of but 38.8° and low of 29.6°. Opening Day is but a week away but then, ahem, we Brewer fans have a retractable roof on our modern ballpark.
3/26/2013 7:00 AM T T T 0.9 0.08 30.5°, overcast, and slight noerth wind after narrow extremes of 35.4° and 28° yesterday amidst a few falls of flakes of flurries.
3/27/2013 7:00 AM T T T 0.0 0.00 Several flurries accompanied a high of 40.6° and low of 28.5°. Present temp is 30.5° unvder cloudy skies with light west winds.
3/28/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Gee, with a sunny, calm reading of 26°, a rare and decent start to a vernal day. 22.4° low, 43.5° high, and no precipitation yesterday.
3/29/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 As pleasant and bearable as yesterday seemed, the temps were low-normal with a 53.6° high and 24.2° low. Present reading of 27.6° is accompanied by calm and sunny skies.
3/30/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Perhaps the best day we've had in 2013 with balmy 61.1° high, 27.6°, and present mercury-masher of 30° under sunny and peaceful skies. Conditions were so pleasant that I worked at cutting out roots to ash we had removed. Have NOT been looking forward to that task but did it wearing light pants and just a work shirt.
3/31/2013 7:00 AM 0.04 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 He is risen! He is risen indeed! Fine Easter Saturday to work outdoors with 61.7° high, 30° low and moderate winds. At present, 42.4° under cloudy skies and with medium NW wind after 0.04" rain fell.
4/1/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Was a wonderful Easter with a high of 61.7°, low of 27.6°, and just a bit much wind from W/NW. Hope you good folks celebrated the Rising of the Lord with loved ones.
4/2/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Back to winter in the SW suburbs' garden spot with a high of but 44.6°, low of 22.2°, and present reading of 24.2°. Warmest reading I could find in the Midwest yesterday was in Milwaukee where Brewer fans enjoyed a sunny, windless, 70° environment and the Crew won their season opener in gorgeous Miller Park.
4/3/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 More below average readings with 49.8° high, 21.2° low, and present 25.3° under sunny but windy (from NW) skies. Last year we had the summer that started way early and aridly lasted forever and now we're in the throes of a winter that shows no consistent sign of running away and hiding.
4/4/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Temperatures yesterday and now are nearly 10 degrees below normal: 46° high, 24.5° low, and present reading of 28.9° under clear and calm skies. Been in this house for 27 years and do not recall a longer period when the lawn was not pool table green. Matters went south in mid-May, then the drought extended into summer, autumn, and winter and now - 95 days into this calendar year - the grass shows no sign of "greening up". Dreary and depressing to one who prides himself in the health and appearance of his lawn.
4/5/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Sunny but nippy NE wind and 35.4° after pleasant day with 64.2° high and 28.5° low. This has been such a crappy non-spring that yesterday felt balmy when in reality it was average for this time of year.
4/6/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 Stiff SE winds of 20 MPH and 41.7° after high of 55.9° and low of 33.2° (0200 hours). Spot of backyard where massive ash tree was removed has now been filled in, graded, seeded, and then covered by light coat of fertilizer soil: c'mon, Mother Nature, rain!
4/7/2013 7:00 AM 0.04 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 69.4° high (along with low of 41.7° low and present cloudy reading of 43.7°) but disappointing total of only 0.04" rain. Between here and Milwaukee late at night it poured along the Tri-State Tollway with such intensity that roadway was difficult to traverse. I'm certain totals in DuPage and Lake counties must be far higher than that of New Lenox.
4/8/2013 7:00 AM 0.37 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 53.9°, cloudy, and windy from south after 0400-0700 hours rains nourished the newly seeded plot where our ash tree stood for 35 years. 24-high was 69.6° and low 40.1°.
4/9/2013 7:00 AM 0.05 0.0 0.00 0.0 0.00 High 71.4°, Low 42.9°
4/10/2013 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Nasty morning with 39.7° temperature, 20 MPH winds from east, steel-gray skies, and a cold rain just having passed here. High of 75.5° yesterday seems long gone.
4/11/2013 7:00 AM 1.15 M M M M Light rain from east and 43.1° (also the 24-hour high) after low of 38.3° during a soggy, raw Wednesday. The garden spot of the southwest suburbs has now had at least 2" of precipitation in each of the four months of this calendar year.
4/12/2013 7:00 AM 0.06 M M M M SW winds at 10+ MPH, overcast, and 36.3° after hi/lo of 52.5° and 35°.
4/13/2013 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Raw, 33.8° (overnight low), cloudy and with icy wind from east. High yesterday was only 44.4° and intermittent little sprays of rain made the day even more dreary.
4/14/2013 7:00 AM T T T M M Bizarre period between 0800 hours and 0930 with a combination of rain, snow, and some other unidentifiable frozen matter. At present 40.2° with stiff winds from east and sunny skies. Hi/lo yesterday of 47.1° and 33.8° (0700 hours).
4/15/2013 7:00 AM T 0.0 M M M Stiff southerly winds, overcast, and 53.9° after extremes of 72.5° and 40.2° (0700 hours yesterday). Grass which was planted nearly two weeks ago has not yet sprouted from spot that ash tree formerly occupied.
4/16/2013 7:00 AM 0.50 M M M M Slight NW winds, overcast skies, and 41.5° after hi/lo of 65.3° and 41.1°. Despite 2.2" of rain this month, not a single sprout of new grass has arisen. Need more sun and some 70° temps.
4/17/2013 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Moderate east winds with overcast skies and 44° after decent day that featured high of 59.5° and low of 41.5°. With weather forecast being what it is, I'll be with Bill Cosby tonight building a large biblical boat.
4/18/2013 7:00 AM 3.04 M M M M Wow, where's Noah? 3.04" of overnight rain takes us to over 5" for just the first 18 days of April. Still pouring with readings of 54.5° (now), 59.7° (4/17 high), and 43.1° (low at 0700 hours yesterday).
4/19/2013 7:00 AM 0.74 M M M M Winds 20-30 MPH from west and raw after yesterday's relative warmth of 60.2° and 0.74" rain. Overnight low of 35° is just beneath present reading of 35.6°. Grass has finally sprouted where our beloved ash was but it'll get little help from Father Nature (I'm a chauvinist) the next few days.
4/20/2013 7:00 AM 0.01 T T M M 29.1° , clear, and slight NW wind after high of but 37.2°. For us Swedes and others, a smorgasbord of precipitation yesterday with light rain, sleet, snow, and frozen snow. Somehow, we garnered 0.01" in the gauge.
4/21/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Look ma, no rain! Extreme temps of 47.3° and 27.8° in last 24 hours as well as present reading of 32°. Sharp little SE wind under mostly sunny skies but again, no rain!
4/22/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear, slight wind from south, and 39°. Decent Sunday with 58.8°, low of 32° and Brewers swept Cubs.
4/23/2013 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M Overcast, slight SE wind, and 50° after hi/lo of 72.6° and 39°. The lawn is finally beginning to look the hue it was before the drought began last May.
4/24/2013 7:00 AM 0.80 M M M M Light NNE wind, light rain, and chilly 34.5°. Decent but unseasonal cool peak temp of 59° yesterday with today's low of 34.3° just before daybreak. 6.84" of rain for month which still has seven days to go.
4/25/2013 7:00 AM T M M M M Another disappointing so-called 'spring' day with a high of only 50.3°, low of 34.5° and a trickle of rain at reporting time (4/24). Present reading of 41.7° with stinging west wind and partly cloudy skies.
4/26/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, wind from south, and 39.2° after hi/lo of 53° and 34.8°. In this non-vernal post-winter season it's almost painful to watch our new grass struggling to grow in the spot where our beloved ash tree once stood.
4/27/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, slight zephyr from SE and 44.6° after pleasant day with 68° high, 39.2° low and - for once - plenty of sunshine.
4/28/2013 7:00 AM 0.06 M M M M Overcast, calm, and 53° after balmy high of 74.8° (warmest day since mid-autumn of 2012) and low of 39.2°. Cut grass for the first time this year and didn't even have to do the entire yard with all the patches that still need work after last year's turf disaster.
4/29/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Now THIS is how a spring morning is supposed to be: sunny, slight SW breeze, and 50°. Overcast high of 69.4° yesterday and a pre-dawn low of 48.2° this fine day.
4/30/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M South winds and fair with reading of 57.2° after pleasant 73.4° and low of 49.6°. This is more like it!
5/1/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Good old northeastern Illinois: from late winter to early summer in about 72 hours. High yesterday of 84.2°, overnight low of 57.2° (which we'd have taken for most of the last two months), and sunny present reading of 62.9°.
5/2/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Chilly NE wind with clear skies and 48.2°. High of 84° and low of 47.4° in last 24 hours. Have done extensive yard work the last few days and during our truncated spring but am still appalled at the damage done by last year's drought.
5/3/2013 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Light rain, wind from NE and 42.2° after hi/lo of 62.4° and 42°. Another Pleasant Valley Friday.
5/4/2013 7:00 AM 0.09 M M M M Light rain yesterday morning but nothing like the Sultans at the Service had predicted. All we received in the garden spot of the southwest suburbs was a raw high of 53°,easterly winds, and clouds. Present reading is 51.9° and 24-hour low of 42.2° was at 0700 hours on 5/3.
5/5/2013 7:00 AM T M M M M Several miniscule sprays of rain amidst high of 71.9° and low of 48.2°. Present reading is 50° under mostly cloudy skies.
5/6/2013 7:00 AM T M M M M Unremarkable day with 71.9° high, 50° low, and present cloudy reading of 53.4°. Barely perceptible trace of rain near supper time last night.
5/7/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Pleasant day with sunny high of 75°, low of 45.8°, and present calm reading of 54°. Had wacko dream last night that I heard raindrops pelting the bedroom window so I had to check the backyard gauge before making out this report. Jeesh!
5/8/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, calm, and 51.4° after yardwork-friendly extremes of 79.7° and 50.1°. The last of numerous patches of dead lawn I repaired after last year's devastation have not come up but perhaps today will be the day.
5/9/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Slight SE winds, stark gray clouds to the west, and 58.8° after gorgeous day with hi/lo of 82.5°/51.2°. Now if the rain will just hold off until I can get back from Joliet after errands and can cut the back grass....
5/10/2013 7:00 AM 0.38 M M M M Gloomy with moderate north wind and 48° (24-hour low) after high of 72.4° with a steady rain late in the day.
5/11/2013 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Temperatures for the 24 last hours have varied less then five degrees with high of 49.4°, low of 44.6° and present cloudy reading of 47.8°. Brief spit of rain around 9 a.m. but more's needed than that to keep the garden spot of the southwest suburbs verdant.
5/12/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny but stiff NW wind and just 39.2° after overnight low of 36.1°. Yesterday's far below normal high of 61.1° never even felt that warm due to the constant icy winds. Getting new grass to sprout and grow continues to be a challenge in this poor excuse for a vernal season.
5/13/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny and calm but downright frigid for mid-May with overnight low of 32.7° and present reading of 37°. Yesterday's 'high' of 57.2° was 15° below what's considered typical for the garden spot of the southwest suburbs. By the way, rainfall for this nearly half a month of May is but 0.50" at this station.
5/14/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, strong winds from SW, and already 57.2°. 24-hour low of 37° was at 0700 yesterday and high was a yard work-friendly 66.9°.
5/15/2013 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Light rain at 0530 hours as I was exiting the shower. High yesterday of 91.7°, low of 57.2° (0700 hours 5/14), and present reading of 71.9°.
5/16/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Weather of an idyllic nature with sunny, calm, and present reading of 57° after hi/lo of 87.6° and 53.4°.
5/17/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Mostly cloudy, calm, and 62.9° after high of 82.4° and low of 57°. With only 0.53" of precip in the first 16 days of May, we're fast getting to the point where we need rain. All the work many of us have done to rehabilitate our yards after last year's drought may go for naught if we don't get some healthy thunderstorms in the next few days.
5/18/2013 7:00 AM 0.20 M M M M High of 80.7°, low of 58.6°, and present mercury marker of 62° under calm and clear skies. Had 0.20" rain yesterday between 1530 and 1615 but on a farm we visited just five miles south 1.25" fell. It poured!
5/19/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Calm, clearing, and 65.4° following pleasant hi/lo of 81.6° and 62°. Although the lawn has come on strongly of late, we still need a few soaking rains to give strength to the newest sprigs of grass.
5/20/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M After a toasty (86.3°) Sunday, the weather train barrels down the tracks to the last 1/3 of the May with only 0.73" rain. On its website the NWS has precipitation chances as being good the next three days but.... Present temp under clear and calm skies is 71.9° after 65.4° low.
5/21/2013 7:00 AM 1.25 M M M M Clearing, moderate wind from SW, and 64.9° after sultry 87.9° high and 61.7° low. In six hours, our May rainfall total was nearly tripled. The weary garden hose can finally rest.
5/22/2013 7:00 AM 0.28 M M M M Light rain and 63.5° (also the 24-hour low) after pleasant day of SW winds and 79.3° high. Rain total for May is now 2.26" but significantly below what is typical for the fifth month of the year.
5/23/2013 7:00 AM 0.51 M M M M Light rain from north and mercury rests at 24-hour low of 50.1° after yesterday's high of 67.8°. The 2.04" rain we've had in the last three days is the second highest back-to-back-to-back total we've experienced going back 22 months.
5/24/2013 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Nippy NE wind and sunny with chilly 41.1° temperature after unseasonally cold high of but 56.6° and a 36.5° low. 0.03" rain was from storm that was ending as collection was made at 0700 yesterday.
5/25/2013 7:00 AM T M M M M A drop or two of rain just past 0630 hours but otherwise drab with high of but 62°, low of 41.5°, and present reading of 47.1°.
5/26/2013 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M 46.5°, calm, and slightly overcast after abysmal high of 57.5° and low of 44.7°. Many of us in this area are suffering from two straight nearly sleepless nights from this asinine noise fest being held in Joliet. 2 a.m. and this thump-thump-thump is still going on? Insane.
5/27/2013 7:00 AM 0.36 M M M M Light rain from southeast and 56.6° after hi/lo of 64.7° and 46.5°. Have had 2.68" rain since mid-month; this time last year the drought had already begun. Regardless of what your plans are today, please recall and honor who and what this holiday is about.
5/28/2013 7:00 AM 0.53 M M M M Late-night thunder, lightning, and showers gave us the majority of our .5+" precipitation after threats of it all day amounted to little. Another decent little storm in the next three days will put us over the 4" plateau for May. High of 64.9° yesterday, low of 56.6°, and present reading of 64.2°.
5/29/2013 7:00 AM 0.89 M M M M Torrential downpours last evening ended a day with a humid high of 75° and low of 61.7°. Currently mercury is at 62° with far less mugginess, partly cloudy skies, and gentle SW wind. With May precip at 4.40", meteorological Spring rests at a lofty total of 13.41" which is a vast improvement on a year ago.
5/30/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A rare day with no rain (streak of nine straight rainy days was broken) but atmosphere was saturated with moisture and mugginess abounded along with the high of 82° and low of only 62°. Sunny, very windy from south, and 70.7° at 0700 hours. How 'bout them Black Hawks?
5/31/2013 7:00 AM 0.38 M M M M Yet another day of high humidity, blast-furnace winds and measurable rainfall. High temperature was 83.8° but seemed higher due to aforementioned conditions while overnight low of 62.9° and present reading of 64.9° with sunny skies and less southerly winds are more pleasant. .02" rain today will take us over the 5" plateau for May. One year ago it had stopped raining and would stay that way for most of the rest of the calendar year.
6/1/2013 7:00 AM 0.05 M M M M After yesterday's pittance of moisture, a very soggy meteorological spring has ended with a whopping 14.03" rain. 6.89" came in April and then 5.05" in the just-concluded May. High of 75.9° was far below what the Your-Guess-Is-As-Good-As-Mine weather gurus predicted while the low of 62.9° was accurate. At present it's overcast, 65.8° and with that omnipresent SW wind that stifles us bike riders.
6/2/2013 7:00 AM 0.29 M M M M Northwest winds, no significant chances of rain in the forecast, and 61.3° reading all present a noticeable change in our weather. High of 72.5°, low of 59°, and frog-strangling rain at 1845 hours were highlights of yesterday.
6/3/2013 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Steady but irritating drizzle finally abated near noon but temps fell from 6/2 0700 reading of 61.3° to 41.1° early this morning. At present 45.6° under sunny and - holy moly - calm skies.
6/4/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Gee no rain yesterday (cowabunga!) and, like the gent from Capron, I got plenty of yard work accomplished. High of 73.9°, low of 45.6°, and present reading of 51.8° under sunny skies with light SE wind.
6/5/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny and SE wind with 24-hour readings of 59.3° (present), 51.8° (low), and 74.8° (high). Sheesh, two days in a row without rain after a skein of 13 of 14 with it: here comes the drought!
6/6/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Lots of clouds and dire forecasts yesterday but no rain. High of 77.7°, low of 58.6° with east winds, overcast dome, and 60.6° at present. For Mr. Ottawa 1.3 NW, the Germans would long mutter their language's version of that Radio London message - " Verwundet mein Herz mit einturniges matischkeit" - after weatherman Stagg's correct forecast allowed the five beaches to be stormed and taken.
6/7/2013 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M Pleasant day for yard work once the irritating little showers abated before midday. High of 71.9°, low 51.2°, and present sunny near-calm temperature is 53°.
6/8/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Pleasant 24 hours with 74.8° high, overnight low of 47.1°, and present 53.4° with calm, blue skies.
6/9/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Pleasant day that preceded dramatic Hawk victory with 75.9° high, 53.4° low, and present reading of 65.8° under partly cloudy skies with slight SE wind.
6/10/2013 7:00 AM 0.06 M M M M Misty and still with temperature of 64.9° after hi/lo of 80.6° and 63.5°. Dire and extreme rain forecasts of the NWS never materialized. Judging from the CoCoRaHS map, we here in the garden spot of the southwest suburbs missed significant rainfall by one or two miles.
6/11/2013 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Sunny, calm, pleasant, and 63.5° after extremes of 79.5° and 61.1°. Bit of rain came late after a day of ominous skies had portended more.
6/12/2013 7:00 AM T M M M M Calm and threatening with muggy temperature of 71.9° after 83.9° high and 63.5° low.
6/13/2013 7:00 AM 1.64 M M M M High of 88.8°, low of 59° and present reading of 59.9° follows three storms last night that dumped .67" rain at 1800 hours, 0.68" at 2000 hours, and another of 0.29" near midnight as the Hawks were finishing their 3 OT victory.
6/14/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Crisp and clear with east wind and 57.5° after hi/lo of 74.8° and 52.8°.
6/15/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Calm with threatening skies and 65.3° after high of 77° and low of 57.5°.
6/16/2013 7:00 AM 0.20 M M M M 65.8°, clearing, and wind from west after pleasant high of 78.6° and low of 57.5°.
6/17/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Very pleasant Sunday with 82.2° high, 63.3° low, and no precipitation. Present mercury stands at 66° with sunny skies and no wind. Lawn is still growing like gangbusters and, thus, so is the fatigue of the grizzled old guy who pushes the mower over it.
6/18/2013 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Wonderful day to be outside with 84.7° and sun. Overnight low of 57.3° and present temp of 58.8° seems chilly by comparison. Slight spray of rain last evening that resulted in this paltry total.
6/19/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, calm, and 59.3° after hi/lo of 71.4° and 55°. Lawn and vegetation are greener now than at any time since the beginning of last May when the rains ceased. Now if I could just convince the legions of marauding rabbits that the neighbors' yards are tastier than mine....
6/20/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Southeast wind, 66.9°, and sunny skies after gorgeous high of 77.9° and low of 59.3.
6/21/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Whoops, overslept! High of 86.5° yesterday with low of 66.9° and presently windy (from south) and sunny with reading of 77.9°.
6/22/2013 7:00 AM 0.14 M M M M Calm, 71°, and overcast following muggy day with 66.9° and 83.8° extremes.
6/23/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Fortunately, high temp never got anywhere near what was forecast yesterday with high of only78.6° and low of 65.4°. 67.6°, calm, and mostly sunny at 0745 hours on the Sabbath.
6/24/2013 7:00 AM 0.30 M M M M Light winds from west and light rain following another day on which the forecasters missed badly with temperatures and precipitation. Storm marched in nearly two hours ahead of when prognosticators had said. High of only 84.5°, low of 67.6° and present reading of 67.8°.
6/25/2013 7:00 AM 0.32 M M M M 73.4° and muggy after two storms gave us 1/3" rain and many small leaf groupings and branches down. High of 82.5°, 0700 hours (6/24) low of 65.6° and, oh yes, HAWKS WIN, HAWKS WIN, HAWKS WIN!
6/26/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Despite all the prognostications, forecasts, and dire predictions, not one drop of rain fell in the last 24 hours. With a high of but 84°, low of 67.8°, and present overcast marker of 70.7°, the people at the "Your-guess-is-as-good-as-mine" weather center have fallen far short in their warnings of a major heat wave this week.
6/27/2013 7:00 AM 0.34 M M M M Sunny, calm, and 67.2° after hi/lo of 80.6° and 64.7°. Most of yesterday's rain fell between 0915 and 1015 hours. Meteorological friends: never put much stock in forecasts that are more 36 hours before said events. This week's predicted 'heat wave' is one indication of how long-range unpredictable weather is.
6/28/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, slight west wind, and 69° after sneaky high of 91.5° and pleasant overnight low of 65.4°. Note: rainfall for 2013 in the garden spot of the southwest suburbs is closing in on total for the ENTIRE 12 months of 2012.
6/29/2013 7:00 AM 0.09 M M M M Overcast, slight wind from north, and 64.7° after 80.6° high, 62.9° low, and beautiful, peaceful rainfall near supper time. Temperature dropped 12 degrees after the brief cloudburst.
6/30/2013 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Another great day for yard work and bicycling with 74.6° high and 61.7° low. Slight spit of rain at mid-morning was our only precipitation although it's overcast now with winds from NE and 64.7°.
7/1/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M If I could have a halcyon day repeated over and over it would be yesterday with 78.8° high, 58.8° low, warm sunshine and cooling breezes. Although day, yesterday concluded a June that had a manageable 3.52" rainfall. At present, 62° with NE wind and full sun.
7/2/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yet another pleasant day with 77.7° high, 60.4°, and present 63.3° with slight north wind and cloudy skies. No rain so far this July: another drought in the works?
7/3/2013 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Sporadic light rainfall mid-morning but most of the day was dry with 69° high, 60.4° low, and present calm reading of 62.7° under cloudy skies.
7/4/2013 7:00 AM T M M M M Clearing, slight wind from south, and 60.9° after hi/lo of 71.7° and 58.6°. Forget the fireworks: cherish what happened 237 years ago on this date. We are a rare and blessed people who must continue to fight to preserve god-given the freedoms oppressive governments can and will take away.
7/6/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Fair, calm, and 69.2° after seasonal day of 82° high and 66.7° low. For the first time this growing season, the call is now going out: we need rain!
7/7/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Clear, slight SW wind, and 68.1° after yet another day of botched weather forecasts. Our predicted high of 90° ended up at 78.9° while the low was a pleasant 66.9°.
7/8/2013 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Raining lightly with wind from west and 74.8° after hi/lo of 86° and 68.1°.
7/9/2013 7:00 AM 0.26 M M M M Slight SW winds and 75.3° after high of 85.1°, low of 69.9°, and two bands of morning rains which brought a welcome 0.26" rain. Drove to Geneva only to see Class A minor league flooded out by sheets and sheets of heavy rain. Will be interesting to see their rain totals.
7/10/2013 7:00 AM 0.05 M M M M 77°, extremely humid (90%), and slight wind from north after high of but 83.6° and low of 73°. In both of the last two days I've been nearby (mile or two away) and gotten drenched from frog-strangling downpours only to arrive home and find little water in the gauge.
7/11/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M For mid-July a pleasant 24 hours with lessening humidity, 85.6° high, fair skies, slight north wind, low of 60.4°, and present mark of of 65.1°. Garden spot of the Southwest suburbs, however, has only had 1/3" of rain this month.
7/12/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Highly tolerable last 24 hours with 83.6° high, 55° low and present, calm, and sunny mark of 62°. We do, however, need rain. Today will be the first day of 2013 we haul out the sprinkler to head off damage to a repaired portion of the front yard that was badly torched a year ago.
7/13/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Typical mid-July day with high of 87.2°, low of 61.8°, and present 64.5° under sunny, peaceful skies. Still, we need rain.
7/14/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Light east winds, 71.7°, and sunny after unexpected high of 89° and seasonal low of 64.5°. The last two weeks represent the slowest period of lawn growth since meteorological spring began. Has been five days since I cut and there is little need to do it today.
7/15/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, calm, and already 78.2° after high of 94.1°. Overnight low was 71.7° but it took no time before the mercury bounced back up toward 80°. Our sprinklers are on again today and we need rain.
7/16/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Rewind the tape and play it once more: no rain, sunny with light southerly winds after high of 92.3°, warm overnight low of 72.8°, and a reading of 75° headed for near 90°. Sigh.
7/17/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Once more with feeling: sunny, calm, humid, and 74.8° after extremes of 95° and 72.1°. In first 16 days of July only 0.33" rain has fallen. Believe it or not, we had more last July in that wretched drought than we've had this month.
7/18/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Fourth consecutive day of temps over 92° with a 96.6° reading and the fifth of 2013. Clear and calm after overnight low of 74.8° and is presently 78.8°. Still but 0.33" rain this month.
7/19/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M High of 94.2° (fifth straight day in 90's), low of 74.8°, and present reading of 80.6° with west winds. Drove through fierce storm on I-355 near Lemont at 5:15 p.m. yesterday. Arrived to find that nary a drop fell here.
7/20/2013 7:00 AM 0.05 M M M M Paltry 0.05" rain gives the garden spot of the Southwest Suburbs only 0.38" for July and but 1.19" since early June. Scorching high of 96.9° (sixth straight day of 90°+ readings) continued the damage to yard and crops and low of 70.3° still has many folks using the AC. 71.7° at 0730 hours with clear skies and wind has switched around to the north.
7/21/2013 7:00 AM T M M M M Weather jockeys were way off yesterday as we reached sweltering high of 94.1° and had but a trace of rain. Overnight low was a pleasant 68.3° and present reading is 71.7° under clear, calm skies. I see that rain is forecast for later today and tomorrow. Pshaw! The Meteorological Curtain that exists along I-80 will stop it before it can reach this town. We rest at 0.38" for July and 1.79" since early June.
7/22/2013 7:00 AM T M M M M The Precipitation Curtain again descended on New Lenox as two separate storms missed us and left but a trace of the precipitation we badly, badly need. High of 85.4° (first sub-90° day in a week), overnight low of 68°, and present pleasant reading of 69.2° under clearing skies and slight southeast wind.
7/23/2013 7:00 AM 0.16 M M M M An overnight 'gusher' gave us 0.16" rain. Even so, we're barely at 1/2" for July after 88.3° high, 63.6° low, and current reading of 65.4° under clearing skies and slight west wind.
7/24/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Gorgeous morning for late July with clear and peaceful skies, 56.8° temperature and following decent day of 80.7°/54.6° extremes. Still, we badly need rain with only 0.54" having fallen this month and under 2" since early June.
7/25/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Wow, with a little rain added in, I could live in this weather 330 days a year: 77.7° high, overnight low of 52.8°, sunny, calm, and current reading of 58.8°.
7/26/2013 7:00 AM T M M M M Overcast, calm, and 63.3° after hi/lo of 80.4° and 57°. Garden spot of the southwest suburbs needs more H2O than an every-other-day sprinkling can give it.
7/27/2013 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Autumnal, overcast day with northerly winds day brought us a trickle of rain, high of 73°, low of 57°, and present temperature of but 59.7°. With only five days left in July we're a cinch to total far less than 1" of rain.
7/28/2013 7:00 AM 0.04 M M M M A gully-washer of cold (53°) rain devastated the area with 0.04" this morning. Gales of 5-10 MPH from the west created, well, far less than what is really needed to get out of this July drought. High yesterday of 65.8° but no complaints while an overnight low of 50.3° gave us what Roger Triemstra would call "good sleeping weather".
7/29/2013 7:00 AM 0.06 M M M M Showers yesterday continued briefly past reporting time and then left us to have a 69° high, 51° overnight low , and presently a 54.8° reading under sunny peaceful skies.
7/30/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Still, overcast, and 62.7° following pleasant day with 78.8°/54.6° extremes. We barrel into the last 41 hours of July with but 0.65" rain. Remember the drought last year? In 2012 we had 2.86" in July.
7/31/2013 7:00 AM 0.02 M M M M Another 'deluge' yesterday and early this morning leaves us with 0.65" rain in all but the final 17 hours of July and only 2.08" since the second week of June. Temperature varied less than seven degrees since 0700 hours yesterday with 69° high, 62.7° low, and present 65.1°.
8/1/2013 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Don't cry for me Argentina but the recent rain figures here in the garden spot of the southwest suburbs must be the worst in Illinois. July ended with but 0.70": almost two inches LESS than in the terrible drought of last year! Furthermore, since June 15, a total of only 2.11" has fallen. Yesterday's high 74.6°, overnight low of 58.6° and current reading is a pleasant and sunny 63.3°.
8/2/2013 7:00 AM 0.58 M M M M Raining and 61.8° after hi/lo of 81.6° and 60.8°. In one gentle overnight rain we've nearly equaled our total for the last month.
8/3/2013 7:00 AM 0.22 M M M M In 14 hours, several gentle rainfalls exceeded our total for all of July. Yes, the garden spot of the SW suburbs is starting to get back to its deep green and colorful look. High of 80.9° yesterday, overnight low of 61.7°, and present reading of 63.6° under sunny, calm skies.
8/4/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Calm, sunny, and 62.7° after pleasant but rainless Saturday featuring high of 80.6° and low of 56.6°. Despite having already exceeded July's paltry precipitation total we still need more.
8/5/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Some thin clouds, wind from south, and 60.8° following pleasant Sabbath with 78.6° high and 58.8° low.
8/6/2013 7:00 AM 0.03 M M M M Threatening skies, wind from south, and 65.1° after 71.7°/60.8° extremes. After I mowed the lawn yesterday, my wife commented that it hasn't looked this good since May, 2012. That's the product of mega yard work, much watering, and minimal help from Mother Nature.
8/7/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M A seeming repeat of the pattern we've had since mid-June as forecast rain slipped around us leaving only clouds, southwest breeze, and 70.7° after high of 80.9° and low of 65.1°.
8/8/2013 7:00 AM 0.12 M M M M Overcast, wind from east, and 68° after humid high of 84.5° and low of 66°. 1/8" inch of rain in mid-afternoon was just what the botanist ordered.
8/9/2013 7:00 AM T M M M M Calm, sunny, and 61.3°. Yesterday featured a brief spit of mid-afternoon rain during our high temperature of 78.2° and long before the overnight low of 57.5°.
8/10/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Pleasant day with few clouds, refreshing winds, and hi/lo of 82.2° and 61.3°. Trend continues this morning with 66.9° at 0730 hours. Don't look now but we've had but 1.6" rain since the fourth week of June.
8/11/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, still, and 63.5° after high of 83.6° and low of 59°. Rain needed.
8/12/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M High of 78.8°, overnight low of 63.6°, and present temperature of 67.1° would make for beautiful mid-August weather if we didn't need rain so badly.
8/13/2013 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M One stinking hundredth of an inch of rain out of all those forecasts and dark clouds. After a high of 82.2°, low of 60.9°, and present reading of 62° it's yet another occasion to hitch up the sprinkler for the front lawn.
8/14/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M How 'bout these figures for mid-August: high of but 74.6°, present reading of 52.8°, and overnight low of 49.8° with nippy north winds.
8/15/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another beautiful autumn day with little wind, plenty of sunshine, and a temperature of 59.3° after 78.8° and 52.1°.
8/16/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Some clouds, no wind, and 60.4° after another rainless day of 74.8°/56.6°. No rain this week, 0.96" for first half of August, 1.66" since July 1st, and but 3" since mid-June.
8/17/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Slight east wind and sunny with 66°(0830 hours) on the thermometer after 87.9° and 56.6° extremes yesterday. And the usual: no rain.
8/18/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Again no rain. Bad as conditions were in 2012, we're far, far behind that wretched year since mid-June: 5.21" rain then but just 1.99" this time around. Yesterday's high was 80°, overnight low of 58°, and present mark of 64°.
8/19/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain again. High of 84.5°, low of 59°, and present weather is calm, sunny, and 61.8°. Sprinkler is running in front yard. Hello, water bill!
8/20/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, calm, and 66.7° after another warm day with high of 88.3°, low of 61.7° and NO RAIN. Ground is hard as bricks and trees/shrubs need daily watering to keep them from wilting.
8/21/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain. Calm, 66.2°, and sunny after rainless day of 90.6°/64.4°. Tom Skilling's 8/20 weather page greatly UNDERestimated the depths of the drought we've faced in the last seven weeks. Hey Tom, have a look at our CoCoRaHS stats once in a while!
8/22/2013 7:00 AM 0.55 M M M M Glory be, over half an inch of badly, badly needed rain since late last night. Presently raining and 68.7° after hi/lo of 93.3° and 66.2°.
8/23/2013 7:00 AM 0.56 M M M M Back-to-back days with 0.56" rain have instantly returned the yard to its pool table green appearance. 64.4°, sunny, and clear this AM after narrow hi/lo of 71.4° and 60.8° yesterday.
8/24/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, winds from SE, and 64.2° after warm Friday with 89.2° and 60° extremes.
8/25/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Routine late August day with sun, gentle breezes, 85.4° high, 62.2° low, and present, sunny 65.6°. No rain.
8/26/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another pleasant late meteorological summer day with 86.7°high and 64.4° low. 65.4° at present with slight SW winds and clear skies.
8/27/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M High of only 88.7° (low of 65.4°)as the Chicago weather wizards were wrong for the third straight day. Overcast, 73.2°, sultry and calm as August comes down to its last few days. If the 90° forecast is correct today, it'd would give them a batting average of .250 and make them the stars of the Chicago Cub batting order.
8/28/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The "Look At Me" Chicago television weather people were off again by 3-5 degrees as our high reached but 92.3°. Overnight low was 73.2° and present mark of 74.6° is accompanied by slight west wind and overcast canopy.
8/29/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M We flounce into the final 65 hours of August (and meteorological summer) with but 2.10" rain after an even worse mark of 0.70" in July. Normal for these two months would be a total of 8". Dry yesterday with high of 86.7°, low of 70.2° and present cloudy reading of 71.2°.
8/30/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another rainless day with 90.3° high and current low of 67.6°. With 41 hours left in August we rest at 2" of rain and worse yet have only had 2.66" since mid-June.
8/31/2013 7:00 AM 0.42 M M M M Gloomy, 69°, and light breeze from east after 94.4° high and 66.9° low. Stiff winds early last evening took down several small tree limbs but no damage occurred with the much-needed 0.42" rain.
9/1/2013 7:00 AM 0.09 M M M M Even with yesterday's pleasant shower that brought 0.09" rain, meteorological summer was drier than in the 2012 drought. A year ago, the 8.58" rain we had seemed scanty but this year only 7.69" fell (June 3.52", July 0.66", August 3.51"). Normal is 12"! High of 78° yesterday, overnight low of 64° and present mark of 64.2°.
9/2/2013 7:00 AM 1.10 M M M M The "September switch" has apparently been flipped and the heavens opened up to the tune of 1.10" rain in a short span near bedtime. High of 82.9° yesterday, low of 61.3° and present sunny, calm reading of 62.2°.
9/3/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Beautiful day for attending final regular season game of Kane County Cougars as high reached 79.1° (low was but 54.6°) and mixed clouds kept direct sunlight off us for much of the day. Presently 57° with gentle NW winds.
9/4/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another gorgeous morning in the garden spot of the SW suburbs with sun, little wind, and 54.5° after hi/lo of 75.3° and 54.1°.
9/5/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Murky, still, and 68.3° (0800 hours) after wonderful day with 81.1° high and 54.8° low.
9/6/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Yet another pleasant day with 78.2° high, 60.2° low and present partly cloudy temperature of 81.5°. Alas and alac: no rain.
9/7/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The September story seems to be following that of August, July, and June: one healthy rain recorded at the start of the month and then a string of zeroes. Dry again yesterday with high of 83.1°, low of 81.5° and present clearing temperature of 64.2°.
9/8/2013 7:00 AM T M M M M Screwy little rain wetted my hair and glasses at 0945 hours but that was all as high reached 86.9°, low bottomed at 64.2° and present temp is 70.8° with heavy cloud cover and strong east winds. Our yard is fast drying up again.
9/9/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Misty and 65.8° with slight south wind after hi/lo of 83.3°/65.6°. As almost always, no rain.
9/10/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain again as we're 1/3 of the way through a third consecutive bone-dry month. High of 93.3°, low of 66°, and present reading of 72.5° with mild SW winds.
9/11/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Hazy skies, 72.5°, and SW wind after unseasonal high of 94.6° and low of 70.7°. The skein of no rain continues.
9/12/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain again. Historical precipitation norm for the past 90 days is 11.15". New Lenox has had but 5.72". We're now 10 days in a row without a drop. High of 92.5° yesterday and low of 66.3° which is just .2° of present temerature.
9/13/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Friday the 13th but we'll have no change of luck with rain as the sky is sunny and a brisk wind from the north prevails. High of 80° yesterday, overnight low of but 50.5° and present is 53.9°.
9/14/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M No rain (again) but plenty of stiff northerly winds on my daily bike ride. Haven't been that chilled for quite a while. High of but 67.2°, present reading of 50.1°, and overnight brrrrr low of 45.1°.
9/15/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Heavily overcast and 53.2° after hi/lo of 70.3° and 51.2°. In normal times I'd say it was going to pour but these last three months: let's just roll the dice or draw straws.
9/16/2013 7:00 AM 0.25 M M M M Pleasant almost picturesque 1/4" of rain but accompanied by chilly temperatures (high of only 65.1°, low of 53.2°, and present 56.3°) but we'll take rain the few times we've gotten it since mid-June. Normal for that 90-day span is nearly 12" whereas we've not had half the amount.
9/17/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sanguine day with 67.2° high and minimal winds but more rain is still needed. Overnight low of 49.2° and present reading of 50.5° still significantly below normal for mid-September.
9/18/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M The only predicted shower this area actually got was the one I took 30 minutes ago. It's overcast outside, winds from south, 60.4°, and that follows a pleasant day with 72.3°/50° hi/lo.
9/19/2013 7:00 AM 0.31 M M M M Peaceful rain between 1604 hours and 1715 that followed high of 81.1° and plenty of warm winds. Overnight low of 60.4° and present overcast reading of 67.4°.
9/20/2013 7:00 AM 0.25 M M M M Golly gee, a streak of rainy weather. We're not used to this in the newly emerging desert otherwise known as New Lenox. Very unseasonal high of 89.6° gave way to showers and overnight low of 65.3°. Mercury has moved up just 0.5° since then and skies are still overcast.
9/21/2013 7:00 AM 0.01 M M M M Trace of rain near 1000 hours preceding high temp of 74.4° and overnight low of 60°. It's now 51.4° with clear skies and sharp NW wind.
9/22/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M 53°, sunny, and calm after nippy night with 44.7° low following 68° high. Well, it IS late September, right?
9/23/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Calm, clear, and 47.8° after high of 68° (second day in row) and low of 46°. Lawn has become green again but we're still woefully behind a normal amount of rainfall for last 3 1/2 months.
9/24/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Site is causing problems. This is my fifth try at locking today's info into CoCoRaHS. High for 9/23 was 71.2°, low was 47.8°, and present sunny reading is 50.1°.
9/25/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another pleasant early autumn day with high of 73.9°, low of 50°, and present sunny reading of 50.9°. BUT, we still need rain.
9/26/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M High of 72.1°, low of 50°, and present sunny temperature of 51.4°. We NEED rain.
9/27/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M High of 78°, low of 51.2° and present, sunny temperature of 56.6°. Lawn is rapidly drying to a pale green, crunchy state. Four days left in September and we barely have half the normal rainfall for the month.
9/28/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Sunny, slight southerly breeze, and 55° after another uneventful day with 82.2° high and 54.6° low. Of late we've had some slight settling issues due to extreme paucity of rain. Nearly four months without any sustained rainfall doesn't help a foundation and its structure.
9/29/2013 7:00 AM 0.30 M M M M Pleasant overnight shower of nearly 1/3" still leaves us far short of a typical September's rainfall (this year's 2.31" versus 3.33") with but 41 hours left in the month. Yesterday's high was 84.2°, low of 51.4° and present sunny mark is 51.6°.
9/30/2013 7:00 AM 0.00 0.0 M M M Another sunny and pleasant autumn day with 45.3° low, 67.1° high and present 50.9°. Just 6.63" rain in the last 100 days.
