Steady falling snow from the middle of the afternoon through the evening until after 11 pm provided 6.2" of snow on the snow board and about 8-9" in my driveway. I am not quite sure since I shoveled multiple times. There are a variety of readings from 6" to 11" throughout the yard and the 0.95" to 0.65" melted precipitation between what fell in the gauge compared to the snow board core because of blowing and drifting. I decided to report the 6.2" on the board even though that may be on the light side. The snow is heavy and wet.

An unusual observation this morning was that there was more than twice as much snow on the white snow board as there was on the rest of my snow field. The only explanation that seems plausible is that since the temperatures were slightly above freezing at the time of the flurry, some snow melted in the dark snow field but did not melt on the white snow board - interesting phenomenon.

There were a couple of snow flakes in the air yesterday, but there is nothing in the gauge or on the snow board at this time. Gray cumulus clouds are blowing in from the north off of Lake Michigan over our county resulting in lake-effect sprinkles. We had very light sprinkles yesterday afternoon. It looked as if the rain was going to skirt Valparaiso once again in the afternoon yesterday as thunderstorms went north and south. However, in a truly impressive 90-minute storm which started at 8:40 pm, we received more rain than we have totaled in more than a month. The ground was so dry that this rain did not create minor flooding in my back yard which is known to produce a mini-pond with 2" rainfalls.

2/23/2013 3/04/2013 9:30 AM 10 1.20 2.5 M In the days that we were gone, there were minor amounts of snow on many days, sleet on other days, and rain on some days according to reports of neighbors. The result is a hard packed 2.5" of snow and ice from which it was impossible to get an accurate core precipitation measurement. If you need to put a value on the amount of moisture in the 2.5" in the snow and ice covering the snow field, just use the phrase "there is a bunch" of moisture in this snow pack. It may not be very scientific, but it is as close as I can come.
