12/20/2012 7:00 AM 0.80 2.5 0.37 2.5 0.37 What a storm! This was a difficult snowstorm to measure. Several factors impact the measurements. First of all, the wind created drifts all over the place. My snow board is in the most open area of my backyard and definitely was not in a drift. But some snow may have been blown off of the board. On the other hand, my gauge is closer to the house and may have been impacted by wind currents around the house, resulting in an overestimate. Second, the ground was warm. My driveway was pretty much all ice thanks to the snow melting upon impact, then freezing again. There was also ice on the snowboard that did not get captured by my core sample. These effects are certainly represented by the disparity between what I captured in my gauge and the core sample. Regardless, it's nice to get another round of moisture on the heels of last week's nice rainfall.

Overnight, another 2.5" fell for a total of 5.5". Light snow falling at observation time. My snow board is in the middle of my backyard and out of the drift zones. However, the east wind puts my snow gauge on the edge of the drifts caused by my house, so I think the melted precip amount is an over-estimate.
2/22/2013 7:00 AM 0.72 3.5 0.52 7.5 1.11 After a full day of steady, light snow, plus about an hour of moderate snow beginning at 1:00 p.m., the snowfall finally shut down about 6:30 p.m. We received another 3.5" for a total of 7.5". Regarding melted precip and core measurements. For the whole storm, which began at 8:00 a.m. on 2/20/2013, I had 1.99" of melted precip in my snow gauge. My gauge is located within ~15' of the west side of the house. With the east wind, the snow gauge was on the edge of the drift zone, so this may be an overestimate. My snowboards are in the middle of the backyard, away from any drift zones. The total of the two core samples of new snow totaled 1.23, which matches up favorably with my core sample of total snow of 1.11". So I feel confident that we had more than an inch of moisture, for which we are thankful.
