Winds started last evening, but took several hours "off" overnight, to begin in earnest at 6:30am. Primarily from the NE, but swinging wildly from E to NW too. With NE or E storms we usually get a boost in rainfall amounts due to orographic lift; you wouldn't think 1,100 is enough elevation!

By bedtime the snow had a thick glaze of ice on top. By this morning it was also VERY heavy, so overnight must have been a lot more rain. After TOR in the time it took to melt the snowboard core sample & gauge contents, it changed back over to snow.

Very little melting, and the snowpack has frozen rock hard, so that it mostly supported my weight walking on top getting to the gauge this morning. Even with a metal ruler it was hard to "punch through" to get a reading of depth, so the 6" reported is only from 2 sample spots. Also, the 0.08 SWE from the board did not include a layer of ice at the very bottom that couldn't be picked up in the core sample.

1/29/2013 8:00 AM 0.28 0.5 M 1.0 0.42 Overcast, 34.4° 24hr: 26.5/35.8° It never even got to 32° yesterday; high temps occurred as temps rose over night. The proverbial "winter mix" left 0.5" of compressed snow/ice on the snowboard and just 0.4" thick glaze of ice on steps, patio, and all untreated surfaces. We have 1/2" rubber mats on the kitchen steps and this morning they are completely entombed in ice. After seeing the MOD, I put on my Yak-Tracs and tried my best to measure representative "snow on ground." Actual snow depth is 1.2" with SWE of 0.42 (after subtracting out 0.01" to account for the pieces of grass, pine needles, and mulched leaves also chipped out of the ice sample. Thanks again to NJ-HN-8 for the tip on using a 1 lb coffee can instead of the gauge for pounding through hard stuff!

The town still hasn't gotten here to plow our roads so they must be still working on the larger roads.

Gauge contents had melted and frozen overnight into a disk of ice at the bottom of the gauge. The snow ended here early afternoon but I didn't have a chance to measure the added snowfall before leaving at 3pm; it looked like 2", but compressed overnight to the reported 1.3" on the board. Snow storm total: 8.8" and season to date: 45.30"

Heard rain at approx 4am. I did not measure the maximum snow depth before the changeover, but by the thick crust of ice on top of the 4.5" on the snowboard this morning, I'm estimating it was about 5" before compressing with the sleet and rain.

Then it changed over to moderate to heavy snow briefly, measuring 0.2" when it ended. Late afternoon the sun came out and melted all of the new snow/ice, leaving a clear disk of ice in the bottom of the gauge this morning. The thin layer of ice still on the snowboard wouldn't budge, even trying a paint scraper, so I'm reporting N/A. Snow pack is average of samples ranging from 3" - 4".

Saw a small flock of red-winged blackbirds yesterday, the bird I'm told is the real sign of Spring, not the robin. But I'm still on the lookout for the first robin here, after seeking an entire flock on a lawn in Manalapan on Monday.

A few flakes on several occasions left a very slight dusting of snow on the snowboard and exactly one drop (after melting) in the gauge. Snow cover samples range from 1" -2" on about 70% of the ground, but the snow is definitely retreating. Better get the pond cleaned out before the toads and frogs arrive!

But there are still serious piles where it had been shoveled; the entire back of the house (north) has piles 18-20" deep where the snow slid off the new metal roof.
